Grant Wiggins has written an excellent book that delves into, not only the ways in which we can change current assessment practices, but he also explores ways in which we can change policies that drive assessment practices. Wiggins explores various assessment techniques that are found outside the realm of traditional assessment. This book is an amazing eye-opener and it is written in a way that is smart and sometimes humorous. If you are looking for a book about education assessment that causes sporatic narcolepsy you are in the wrong place. Buy it. Read it. You won't be disappointed.

As a veteran of over forty years on Broadway as a scenic, lighting and projection designer, I can say without hesitation that there is no other resource more valuable than The Entertainment Sourcebook. This wonderful resource is compiled by the folk who do the hard, often unseen and unmentioned, work that make us with prominent program credits look good on opening night. Not only are the listings accurate, but they are constantly monitored by the members of ATAC, added to, and changed or eliminated when required. So you're always up-to-date. In this age of fast-paced change in "the business", it's extra vital to be well informed. I'd bet my Tony nominations on this book. In fact without it, I'd probably not have them. And a big "hat's off" to the people of ATAC who make this great ever changing resource possible.

The Association of Theatrical Artists and Craftspeople is the professional trade association of artists, designers and craftspeople who work in the industry - some of the most talented available - and their 2005 Entertainment Sourcebook is a 'must' for any serious theater production, outlining sources for jeweler's tools, specialized paints and dyes, theatrical supply houses, and much more. Listings display phone, fax and email contacts, include web sites, phones, hours and addresses, and add a synopsis of both payment methods holdings. Simply invaluable for any industry pro.

This is the best book I have ever read on the subject of nutrition for horses. With all of the charts on every vitamin and mineral needed for equine's, it is very easy to understand for the lay-person. This book goes into great detail on precise amounts needed for each type of discipline and what you may need to add or subtract to "balance" your horses diet. I would strongly recomend this book for any and every horse owner's library.

I can't say enough about this book. These days we are bombarded with these ads for supplements the manufacturers insist our horses must have! But we can cause real problems if we don't know what we are doing. Too much of this? Not enough that? We can cause serious damage. This book will tell you exactly what your horse needs by taking in all kinds of factors such as how much work he does, where he lives, etc.

After buying several Literature Guides (Brave New World, Hamlet, Animal Farm) I am still impressed by the quality of material Ms. Bowers has created. This writing system truly delivers. I used it with both my 9th graders and 12th graders, and both were able to glean so much from the system. For my ninth graders, I was able to teach them a specific form and structure that many had not been given this far in their learning. For my twelfth graders, who still had a few problems of their own, we were able to really take the time to polish the structure they had learned, and use the "Polish" section of the book to make their essays even better. I am also grateful for the teaching guide and lesson planners along the way. Truly a great system, and a must in every Middle or High School English teacher's life.

I HAD to comment about this system. I had never heard of it, and was fortunate to see this at the CATE (California Association of Teachers of English) conference in February. I cannot express enough how much this system has. I have used the Schaeffer progam in the past, and had always found it to be a little difficult and complcated for my general ed students. I was looking for something that taught my kids how to write a great essay, but was accesible enough that all levels of students could grasp. I decided to give this writing system a try--and was VERY pleased! It begins with the vocabulary of the essay, then moves to the structure of the essay. Once students are familiar with the vocabulary and structure of the 5 paragraph essay, they then move to a focus on the different types of essays, and what makes each type unique. It even has quizzes to check for understanding along the way! From there, students get to actually take time to practice each step of writing, rather than jumping right into writing the entire essay. They practice writing titles, grabbers, focus statements, thesis statements, topic sentences, and challenges. From there, they get to really learn the concept of audience and tone in a great activity the kids loved! Once students have mastered the parts of an essay, they move on to evaluating an essay. They learn what makes an essay good (or bad) and evaluate several levels of sample essays. From there, they do an activity that teaches them how to put an essay together, by cutting and pasting an essay into the correct order. Once they have done all this pre-loading, I am able to choose from over 100 essay topic ideas and give them their topic. They put together thier own essay with one of three pre-planners and continue to write their own essay, now knowing the essentials of good writing. I cannot express enough how valuable this system has been! It even includes other things such as how to read an essay prompt, commonly misspelled words, word choice ideas, peer editing checklists, and rubrics. It even includes about 20 pages of overhead transparencies of the important whole-class activities and notes. This system is the best I have found, and WELL WORTH the money. This system has hundreds of dollars and thousands of hours of work done for me! I am just so pleased, and HIGHLY RECOMMEND this writing system to any junior high or high school teacher that takes essay writing seriously.

The stories collected in <> are easy to read, even gripping, and you might even end up sitting down and not getting up until you've finished the collection. Then you can go back and read your favorites again and again. Mine: "The Last of the Spanish Blood," "The Test," "Noise of Strangers." Read your favorites again and know that when Garrett (in the intro) calls the story a gift, he's speaking more truly than maybe even he realizes.

George Garrett is a consummate craftsman. There is no writer of short stories alive in America who can get you into a story faster than Garrett. If you want to learn how to write in this genre, there can be few better exemplars. It is true that you sometimes wish the stories ended more imaginatively, but they always do end inevitably--as they must. The pacing of Garrett's plots is always exactly right; his ear for dialogue never falters. The range of these stories is extensive, set as they are in small towns of the South (Florida), academic communities, military bases, Europe. The characters themselves include devilish boys, soldiers, mean-spirited academicians, small-town law. This collection, which will make you laugh and weep, is a book you'll want to travel with--it's definitely a book you'll be beating up.

I used this text in college and it was by far the most informative and easily read text I used. Hats off to the authors and contributors, job well done! I still use this book at work for reference, unfortunately other people feel its a great book and it was stolen. A text well worth replacing

This book is briliant for student of exercise physiology.The authors has manage to write it in a form that is easy to read, and makes the understanding of the subject easy.But yet it is not written in a way that simplifies the subject like so many other books.

Excellent reference and instructional manual. Super insight into team building, and a great assortment of team building activities.

This is a excellent book on the development of Teams and Teamwork in a corporate environment.

After writing the Red Room and several other wonderful books, Father is really one of Strindberg's most fantastic work. It is stunning how a person can describe human beings in the way Strindberg does, or did, since he past away over 80 years ago... Just buy it and read it.

Thomas Kelly's FIRST NIGHTS AT THE OPERA is bound to be loved by opera aficionados as well as people just beginning to be fascinated with a musical form that is both intricate and beautiful. Kelly selects five operas: Handel's Gulio Cesare, Mozart's DON GIOVANNI, Mayerbeer's LES HUGUENOTS, Wagner's DAS RHEINGOLD, and Verdi's OTELLO, and brings the readers to their premieres. Kelly gives us information about each composer, the story of the works themselves, a history of how each work was composed and the difficulties surrounding each production, the effect that each work had on the musical world of its day and how the work is still relevant today. We also get a good deal of information of the performance itself, those who sang the principal roles, the conductors, impresarios, and anyone else involved in the production. Much of Kelly's information is not unique to his book, though his presentation is original and his inclusion of interesting graphics and a number of relevant historical documents regarding each work make this work an invaluable resource. His writing style makes the subject approachable, something not all authors who attempt to write about opera can claim.

As I read the book, I began to long for December and the beginning of live opera broadcasts from the stage of the Met. The in depth analysis of each work presented in a user friendly format made reminded me of the intermission features which are presented during the radio broadcasts from New York's Metropolitan Opera House. These broadcasts introduced me to the world of opera and Kelly's book reminds me why I love this form of music so much.

If you love opera, you owe it to yourself to add this book to your collection. If someone you love enjoys opera, this book will be the perfect gift that will be enjoyed for years to come.

This is a simply marvelous book: well written, interesting, and informative. Prof. Kelly is that rara avis, an academic who can write. I highly recommend this book to the operatic newcomer and professional alike.
