Keep Working at all Costs!

My review is simply this, in all true knowledge something can be gained from it, if one views it in a positive manner. This book has knowledge in it and is the reflection of a devoted Artist. Negative opinions are a waste of time and energy. No single source of knowledge of music or any other subject is all one will ever need, so.... in light of this truth one must seek out knowledge and learn continuously if mastery is to be attained.

An absolute must have

I probably own a ton of instructional jazz-guitar books and the difference between any other book and this one, is that here you get up and running directly.

The author has really taken his time to figure out the optimum fingerings for the heads and solos. And to my suprise I hear my self running thru anthropology like a hot knife thru butter.

Belive me I experimented with other fingerings, but I hitherto have found the authors suggestions to be optimized.

Perhaps there are books that goes deeper into the theoretical aspect of Charlie Parkers music, but I personally think it's more fun to learn to play it first and only then analyse it.
Otherwise it's easy to get stuck ( and bored).

I cannot recommend this book enough. It's the best!
I hope and pray that the author will follow up with another one, (why not a book with Dizzy solos the next time?). When it comes I will definetly buy it. Until then, this book provides for plenty of magical moments.

Buy it and have fun.

This book is the one place to get all the information you needed for Performance Management. The author outlines how combining the traditional role of CFO and CIO, into the Chief Performance Officer can increase business value.
If you try to get this information from other books or industry analysts (ie. Gartner, Meta, Giga) there is no clear methodology on how to implement a program like this. This book offered the one-stop shopping for perormance management.
I like the short case studies in each chapter, since they drive home how people are really doing this.
It is a detailed enough book to get the right information, but overburdened with academic theories which can never be applied in business.
I would love to see a follow-on book for more case studies and the CPO in action.

I purchased this book for a 14 year old friend of mine. She was so excited!! She seems to really love the book and the fact that there is a CD to go with it. I purchased this version because it has the CD and the suggestions about interpretation and fingering.

Quintessential Romantic Piano Music
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-11
This masterly set represents every major feature of Romanticism. The modest skill requirements of no. 20 encourage the deeply emotional musician in the intermediate player, while the demands of no. 8 celebrate virtuosity. No. 16 indulges in stormy bombast, whereas no. 7 unabashedly embraces simple sentimentalism. The harmonic advances of the nineteenth century are explored in no. 9, while broad melody comes to the fore in no. 6. The serious, spiritual overtones of the central portion of no. 15 are balanced by the capricious whimsy of no. 23. The tonal clarity and simplicity of no. 3 are balanced by the complexity and, in some passages, virtual atonality of no. 14. And the grinding ugliness of no. 2 is matched by the elegant, sonorous beauty of no. 19. And the set as a whole successfully expresses so much variety that it offers a sensitive view of an awesome world every bit as deep and rich as (if not more so than) a Wagner music-drama, a Tchaikovsky symphony, or a Strauss tone poem. If you love Romantic music and don't know these pieces, you'll want to own them. If you don't love Romantic music, this set will probably win you over.

This text explores a wealth of information unique to the choral conductor. Outstanding for all levels of students and teachers of conducting, Decker & Kirk's text is well organized and presents its eclectic contents from the most basic information to the advanced in an easy-to-read format that also allows the conductor quick reference in the future. Musical examples can be found throughout the text with sample markings that emphasize the teachings of each chapter. Other highlights of the text include:

A prologue discussing the importance of communication in a conductor; The relationship of the conducting gesture to the expression of the music (Chapter 1); An in-depth chapter on preparing the score with careful consideration to the historical perspective and score analysis. This section also includes models for score analysis and sample marked scores (Chapter 2); An extensive section on the role of the conductor in rehearsal, the reasons for careful preparation and planning, how to plan for different levels, and the choral instrument -- the physiology (breathing, phonation, amplification), diction, expression, and developmental exercises (Chapters 3-5); A chapter focusing on the criteria and guidelines for selecting repertory and building a program with your singers and audience in mind.

An extensive section of appendices includes: projects for several of the text's chapters; a guide for teachers of conducting classes; a guide on capitalization of titles (in English, Latin, Italian, French, and German); a pronunciation guide that includes a Phonetics chart, and guides for Liturgical Latin, German, and French; an annotated listing of repertory for children's, adolescents', treble, and male choruses, and music for the church choir; a glossary of terms used in this text; a bibliography; and music for conducting practice and study that is organized by musical period. Also includes an alphabetical index of terms and composers that appear throughout the text.

This is a very useful book to help focus on how to develop high performance designs. It is a little dated on the technologies covered but gets the job done. One thing to remember is that microprocessor development methods usually will become ASIC development methods after a number of years and related EDA tool development.

A study of fast processor design
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-09
Whether trying to maximize the speed of a standard cell ASIC processor design or minimize the design time of a full custom processor this book describes, in detail, the considerations involved. The authors draw on real-world designs and extensively review several in particular. The book describes the impact on resulting processor performance of pipeline depth, clock tree design, register and latch choice, setup and clock-to-q times, slack passing, dynamic logic, logic design style, richness of standard cell library, wire and transistor sizing, floorplanning and other layout concerns, and the exploitation of process variation.

This book focuses strictly on processor circuit design and does not discuss software design, instruction set architecture, or die size and power issues.

Proving the value of coaching
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-29
Coaching That Counts is a must read if you are a corporate, executive or business coach or a consumer of coaching. This book takes the reader step-by-step through the process of creating and executing coaching initiatives that maximize the value for both the individual being coached and the organizations in which the coaching is conducted.

The authors clearly demonstrate (through empirical data and anecdotal stories) that the key for any successful coaching initiative is to link the objectives of coaching to the strategic goals of the organization. The book is organized to support this insight and opens with a thorough discussion of a client-driven coaching model that delivers lasting change. The second part of Coaching That Count focuses on how to harness the value of coaching at the individual level and direct that value to produce tangible results to the business. The third part of this book provides a complete understanding of how to develop evaluations that clearly link coaching initiatives to business goals, including how to demonstrate ROI.

Coaching That Counts provides both a blueprint and the tools for building, executing and evaluating a successful coaching initiative.

I highly recommend this book!

Exceptional Contribution to Executive Coaching Field
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-21
"Coaching That Counts" is a must read, particularly for the experienced executive coach and/or the corporate executive managing large scale coaching and leadership development programs.

Many fine books have been written separately on the topics of executive coaching and organizational development and learning. What sets "Coaching That Counts" apart is how it expertly combines the two topics seamlessly in a clear, readable and immediately useful format.

The husband-wife team of Diana and Merrill Anderson share generously their 30 plus years of combined expertise and insights in their roles as executive coach, corporate leader and organizational researcher.

The authors are pioneers in their respective fields. Diana is a superb and gifted executive and leadership coach and one of the first Master Certified Coaches with the International Coaching Federation (ICF). Merrill has contributed foundational and pivotal research-models for measuring return on investment (ROI) impact for training and coaching initiatives.

The book is divided into two parts. The first half describes in detail a comprehensive and provocative coaching model, called "Leading With Insight". The model describes 4 coaching quadrants: Reflective, Emotional, Intuitive and Inspirational. Each key coaching quadrant is expertly described first conceptually and then through case study presentations.

The second half of the book details very useful quantitative and qualitative ROI approaches for measuring coaching impact. Additionally excellent chapters are also included focusing on key steps, considerations and insights for conceptualizing, initiating and measuring large scale organizational change-coaching programs.

Of particular interest in the Leading with Insight model is the authors' observation that most current coaching work focuses on the first 2 quadrants, which asks the questions, What do I need to do now? and What am I made of? The authors explain that most ROI impact however occurs in Quadrant III and IV, which focuses on Organizational Alignment and Original Action. They share that less than 50% of coaching relationships currently evolve beyond Quadrant II, but that 70% of return on investment derives from gains in Quadrant III and IV. This has enormous implications for future executive coaching focus and pay-off.

In summary, this book is a call to action, challenging the reader to work deeper within themselves and with their clients to achieve broader, more impactful coaching outcomes and execute more accurate and measurable Coaching ROI analysis.

For advanced researchers and developers
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-08
This is an outstanding summary of research (as of 2001 or so) in leading techniques for compiler optimization in performance computing. There's not much here for the typical software developer, even those who write applications compiled for massively parallel systems. Most compiler writers won't find much of immediate use either - if you haven't mastered Optimizing Compilers for Modern Architectures and Parallel Programming With MPI, you're in for a rough ride. These techniques all apply to parallel systems, with hundreds to hundreds of thousands of processors acting together. And laugh if you want: many of these researchers address the needs of Fortran programmers. Anyone who laughs at Fortran just doesn't understand the performance computing market or the recent advances in that venerable language.

If you're deep into compiler development on that class of machine (or something similar enough) this collection presents 21 chapters, a bit under 800 pages, of cutting edge analysis and algorithms. Topics cover every level, from the micro-level checking of dependencies between one array element and another in a looped computation, up to macro-level OS level constructs for distributing and synchronizing coarse-grained tasks.

Even specialists will find only a few chapters that address their immediate needs. Specialists at this level, however, are used to that. Commercial gold mines today yield one gram of gold per tonne of useless tailings. The ratio is better in this case, but even readers with the greatest interest will skip parts of this goldmine of information. Still, if this is your area of interest, you may well find something of value. Highly recommended to the right reader.

Scalable parallel systems or, more generally, distributed memory systems offer a challenging model of computing and pose fascinating problems regarding compiler optimization, ranging from language design to run time systems. Research in this area is foundational to many challenges from memory hierarchy optimizations to communication optimization.
This unique, handbook-like monograph assesses the state of the art in the area in a systematic and comprehensive way. The 21 coherent chapters by leading researchers provide complete and competent coverage of all relevant aspects of compiler optimization for scalable parallel systems. The book is divided into five parts on languages, analysis, communication optimizations, code generation, and run time systems. This book will serve as a landmark source for education, information, and reference to students, practitioners, professionals, and researchers interested in updating their knowledge about or active in parallel computing.
