This book was used in my Exercise Phys course last year, and I must say that it is very thorough and presented in an easy-to-understand format. The text has many illustrations and graphs to show you the dynamics of each concept. I had no Exercise Physiology background prior to this class, and this book made all the difference in being successful with the new material. I have, on numerous occasion, referred back to this text for information after completing the class. I highly recommend purchasing this book at least as a reference go-to for any Exercise Science enthusiast.

Failure & Progress

People are naive about the benefits of failure. Wrongly founded assumptions about failure replace potentially accurate assessments of what is necessary to achieve success. Failure, which spends much of its life in the gulag of public perception, is, by all measures, essential to success. It is failure's peculiar fate that its reputation is routinely reinforced by negative perceptions.

Gary Ryan Blair explained to me that failure does have an ulterior motive... not to get you to quit, but to stop you long enough so that you may learn something, re-strategize, and re-launch again more prepared for success.

This single insight was one of the most important thoughts I'd come across in years. This little book packs a powerful message!

The Encyclopedia of Fault Tolerant RAM Design

Archeologists today are in possession of clay tablets that still bear on their surface the symbols that were written on them over 6000 years ago. As a result of improvements in fabrication technology, today's integrated circuits can store many millions of times as much data in the same volume. Further improvements are expected - within 10 years it is expected that silicon chips with a billion transistors will be manufactured. The downside, of course, is that these circuits are extremely fragile. The stored data and the circuits themselves are prone to a host of destructive forces. For example, a single alpha particle does not pose a threat to the writing on a clay tablet, but can change a RAM-cell bit. The problem affects more than just the commodity memory industry, since a larger and larger portion of many kinds of chips consists of memory arrays.

Over the years a vast amount of research has been dedicated to finding ways around this problem. This book, with a bibliography of 525 research papers, is a unique and comprehensive survey of the field. The mechanisms underlying hard and soft errors are described. The techniques for coping with these mechanisms include test and repair algorithms, built-in self-repair, reconfiguration, process and circuit techniques, and error-detecting and correcting codes. The book can be useful for designers, manufacturing engineers, test engineers and researchers.

The definitive resource

Expert translator Mary Dibbern presents Faust/Romeo Et Juliette: A Performance Guide, an in-depth translation of two of Charles Gounod's great nineteenth-century operas, which were in turn based on the classic parables of "Faust" by Goethe and "Romeo and Juliet" by Shakespeare. Faust/Romeo Et Juliette juxtaposes each line of the original French dialogue with a pronunciation guide for the French indicating which phrases are stressed in performance, and the English translation. Though footnotes noting where the libretto is an exact quote or a paraphrase of its original literary source are present, Faust/Romeo Et Juliette is far more than a simple scholarly or literary reference; it is intended especially for anyone determined to faithfully produce, conduct, or perform Gounod's great operas regardless of their level of fluency in French, and to this end includes literary source footnotes and essays explaining the development of the libretti. The definitive resource for students, teachers, scholars, and performers of Gounod's masterpieces.

Candy wrappers and light bulbs.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-13
Felix Gonzales-Torres ( 1957-1996 ) was a many-sided artist.
He uses photographs, A1 sheets of paper stacked one upon the other, light bulbs ( white not
colored ) and even large amounts of candy wrappers with the same colour.

He has everything of a minimal art performer and yet the materials he uses ( albeit not at the same time ) and the different ways of displaying his art ( walls of buildings, corridors, rooms and staircases ) are so complex that it would be laughable to call his work 'minimal art'.
If it's necessary to give him a name I would call him an explorer. I believe it's the purpose of an artist to search what lies beyond the horizon.

I believe also in the value of abstract art. It emphasizes the essence of what we see: colour, shape and the different relations between one and the other.

Art with artificial light is the fascinating area between abstract painting and sculpture. Only a few artists so far, had the courage to walk that borderline and one of them was Gonzales-Torres.
His 'light-art' is simple ( He uses for instance only burning white lamps ). For example a large corridor in a modern building has several garlands of light against one wall, or strings of white lights attached to the ceiling and pouring down like rain to the floor to form a pool of light.

If you want to know all about Gonzales and his different forms of art, please read the fascinating
book " Felix Gonzales-Torres " by William Bartsman and others.

Doing Psychology Differently
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-04
There are no books available in the U.S. today that are designed to show what it might be like to do a feminist postmodern psychology. Using qualitative methods and non-traditional writing styles, I try to accomplish this by incorporating ways of doing and presenting research that will be unfamiliar to most gender psychologists. The goal I set was to inspire others to experiment with new methods, new presentational modes, and new ways of conceptualizing gender issues. It is an experiment in beginning an endeavor; not the last, or best of what there might be. I could imagine this as a useful textbook in courses in women's studies, psychology of gender, sex roles, and methods.

Although this book refers only to Australian festivals and events, it's loaded with management lessons, concepts and strategies that are universal. This is the best book I've been able to find on a subject that is scarcely written about (referring to large festivals). Thank you Johnny Allen, William O'Toole, Ian Mcdonnel and Robert Harris for sharing your knowledge.

This book has been long overdue! A forgotten piece of American History has just been brought back to life. The turn of the 20th Century produced an element of excitement and history that could only be found at Coney Island. These are firefighting heros that could only be found in one scope of mass entertainment. They are brought back to life here in this book that has been well researched and written. Once you start reading it, you'll be both hooked and fascinated!

Performers make a crucial contribution to narrative films. By moving through exemplary sequences, this book closely follows the movement and behaviour of screen performers - Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, Irene Dunne, Marlene Dietrich, Barbara Stanwyck, Richard Widmark, Joan Bennett, Theresa Wright - and by emphasising their relationship to other aspects of film style - camera, location and plot - it develops accounts that are specific and involved. This study concentrates on films from the 'Golden Age of Hollywood and moment-by-moment descriptions enable fresh interpretations to emerge and evolve. These reveal the significance and intensity of a performer's engagement with the world of a film.

'Andrew Klevan's beautifully conceived and elegantly realized introduction to film performance is not less than a superb introduction to the great art of film as such. For those beyond the introductory stages of understanding their fascination with film, the book will confirm and provide companionship in thinking about the power and the permanence of the memories of films and performances that inhabit our consciousnesses and the disproportionate shallowness of the words we customarily settle for in accounting for these stretches of our lives. For those whose love of various cultures of film, and of their histories, continues as essential to their imaginations of life, the care and pleasure in Andrew Klevan's selection and treatment of his examples are causes for surprise and gratitude.'

Stanley Cavell, Walter M. Cabot Professor Emeritus of Aesthetics and General Theory of Value, Harvard University.

'A first-rate work ... highly original in its approach, beautifully written, and elegantly crafted to make its strong case without wasting a word.'
- William Rothman, University of Miami
