Can YOU keep 52 secrets?

Looking for a quick fix to some really annoying clarinet problems? Now you can surely relax, because Michèle Gingras is here to save the day. In size, this book is smaller than your average method of study, but in content, look out! She has divided her book into 7 sections of 52 secrets for common technical and musical issues in clarinet practice and repertoire. Gingras' writing is very "to the point" without the life stories, personal experiences, and strongly directed opinions of many other current books on the market today. I believe that because she uses this particular style of writing, she is able to cover so much more in such a miniature book, perfect for having with you at all times.

Never does she state a method of instruction without also telling you exactly how to practice it. This book really uses nature as its primary example of what clarinetists, and really all musicians, should follow. Gingras feels that rather fighting and working against nature, we should use it to help us in every way possible. Although this book is intended for the advanced clarinetist, many of her explanations would be very helpful to intermediate and even beginning students; her book is that user friendly, and not intimidating in the least. I especially feel this way when she refers to tonguing and finger/hand positions, which are probably two of the biggest challenges younger students face when first approaching the instrument. Included at the end of her book is a CD that demonstrates with her own playing each musical excerpt inside "Clarinet Secrets." In my opinion, you'll never be without a clarinet teacher as long as you have this book. Anyone who knows this professor can see that inside "Clarinet Secrets" is one hundred percent Michèle Gingras. One more thing...these "secrets" really work. An alternate title for her book could be "No More Secrets!"

I enjoyed reading your book immensely. It was an ongoing revelation of our relationship over the past 12 years. The "light-bulb" was constantly being illuminated as the coaching principles you so clearly and succintly penned to paper shined before my consciousness. You truly have been practicing what you preach!

The depth of your research and how you incorporated into your thoughts and practice was appreciated throughout the book. It is well written and easy to follow and understand. I am recommending it to all my colleagues. We are not coaches but just understanding the dynamics you put forth are sound for any relationships we encounter in the future of our practice.

Some topics here are rarely found elsewhere
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-01
This book covers topics rarely found anywhere else. Hands-on hardware experience, or a book like this is required to actually build and/or simulate sensors with fidelity required to fully understand their behavior and performance. Phase noise is one example and they add a twist even more rare, that phase noise is aliased into the doppler target region by PRF harmonics above the target in frequency. That is, PRF modes, like rain or ground clutter, carry power spread into the target region through phase noise "down" instead of up in frequency (as we usually expect) over the doppler passband. Once described its rather obvious, but until such exposure, this is a phenomena likely to be missed. For that and other similar revelations this book has value. Sadly, Artech books have a nasty habit of passing over typos, making equations excessively frustrating to guess at what the author meant; they have weak, almost pointless indexes (though this volume's index is quite good); and we learn nothing about the authors. Even so, Artech remains one of the paramount sources of radar and electrical engineering. A good book, offered as part of the course at Georgia Tech (it's authors) when available.

Quality toolkit/process for guiding organizational change.
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 1999-02-26
More than a book, this is a terrific 'tool/process' in a three-ring binder, for guiding organizational change, which includes a forms disk. The authors present a systems-based approach to organizational change which is team-based. This is a field guide complete with checklists, charts, forms, graphics, criteria for choosing team members, guide to key meetings, a tracking and coordination matrix for monitoring progress, a summary of agreements, and agenda for meetings. This handbook is divided into three parts: developing the foundations for change; designing change; and implementing change. It is crafted for use by consultants, but is intended to make the organizational design methodology explicit and accessible so that clients can learn the change process and and shape it to fit their needs.

This is a powerful reference with enormous potential value, provided there is the WILL to take action and action IS taken. Of course, no consultant or book, or inpirational speaker for that matter, can make change happen; that is up to YOU, the client. It is having the will and following through-execution-that poses the ultimate challenge!

The work includes a case study, references, and additional resources. We highly recommend this book.
