This book was just what my son needed. After what seemed liked hundreds of little papers, my son can finally keep track of his friends. This is something he needed and enjoys doing! This is the birthday gift for each friend this year!

A Valuable Companion to The Joy of Cooking

I bought this book in 1970 and have used it at least once a week ever since then. Just this weekend we made a trip to the North Carolina State Farmer's Market and I came home and started cooking the wonderful fresh vegetables we bought. Whether you like to use only fresh vegetables or have only canned vegetables at your disposal, this book is full of good recipes for you. My copy is falling apart, I've used it so much. With today's emphasis on healthy eating and making sure we have at least 5 fruits and vegetables on our plate, this book is invaluable. I'm currently looking for a good used copy for a friend whose kids have all declared themselves vegetarians. She needs this book, but I won't give up my copy!

I received this book as a wedding present in 1968. It became a family favorite for soups - especially the beef-vegetable. There isn't a vegetable recipe in this book that is a flop. Arranged by vegetables alphabetically, this book is an excellent resource for new cooks. It is not, however, low fat! Not much was in 1968! I loaned it to a friend and never got it back which is why I'm having to reorder it now. I truly don't to be without it.

Witty, weird, intelligent essays abound in Sparrow's great homage to all things that interest him. From detailed sexual escapades ("My Sex with an Ant") to in-depth interviews with great political figures ("Interview with Saddam Hussein!!!!"), Sparrow's blunt, innocent, learned humor is refreshing, awakening, and pungent in my mind.

What was it really like to be a soldier in the Civil War?
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-11-25
Military historian/author Hans Halberstadt's "The American Civil War: The Soldier's Story" is much more than just another book about America's bloodiest and most tragic war. He has written an indispensable primer for helping all generations of lay readers explore and appreciate the life of the common soldier in both battle and camp. Whereas most nonfiction Civil War tomes focus on grand strategy, battle analysis, or celebrated leaders, Mr. Halberstadt takes us right down to the fighting man's level for vivid, and sometimes gut-wrenching, insights into the day-to-day lives of "Johnny Reb" and "Billy Yank." As his thesis, Halberstadt contends that "The common soldier...outnumbered the famous senior commanders about a hundred thousand to one, yet we don't hear as much as we might about their military skills, their fieldcraft, and their lives in and out of battle." The author sets out to cure that oversight by educating us with a wealth of fascinating information about the common soldier's training, weapons, uniform, food, camp life, and battle tactics. To keep the subject manageable, he further divides the book into separate sections dealing with the foot soldiers, cavalry troops, and artillerymen.

Although a few Civil War purists may take umbrage with the technique, Mr. Halberstadt successfully blends period photographs with dozens of stunning reenactment photos, all expertly crafted and woven into a lively text attempting to answer the following question: What was it really like to be a soldier in the Civil War? For my money, Halberstadt is the first author since Civil War veteran Sam Watkins wrote "Co. Aythc" to capture the essence of the wartime experience for the rank-and-file soldier.

"The American Civil War" is a fantastic reading experience. Rich in detail, eloquently written, and beautifully illustrated, it gives readers a "you are there" perspective on Army life, North and South, in America's bloodiest conflict. For anyone who wants to understand the Civil War, Mr. Halberstadt's book is required reading. It is a central work in my Civil War library.

Wilhelm Reich was many things in his lifetime- a student of Freud, a political activist, a research scientist, and an inventor. His work was decades ahead of its time and is finally being rediscovered and reevaluated by the public. If, like me, you are interested in Reich and his work, you might want to check out a novel called We All Fall Down, by Brian Caldwell. it draws heavily on Reich's theories, particularly Listen Little Man and The Mass Psychology Of Facism. It's a great introduction to Reich's work and the entire novel draws heavily on his theory. It's very interesting watching an author explore his theories in a fictional setting. Well worth reading.

A must-read for anyone interested in Reich's personality

American Odyssey is a lush garden filled with the innermost thoughts of Wilhelm Reich during the period he was establishing himself in America in the 1940's. He will have you smiling one moment and welling up with tears the next as you follow him through the maze of his lifework that evidences his being one of humanity's most creative and harrassed thinkers. Reich's concepts are certainly in line with free-thought today. His legacy of leaving his archives to the "children of the future," since they alone would most likely be the ones to understand and accept what he discovered, is falling nicely into place - exactly as Reich knew it would.

Emma Goldman's magazine Mother Earth was one of the best and liveliest anarchist publications at the beginning of the 20th Century, but until this book was published almost everything which ever appeared in Mother Earth was nearly impossible to find. Peter Glassgold has done a fine job of culling some of the best works from the 5,000 or so pages of Mother Earth into this generous and fascinating collection.

The book is separated into six sections: Anarchism, The Woman Question, Literature, Civil Liberties, The Social War, and War and Peace. Within these sections are articles by classic anarchist writers such as Alexander Berkman, Ben Reitman, Voltairine de Cleyre, Peter Kropotkin, and Goldman herself. There are also a number of works by writers you might not expect to appear in such a book: Eugene O'Neill (what is suspected to be his first publication), Ben Hecht, Louise Bryant, Margaret Sanger, and Maxim Gorky. Peter Glassgold provides an informative and readable introduction, and there is a comprehensive index as well as a section of photographs, mostly of the covers of issues of Mother Earth (some by Man Ray).

Everyone interested in the history of anarchism, radical politics, and 20th-century thought should own this book.

The Greatness is in the Simplicity
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-18
Andy Warhol remains a true Icon of the art world. His famous '15 minutes of fame' was a terrific statement, but in Warhol's case his words and his art linger on in museum retrospectives, in art history studies, and in books on photography, fine print making, and art whether drawn, painted, of screened.

This little book is a treasure. From the opening apropos statement by Alan Cumming, the book is devoted to over 250 works of art by Warhol. His line drawings for the most part are undecorated even with cross-hatching: the single continuous line defines the faces, the bodies, the genitalia, the feet, the lips of his models. These are finely reproduced on several different tones of paper, each a full-page bleed. Then along with little quips from his feisty, shy, and sage mouth are his photographs of men including some self-portraits, some of transsexual friends, some of just beautiful male bodies, some of famous men from history. These photographs are at times followed or paired with the subsequent now famous silkscreen interpretations. Some collages and other experiments with imagery complete the set.

By this time most people including the harshest critics have the consensual opinion that Andy Warhol was a significant figure in American art history. This fine book, very beautifully designed by Azi Rad, is a substantial volume of tribute to the simplicity of Warhol's genius. It belongs in the library of every art collector and everyone who appreciates the male form - especially as much as Warhol obviously did! Highly Recommended.

A Really Exquisite Book!

What a great little book of delights! Here is a really beautiful collection of art by Andy Warhol, many of the works apparently published for the first time. There are color photographs here of men's body parts-- chests, feet, butts, etc.-- a series of color portraits of drag queens labelled "Ladies and Gentlemen", photographs of a few celebrities including Mick Jagger and the artist himself eating a banana. But most of the book is taken up by beautiful line drawings of men-- figures, faces, body parts, even the feet of Christopher Isherwood. Alan Cumming in right on the money in his foreward: "just a simple collection of lines on paper that magically produce a sense memory of something so visceral it can actually arouse." And Mr. Warhol had this thing about body hair! This is a very erotic collection beautifully produced that you will go back to again and again.

I love the short and inspirational verses in this book. I met a friend of the author who shared it with me and am glad to see that I can buy a copy of my own. It is one of my favorite books to read and uplift my spirit. It is a wonderful book to buy as a gift or to keep somewhere for everyone to read.

These are some of the wisest verses I have ever read anywhere. They really make you think about life and look at yourself and relationships in a more postive and loving way. She put into words feelings and ideas I have wondered about over the years and helped me see them more clearly.

I just hope she writes MORE! I also love the calligraphy.

A book definitely touched by angels!!!
