Big is Not Always Better!

This is a well written and excellently researched book.
It uses various studies to show how tallness is not always advantageous for the individual and the planet.
As each Western generation gets progressively taller, Samarus argues more resorces will be used and longevity may well decline.
I have often thought that todays Western supersized babies and children not only look unattractive but are not necessarily healthy.

Only one thing that does not appeal to me, personally ,are the references to vivisection to back up theories. I personally find vivisection unscientific and unethical. I dig the rest of the book though.

A much needed objective and empowring voice

Samaras' book is an invaluable and rare resource for anyone wanting to explore the truths and myths around human height. We are all familiar with the assumption that taller is better, and have all lived with the consequences and prejudices (internal and external) of this assumption but height is a subject that is rarely discussed studdied or addressed.

As an engineer turned height researcher, Samaras takes a methodical approach to exploring this subject, showing that there are inherent advantages as well as disadvantages to all heights. Some of the chapters read like technical specs (complete with diagrams) so I cannot say that the book is a FUN read, but it does give the reader a multitude of tools for evaluating and appreciating the strengths of her or his body type.

For myself as a short person who had been given the message that my body was inferior this book gave me the essential tools to turn that view around and take my body back.

The definitive guide to performance improvement
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-11
This book is all you need to understand the process of performance improvement in organizations, and the "active ingredients" that impact performance. The book separates the snake oil and fads from solutions that are supported by research. It gives clear and research-based guidelines for diagnosing the causes of performance gaps and selecting solutions for knowledge, motivation, and organizational problems. Case studies illustrate the application of the model and rules. In addition, the book describes how to reliably and validly evaluate the effects of performance solutions and identifies flaws in some common approaches to evaluation. The book answers the kinds of "why" and "what if" questions that rarely get addressed. It includes a powerful model of motivated performance that can be used to address any motivational problems. This book gives one the arguments and references to support organizational development and training practices and also the arguments and evidence to abandon practices that have been shown to either be ineffective or to do more harm than good. If you want to understand why what you are doing works (or doesn't work), you need to read this book. It is unlike any other to date in the field of performance improvement and training. It takes the profession to a higher level and is a must for anyone working in the area of organizational development, performance improvement, or training.

Heard the Nightingale-Conant program, UNLEASHING YOUR
PRODCUTIVITY--written and read by Richard Ott . . . he's the
head of his own consulting firm and is an expert in the area
of personal achievement.

He shares a lot of useful ideas here and though I've heard many of
them before, it was nevertheless valuable to hear them again . . . in
fact, even writing them down now, I find myself drawn to this one
in particular:

Keep your expectations very general then they involve other people.
They [the other people] have a mind of their own.

How true that is, especially when they don't behave or act they
way I want them to do!

Among the other valuable tidbits I gained were these:
* Commit yourself to one thing every day.

* You can't control when things will happen. There are too
many uncontrollable variables.

* Every so often, do away with your "to do" list.

And this one that too many people forget at times:
* Visualization doesn't replace effort.

These tapes are worth the money!

I think this was the first book published on Dodge Viper. And,the publisher was none other than "The auto editors of consumer guide" so you know its a good book.Plenty of colour photos and detailed text in a hardbound cover printed on high glossy paper make these books unique.A great book to have if you can find a copy.

I will make this short. As an owner of this book, I love it. It goes through the early stages of the '92 RT/10 and its conception. It goes from the early prototypes to the production model in 1992. It has excellent pictures of the prototype and the '92 production model, as well as some really neat concept pictures.

Life in a Wild West Show gives a brief history of the American West. It gives an account of the Wild West Shows that toured the country, and lets the audiences have a taste of the western life during the days of early settlement. It also tells about life and living conditions of the actors. I would recommend this historical book to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, as well as teachers and parents.

I really enjoy this collection of arias and art songs...I've used it for at least 6-7 weddings now. It has a great variety to choose from, in case one gets tired of singing the "same old" songs for weddings. More importantly, the arrangements are perfect for a high soprano/coloratura, and it is not necessary to have to transcribe the key of the songs to fit a higher register. Also, a wonderful bonus is the c.d. that comes with the book that has each song recorded twice, once with a soloist to hear how the song sounds and to get ideas for ornamentation, and then a second time just with accompaniment, so one can practice all they want without having to bang out the notes themselves while singing. This book is a real gem, particularly if you have to sing in a lot of weddings or plan a lot of weddings.

This book is an excellent resource for the wedding singer. The accompaniment CD is extremely helpful and makes learning these classical songs very simple. The songs themselves are very beautiful and are perfect for showcasing a Soprano's voice.
The melodies are interesting, passionate, and melodic- not dull or common.
Highly reccomended for Soprano/Coloratura wedding singers.

An exceptionally good introduction to network performance

This is the book that really made me understand network performance. It covers performance/delay issues right through the protocol stack.

The Author works through examples to show the reader where performance issues may arise. Many popular products and protocols are covered.

Time after time I see clients moving LAN applications into the WAN environment and failing. All these clients make the same basic mistakes, mistakes they would never have made had they read this book.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I own three copies, while my employer owns two. We struggle to keep ONE copy in the office!

Forget SMART. Get HAPPI!

Review Date: 2008-05-02
Martyn Court's "The Winning Mindset" is a departure from many motivational tomes in that the reader feels a one-on-one presence with the author. The style is conversational, rather than pedantic, including a lot of vernacular "pep talk", much as a coach would deliver to his team during an intermission. This unique delivery involves the reader immediately on what becomes a compelling and fruitful ride.

At times one can hear oneself resisting Martyn's observations and prescriptions, yet, almost telepathically, Martyn anticipates that and answers those objections swiftly and to the point - just like one-on-one coaching.

Though there is overlapping content with other books of this genre, such as positive imaging, emotional involvement, releasing, and so on, Martyn brings only what you need for positive results, leaving the embellishments aside. One of the greatest contributions for me was to forget the "SMART Model" in favor of the "HAPPI Model". Very good stuff here.

I recommend this book highly for results-oriented athletes or achievers of any sort.

More a way of life....

A comprehensive guide to all Wizard products

L. Frank Baum's Wizard Of Oz has created 39 official sequels, over a hundred unofficial sequels, nearly 40 films, and much more: so any collector seeking a comprehensive guide to all Wizard products must have The Wizard Of Oz Catalog to keep track of all the formats and take-offs. All forty Oz books in the original series, related books, films, videos, comics, radio shows and more are cataloged in entries which cover performers, plots, and more. No price guides, but this is intended as a catalog of Oz products.

All I Ever Wanted To Know....
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-28
...about Oz in all its permutations. This compendium of Oz knowledge was not only educational in all of its entries but it was fun to read, too. Sherman imbues his catalog with critics reviews, editorial comments and asides that make the factual information come alive with the Hollywood of old and today's fascination with the movie, books, and memorabilia.

There are capsule synopses of all the original books along with movie, radio, stage, advertising, and computer game adaptations as well as actor/production credits. Pictures and illustrations give an insight into the characters and the graphics of the time.

Some of the interesting info covered in the book:
1. Baum intended to break many of the unofficial "rules" for children's fairy tales
2. David's Lynch's movie WILD AT HEART staring Nic Cage is a retelling of the Wizard of Oz story.
3. Baum's widow decided to reject Disney's offer to purchase the rights to make an animated movie and instead sold the rights to an animator who failed to bring the story to the screen.

I bought this as a gift for a friend and wound up keeping it for myself.
