Tracing the progression of images of women's bodies through nearly two centuries of literature, Fasick analyzes selected novels from Samuel Richardson to D. H. Lawrence to construct a historical overview of class and gender relations as reflected and refracted in the pages of the English novel. Though recent discussion and women's roles in literature and culture has centered on women's sexuality as the defining factor in the female character, Fasick focuses instead on ways that writers have depicted women as possessing nurturing qualities that distinguish them from men. Rigid adherence to this idealization of femininity constructs a standard difficult for women to achieve. Held to the ideal, Fasick asserts, women appear grossly culpable rather than simply human. Fasick begins with an analysis of Samuel Richardson's novels that examines three linked themes: sensibility, maternity, and anorexia. She continues with a discussion of Frances Burney's treatment of the expressive female body. She then analyzes novels by Charles Dickens, William Makepeace Thackeray, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Charlotte Bronte in light of Victorian attitudes toward women and food and toward female invalidism. In conclusion, she returns to Richardson, pairing his novel Pamela with Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover for an examination of cross-class romance and the resulting implications for class and gender. Throughout, references to conduct books and periodical literature of the time provide contexts that illuminate the primary texts. Fasick's insights will interest students of the novel, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century fiction, women's studies and gender studies, and class relations in literature.

Timeless wisdom as applicable today as when it was at the time it was written. The lessons continually unfold each time I listen to one of the CDs. I spent a long time looking for an inspiring teaching on Leadership. None of the other books seemed to be what I was looking for...nothing seemed to grasp the full scope or "wholeness" of Leadership like these CDs.

Without doubt one of the best distillations of the practical wisdom of Chan Buddhism I've encountered. Better even than reading the excellent Shambala book editions of the same works. Oral transmission in the best Zen tradition. Use them as a meditation on long runs.

My husband and I were having serious troubles in our marrage. I had decided to get away and go to India, where I met the author of this book. He loaned me a copy and I read it. I was hooked, the begining is so good I couldn't put it down. The thing I especially liked about this book was that a man could be so in touch with his feelings. Any woman could have wrote this book, but I like that it shows men its ok to feel. I was feeling like the problem was all my husbands fault but Henry's book made me look at my part in it too. When I came home I made my husband read the book as part of our healing. He also couldn't put it down which is a real compliment since I have only known of him reading 3 books sinces we met 26 years ago. I have since started recomending it to friends and clients with marital problems.
This is more than just another book about relationships.

In thirty years of marraige I have read many books about relationships; many of them good, but The Way of Marriage continues to be a favorite. It is not just another book about relationships. It is a profoundly insightful guide to spiritual growth. The author's subtle humor and his willingness to share his personal experiences make this a most enjoyable read as well as being enlightening. I have always felt that life gives us many clues everyday - that's what makes it fun. But I must admit that there have been many days when I thought to myself "God, would you PLEASE just spell it out for me....obviously I'm just not getting it!" The Way of Marriage spells it out for me. It is sort of a decoder ring for the clues, hints, hidden messages in life's challenges
An outstanding, insightful, powerful work

THE WAY OF MARRIAGE is a gem, worthy of being read by adults, in, out of, or between marriages--or contemplating any commited relationship. It contains the author's insightful and evocative personal experiences in coming to grips with the challenges of his marriage partnership. Mr.Borys is willing in this remarkable and useful work to lay raw his emotions, feelings, and inner life--and come to a more complete understanding of himself, and perforce his marriage and, indeed, of all relationships. The book is vastly larger than just a marriage or relationship manual. It is a highly personal story, a work replete with helpful thoughts, suggestions, and experiences. I can unequivocally recomment this work, and I look forward to more from this talented and courageous author

My sister has been dealing with diabetes for several years now, so I bought her this book, hoping it might help. Well, it sure did! Before, she was so frustrated, because keeping track of her info was a real struggle. But now, with this WeeklyTrack book, her glucose readings have improved because she is managing her diet much better. She said it has helped her to figure out which times of day it is better to eat certain foods, and when is the best time to take her daily walk. Her doctor has been able to help her more, because he can look at the book and see how she's doing in between visits. We recommend this book for all diabetics!
By the way, if you are a family or professional caregiver, you might also want to look at Daily CareLog (The Complete Caregiving Diary), a caregiving log book by this same publisher.

I would highly recommend this journal for anyone who has Diabeties. Recently I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabeties. I had a little log book keeping track of my sugar level that came with my Glucose monitor and I also had a notebook keeping track of my food as well as any other information I needed to write down. This Weekly Journal is awesome. It keeps track of your sugar, your food intake as well as your exercise routine. It also has room to add any additional notes. Its a 52 Week Journal, everything you need in one place. In the back of the book, you have information you can store for yourself which include dates of any medical procedures such as your A1C test that way you can keep track of these things yourself. I would highly recommend this journal to anyone who has Type 2 Diabeties. Its easy, user friendly and a "must have" for all new patients.

When Lifescan -- the manufacturer of my blood glucose meter -- stopped printing their free log books, they recommended that I try this one.
They were right: the format is so clear and easy to use. The way the pages are set up naturally flows with how a diabetic has to keep notes and test throughout the day. The colors and symbols used in the daily charts look cheerful and take a lot of the drudgery out of my daily record-keeping. Plus, the special sections for eyes, teeth, and feet have me paying better attention to my whole diabetes care. This is a quality log book -- well worth the price -- and I would not hesitate to recommend it other people with diabetes!

exposes New Age moralism

I found this book to be one of, if not *the* best book I have ever read on the subject of illness. Susan Griffin writes from experience, and yet manages to write an objective, thoughtful book on illness and what it means to society. Although New Age prides itself in having escaped the restrictive judgments of past centuries, and mind/body philosophies and metaphysics portray themselves as more enlightened, Susan exposes the underlying hypothesis for what it is--the same old moralism: "If you think the right thoughts, you won't be ill." "You are ill because there is something for you to learn." We still want to believe, she points out, that we are greater than Nature, that we are in control. Yet, anyone who has had a chronic or severe illness knows how very little control we do have. Perhaps, after all, New Age is just another way of dealing with the knowledge that someday, no matter how good we are, we all will suffer and die.
Thank You, Susan Griffin!

As a sufferer of CIFIDS, I found it wonderful to read about someone else's experiences with the disease, and to know that the things I experience are not in my head, after all. Griffin's book brought tears to my eyes more than once, as her comparison of her experiences to those of Marie Duplessis is both beautiful and painful. This book had a powerful effect on me, one that I can't really put in words. All I can say is: Thank You!
Invisible Illness not so invisible to the bearer

This is one of the most eloquent books I have read on the subject of chronic illness, in particular chronic illness which is not easily identified: "invisible illness, Susan calls it. She writes with authority because she has walked in those shoes. When standing in line and feeling totally exhausted because of her illness, another woman is wheeled to the front of the line in a wheelchair. Thus the perfect illustration of the difficulty. She uses the classic Dumas novel "Camille" to illustrate the status of the sufferer, and the reaction of those surrounding her. This is a book of perspective, and one that should be read by anyone in the caring professions, and anyone with a loved one who has an "invisible" illness.

I believe that this is a very thorough dog journal. It has sections where you answer questions about your dog's personality and characteristics as well as how you as a owner feel about your dog. For example: puppies first day home, puppy growth chart, birthdays, holidays, vacations, Your dog is most annoying when..., training, bravest moments and much more. There are tons of sections for pictures and even little folders to hold pictures until you are ready to post them. My favorite part is the sections where it allows you to write 10 things that can be learned from a dog, 10 ways having a dog improved my life, and 10 things I would change about dogs if I could. This book is for those who want to keep records of their dog's growth as well as the memories they share with their dogs plus more. If you consider your dog a part of the family, then you will love this book.

This book was just what I was looking for. It has tons of space for photos, several sections where you answer questions about your pet such as his favortie toy, favorite vacation memories, etc. It places some emphasis on his life as a puppy, but there are additional sections that cater to the older dog's experiences. There is also a section where one can keep an immunization record, vet phone numbers, etc.

This book helped me discover my hidden talent of observation. Though I'd like to say I draw well, it's not exactly true. But thanks to this book, I've been able to refine my drawing skills and better capture the details that catch my eye and are so hard to explain. Being able to communicate the details on paper is fulfilling in a whole new sense!

This wonderfully illustrated book is truly an adventure in the love of nature and all its creatures. The author presents an easy-to-understand approach to journal sketching through the seasons by providing the steps that help you draw what you see and feel. The sketches are based on favorite natural areas in Boulder CO but the drawing techniques are universal and can be used by the young-at-heart from 5 to 95. This delightful book will even encourage the non-artist to pick up a pencil and start sketching and will greatly enhance the way one see's and responds to nature.

This is a great book for people who think they have to be Rembrandt to keep an artistic journal. The author does a great job teaching beginers not to stress about making perfect sketches. The lively fun text puts emphasis on observation and just getting out there and doing it. This would make a great book for schools.

The answer to the question sophisticatedly raised by this little anthology, is given in the essay which opens the collection. The basic reason lies in forming a personal scale of values that help you individualize the real artistic elements in new works. The second one is that reading increases the quality of living in usual and unusual situations, as well. But the quality of school anthologies and their presentations is still an open problem.
