If you're looking for an intelligent and practical guide to facilitating bibliotherapy - with individuals, couples or groups . . . with adult populations or young people, there is no better blueprint for success than this. Mental health professionals, teachers, librarians and parents interested in the therapeutic application of literature will find Arleen Hynes' advice indispensable. As a practicing bibliotherapist, I have read virtually every book written on the subject and this is the only book I wouldn't live without.

My 1 year old's favorite book!

My son has tons of board books but hands down, Billy Bunny is his favorite! The pictures of the animals are so big and it is like their eyes are looking right at him. He especially loves the pages with Morris Mouse and Freddy Fox on them. He loves to scratch their noses b/c of the textures that are included in this book. This is a must have! Highly recommend!

Some of the best board books ever!

We purchased Maurice Pledger board books (Oscar Otter, Olive Owl and Billy Bunny) for our child at 6 months and at 2 years old they are still favorites. Here are just some of what we love about them. The illustrations are spectacular. They accurately represent the wildlife being depicted. There is a great variety of textures to appeal to a child's desire to touch and feel. Our child's favorite page is the "sticky" plant in Olivia Owl. They encourage interaction with questions like "How many shiny beetles has he found on the rose bush?" (from Billy Bunny) and requests like "Tickle her orange tummy." (from Oscar Otter). They are oversized for board books (approx. 9x11 inches), which our child loves. They give children nice big pictures to look at.

television is fantasy

Children learn that television is not real. The Bionic Bunny Show book goes behind the scenes of a popular super hero show. Mr. Brown shows the reader the truth.

Also, the reader learns the vocabulary used by the workers on the set. There is a glossary in the back of the book. A good way to expand the reader's voabulary.

behind-the-scenes of a television show

The creator of Arthur gives us this behind -the-scenes look at Arthur and Buster's favorite television series, The Bionic Bunny Show, as we see the actor arrive at the studio, get dressed, perform stunts and go home for the evening. The book's pages look rather like a television when we see how the episode appears to viewers. This humorous book, featured on Reading Rainbow, would be great for Arthur fans or for when you want to discuss the unreality of tv shows.

Once again, Debra Frasier has combined a vibrant portrayal of a child's sense of magical possibility with useful and insightful lessons about our amazing world. Like On the Day You Were Born, this book reminds young readers that their lives are part of the grand and important movements of the universe. And like Miss Alaineus, this book teaches us all that fun and insight are often a matter of how you see things. Hats off to Debra Frasier for another wonderful book.

A Birthday Cake Is No Ordinary Cake is a cake recipe, science lesson, appealing children's book, and perfect birthday gift all rolled into one. I really enjoyed it. Debra Frasier's colorful illustrations seem to jump right off the page. The book unfolds as an interactive cake recipe listing all the things that you will need to collect in one year to make a birthday cake, including the first sunrise after your birthday and continuing through an entire year of natural phenomenon. Children learn about the seasons and about the earth's rotation around the sun while celebrating all the fun of birthdays and cakes. Kids love this book, and best of all it's perfect for bringing to birthday parties.

My baby boy just loves this book. It is his favorite. He insists on reading it 3-4 times each sitting. Colorful pictures and a nice story keeps his attention. We both highly recommend it.

An excellent fun interactive board book for preschoolers.

I was really impressed to find this book in the store when I was looking for a birthday gift. It is a colorful charming book that captures little kids attention with a waggy tail for the child to wag as the story goes along. I highly recommend it.

Both of my kids love this book. My daughter at 4 1/2 still loves it. It's been a staple baby shower gift for us and so far we've gotten nothing but huge "thank you's" for giving it. It's truely a book that the child loves and the parent loves reading.

I thought this book would be a little much for my 11 month old but he was completely enthralled. The attached pieces were so interesting to him and he loved sticking the pieces on the velcro. The story made him laugh and smile. Would love more books like this one.

A whimsical interactive story with hidden elements and magical transformations about a robot, a little girl, the nature of friendship and readers falling in love with their books.
Narrated by Laurie Anderson because she saw the story and fell in love with it in Japan, where it was a best-selling book and CDROM. Original score by a talented and unusual composer.
Only on a computer could you experience this! See Organa.com for more details about it.

John Lithgow is a genius! I purchased this book along with his other children books and activity items, as well as his CDs. I love them all - great songs, educational for children to learn about instruments, love and lots and lots of fun to dance to!! I highly recommend his books and stuff.

Rainy day fun

Lithgow has done it again with another great book to keep you kids both entertained and creative. His rainy day tips range from origami folding to mud painting to "po-art-ry," and there are so many that even the most obstinately bored child will find something to stimulate her mind. The book comes with a kit that contains all the hard-to-find items required for the projects, so parents won't have to drive around and hunt them down. I would recommend this to any parent with kids who love to have fun.

Like visiting a world class Museum exhibit on the brain.
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-09
When I picked up this book I was floored as to the detail and the depth with which this book covers the subject. I felt like I had just entered the exhibit room of a world class museum. The book takes you on a tour of the brain the way a museum exhibit would. It has all the best features, including: being interactive; covering the history and developement of the field; and being up to date and accurate. The book is as much fun for the brain expert as well as the brain neophyte. It may be too detailed for children under 12 but with an adult helping I think children down to 7 or 8 can get alot out of this volume.

Great tool for psychology students

Brainpack, while not incredibly detailed, is a wonderful introduction to the structure and function of the brain and an enhancer of text material. Provides a great overview, is accurate, visually appealing and offers lots of fun with the activities. Students love it.
