Got the book---I LOVE IT! .....Better yet, I am using it!

I have referred the book to several other associates at Bank of America. I find great value in the concepts of Planners and
Sidekicks. I am leading a project in the deployment of a number of substantial changes to the Bank's Desk top Sales Tool platform. In discussion with the Design and Development Team, I have introduced the idea of developing planner and sidekick performance support tools as part of the Learning Solution.

Allison, you continue to engage and improve my results.

Thanks!

Purchased and read your new book. Great examples! My favorite new learning was about the sweat-band job aids used by football teams. I'm trying to figure out how to use those as a training aid for new non-English speaking house cleaners . . . Will really help me sell my ideas to Sr. Management

Next I'll order a copy of your prior Job Aids book just to have it in my library. Thanks for gathering the examples and sharing.

I think Bob Rosen's book JUST ENOUGH ANXIETY is important enough for
Executives and those on the to way to that goal to read, and understand it will help you run your business and focus properly and successfully in your company.

I wish I had had the luxury, during the years I ran a business, of reading this guide to identify the problems and motivating employees on a consistent basis. Learning to understand the differences in anxiety and learning to focus with more controlled anxiety would have helped me grow the company in more progressive manner.
.
I feel the book has enough skills to help non-executives, seniors, and retirees. Everyone has ideas from past experiences, most think we understand the present, and many have no concept how to embrace and focus on the significant changes the future will bring. If we choose the idea that anxiety, {JEA} will help us on this journey, the future will help us be more effective citizens.

A Book Worth Reading

In Just Enough Anxiety, Dr. Robert Rosen gave just enough information to shift my perspective on anxiety. There are a glut of books on the market advising readers how to relieve their anxiety, or rid their lives of it. This book stands out because it acknowledges that, in today's world, anxiety is a constant and inescapable companion for all of us. The news isn't as bad as it sounds. Dr. Rosen outlines how each of us can monitor, control and harness the energy of anxiety to become more productive in our own lives and on the job. The book is filled with compelling examples of some of the most successful business leaders who have done this. The good news is that the principles in the book apply to anyone---those at the top of the career ladder or those on their the way up. I highly recommend it.

Key performance indicators (KPIs)are measurements of how well you are meeting goals or objectives that have been identified as success factors for strategic and tactical initiatives. There are two ways KPIs are used: (1) to determine to what extent critical success factors are being met if your approach is strategy->critical success factor->KPI, or (2) as to quantify goals if you are using the Goal-Question-Metric framework. In either case, identifying the right things to measure and how much (or little) of whatever it is you're measuring is an indicator that you're meeting your targets is the difficult part.

This book has three parts: (1) an introduction to KPIs, and an 8-step approach to developing them, (2) exercises for working through the 8 steps, and (3) a facilitator guide. The third part of the book is a welcome addition because any process that is going to produce KPIs (strategic planning, process improvement or new initiatives) is generally a collaborative effort with stakeholders who may or may not see the big picture. This is especially the case when you're trying to develop and get consensus on what key performance indicators are valid in a cross-functional or enterprise-wide effort.

The eight steps themselves are straightforward and are provided within the context of a framework of Initiate/Build/Implement/Review.

INITIATE consists of three steps: (1) align the KPI development with any other activities that are affected by the specific initiative, (2) set the purpose for the stakeholders who will be involved in KPI development, (3) obtain consensus on how the KPIs will be developed, which is where Parts 2 and 3 of this book show their value). BUILD is comprised of steps 4 identify critical success factors, or in the case of the Goal-Question-Metric approach, identify the questions, and 5, select the KPIs or questions. IMPLEMENT is performed in steps 6, which is the development of reporting and review frameworks, and 8, using the KPIs as an enabler for performance improvement; i.e., refine them as needed. REVIEW is a single step, 8, which is a continuous monitoring and refinement of KPIs, as well as monitoring to ensure that they are still valid.

This is an excellent resource to support group planning and decision making. It's well-written and clearly presented. I especially like the inclusion of Parts 2 and 3, both of which will allow you to use this book as a meaningful tool instead of a "how to" guide. Highly recommended.

For some reason, this book is still the only one of its kind, delving into the performance art philosophies of Meredith Monk, Barbara Dilley, Ping Chong, and Spalding Gray, just to name a few. Beautifully illustrated, this book explores dance and performance art from a kind of Jungian/shamanist/Buddhist perspective. You can learn from this book just what it means to be an artist--or just what it means to be alive

Great Book on Performance!

Steinman's book really stands alone among performance art books. While there are many that document what particular artists are doing, this one offers a way in for a person who wants to perform (or know more about how performance artists work). The book is difficult to characterize: while not exactly a "how-to" manual, it inspired me to create new art and to think about how we tell stories with our bodies, with images, in front of an audience. Must reading for anyone interested in performance art, it will also be fascinating to those in theatre, playwriting, visual arts and performance of any sort. I lend mine out all the time (but it's one of a few among my many books that I make sure I always get back!)

Stress management is a considerable task for many people in every sector
of life, in every age group, occupation and aspect of life. The book
illustrates specific steps to take in order to identify the stress triggers and deal with them constructively. The lotus position is the ideal setting for relaxation and tension release. Belief systems, perceptions and uncontrollable events are classic stress triggers which the author tries to address in the book. Subjects can engineer less stress into their week by enjoying family activities on Sundays. This will set the tone for the rest of the week. Goal-setting, brainstorming and hot baths/saunas are classic methodologies to deal effectively with stress. The book would be very helpful in combatting the everyday stress triggers that we all face. The book is a good value for the price charged.

Stress and anxiety are natural parts of the human experience and can actually improve performance in challenging times. But for those of us with more than our fair share of tension, C. Eugene Walker has written a helpful book. Walker draws on theories from many psychologists, psychiatrists and other researchers in analyzing the origins of our stress. More importantly, he also provides techniques for overcoming and reducing tension - including more than 40 exercises that will help you calm down. While his basic principles will sound familiar to those who know self-help and personal-development literature, Walker does a good job of combining and organizing these points. We [...] recommend this book to a general audience, but also to top managers and executives who deal with stressed-out employees or feel the pressure mounting themselves.

For years I have looked for a credible book that traced the lineage of human and organizational performance improvement. All others had biases and lapses. This book written by one of the Masters who helped define and develop this field has written the best account of our lineage I have ever seen. It is beautifully written--clear, concise, accurate, and human--and meets (no, exceeds) my expectations.

It is a must for any student (senior or starting) in our field.

Although I selected Dr. Mager from all of the experts in the early 1960's to work with a major management consulting firm to introduce programmed instruction into European countries, and have stayed in touch since then, I learned more about him and his genius as I turned each page of this book. It is essential reading for everyone in the fields of education, training and management.

I am the author of this book, and I want to ask my readers for their patience. My schedule prevented me from getting this out on time, but if you stick with me it will be worth the wait.

This book is a dramatic extension of the material in my first book, Linux Cluster Architecture. Many of you wanted less tutorial and more detail about the different kinds of clusters. This book covers data (including Web) servers, supercomputers, and the fault tolerant, failover-cluster techniques, from the software developer's point of view, as well as the system administrator, and the performance analyst.

Thank you.

Tony White's "Make it Happen" is a terrific resource for anyone in a leadership position. His common sense approach to building the foundation for effective teams is time-tested and proven. The chapter on maintaining high performance teams is loaded with great practical tips, tools and techniques. And, since things sometimes go wrong despite our best efforts, there is a powerful chapter devoted to repairing your team. I am a big fan.

This handbook REALLY CAN "Make it Happen"!

Review Date: 2005-04-18
A factor that truly makes this book more of a practical handbook verses a heavy handed text of facts-is the ease and simplicity in finding, following, and acting upon the various methods of managing and organizing any team or staff. What this book lacks in size it more than makes up for in content, making it even more ideal to keep it close by in your desk, briefcase, or work station, as opposed to being lost in your book shelf or library.Illustrations are simple and easy to follow, though not in color or glossed over which results in less of a destraction anyway. What makes it so worthwhile, as it's cost is quite minimal to begin with (under $20 US), is the fact I have already perused through it only minutes prior to a meeting of my peers, only days after reading the whole book! The point forms are easy to follow & stand out as a check list of what to do, and how to do it, and can help as a mini-refresher course, when the pressure is on and you only have minutes to get it done. Though I feel its cover is a little too glossy (I have an aversion for glossy books & mags), and yes I know we should not judge a book by its cover, but I hate giving 100% reviews. Yes, Tony White could have added more and extrapulated here and there, but then it would have lost the basic quality and ease, that he probably set out to do in the first place! If you follow this book religously like the 'office bible'it just might become, I see no reason why you can't "Make it Happen".

This is a gorgeously printed state-of-the-art book on marionette making. I have so many books from the past on this, but it is so delightful to see something current, and this is it. This is bound to become a collectible book. Be sure and get this one before it is out of print - I doubt many were made. Great stuff on trick marionettes, as well.

This was a great book. Many technical stories and analysis of how things tick and the people who keep them ticking. This may be especially geared toward aircraft nuts, but it was still good for anyone interested in powered things. It even included a story on Steinway Pianos - very interesting.
