insightful view of young woman's life in Civil War south
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-06
This is a compelling diary of a young woman, dedicated to her family and community, who demonstrated great maturity during an extraordinarily difficult time. It shows an interesting side of what life was like for southern woman during and after the Civil War. Pauline was a strong and intelligent woman who had the courage to confront a Union General about a wrong done to her family. It is a remarkable account which gives much insight into the life of a woman - daughter, sister, wife and mother - in the Civil War south. Despite the comment from the reader in Moscow, those who read this book know they must be content with this one, and only, account of the author's life.

This journal is one of the best I've ever had. I love writing, and this one has been my constant companion. I'm on my third one, and it spans the past five years of my life. Beautiful.

I was given a copy of this journal as a high school graduation gift, and it served me well for over a year. It's the first blank book that I have ever filled completely with writing. The pages are lined in blue ink, thick enough so that your favorite pen won't leak through and sturdy enough not to rip even when tossed roughly into the back of your bag and toted around from city to city. I'm a bit of a pack rat, and stuffed flyers, reciepts, ticket stubs and other assorted random papers in there without anything getting lost. The cover will draw longing looks from strangers in coffee shops as you sit in the corner, scribbling your latest inspiration. It's well worth what I paid for it - which was nothing, technically, being a gift and all...

My brother's book...
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-28
I'm not going to misrepresent anything, so I will start by saying that this book is written by my brother. I am not giving it 5 stars because he is my brother - in fact, he wrote another book, "Sex is Not a Four Letter Word", that I would only rate 4 stars (a little to 'professorial' for my taste, Charles). I have used a lot of journals from organizations such as FranklinCovey, Maxwell Leadership and the Leadership Challenge and this one ranks right there in the mix.

It is a perfect mixture of thoughtful insights and writing space. Unlike many journals, there is an opening section that helps set the stage for the journaling adventure which explans how to have success from the inside out - at the core.

If you've used other journals and are ready to go to another level, this one's for you.

If We Could All Learn Core Values!

In the last hundred years, leadership and management training has leaned toward getting higher productivity, yet has ignored character development. Mr. Carpenter goes back to the core values that we should all learn and implement in our lives. After reading this book, I have recommended it to all my business associates and friends. It is a must read for parents who want to teach their children by example. Mr. Carpenter then encourages putting the lessons into practice by allowing you to start journaling your journey toward your goals of eastablishing core values in your life.

great yarn, but don't buy this edition!

Yes, the story is excellent, if I do so say myself, but I don't recommend that anyone buy the iUniverse / Author's Guild edition. The photos didn't hold up well in the reproduction, and instead of "bleeding" off the edge of the paper they're set with a one-inch margin, so what was a 7x10 inch book comes out to magazine size.

Far better to buy a second-hand copy of the New Hampshire Publishing hardcover or softcover editor.

Excellent account of a White Mountains trek
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-25
I own this book in hardcover and I think it is great that it is available again in paperback. The author hikes through the White Mountains of New Hampshire and across into Maine. But more than a journal of his mini-expedition this is a glancing history of the Whites. Excellent! But the politically correct should take heed because the year is 1975 and the author among other things is a (gasp!) cigarette smoker. Let's hope that he has since reformed!

Good photographs taken along the way. Highly recommended.

What an inspiration this book was! Tina Le Marque has inspired me to search my souls deepest crevices for the same spirit this book contains and to transfer it to my own drawing pad. I applaud the author's art and talent as a writer, she had me in tears as well as laughing. After reading this book, I immediately read Tina Le Marque's first book "Warrior Woman" and give it the same applause. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who wants to ignite his or her own hidden creative spirit.

Every time I read the review from Library Journal I just cringe. There's more thorough information available (...), that may enable interested readers to make a more informed choice. Excellent for creative types or those who wish to follow the path of the artist or writer. The book still inspires me!

Lavish Visuals

Review Date: 2002-04-29
Anna Morgan has the eye of a czarina when it comes to creating visual richness. The book is full of marvelous ideas great and small, many of which are quite inexpensive. For example, she suggests saving colored foil candy wrappers to smooth out and use as raw material to decorate the covers of books. Now why didn't I think of that the last time I crumpled and discarded a candy wrapper?

Morgan presents three categories of ideas: ones to use in decorating the covers of books, ones to use in embellishing the interior pages of books, and ones to use in making unusual books themselves. It has very clear instructions for all the projects, and has many detailed photographs and drawings. Very useful are variations on each idea, so you can see examples of how she takes her concept and reapplies it to make it look totally different.

If this book has a fault, it is that papermaking and bookbinding, both of which are described in the book, might each be the subject of detailed treatises much longer than this volume. No matter, this book is an inspiration.

So Many Projects, So Little Time

I'm so inspired by this book, that I can hardly wait to get home from vacation so I can pull out my craft supplies. One project is a vacation journal with a cover sprinkled with sand and sea shells. It's beautiful.
She shows a variety of designs and techniques like weaving torn paper, using embossing liquid, and making your own special papers (one uses corn silks). I like the examples using lace to frame an old photo, and ways to dress up ordinary books (a standard visitor's book and a ring binder). These are great for personal use or make very special gifts.

Crossing the Color Line is a superbly presented collection of stories by Alice Adams, Toni Bambara, and others examine the truth about the color line between blacks and whites, using contemporary stories by novelists to explore the issues and problems. The stories which comprise Crossing The Color Line provide insights more charged than debates and probe issues of politics, class, gender and religion alike.

Highly recommended reading probing issues of race.

Jan Yoors was the son of a Flemish stained glass artist. At a young age he ran away with a troupe of Gypsies (more properly, the Rom) who were camping in his Belgian home town. Yoor's parents amazingly accepted his new double life, as Yoors lived on and off with the Rom for many years. His life with his Rom family is covered in his first book "The Gypsies." (which is another must-read.)

"The Gypsies" ends as WWII sweeps over Europe and catches the Rom in its poisoned grasp. Yoors then became an agent of La Resistance, and this book tells, in spare language and deep feeling, what happened to Yoors and his adopted family of Rom. Some of it was so horrific that Yoors can only allude to the events, and his emotions are so deep that we only learn a tiny bit of what must have happened to many of his beloved Rom family. The insight into the deep dedication of the Resistance leaders and fighters is unique.

Do read this book. It is so utterly wonderful that I pass copies of it out to many friends.

Inspired Creativity

Are you inspired by the beauty of book covers? The picture here truly does this book justice. When it arrives, the colors are slightly less purple (see scanned picture) and a little more rose and blue, but still inspiring with a mother-of-pearl glossy sheen and silvery iridescent highlights. Unique features include a memento pouch, like an envelope at the back of the book. The pages are also acid-free.

There is a ribbon page marker, but also an elastic band the keep the book closed. This helps to keep the pages safe if you like to carry a book around in your pocket or purse. I can think of many uses for this book including collecting poetry, quotes or writing your most intriguing thoughts.

I'll be using this book to collect essential oil recipes for the bath. I like collecting oils and then figuring out which scents I like best. This is a perfect book with 176 pages that will give me plenty of room to write recipes for perfumes and bath products. Now I have to find a pen worthy of writing in this beautiful book...

Beautiful little notebook
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-28
I purchased this notebook and a Moleskine pocket sized notebook on the same day (I purchased the Moleskine first and found this one later in the day). The Paperblank mini is the same size as the Moleskine but has about 20 less pages, the leaves are slightly thicker, and the lines on each page are slightly wider. Otherwise, the features are the same: They both have a momento pocket and an elastic band to keep the books closed.

The biggest difference, however, is that this book is beautiful to the senses. It is beautiful to the touch as well as to the sight. The picture doesn't do it justice. The design on the front cover is an embossed detail of the design on the spine and the back cover. The Moleskine cover, in spite of the hype, feels like vinyl (which I believe it is).

It is a joy to keep a record of my days in this little book.
