Failure & ProgressReview Date: 1999-12-05
Gary Ryan Blair explained to me that failure does have an ulterior motive... not to get you to quit, but to stop you long enough so that you may learn something, re-strategize, and re-launch again more prepared for success.
This single insight was one of the most important thoughts I'd come across in years. This little book packs a powerful message!

The Encyclopedia of Fault Tolerant RAM DesignReview Date: 2002-06-20
Over the years a vast amount of research has been dedicated to finding ways around this problem. This book, with a bibliography of 525 research papers, is a unique and comprehensive survey of the field. The mechanisms underlying hard and soft errors are described. The techniques for coping with these mechanisms include test and repair algorithms, built-in self-repair, reconfiguration, process and circuit techniques, and error-detecting and correcting codes. The book can be useful for designers, manufacturing engineers, test engineers and researchers.

Candy wrappers and light bulbs.Review Date: 2005-04-13
He uses photographs, A1 sheets of paper stacked one upon the other, light bulbs ( white not
colored ) and even large amounts of candy wrappers with the same colour.
He has everything of a minimal art performer and yet the materials he uses ( albeit not at the same time ) and the different ways of displaying his art ( walls of buildings, corridors, rooms and staircases ) are so complex that it would be laughable to call his work 'minimal art'.
If it's necessary to give him a name I would call him an explorer. I believe it's the purpose of an artist to search what lies beyond the horizon.
I believe also in the value of abstract art. It emphasizes the essence of what we see: colour, shape and the different relations between one and the other.
Art with artificial light is the fascinating area between abstract painting and sculpture. Only a few artists so far, had the courage to walk that borderline and one of them was Gonzales-Torres.
His 'light-art' is simple ( He uses for instance only burning white lamps ). For example a large corridor in a modern building has several garlands of light against one wall, or strings of white lights attached to the ceiling and pouring down like rain to the floor to form a pool of light.
If you want to know all about Gonzales and his different forms of art, please read the fascinating
book " Felix Gonzales-Torres " by William Bartsman and others.

POSTED BY THE AUTHORReview Date: 2005-03-09
Performers make a crucial contribution to narrative films. By moving through exemplary sequences, this book closely follows the movement and behaviour of screen performers - Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, Irene Dunne, Marlene Dietrich, Barbara Stanwyck, Richard Widmark, Joan Bennett, Theresa Wright - and by emphasising their relationship to other aspects of film style - camera, location and plot - it develops accounts that are specific and involved. This study concentrates on films from the 'Golden Age of Hollywood and moment-by-moment descriptions enable fresh interpretations to emerge and evolve. These reveal the significance and intensity of a performer's engagement with the world of a film.
'Andrew Klevan's beautifully conceived and elegantly realized introduction to film performance is not less than a superb introduction to the great art of film as such. For those beyond the introductory stages of understanding their fascination with film, the book will confirm and provide companionship in thinking about the power and the permanence of the memories of films and performances that inhabit our consciousnesses and the disproportionate shallowness of the words we customarily settle for in accounting for these stretches of our lives. For those whose love of various cultures of film, and of their histories, continues as essential to their imaginations of life, the care and pleasure in Andrew Klevan's selection and treatment of his examples are causes for surprise and gratitude.'
Stanley Cavell, Walter M. Cabot Professor Emeritus of Aesthetics and General Theory of Value, Harvard University.
'A first-rate work ... highly original in its approach, beautifully written, and elegantly crafted to make its strong case without wasting a word.'
- William Rothman, University of Miami
