Its the art, stupidReview Date: 2008-04-26
An extraordinary view of an indescribable placeReview Date: 2007-05-14
Burning Man is often described as being indescribable, and for good reason. So much of the art created there is ephemeral, lasting just a few days before burning to the ground. An entire city of 30,000 rises, falls, and disappears. To some, it feels like a heartbeat, and to others, a lifetime. To describe it in words is nearly impossible, when so much quickly becomes the elusive memory of memories.
Through Nash's remarkable photographs, we see a decade of visionary work and creativity that physically existed for only a moment. Whether you've been to Burning Man or not, this book will fill you with awe, and longing for the place.

Best book on this topicReview Date: 2008-04-21
This book is one that has the authentic "been-there-done-that" feel to it. It's well organized with great real world examples and has multiple lists at the end of each topic on how to make our athletes aware of the mental game and how to practice getting better at it.
This is a book you will read and re-read if you're truly interested in being the best coach you can be. It's one of those books where you can just open to any page and pick up a great idea or tip.

Coach Dorfman covers three vital areas in the book: The Coach as Leader, Communicator, and Teacher; Impact Terms for Coaches, and Impact Terms for Athletes. He provides real life examples from professional, college, and high school coaches and athletes that are easy to relate to.

Opera Geek heavenReview Date: 2008-01-14
There are very elegantly printed musical examples as well as the odd juicy snide comment about singers whose attitude to performing these works is less than thorough. Sometimes the detail is daunting and perhaps a little dry but you could pick and choose your chapters if this is worrying you.
How reassuring that books like this are still being written when the Music section of Borders is filled with biographies of such musical heavyweights as Sting and Bono.

Ahhhh! The rich feel of leather.Review Date: 2006-09-04
George Washington stepped down as President, and John Adams took up the task. The USS Constitution was christened and set sail, a fearless Frenchman made the first parachute jump (from a balloon) while Napolean annexed Austria, the scrub board was invented (no more pounding your clothes to get them clean), and the United States entered the world spice trade with a delivery of pepper to a home port. My own history was presumably affected by the birth of Archibald McLellan in Scotland, who would go on to become a "coach builder, and patron of the arts".
So I'm guessing, that with all that was transpiring around him, and with the additional complication of Thomas Paine publishing "Essays on Religion" that very same year, John Marshal sought out our author, Illustrated throughout with Woodcuts, to pen a simple, pleasing, repository of religion that would be amusing to the youth of both sexes. Surely, "Essays on Religion" could not boast any of these qualities. Surely, "Essays on Religion" did not contain upwards of three score separate performances. Surely, "Essays on Religion" (a much too brief title) was not bound in the rich, luxuriousness of leather.
And so, could I, I would buy this wonderfully telling title, and hope that it deserves the five stars that I am giving it.

A Loss of InnocenceReview Date: 2006-08-31
Now, perhaps in an attempt to tap into a larger audience, our author has left his tradition behind. In an attempt to generate upwards of three score separate performances, he has chosen to simplify his style and attempt to "please" the reader rather than enlighten them. There's something about this book that is too calculated, too confused between whether it wants to be amusing or instructive, too uncertain about which sex of youth it wants to engage.
One feels that Illustrated throughout with Woodcuts has been, shall we say, "domesticated." He has left his heritage behind to create yet another moral and religious repository, as if we needed one. Something has been lost.
I assign this book five stars for two reasons: 1) I hope it will encourage the author to return to the exotic and authentic stories of his youth, perhaps telling us more about his kindly grandfather, Printed on Pure Cotton Linen and Containing over 20-Full-Color Photographs. 2) The leather cover of this volume leaves me some hope that the author's true character is still there, struggling to get out through an expessive choice of binding materials.
What an entertaining, moral and religious repository!Review Date: 2006-08-31
The Bible comes close. It is amusing, instructive, entertaining and moral. But it lacks woodcuts. Plus, Leviticus kind of dragged for me.
Also, I like the title to tell me exactly what I'm going to get. For instance, if it were up to me, "The Trial" would be titled "Young bank clerk gets caught up in the machinations of a cruel and byzantine bureaucracy and they kill him at the end." See? Much better.
Five stars!

An Excellent Reference BookReview Date: 2006-09-03
The book is divided into 7 sections. 1. Nutrition, 2. Energy production, 3. Energy Delivery & Utilisation, 3. Enhancement of Energy Capacity, 4. Environmental Stress, 5. Body Composition & Weight Control, 7. Successful Aging, Disease Prevention.
It's a very thick book, but the paper quality is high and the colourful illustrations make it a joy to read. However, this is not simple book for the average man on the street. There is nothing sensational here - just pure science. Readers without a background in the life sciences may not be able to follow.

"the book" on exercise physiologyReview Date: 2004-02-27
I consider that the science of exercise physiology should constitute the basic knowledge for anybody who wants to understands the way the human body functionates and acutely and chronicaly adapts to the exercise stimuli.
No matter you are(or preparing to become) a PE teacher, sport medicine specialist, personal trainer, physical therapist, athletic coach, etc, you should understand the science of exercise physiology.
Dr. McArdle's " Exercise physiology" is definetely one of the most complete books ever writen on the subject. With miriads of grafics and pictures, and tons of scientific research descriptions and results, the book is quite pleasing to read and very convincing.
With more than 1000 pages, definetelly worths its price and even more. Contains as much information as you could find in 3-4 good scientific books and much more than the complete colection of "Muscle and Fitness" starting from 1970.
You can find detailed informations together with all the book ilustrations and even 4 complete chapters at: www.connection.LWW.com/go/mcardle

A Poet's LifeReview Date: 2004-10-09
EYES FREE is a story of triumph and the ability to change life's challenges into opportunities and then making the most of those opportunities. The author affirms this time and again as he takes the reader through his life's journey, frankly detailing his beginnings as "a child of some of the most god-awful blight the modern world has ever known."
Whether divulging the vivid details of his promiscuous lifestyle before, during, and after his failed marriage, relating the gritty details of his stint as a rapper and then drug dealer, or simply relating his experiences garnered during his travels as a spoken word artist, Acey manages to maintain a smooth, clear writing style that very effectively holds the reader's attention.
Rich with fascinating anecdotes and thought provoking observations, EYES FREE is a thoroughly engaging read and a true testament to the remarkable storytelling ability of Taalam Acey. This author writes with a fluidity of expression that leaves the readers hard pressed to put this book down.

A masterfully written must-have for lovers of spoken word.Review Date: 2004-01-23
Eyes Free is powerful on so many levels. It is a raw collection of pivotal events, places, people and other phenomena that will evoke a gammet of emotion. I found myself laughing one minute (the humor is off the chain) and going "dayum, T!" the next, all the while turning page after page after page into the wee hours of the night. Eyes Free chronicles the travels, trials, tribulations & turmoil of one of the world's finest jewels.
He covers early origins from the oral communication carried over on slave ships, to early poets like Phyllis Wheatley, to Harlem Renaissance and Langston Hughes to The Last Poets. The imagery is so vivid, one feels as if they are right there with him, especially on the night he fell in love with spoken word.
Eyes Free is sensual, seductive and scorching. These "spells" Taalam "Conjures" are no joke. Please take this journey through the eyes of one of the most powerful voices on this planet.
Taalam. Thank you for sharing and showing yourself to the world. In giving so much of yourself, the love you are getting and will continue to receive is but a single drop in an ocean of gratitude for your presence in this here universe. I truly believe and know our ancestors are pleased. Peace*blessings.

Great information!Review Date: 2008-02-09
Terrific new not for profit resource!!!Review Date: 2005-11-19
Things I like about the book:
* Numerous real-life examples which brought the concepts to life
* Good description of the organizational functions: work, management and governance; and fact that all board members required to do governance and some may also need to "change hats" and do work and or management of their organization
* Description of some early warning signals in areas of human resources (eg. CEO turnover); performance (unplanned deficits, rapid depletion of reserve funds); ineffective board meetings; board culture; "rubber-stamping" of CEO recommendations without effective debate
* Solid research on governance models leading to a typology of 9 board types based on primary board focus
* List of 7 primary areas of responsibility that cut across all models:
o establishing/safeguarding mission and planning for the future
o financial stewardship
o human resources stewardship
o performance monitoring and accountability to key stakeholders
o community representation, education and advocacy
o risk management
o managing critical events or transitional phases
* Excellent assessment tools, one I personally utilized with great success
. Strong sections highlighting the board development, management and decision-making processes
Just a few areas which could be enhanced for the 2nd edition: some legal interpretations and information on directors' liabilities (although I know this book is not meant as a primary resource for these topics); and more about the board's role in fundraising and sustainability.
Overall, I think this is truly a great Canadian comprehensive resource on voluntary sector governance, written to be understood by most board members with excellent governance tips and tools. I carry it with me whenever I am delivering governance training workshops! Thanks, Mel!

Governing For Results: A Director's Guide to Good GovernanceReview Date: 2005-04-20
As a governance and board development consultant I will be using Mr. Gill's very readable book to assist my clients in strengthening their organizations. This guidebook covers the seven primary areas of board responsibility and is replete with highly applicable "Case Illustrations" and "Quick Tips". Its final section provides numerous "tools" - such as samples of, and templates for, key policies, financial monitoring, and performance evaluation.
A supplementary CD-ROM is available and I highly recommend acquiring this too. Users should also consider accessing Mr. Gill's online "Governance Self-Assessment Checklist (GSAC) service, available through the author's website.
I don't know of any other resource that "covers all the bases" of good governance - certainly none could be better in providing truly useful and practical guidance for boards in trouble or for boards that are striving to improve their performance.

Dr. Fried and Dr. Edlen-Nezin's freshman foray into the publishing arena leaves nothing desired. The book is a wonderful read, both entertaining and informative throughout. It never drags, and each page opens up new vistas to understanding of how our bodies work, the optimal fuel they need to perform, and how this formula combines to provide mind-blowing pleasures for the body and soul.
You must run, don't walk, to your nearest bookstore and pay the few bucks, you cheapskate, to learn how you too can become the dynamo you've always believed you could be. My friend, you will not be disappointed. Don't believe me? Ask my family doctor. Then ask my girlfriend. They'll back up my enthusiastic claims, and that is no bologna (not recommended for a vital sex life, by the way). Of course, I know that, and you don't. So get the book, and inform thyself.
Happy eating and lovemaking.

I love the fact that Ryan provides the reader with a plethora of real-world examples that a company (such as mine or my client's) can utilize immediately.
In a book world that is so focused on nice-to-know theories, Ryan delivers on what all companies covet--practical advice that can be used the next day. I especially like his demonstrations of metrics, such as return on marketing investments, as this continues to be the holy grail that most companies seek, but very few find the right formula tied to their specific situation.
I will use this book regularly for my company and highly recommend it to my clients.

Public art is always a gift to its community. The type of art that has grown out there, especially in its scale and ambition, often demands substantial gifts from the community to exist. It is a sublime and outrageous feedback loop, the process and product of which have never been as clearly and deeply represented as in this luminous book.
The inner cover photo of a box of matches full of dust and containing not only matches but burnt stubs, cotter pins and a spring, is one of the most complete and lovely images of the spirit of these brave artists I have ever seen. If you can understand that photo you can probably understand the process of making art out there.
Leo Nash certainly does understand the process. By far the most revealing collection of Burning Man photos ever compiled, as close to a portait of the thing as you are likely to see.
