Joi Martin was afraid to really love someone, because she thought they would die. She figured if she married well, the money would be enough. That was until she met Joe Pride. Joe showed her what life could be like with a someone who loved her wholeheartedly. Joi's mother didn't think Pride was good enough for her daughter. She always made Joi think that marrying well would be better for her. OH, how wrong she was. You need to read this book to get the full effect. I guarantee, you won't put it down.

I was also left with the yearning to correspond with another in such a way, as did the characters Delphine and Jean-Luc.
For a book lover like me this was the book i was looking for without knowing it.I read it within a day. I couldnt fail to take this book anywhere without a pen, purely so that i could underline phrases, sentences, and paragraphs that i loved throughout this book to re-read whenever i wish to be uplifted.
I thoroughly loved reading this book, especially due to its surprise, and unfortunate ending.
I would recommend it to anyone who wishes, or a few hours, to dissapear into a world that involves just you the reader, the characters and their wonderful journey.

Anyway, I ended up joining a book club so I could buy books from each of these published authors. Thank you for all the hook-ups and the people to avoid. And Travis Hunter's story was the best of all, but I'm not surprised because I'm crazy about this author's work.

Truths to Live ByReview Date: 2003-07-09
This unique anthology contains stories from well known authors such as Travis Hunter, Omar Tyree, Margaret Johnson-Hodge, Pearl Cleage, and others, as well as stories from up and coming authors. Like the proverbs they represent, the stories are diverse and full of emotions. Although all of the stories were wonderful and touching, some of personal favorites were Gwynne Forster's "First Thing Monday Morning," which taught the morals that actions speak louder than words and to be careful what you wish for, because you just may get it, and Robert Fleming's "A Crisis of Faith," about a man who is wrongly incarcerated.
PROVERBS FOR THE PEOPLE is a wonderful novel that will teach, inspire, and entertain. It has a story that everyone can relate to, and will make a wonderful addition to any book collection.

Even if you know the story of Hosea, this book will give you a more in depth view of what Hosea went through and what God goes through continually with His children.
I love Christian fiction and tend to devour several books in a week. This book stands out because not only was it an entertaining read, it caused me to reflect and pray and strive to be a better Christian.
Absolutely wonderful!

God is good and Vanessa shows it in her books. If you haven't read the rest of the "Rain" series books, you need to.
Vanessa's stories have me feeling God's love and has me wanting to share it with the world.
Thank you Vanessa for another dynamic book.

RAIN STORM is Christian fiction at its best. Vanessa Miller has done a wonderful job creating a story to be enjoyed by all readers. Cynda and Keith both have endured a lot of pain and strife in their lives, and only by the grace of God will they find the strength to carry on. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and look forward to collecting the other books in this series.

Classic American, cynical detective stories.Review Date: 2005-05-11
Detective stories aren't as common as they once were, but if you look at the offspring of the Pulp magazine once so popular, television, they are still as popular as ever. Chandler was one author who defined what a detective story was. This book contains four novels:The Lady in the Lake, The Little Sister, The Long Goodbye, and Playback. These are wonderfully entertaining stories that contain the archetypical hard-bitten detective, Philip Marlowe. After reading these stories you will forever see Marlowe in every detective story you see or read, from Magnum to the latest TV cop. How can you not love an author who sums up Modern American Capitalism with lines like these? "We make the finest packages in the world, Mr. Marlowe. The stuff inside is mostly junk." Or an author who in the early 50's, (50 years before the current 'Queers Dress Up' shows) so presciently wrote, "The queer is the artistic arbiter of our age, chum." Or his comment on a speech by a politician, "He did not bore us with any facts."
These books are not just riveting, fun reading, but full of thoughtful quotes like the above.
Chandler also is must-reading for his understanding of criminality, venality, human nature, Southern California, Movies, American culture and American relationship dynamics. I hate to use the word "classic" to describe stories that are just so plain fun to read, but I find it hard not to.
This volume also contains a screenplay, Double Indemnity, and a few essays and letters. The essays "The Simple Art of Murder", and "Writers in Hollywood" should be required reading for anyone interested in 20th century culture, movies, and literature. Just a few tidbits more. Chandler on English Mystery Writers - "The English may not always be the best writers in the world, but they are incomparably the best dull writers." Chandler on boredom - "There are no dull subjects, only dull minds." Chandler on critics - "The average critic never recognizes an achievement when it happens. He explains it after it has become respectable."
My only criticism is that the plots are contrived and sometimes complicated. But such criticism is like complaining that the Mona Lisa would be a fine painting if only it were of a different size.
Chandler is simply wonderful, funny, cynical, and yes, - respectable.
Outstanding in so many waysReview Date: 2007-02-24
I won't try to list all the ways these novels are great and entertaining, but here's one thought that hasn't been mentioned in other reviews. Chandler is excellent at presenting a hero-character who has to worry about money and making a living. Indeed, Chandler makes this issue integral to the character's persona and to the plot line. Yes, the books are escapist in so many ways. Yet, in this respect at least, they are far more realistic than almost all of the fiction, and much of the non-fiction, these days.
The best of Raymond ChandlerReview Date: 2005-12-05
Chandler lived a tough, hard-drinking life, and these later works came out of his mind with difficulty. But the quality of The Lady in the Lake and The Long Goodbye (The Little Sister is less memorable) make this collection essential.
In addition, the book contains some essays and letters, including Chandler's writing on the mystery genre, which will interest any budding suspense author.
In short, read this book! Read The Long Goodbye, then read it again. This is not just a great mystery, but it is also great literature.

Far out!Review Date: 2008-04-05
"Razor Fight." That's exactly what the story is about. The dialogue is thrillingly terse.
"You're Too Hip, Baby." When even the alienated find you too alienating.
"Twirlin' at Ole Miss." One of the most famous examples of Gonzo journalism. Hardcore New Yorker (actually, Southern was a Texan) heads south to research the subculture of baton twirling and finds, hilariously, that stereotypes of "The South" are all true!
"Blood of a Wig." One of the most notorious American short stories ever written. Back in the day, a college acquaintance told me what this story was about. I didn't believe him. Turns out he was right. Title refers to a very clandestine type of drug abuse -- injecting yourself with the blood of a schizophrenic. And that's just the beginning.

Southern's BestReview Date: 2005-08-14
"You're Too Hip, Baby" is more on race and a deflation of the concept of "hip" by one of its masters.
Although best known for his outrageousness, many of these stories display the sensitivity that was at the core of Southern's greatness.

Anyways I found it and started to read it, and I must say it is the best fairy tale book I own. It's much more lush and interesting than Grimms, though Grimm is great, this book is so far my favorite.
Quite possibly the best fairy tale book ever written.
EnchantingReview Date: 2007-12-21
Was I ever surprised! The Twelve Dancing Princesses was related in a manner I had never read before, the end result being a much more engaging storyline. The hero and his bride were given names, personalities, and a depth that is missing from practically every other fairy tale collection I own. The result is a story that is short enough to be read to a child at bedtime, but lush, engaging, and interesting enough to grip even the most jaded folktale enthusiast. Just a small list of the differences in the Twelve Dancing Princesses story from the "traditional" versions I already owned:
1. The hero seeking the elusive answer is not an old, jaded soldier, but a young, thoughtful peasant boy.
2. The princes who fail to find the answer do not have their heads cut off by the murderous king (a plot device which made no sense, because it discouraged questors who might gain the answer, not to mention that the kingly fathers would likely object to this treatment of their sons), but rather "disappear" completely - a development that is carefully explained in the story.
3. The princesses come to accept the loss of their nightly amusements and relish a chance to grow up, put away childish things, and become queens.
4. The princess who marries the questor marries him out of love and acceptance, and the marriage is a joyous one, not a form of humiliation and punishment of the 'proud' princess.
Each of the stories is this way - old, familiar, completely recognizable, and yet totally new and compelling. I cannot recommend this collection highly enough, and once I finish the Red book, I will happily move to the next colors in the rainbow.
Great fairy book for all agesReview Date: 2007-01-04
Andrew Lang's books were the first books that Tolkien ever read, he owned The Red Fairy Book and even after long time he remembered it fondly.
If you are searching for Tolkien in this book you will not be disappointed. You will find there the source for the name of Pippin for instance, you will find in the stories grains of ideas and themes that later found themselves in LOTR.
But you will find there more than just LOTR references. You will find great stories, some of them a little naive for the cynical reader, but all of them interesting. Even if you are adult, this book will conquer you completely. This is a book for all the members of the family. You will love it and your children will love it. Some of the stories are suitable for very small children to read to them before bedtime.
If you are searching for so called "sophisticated" books, this book is not for you. It contained simple stories, some of them with moral and it is lacking complex motives and emotions, after all, it is fairy tales.
I loved this book.Review Date: 2004-02-18
