Subalusky is right on target with his extremely well written book the Observant Eye. I too am a product of the nuclear submarine force and the nuclear industry and can tell you without any reservation that the observation techniques discussed in this book are the best skills a manager can use to truly know what's going on with his/her people. Bill Subalusky does an excellent job describing the benefits of and how to critically observe performance. He should know - he's an expert at it. I commend this book to any manager or management team seriously interested in improving performance. While the techniques can be useful in any industry, they are particularly applicable to complex businesses where human errors must be minimized to prevent serious consequences.

Tracking the Voice of a Generation

Olof Bjorner and I were separated by the Atlantic Ocean in the 1960's, but we had much in common. For example, we each discovered Bob Dylan's music in the 1960's, music which always seemed to reflect our lives. When we were outraged at injustice, we heard his voice; when we were confused or angry, we heard his voice; when we were in love, we heard his voice; when we were in the mood for a party, we heard his voice; when we feared the apocalypse, we heard his voice; and most of all when we wanted expression in music, we heard his voice. And we can change the past tense of the preceding sentence into present tense, for in fact we still hear his voice today.

The urgency of Dylan's influence makes his work a terrific subject for study, and this first volume of Olof's Files sets the standard for fans who want to know where and when Dylan was recorded, what he sang and said, and who was there. Those who have never sat down to study Dylan's performances may be stunned by the depth of available detail. Those who have studied Dylan will be very pleased by this in-depth reference work.

Open the book to any page, and see what you discover. (Page 240) Dylan performed 19 takes of She's your Lover Now (a fine song intended for Blonde on Blonde but never released until 1991's release of Dylan's THE BOOTLEG SERIES Volumes 1-3)on January 21, 1966, then dropped it summarily. (Page 58) Provides a chronicle of Dylan's show at Gerde's Flk City on April 16, 1962 - were you there?

You get the picture. This book is an extremely valuable resource for those who love Dylan's music and want to discover more about it.

Best of all, this is just the first Volume in a set that promises to become *the* reference book on Dylan.

It has a great soundtrack, too.

If you love musicals, you can spend hours poring over this collection of reviews for the Broadway musicals that followed in the wake of OKLAHOMA. Hits and flops, all are here -- with some great insights and theatre diah provided by Suskin. For serious research or just plain fun reading, this is one of the most rewarding books ever published on the subject. (And the sequel is equally worthwhile!)

One of the Best Books on the History of Broadway Musicals

I bought "Opening Night on Broadway" when it was first published. I found it to be much more than a written recorded history of the Broadway Musical. It is a time capsule that captures the feeling of the periods when these shows first opened. The reader can almost feel what it was like to be there in 1956 at the opening of "My Fair Lady". Mr. Suskin gives useful biographical information about some of the theater's biggest stars. As someone involved in the business end of the theatre, I also enjoyed finding out whether or not a show was a financial success or failure. My only criticism is, I wish the book was laid out chronologically, not alphabetically. That way readers could get a better perspective of what else was running when "Guys and Dolls", or "Kiss Me Kate" or even "Donnybrook opened" All in all though, I found "Opening Night.." to be the hit of the season

Resouce for Aircraft Performance, Operations & Economics

According to Mr. Padilla, this book "is a compilation of some of the concepts and tools used by performance engineers in the analysis of airline-related performance problems." Basic concepts are presented about "carrying as much weight as possible, as far as possible, as fast as possible, at the greatest profit."

This 'technical operations manual' provides an excellent illustration into areas drawing from all pertinent disciplines: aerodynamics, propulsion, mechanics and restrictions.

There are many mathematical equations but it is presented in a very concise format. I agree with the author that this book "would fit well at the second-year level of a standard engineering curriculum." As long as the reader understands algebra, trigonometry, and some elementary calculus, the material should be a 'touch and go.'

However, I was never a whiz at mathematics, so it took me a little longer to figure it out without a dozen professors nearby. If you are like me, don't be timid. The presentation is clear enough to gain a foothold and establish a critical bridge into the more sophisticated concepts, terminologies and technologies.

A great book on economic operations

As a professor of aeronautical science in a large aviation oriented college program, I had been searching for a text which covered the economic aspects of airplane performance. The author does a wonderful job covering subjects such as the "cost index" and how it relates to economic climb and economic cruise conditions. The mathematics is very basic and should be understood by persons having taken algebra and perhaps introductory physics. This is the only text that I found that goes beyond the standard performance type topics in the direction of cost impact upon operations. The book would be excellent reading for aviation professionals or students of aviation. Great book!

Great Book!

Review Date: 1998-11-10
This book is definitely what the aerospace/aeronautical industry needed. As complicated/sophisticated as the airplanes are nowadays, aircraft performance is a very important parameter in design as well as operations. Cruise performance of the aircraft is probably the most important and sensitive segments of the flight as far as ecomonical impact to the operator. Fuel is one of the most important parameter in terms of cost determination. There are numerous techniques of prediciting and optimizing cruise performance, but they are not documented or taught in the academic world. It all comes from experience! But this book leads a person with sound technical knowledge in aircraft design and performance and refines it to a level higher! I definitely recommend this book for students as well as other working engineers!

Many of the other books talk about theories or are a regurgitation of the Oracle documentation. This book is different. This is a no-nonsense guide to Oracle performance tuning. The organization of the book makes it excellent to read but is packed with enough information that makes it an excellent reference. Both of Gavin's books are Golden. This book deals with the traditional OLTP type system. His DW tuning book is also excellent and deals with DW type systems. I would recommend getting both as they cover the correct application of Oracle technologies to solve specific problems that you might face as an application developer, architect, or DBA.

Patterns of High Performance: Discovering the Ways People Work Best

A great coaching approach.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-08
One of the assumptions in this book is that clients have "high performance patterns." This assumption goes along with what the relatively new field of professional coaching assumes -- clients are creative, resourceful, and fully capable of high performance. The "trick" is to discover what those high performance patterns are. The authors use client stories to draw out these often hidden patterns. I think that's a simple approach that can build deep personal awareness. It's from both this awareness of how one operates best, and the selection of appropriate roles that are a good fit for one's personal high performance patterns, that individuals can truly perform at high levels of excellence. One caveat with this approach, the analysis required to recognize high performance patterns might not be an easy thing for many people to do. Yet, it's very much worth it to look for them. Often, asking several others what they see about your strengths is a great shortcut.

career consultants read this

In this original and relevant book, Jerry Fletcher describes how each person has a consistent an unique pattern of high performance. This high performance pattern is a precise description of the unique sequence of steps that an individual consistently follows when he or she carries out an activity that has highly succesful results. The book shows how high performance patterns can be identified and how they can be used (for instance in making career choices, understanding and correcting performance problems and solving conflicts). The book is a joy to read (many examples) and is very recommendable for career consultants.

Denver's example has launched widespread local innovation in teacher compensation. In this book, Gonring, Jupp and Teske tell the fascinating story of how and why ProComp came into being. In readable, matter of fact prose, they explain the pivotal and distinct roles played by the school board, local and national philanthropists, researchers, consultants, political leaders, think tanks, union leaders, district leaders -- and "dumb luck."

If you are thinking about the role compensation might play in supporting change in your school district, this book can accelerate your understanding of what the conversation might feel like and who needs to be a part of it. It reads like a very short novel, especially if you skip the rather theoretical last chapter.

I hope that subsequent editions of this important work will include research findings on the various impacts of ProComp on student learning, teacher recruitment/retention/satisfaction, and community attitudes toward Denver schools.

As the mother of a 12-year-old in Denver's public school system, it's heartening to know that people in a position to effect change put so much effort into trying to get it right. The authors have written an interesting read about what could be a fairly boring topic - the flashes of humor they display probably helped them through some fairly tense moments. I would recommend this book to teachers, administrators, parents, politicians and anyone interested in improving K-12 public education.

The book that never was.

Review Date: 2007-07-27
Apparently this is a Pre-publication release. Amazingly it already has a sales rank. Probably orders by Amazon and others that will never be filled. I gave it a five star rating because of what It might have been and because I co-authored the book. It was ready to be sent to the printers when I discovered that there was a repeated spelling error in relation to the table of contents, The Starr Revolver Chapter and the index. To add insult to injury, the header in the above chapter read "Treason with a Hair Trigger- The Star Revolver." all the way through.

I am not an adequate proof reader and neither are the line editors and proof readers employed by iUnverse Inc.
Not wanting to endure a three year run of hearing about this, and possibly other spelling errors, I cancelled the contract and withdrew the book from print.

Had it been handled better, It would have been good.
Sorry about that.
