I needed a replacement and couldn't resist the faeries. I figured it would just have a lovely cover, but every page that separates the letters of the alphabet is covered with beautiful artwork depicting faeries. I absolutely love the address book. The pages are also large and each entry slot contains plenty of room for various phone numbers, including mobiles.

Farm Journal Baking Book...A+

I have several Farm Journal cookbooks and they are delightful. This particular book has an really wonderful section on pies...try the basic pie crust! (I have had many a compliment on my pies due to this great crust recipe). Most all of these books have a down-homey kind of feel, with a little comment before each recipe, such as "perfect after a day working hard out of doors." You won't find a much in the way of low fat, low carb or low calorie here...which I'm glad about. Something's got to be sacred! I'm kind of mystified why many of the FJ cookbooks are out of print, as they seemingly all get great reviews. In the meantime, they are fairly easy to find used.

Great for old fashioned baking!

A great cookie recipe book
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-01
This cookie cook book has a wide variety of cookie & bar flavors, textures & complexity of recipe. The recipies are clear & concise. This is now the only cook book I grab to look for a new recipe to try, or to find a recipe with specific ingredient restrictions. There are basic cookie making tips, as well as suggestions of cookies for specific events (e.g. to mail in care packages, for hostest gifts, etc). A wonderful book.

If I only had one cookie cookbook, this would be it!

Whenever I'm looking for a cookie recipe, this cookbook is where I start and eventually end! Whether I'm in the mood for bar, drop, or extra special cookies, the sections are set up so I can always find a choice of recipes. I've had this book for years and haven't found a "bad" recipe yet. It's what I give to people for their first cookie cookbook, because the recipes are easy to understand and there's multiple choices, for instance, of kinds of brownies, or oatmeal cookies, or sugar cookies. Storage and shipping tips are included, but good luck keeping the cookies around long enough to do this!

I grew up with this cookbook. It was one of my Grandmother's "staples" as far as cookbooks went. This and the "Betty Crocker Cookbook" were what I learned with. Recipes in here are tried and true. Sometimes you can update them with a shortcut here or there, but generally they are just right "as is". I would highly recommend it for any cook, beginner or an "old pro".

A Cookbook from back when cookbooks were about taste not style

Somewhere along the way, cooking got away from the simple joy of eating. We fell into Nuevo Cuisine and tiny portions, or recipes where the result looked like it should be framed instead of eaten. This book brings you back to the good old days - when your plate was full and so was your belly. Cooking should be about eating, and this book provides some awesome recipes for that goal.

I absolutely love this cook book! It is my all time favorite. Recipes from pecan pie, to sweetpotatoe pie, to pizza, to chicken pot pie... A pie for every meal! The recipes are simple and so easy to do! I haven't made a pie that I didn't get grave reviews on. A must in every cooks kitchen.

This cookbook is the most complete, yet unpretentious book I have seen in the 40+ years that I have used it. It is easy to use, no hype, no hard to get or expensive ingredients, and every recipie is superlative and time tested. The Maine Chicken Pie recipie and Pecan Pie alone should sell the book. I can't fill the orders I get when making for friends. Every possible type of pie is included. I am ordering out-of-print editions for my children and all my friends.

I find The Fat Tracker to be very useful in my endeavor to keep track of all of the calories I consume on a daily basis. The fast food listings in the calorie and fat list at the back of the book are extremely helpful when I eat out. The check list for the basic food groups helps me plan what I eat daily. I really like the convenient purse size.

Management tips for the gold panning hobbyist
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-31
Reviewed by Richard R. Blake for Reader Views (12/06)

Five men organize a small company to search for gold. Each man invests a small sum of money to get the C.S.O. up and running. Regular board meetings are scheduled to discuss and vote on equipment purchases, planned explorations, and to review the results of their latest outing.

Edward L. Allum, in journal form, has written these delightful stories which follow the paths of the miners of the 1849 gold rush. He details (with maps) the small mining towns in the historical mother lode country of California.

Allum makes fun of his group as they establish a pattern of weekly meeting in the club house, early morning departures, breakfast eateries, casinos, and diners. In detail he tells of the struggles of setting equipment and of panning for the gold. Adventures in Fiddletown, French Camp, Lake Topaz, Bagby, Candy Rock, Colfax, Bear River, and Colombia, each provide unique struggles, and lessons for the team members of the C. S. O.

Allum subtly introduces proven organization and management skills as a part of the C.S.O. board and relates these to their mining adventures. It's also an example of how important this is when faced with trials, and hardship.

In the Annual Report of C.S.O. the following observation is recorded: "Many companies spend hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to motivate and teach their executive management teams, through survival courses, to trust in their team members, knowing they won't let you down. If the C.S.O. finds no other gold, the real gold is in the friendships that have been formed, which will be everlasting."

"The Fiddletown Journal" has given me the yen to study Allum's maps, to fill the gas tank, to visit the small mining towns he has mentioned and to find the restaurants, and shops introduced in the journal.

This is an inspirational and informational book for the history enthusiast and the gold panning hobbyist.

Fiddletown tickled my funny bone and perked up my retired management skills. Oh Yeah! All those skills I had left behind can be applied to a new hobby as did this Author and his friends when they took on GOLD PANNING in California. The detailed research is exceptionally applied in the actually and true maps and techniques for finding the Mother Lode in California.

Those who love history and being a part of walking through it will throughly enjoy this factual book.

Those who desire to start a hobby with friends will learn all the techniques for getting started on a shoestring, using all those management skills you once put in mothballs. It can be applied to any hobby.

I truly enjoyed the adventure of these men. It was a great and inspiring read

I purchased this collector kids guide for the 50 state quarters. It is a complete collection 1999-2008 state quarters. What I liked best about this handbook is that you not only display the quarters attached to each state page, but you learn many fun facts and trivia about the 50 states. There are even some games and puzzles. The problem is being able to purchase more of them...

It is one of the best things I ever got for my children. All of a sudden, they have an interest in geography. They are learning which states are where and in what relation to each other they are. This is a wonderful learning aid disguised as a fun thing.
