Shedding light on performing Debussy
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-25
This is a wonderful collection of 11 essays on how to perform Debussy's works. It approaches the problem from both historical and modern analysis perspectives. Several essays focus on how Debussy and those who worked with him approached performance of his works. Others use modern analysis techniques to shed light on how to perform Debussy's most intricate works. Particularly pleasant for pianists like me are two essays: "Debussy and Early Debussystes at the Piano" by Cecilia Dunoyer which surveys what can be learned from historical recordings and writings; and "Timbre, Voice Leading, and the Musical Arabesque in Debussy's Piano Music" by Jann Passler who selects two example works and analyses their melodic structure (not a simple task in Debussy's music) to better understand their interpretation. All the essays are very targeted and informative about how Debussy's intentions. A must-have for those who really want to understand Debussy's music.

Deep Strengths makes convincing what every top businessman intuitively knows -- positive communications frequently get better results than neutral or negative communications. Trouble is, of the 6,500 executives I've assessed and coached, most "manage by exception," squeezing people to perform rather than inspiring them. Pritchett blends rigorous research into practical messages so even the toughest bosses will commit to treating people with more respect. Get this book for the team, discuss it over lunch, and watch the mood and productivity improve!

Essential Reading for Dharma Practitioners

The 3 books in this series provide clarity where little normally is to be found...in Tibetan Tantric teachings. HHDL does a splendid job in the first volume (A MUST read) to eliminate confusion on different methods of Tantric practice. In this second volume in the series he again adds his characteristic insight to Deity Yoga. I sincerely believe no one should enter Tantric practice until they read all three of the books in the series.

Engineers of pavement design would benefit this book
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-04
This third edition of Design and Performance of Road Pavements intends to serve as a comprehensive reference guide on all aspects of pavement design. Its six parts consist of a general introduction, basic pavement design data, specification and properties of pavement materials, pavement performance studies, pavement design procedures, and surface characteristics of pavements. Some useful features are current standards and specifications from AASHTO, ASTM, and PSA; life cycle forecasting for both flexible and concrete pavements, and comparisons of U.S. and European standards and specifications. Discussions on the latest developments in pavement design and materials are included. Even though bibliographic references are provided for each chapter, the three and a half page indexing at the end of the book is not well done. Not only the technical jargons such as thermal warping stress, rut depth, and subgrade strength are nowhere to be found, the frequently quoted ASTM and PSA are also not available. As a result this book is hardly a user-friendly reference guide. Despite the incomplete indexing, Design and Performance of Road Pavements is recommended for purchase.

One of the best books I read lately... Finished it in one night... couldn't drop it off my hands.
Step on the author's feet, and take a walk through their experiences... Theory... design... sim... measurement... and their interaction... I've got a PhD on PLLs, I still had to say "wow" when I was reading this very well written book.
Highly recommend it ;o)

A Babbled of Green Fields
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-09
Who could dispute David Orr's central contention that we need to continue making buildings that can sustain themselves, so called "green architecture," and that there's no better place to start than at home. His is an impassioned voice that occasionally reaches the oratorical heights of a Thoreau or a Lewis Mumford, and his account of the events leading to the opening of Adam Joseph Lewis Center at Oberlin (Ohio) is worth reading from the viewpoint of agitprop alone: it is the green equivalent of THE CRADLE WILL ROCK.

Alas, it lacks music altogether, and some of its purpler passages should have gotten the red pencil. And while they had the pencil out, they might also have marked up some of the endless and dull passages about persuading this one, selling the idea to that one, many Ohio and government worthies who seem to have stepped out of an early Sinclair Lewis novel. In most cases Orr doesn't mind giving himself the heroic role, but he's the man and we might as well acknowledge it. He's not only the hero, he's the Jeremiah of his own legend. His writing style is accessible: not for Orr the theoretical flourishes of his kinsmen. In fact he harbors a certain contempt for the jargonheads, even ones who share his preoccupation with the green. He has a telling anecdote in which a San Francisco cosmopolitan, invited to give a speech, turns place into an abstraction and bewilders a room full of hardworking Ozark peasant women who give her a grim glare of blankness. These were women who lived, as opposed to the San Francisco woman who could only speak. He quotes Lao Tzu with a certain wry approval: "One who knows does not say and one who says does not know."

In that case he knows and says everything that needs to be said. With the Lewis Center slated to open shortly, we will see the first colleege built building capable to sustaining itself since the original Oneida Foundation in upstate New York during the Transcendental years commemorated by Hawthorne in his BLITHEDALE ROMANCE. Yes, the cost of making such a building is higher than your ordinary strip mall, but in the long run it's the strip mall that's going to cost us more, and as Orr points out, costs decline geometrically as more and more buildings go green and the technology is shared by many. Plus he prevailed upon numerous foundations who were swayed by his appeal and his honesty. His book ends up paraphrasing Wendell Berry to the effect that "to live, we must daily break the body and shed the blood of Creeation. When we do this knowingly, lovingly, skillfully, reverently, it is a sacrament." I wouldn't put it that way myself, but at the heart of the matter, Orr's on the side of the Lord.

Flexible, Adaptable, Effective Training Activities
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-11
Long one of my favourite training game designers, Thiagi has given up all his very best secrets about interactive training in his book "Design Your Own Games and Activities."

Here you will find dozens of brief activity descriptions, 32 chapters, and 30 fully described training activities neatly compiled in one book. Need a better justification for this treasure chest? Fine--Thiagi describes 10 workplace trends that demand interactive strategies, including teamwork, learning organizations, and the changing characteristics of learners. The appendices include a glossary of 62 interactive strategies, indices of the activities in the book, and dozens of resources on everything from the design of interactive strategies to theory to workplace applications to websites on interactive strategies. Plus, a CD with the instructions and handouts for each of those 30 fully described games, ready for you to print off and use.

Each chapter covers a specific type of interactive strategy, and starts with an example. Thiagi then outlines the benefits, uses, and limitations of the strategy. Finally, one of those fleshed out examples is provided. Although the game can be played in a training session as is, you have enough information to adjust it to your own audience's needs. Plus the debriefing questions provided for each activity are extremely helpful.

I've used most of these activities, and found that this gem of a book has paid for itself many times over. TOP TIPS is an excellent game for sharing best practices. THIRTY-FIVE makes a great session review. TRIPLE-JOLT's Team Poker I is one of my favourite team-building exercises. QUICK DRAW illustrates cooperative creativity very well. This one volume alone can create the core for scores of training sessions--at a fraction of the price of many training activity sets available through other sources.

This one comes highly recommended.

Brown has done an outstanding job of capturing the elegance and brilliance of EPSS in a format that makes it easy to understand and reapply. Her methods have helped my company create a foundation on which to engage a paradigm shift from training to just-in-time performance support.
