Dennis Moore has put together a clear, concise and very complete guide to building up a marine performance engine. Whether you plan to put together a very high performance motor or just make improvements to your stock motor, this book has the bases covered.

He has clear descriptions on the differences between automotive and marine engines, and details which components work best for the marine powerplant and why.

The background information he provides clears up many myths and also details how certain common practices came about and why they should or should not have a place in building up a small block.

The material is well organized and easy to navigate through.

I am currently bulding up a 350 for my boat, and this book has given me all the information I need to make the correct choices on parts and talk intelligently with the machine shops.

A goldmine of hard-to-find engineering data!

Dennis Moore has really done his homework on this and it's companion book on big block performance. The kind of detailed information provided in each of his books is very hard to find, and Dennis explains the performance significance of each step of the engine's assembly. I've been a professional engine builder for many years, and I'll definitely read these one more than once! A must-have for the marine small-block owner/builder.

Well worth your investment!

Since I now have my own copy, I can tell the world that this book is well underpriced!! The content of this book is so well written, easy to read, and chocked full of "experience and information", that it is easily worth more than three times what it sells for!

By having this book, I now feel that I have the confidance to build my own "hot engine", knowing I have the expertise of Dennis Moore (the author)looking over my shoulder as I build it!

Definately a must have!!

I am a physician and I gave this book to my son who is a high school runner. It's very well written and understandable. Many experienced athletes get bad advice which leads to injury or subpar performance. The information in this book will help them achieve their athletic goals. I highly recommend this book.

A conscise guide including useful information on nutrition, improving your mental game, dealing with advesity and other explainations of how to straight up improve your skills... Sound advice about optimal health, prevention and rehabilitation of injuries, all with the singular focus of imporving your performance.

The only drawback I found is its tough to jump chapter to chapter since the title and the author's name are the header of the page instead of the chapter.

Highly recomended for any athlete looking to boost their performance.

I have to admit that I don't even watch gay porn. But Keehnen's interview questions, ranging from the frivolous to the serious, make this a compelling read. Why get into porn? What are the rewards? What are the drawbacks? And who do the porn stars fantasize about? Keehnan's a deft interviewer and his playful side makes the performers happy to share their thoughts on sex, relationships, (usually difficult if you are in the business) aspirations, and more. Great for the fan or the armchair sociologist!

about 60 of the biggest names in the biz (literally) get a full 4-6 pages of interview questions, plus, of course, 1 or 2 nude publicity stills in which they look absolutely stunning. Along with stats for each star, including height, weight, SIZE, favorite sexual position, they are asked questions about how they got into the biz, the scenes they had the most fun doing, crushes and relationships involving other porn stars, and plenty more. And the selection of guys is diverse, including daddies, bears, black, Latin, twinks, muscle hunks, leather boys. If you love porn and its stars, this is definitely a cover to cover read, and not just for the pictures. It would be great to see a DVD version of this sort of book, with one-on-one interviews with the stars so we can get a more intimate feel for them as real men, not just onscreen fantasies.

This is a book that will make you think about who pays when executive compensation, principally in the form of stock options, is not in synch with with the law of supply and demand. The answer is that we all do: stockholders, employees, customers, suppliers and the general public. The author makes a compelling case that pay and incentives should be based on critical measures of company performance. It is not in our interest to create doubt about our corporate governance. Executive compensation planning needs to incorporate higher standards and we can no longer ignore whether stock options are an expense on the income statement. This book does a masterful job of laying out the most important considerations for the guardians of the corporate pocketbook.

I first encountered Earl Nightingale over 3o0 years ago near the beginning of my career as a U, Methodist pastor. His insights informed the practical application of Jesus' teachings in my sermon and teaching and living example. In a day of instant gratification obsession, THE STRANGEST SECRET ought to be required, repeated reading for anyone who would aspire to make their life count for others and self.

The most amazing characteristic of this text is the clarity with which it is written. I have read hundreds of motivational books, and this might be the shortest and clearest one on the topic of setting goals and living mindfully. A true classic! No wonder that the LP that this book is a transcript of received a Golden Record award, indicating that over 1 million copies were sold. I highly recommend also buying the CD and listening to it at least once every month!

The recording of The Strangest Secret is a true classic, and has long been a favorite of mine. This book is a word for word text version of that recording, and I am highly delighted with its publication. I bought two copies, one for my "favorite" book collection, and one for my granddaughter - I hope she reads it (perhaps the batteries will run down on her IPod someday.) The wisdom in this book can be a poistive life changing force. Buy it! Maybe someone you love will pick it up some day.

This book is well structured, written in an excellent style, with illustrative and relevant examples and figures. It treats in a systematic way all things a programmer should be aware of when designing and optimizing high performance applications. Beyond a reference for Sun's development environment, it is compulsory reading for a novice or intermediately experienced in this field, conveying a lot of information about compilers and hardware alongside. Again, I want to have this book in my bookshelf since it is a gem in the category of software books. Its graceful style complements the density of information. It is not a quick read, if you want to digest everything.

An excellent resource for people using the Forte IDE and C,C++, F77 and F95. I found the new UltraSPARC III compiler options to be very useful as well. HPC ClusterTools are also discussed and a good explaination of how to use them and when. OpenMP is also covered. This was a long needed resource that both myself and my customers will love! A good compliment to Cockcroft's "Sun Performance and Tuning" book (and updated info) for application developers and perf. tuning gurus.

I found that this book, after reading the balanced scorecard, took more of an outside-in view to management. The focus on reach as well as the categories from Kaplan and Nortons' version make this a definite improvement as a guide to performance measurement.

The book works on at least two major levels. At one level it provides a simple checklist for developing the right performance information. On a more strategic level I've found it useful to get a deeper understanding of how one area of performance impacts on others. I found that the Three Rs approach produced a fountain of insights when I used it to help guide a work team session. This book tops my A-list of key management tools!

A must for all key corporate decision makers.

The three point plan can probably be adapted to any organization that wants to improve the way it uses its 'resources' to 'reach' its target market and maximize 'results'. These are Three R's that business should be able to use to make sure its living up to its potential.

The methods introduced in this book are simply put, easy to follow and a complete guide to perform a Training Needs Assessment.

The book begins with breaking down who, what, when, why and how of an assessment. It introduces the issue that training is not always the solution to a deficiency and how to identify if there is a need for training or a need for another solution.

There are seven different analyses broken down into separate chapters to guide you in conducting successful analyses.

Feasibility Analysis- The cost of doing something verses the cost of doing nothing to correct a deficiency.

Performance Analysis- Also known as a gap analysis, a look at where your employees are and where you would like them to be.

Goal Analysis - Includes how to write a goal statement. Breaking down vague statements into specific behaviors desired by a company for succes

Task Analysis - The book will guide you in breaking down tasks within a job.

Needs versus Wants Analysis - Why should training be done? Is the deficiency tied to a need or a want? Again looking at finding the proper solution.

Target Population - How to develop an effective training program for the audience. How to identify the audience.

Contextual Analysis - How and when to deliver training successfully.

One very interesting point covered is to always deal with the decision maker during every processes. This will save time and money (yours).

Overall, a complete guide to successful analyses.

First is the collection of information. In order to proceed with any kind of training some information needs to be determined before you can even decide that training is needed. And if it is, what kind of training. Perhaps this is product training for the sales people. Perhaps it is time management. Perhaps the problem being addressed doesn't call for more training but some kind of change in the work flow, the people, or the computer system.

Second is the analysis of the collected information. This may be summaries, complete with charts and tables; this may find something so obvious that you will wonder how it was missed. The end of this phase is to present to the management requesting the study to determine what, if any training is needed.

Finally is the development of a training plan. The author presents a ten part plan that begins with Issue Definition, and ends with an evaluation of the results of the training. These steps have been defined over many years and are a proven approach.

A CD is supplied with the book that includes forms, checklists and other tools that are referenced in the book itself.

Other books I considered purchasing on this topic require interpretation of the content or demand a Masters degree in Organizational Development to understand the author's point. Given the multiple ways I have applied what I learned from the book, I consider this book one of my best purchases in the last twelve months.

This is a book about passion; the transforming effect of passion indulging, passion affirming, and passion compelling, work (called Occupational Intimacy in the book), which draws individuals (and thus the organization collectively) into performance, growth and learning. Throughout the book, the authors are clearly trying to convey the value of passion in the workplace, not only as an individual benefit, but as an organizational performance benefit... "Organizations that tap into their employee's deepest sense of personal purpose and values will harvest a wealth of passion focused on reaching mutual goals." Although, I would not describe this book as an easy read - the writing is dense and the material comprehensive - by reading this book your will gain an appreciation for these benefits and for some of the steps necessary to invoke passion in your work and/or your workplace.

A Company of One: The Power of Independence in the Workplace

Valuable insights into the congruency of passion and the wor
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-03
This book is one of a series on New Perspectives in Organizational Learning, Performance, and Change. The series is designed to showcase current theory and practice in human resources and organizational development. While there are practitioners on the editorial board, this looks like more of an academic series. I'd describe this publication as one for professionals, but a volume that individuals can benefit from, as well.

The focus of this book is passionate work. This concept will be difficult for many readers, since passion is emotion and emotion and work are usually considered incongruent. The authors point out, early in the book, that "Passion is at the root of creative genius, personal transformation, and notable events. Passion is emotional energy; it stimulates life and energizes individuals to work toward goals. ...New products, new ideas, creative ways to deliver services, inventions, an scientific discoveries are produced because someone or some organization is passionate." OK. Passion seems to be consistent with what we're striving to accomplish in employment organizations today.

How might we approach this? The authors explain that they've done some research that connects learning with passion. Put the concepts together and you get meaningfulness, and there are a lot of people looking for opportunities to feel a greater sense of meaning in what they do. Readers will be guided through an interesting study into passion, what it is, how it fits, and what to do with it. Individuals will gain, but trainers and organizational development professionals will find it most thought-provoking and stimulating.

The book is organized into eight chapters: Introduction to Passion and Work, The Foundations of Passionate Work, Passion Transformation Process and Cycle, Occupational Intimacy, The Discovering Process, The Designing Process, The Developing Process, and Transforming Work---the five keys to achieving trust, commitment, and passion in the workplace. An index will help you find your way back to those things you want to work with again. A number of exercises are included to stimulate your thinking and help you gain some sense of measurement in the emergence of passion in your personal and corporate life.

The book may seem a bit pricey for only a couple hundred pages, but there is a lot packed into those pages. The book is set mostly in 11 point type, so find a nice quiet place with good light to absorb all the authors have to share.
