This book is the single best resource for learning the internal quality auditing skill. It take a very pragmatic and simple approach to this subject, that is often presented as a mystical activity. Mr. Arter has stuck the basics here, emphasizing the importance of the relevance and significant of findings cited, and explaining how to present findings in a supportable manner.

Especially recommended for small business owners

GREAT BOOK...THE BEST DEA CD
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-20
The book is excellent with a nice mix of theory and applications in DEA. I believe this is the best book on DEA. Of special interest is the CD that looks at many DEA models. The CD has no competitor and is by far the best around. I have used this CD in many of my academic papers on DEA. If you need DEA software this is the book.

beef up your Excel spreadsheet with these radar functions
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-14
I love the disk that comes with the book. It adds user-defined radar library functions to your Excel spreadsheet. No more being in a crunch and having to figure out how to do a calculation. The number of funtions is quite large. The installation instructions are clear, and worked the first time. Once installed, they are as easy to use as any other Excel functions(sum, sin, etc). The equations are viewable and changeable, if you want to change from the 'read-only' protection on the Radar functions library file. I have not had any problems using the functions provided. The book gives background reading on a topic, explains the use of the function, inputs, and outputs, and gives examples. The book and accompanying disk are a nice combination.

An Excellent Reference for Radar System Analysts

First, let me say up front that I have worked with the author, so my opinion is necessarily biased. However, even if I had no association with Mr. Curry, I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to any radar system analyst. With a solid understanding of the topics presented, the reader should be able to systematically analyze the performance of any search, tracking, or MTI radar, even when faced with incomplete information regarding the specifics of the system. The VBA code is useful for making quick spreadsheet calculations, and also provides a valuable resource for validating the implementation of algorithms that are integrated in more elaborate radar system analysis codes. Particularly interesting to me were the chapters detailing performance against jammers and those covering modeling of volume search modes.

The author has also developed a weeklong radar modeling course based on the book material that nicely complements the exposition in the text. I highly recommend the course, as it offers a unique opportunity to exchange ideas with a man whose experience & insight run deep.

I would particularly recommend the book as a follow-up to Toomay's "Radar Principles for the Non-Specialist" for the reader who has developed a qualitative understanding of basic radar concepts and wants to perform quantitative, concrete analysis.

Even after giving customer service a heads up, I still only got one of the ten. Called, got ONE more. Called again...no sign of the next 8 more copies.

They offered me a refund, don't want it. It is a GREAT book, and I use it, so I want it, all 10 copies.

Don't order it until you see a RESOLVED message from someone....

The book is excellent. However the price is for ten copies and Amazon is only shipping one. Be aware that this is supposed to be a bundle of ten copies for the price listed.

Mr. Bowsher's view of workplace performance is right on key. If only the top management had listened at IBM, before their fall from marketplace grace, it would be mentioned in the same breath as Microsoft is today.

Good, readable psychology of winning
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-18
I found this book full of good, practical things you can do to have a "champion" mentality in all areas of life. The book is broken down into chapters that are easy to understand. Who can argue that optimism, relaxation, focus, and self-discipline are necessary to being a "champion" ? The book has something like 45 concrete things you can do to bring this winning focus immediately into your life. Alex Rodriguez (NY Yankee All Star) uses this program, and it would be hard to argue that it hasn't worked for him. If you think of people that are champions, they all show the characteristics of this program: relaxation, optimism, focus, etc. Michael Jordan sticking out his tongue as he drives for that winning shot, Joe Montana joking with his teammates on that final drive in the Super Bowl, all are examples of the SCORE program. I do agree with the first reviewer, who wrote that the one chapter that states that we basically use "vibrations" to send out our thoughts, even for miles, is a bit odd, and just to me unbelieveable. But if you ignore that chapter, this is an excellent book full of concrete things you can do now to be a champion in any area of life.

A Valuable System

Two weeks ago I read an article in the Boston Globe's sports pages about Jim Fannin that prompted me to buy this book. Apparently a lot of other people did as well; the day the article ran Score For Life jumped way up on the Amazon top 100 list.

I was intrigued by the idea that champions have fewer thoughts than average people. An average person has 2,000 to 3,000 thoughts per day (personally I think I have more) while champions have only 1,100 to 1,300 thoughts.

I've been following his program of setting goals, affirmations and visualizations for a week now. Already I've started running, am beginning to get my house organized, and feel more productive at work.

However I have a few caveats. Jim Fannin is the enemy of introspection. He regards it as the province of non-champions, e.g. losers. He has a five second rule for mistakes. You can think about a mistake for five seconds and then you should act like it never happened. I can see how this would be useful in athletics - they need to be playing in the now and not beating themselves up about not catching a ball. However in other arenas of life, such as one's personal life, you, at least occasionally, need to think about mistakes, why you made them, and how you can avoid making them again.

I feel that a lot of politicians might have read this book or taken his seminars the way they abnegate their personal responsibilities about mistakes.

In his final chapter, which he entitles WYOU You're On the Air, he talks about how everyone's thoughts produce vibrations that can be felt by the people around you and even those miles away. While I've often had these sort of feelings myself, intellectually I don't buy his explanation. He goes beyond trust your intuition into the realm of magical thinking. Basically he's saying people can hear your thoughts and you can hear theirs. It's a little crazy. But it's only one short chapter in an otherwise solid book.

All in all I gave it five stars because I've found it very helpful. If you were leaning towards buying the book, I'd say yes definitely buy the book. I'll update my review when more time has passed.

Sail Performance: Techniques to Maximize Sail Power

This book helped me trim my sails for best performance
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-19
I found this book a great help in sorting out the relative importance of sail fullness, trim angle, mainsheet tension, luff tension and vang tension. The result for me is faster sailing and better finishing positions.

Winning a sailboat race starts with proper sail trim. Marchaj describes in great detail sail aerodynamic throry with illustrative wind tunnel measurements and clear diagrams that allow me to understand the basic concepts. This understanding allows me to focus on the important aspects of sail trim during a race so I can continuously maximize my boat speed.

He explains how to use wool streamers to show what the flow is on the lee side of the sail. The use of wool streamers allows me to rapidly trim the sail to an optimum point.

This is the first book of Marchaj's I have read, at the advice of the Amateur Yacht Research Society. It is an excellent survey of the physics of sail power, focusing primarily on sail issues. It is a fascinating read for any sailor who cares about the performance of their vessel or is curious about an explanation of sail physics beyond the five-minute airfoil explanation.

All The Info I Need
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-06
M Bijaoui takes a balanced approach to both theory and practice in this book. A good half share of the book describes the underlying theory of scaling systems, but without diving too deeply in complex systems theory. On the other hand, it actually describes (presumably from real world experiences) the practicalities of scaling up Exchange.

Its pitch is just about right: not so deep that you'd get the bends, but just deep enough that you can get by with a snorkel.

Right in the sweet spot!

This topic is clearly right in Mr. Bijaoui's sweet spot and he delivers with a home run. If you are looking to build a big, honkin' server, but also want to know all of the gotchas along the way, this book is for you.

Just what I was looking for...
