I started this book at 10:30am and finished it at 1pm! Literally could not put it down! The characters were hilarious, the writing was descriptive and this book was the most enjoyable one I've read all summer. Fantastic first book--I can't wait to read more from this author!!

First, let me say that I am NOT an individual who reads for entertainment. My reading is centered around one primary purpose...to gather tidbits of information on a particular subject from various reference books and periodicals.

A friend, who was unaware that I basically only read informational text, kept telling me to read "An Improbable Find". After putting it off for some time, I finally purchased the book and began to read. I quickly became addicted and was totally absorbed in this captivating tale of the quest to find "Mr. Right". Julia, the main character, faces turmoil (well blended with humor) in matters of the heart. There were plenty of "Mr. Wrong's" throughout the book and I found myself wondering "Will she ever find happiness?"

The author has a wonderful feel for both the male and female characters. They come to life and in turn, allow the theater of our imagination to act out emotions and feelings that our daily routine does not allow us to experience so vividly. The material is well presented and the easy to read style will certainly reach out readers of all walks of life.

An Improbable Find kept me in stitches!!!

An Improbable Find is probably the best non-educational book I have read in the past 5 years!! It is an easy adult reader that entertains and allows one to live vicariously through the character Julia. Once I began reading, I was hooked until the last page of the story!! Living in a small town, I can easily understand the troubles of dating after divorce!!! I encourage the author to write a prequel to her "find" and give background of growing up with her family! They seem extremely adventurous and entertaining also!

Some of my favorite childrens' stories revolve around a character called Hank the Cow Dog by John Erickson. They are based on a ranch in Texas, and, though there are human characters in most of the stories, they are predominantly populated and acted out by animals on the ranch and nearby wild animals.

As I was reading J. Lyon Laydon's An Adventure in Yore for Bedtime Reading, I was mentally trying to compare and correlate it to similarly-themed stories. I considered The Chronicles of Narnia and realized they didn't quite match up. I thought about Lewis Carroll's work, and that wasn't exactly it either. The Wind in the Willows came to mind, but I just couldn't make the connection.

Then towards the end of Adventure in Yore, as the tree frogs sang, it hit me. This story has a very similar footing to the Hank the Cow Dog series. Laydon has struck a very viable chord in children's fiction with this short. He runs ahead with activity and then pulls back for night time relaxation. It's a marvelous piece of writing that, to be honest, I didn't think I would care much for. However, I found out differently.

From Terramore to Mudgunkland to the Domain of Felvin and back to Bogland, Laydon has created a legendarium totally suited to the reading imaginations of little folks - probably between ages 4 and 7, if I had to guess.

This is a fun story to get into, it has poetic value in much of its prose. And it imparts a dreamy quality to its overall presentation. I recommend this story highly.

I don't know about you, but since I was a child, I have loved to pretend that birds, frogs and all kinds of animals and insects have their own little world; one we know nothing about. A world where they have families and friends, do their work and play and live their lives; much like we do our own. In this delightful tale by author, J. Lyon Layden, we are taken into such a world, one of frogs, mice, and rats. Ah! what a combination. It seems the rats are on a mission of war and the frogs are determined to stop them at all costs.

We meet some delightful characters and some nasty ones as well. For instance, Dr. Croaks, who sets off to protect the lands of Terramore against the invasion of mice, and treat any possible wounded. We share his adventure as he battles the rats, whom we find out are behind all the terror in the land, and who are very hateful, nasty, and dangerous. Dr. Croaks is captured, nearly killed and finally rescued by a frog, a kind that Dr.Croaks has never seen before; one that is strong, brave and magical. He is taken to a peaceful forest where he dreams mystical dreams and awakens to find himself safely back home among his friends, healing and ready for the next adventure.

I have to say this is truly a fun and adventurous tale. It has great characters that are developed fully where you have a good mind vision of them. The author uses the characters to show loyalty, friendship, compassion, fear, and also hate, as is found in the rats. The story has interesting locals, and a storyline that keeps your interest and leaves you wanting more. Very well done; very enjoyable read for both the young and young at heart.

When I ordered the first set of the Montessori Books I wasn't sure about what I going to get. But being familiar with the Montessori teaching method, I thought I give it a try. My sons love these books and activities. The fact that I can click a particular word and the activity repeats it really helped both my sons. I'm glad I took a chance and will continue with all the levels.

Author's blurb

Review Date: 2006-03-17
This edited volume consists of papers delivered at a conference I organized at the University of Alabama in October 1989, one that was dominated by the excitement (or possibly hype) associated with what was then the relatively new and still strange-sounding term of hypertext. Indeed the self-proclaimed coiner of the term, Ted Nelson, delivered a rambling monologue on how the concept would solve both many of the world's problems (such as organizing and storing global knowledge) and many of his own personal problems, such as being unable to write a coherent essay--the solution to this latter problem was simple: put all your individual thoughts on individual hypercards and let readers organize them as they might. There is a fair amount of editorial intrusion in the volume, in the introduction and conclusion as well as with discussions with the participants following their essays, where my own skepticism seeps through, producing what is arguably a more balanced account, while still reflecting the excitement of an historical moment that most participants felt marked a truly revolutionary change in how we write.

Fantastic and Fascinating Help for teachers
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-26
This is the book for all teachers who love literature and desire to utilize internet resources with their children, but don't have the time to research hundreds of sites on their own. Karen A. Moran has done a thorough job of finding appropriate sites that relate to 38 different children's books. To name a few, the book includes Charlotte's Web, Night of the Twisters, Hatchet, Cricket in Times Square, Indian in the cupboard, Ribsey, Summer of my German Soldier, and The Watson's go to Burmingham - 1963. For each title, the author lists an average of five different web sites that contain a curriculum connection to the book. The activity suggestions range in grade level ability and are both fresh and creative! Included also are other suggested resources, and professional materials.

A must have for any elementary teacher working with books and computers!
