The perfect little sketchbook

As a graphic design major, I'm required to keep sketchbooks for both my design and fine arts courses, but I find the traditional black cover and huge blank pages intimidating when I want to explore some of my own thoughts, not just assigned projects. They also leave me feeling exposed - some part of my brain refuses to believe that I won't have to turn them in for a grade and therefore reveal all of my personal writings and ideas to someone who hardly knows the real me.
That's why I was so excited when I found this little notebook. I wasn't even looking for one, but when I saw the colorful cover and the whimsical illustration and type, I was drawn to it. When I looked inside, I was further delighted by the variety of blank pages - some are college-ruled and some are blank, while there are others with a rectangular grid. Some have a 7-inch ruler at the side, and they all have random little illustrations at the bottom of the page. There's also a little flip-book action going on with the frog illustration at the right side of the pages - it's really cute. Along with the visual intrigue is some textual intrigue, as well; at the top of each page are three words, such as "knitting bird hospital" or "ant searching blue". These are just another entertaining detail, and I'm sure they could produce some interesting word association exercises.
Because of the way the journal is bound, there are some creasing issues when you stretch open the book, but I find that it's actually nice to have a sketchbook that isn't so perfect and imposing all of the time - the wear and tear just increases its charm. There are also two elastic loops on the side to hold a pencil or pen so that you're never left scrambling for a writing utensil when that next great idea hits. I prefer using a mechanical pencil because it can hook over one of the loops and stay there. The elastic band that keeps the book closed gives me a great sense of security and privacy, which are so important to the creative process.
Overall, I'm delighted with this little notebook and I'm so glad I found it in the clearance section at the local bookstore. If you're an artist or a writer, or perhaps just someone who likes to doodle, this is a wonderful notebook for you. Love it!

This notebook is great. I initially picked it up as journal potential. Turns out the layout and designs on each page inspired my creativity. I now use it for poetry, drawings, and any other silly nonsense I feel like jotting down. Small enough to carry around with you and even has a pencil holder so you're never without a place to jot down your ideas. Great for any age.

This log is great. It's printed on quality paper.Very easy to use.The catagories in the log are everything the average boater needs. We log every outing in detail. It's also got a section for fuel purchases and "things to do before next outing". Very useful and lots of fun.We highly recommend it!
Excellent, a must for any recreational boater.

This boat log is the best I've ever found. It contains all the catagories the average recreational boater would ever need. Yet it so simple and easy to use. It's a great way to keep track of your boating adventures as well as some practical things like service records, fuel purchases, and general boating tips.I've used lots of other boat logs over the years and this one is by far the best.I can't imagine boating without it.

Finally someone comes out with a fitness JOURNAL!

A friend who I work out with referred the Body Mechanics Fitness Journal to me for use in tracking the progress of my workouts. Having tried several times to keep track on my own - I am ECSTATIC that someone came up with the idea to publish a journal specifically for the purpose of tracking this type of information!
Having this journal has made me more accountable in staying true to my workout schedule, and whats more it's been fun to monitor and see my strength improve as I log my results for each workout. It's only in the past year that I have begun to stick to a fitness regimen, and I found that the information provided in Body Mechanics along with the easy to follow layout of the charts/grids used for logging numbers to be helpful even to a beginner like myself. I have never had a book prove to be so effective that I felt the need to post a review about it, but Body Mechanics deserves kudos.

Finally, a book that makes sense of how your body reacts to exercise and fitness, and is written & illustrated in a very refreshing way. I have been working out for years, with and without trainers, with and without guides, and have gotten into a rut with the fitness industry. It's getting boring. Body Mechanics has brought new wind to the sails of exercise. It is an explanation of how the body 'thinks' and reacts, and is written to keep your attention. It is also a small spiral bound six month guide that is designed for your workout bag. You can take it all with you. It targets a properly designed workout program and the one common denominator in today's health clubs - you. Most of all it is very enjoyable to read, is illustrated beautifully, has charts that work, and has brought fun and results back into the picture. I'm very glad I got it.

The Book of Martyrdom and Artifice: First Journals and Poems 1937-1952 is edited by Bill Morgan and Juanita Lieberman-Plimpton and offers a rare view of the poet during his formative years rather than the more commonly covered later life works. As such, this will serve as a fitting and important introduction for both college-level and casual Ginsberg enthusiasts, surveying the contents of candid journals allowed to see publication only after his death, and including conversations with Jack Kerouac and other notable contemporaries. In packing in elements of his personal life and family relationships, succeeds in displaying many hitherto-unrevealed aspects of Ginsberg's life and personality - essential keys for a through, in-depth understanding of his writings.

Ginsberg was perhaps the defining person of the Beat Generation. Technically I suppose that to be a true member of the beat generation club you had to be a personal friend of Ginsberg (although he never claimed to be the leader). It's also possible that being friends of some other members of the cordon of friends around him might count as well. Or, who knows, perhaps it could be anyone who shares the philosophy.
Anyway, this book might be called the early years of a Beat Generation Poet. It consists of journal entries from his early years, along with about 100 poems, some 65 of which have never been published. The entries are varied in subject, they reflect his thinking at the time. They are also a look inside a persons head that we don't often get to see. They describe the time he spent in psychiatric hospitals, his earliest homosexual feelings, the mental illness of his mother, and the early seeking of a religious home.
This is not a biography, it is the writings of the man himself, intended for publication only after his death.

I wish I could have written like that when I was 11. I wish I could write like that now. Fascinating on many levels, from the literary to the prurient.
My copy is bound starting with the last page of the index, page five hundred and something, going backward. I tried to find some clue if that was the way it was intended, or if my copy is a rare (e-bay worthy) fluke. So far, I have found no answer within the book itself, although I am not by any means finished. Does anyone know? Is that the zen like pranksterish way its supposed to be, or did someone at DaCapo screw up?
NOTE: After much painstaking research, I have been able to discover that MY copy of the book was bound on the wrong side, and that ALL the OTHERS are bound the right way. So I'm going to shrink wrap it and sell it on e-bay in 50 years for millions of yuan.

WOW! An amazing insightful book that one can simply wander through on their own path to self-awareness and self-actualization. I was exposed to my first of Carol Knight's books when I took a class through my church about 15 or so years ago, and everything I've seen her write to date is wonderful, insightful, and hopefully Oprah will catch onto this incredibly lovely woman's books for her book list. IMHO this outta be on the top 10! Her journals are wonderful and we can all see ourselves and parts of ourselves in the insights along this path we call life! I hope to see more from this wonderful soul who I am proud to call a true friend as well! God is amazing and so is this wonderful soul, Carol Bell Knight. We love you! :)

Carol Knight's book is not about "how-to-journal," rather it is one of the finest example of what an inspired and insightful journal could be. Reading her random chosen pages brings realization to the depth and beauty possible from conscious reflection of our daily life and spiritual path.
This book can be enjoyed reading it from cover to cover, or by opening to any section and delighting in the pages found. I am inspired by the combinations of reflection, and poems. This book is not only a glimps into someone else's growth and enlightenment (I always enjoyed sneaking a peak at my sister's diary when I was little), this book also serves as a way to examine the value of one's own personal sense of being.
The C.K. Journals is also full of fantastic quotes by other authors. I've compiled a list of other authors I want to read as a result of the multitude of wonderful quotes and literary discussions in this book.

Objectively, I can tell you that these are well made cards with sharp, clear printing. They're a good size and on stock of a nice weight...
I can recommend this set for anyone who wants to send a nice note or, as I did, give a thoughtful gift.

I have used this little booklet for the past 6 months to keep my illness "in check". I am on so many medications- they have side effects and interations with other meds and foods, and even heat and light. Stress level, lack of sleep, and qualilty of my diet have a big impact on my quality of life as I live with this illness. It's a lot to keep track of. I have found this to be so effective and so simple to use. Because of the severity of my symptoms and side effects, I use one page for the morning and one for into the night. For me this has been an easy way to see trends and ward off problems before they occur. I highly recommend this to anyone who has any type of chronic illness, or who is wanting to chart symptoms to report to their doctor to help to make a diagnosis.

It helps take the stress out of doing cards, enabling me to keep track of those received and those sent. I want another one as soon as it's available!

This is the best "low-tech" solution to maintaining a record of sent and received Christmas Cards, including addresses, and space to record 12 years of history. This item is out of print, but a similar (maybe a later printing) is available on Miles Kimball web site for $9.99 + 3.99 shipping. Better than buying the 19989/90 version for $75+ from a used book store.

I have owned and used this same book since 1982. I ran out of room several years ago and have searched ever since. There is more than enough room to add names and addresses and the paper makes them easily changed. There is a space to record those cards which you send and also for those that you receive. It is very well put together as mine has taken a beating over the years. The size also makes it very handy. It is about 5 inches by 7 inches and therefore fits into most Christmas card boxes making it easy to keep it handy when writing cards. Anyone who likes to keep track of cards from year to the next will appreciate it.

Not even a "man of God" can watch his very much loved mother (who was once very much in charge of her life) slip off into this very cruel disease without a sense of loss and heartache, but Houston was able to see the benefit of sharing his mother's life at this time, as well. There's a lot of love and compassion here, along with the frustration and sadness. This book should be on the shelf of every adult child who finds himself in this "role-reversal" situation with an aged parent.

The book touched me with its honest and thoughtful reflection of the joyful challenges of caring for an aged parent slipping into another reality. Houston shares his frustrations, his coping or lack of it, and his small victories in a honest yet upbeat and faithful way. Anyone coping with taking care of an aged parent who is slipping away slowly will find an encouraging friend in this book.

I've known the author through many of the years covered in the book. Reading his journal of those experience gave me the feeling of returning home again, seeing familiar landmarks and sharing joint memories. That feeling reverberates as I watch my parents go through many of the same experiences witht their parents. Circle of Years should find a similar home of warmth in the hearts of other readers facing the aging of their parents or grandparents.

Rich Ryall has done a marvelous job recounting the experience of a true baseball fan through a Season, Penant Race, and World Series. I could feel the anxieties, the frustrations, and the elations that such a fan experiences, but more importantly, Ryall has the ability to make every reader understand a fan's love of the game. He has a charming and intelligent wit that all will enjoy, baseball fan or not.
A book for any baseball fan!

A Classic Fall is a great read for any fan of baseball. Well written, very funny, and you will see shades of yourself in many of the moments Rich describes in his book as he follows the Giants pennant race and post-season journey of the 2002 season.
I can't recommend it enough.

It is obvious that the author of A Classic Fall, Rich Ryall, is a true baseball fan. What began as a running series of weekly articles on the SF Giants and their trials and tribulations, posted on his website, evolved into a lyrical tribute to his team. The ups and downs, laughter and occasional pathos of the Giants, as they found their stride and made their way through the playoffs and World Series. Rich's observations capture the atmosphere of the ballpark; the excitement of the pennant race and Series. Whether you are a Giants fan in particular, or a baseball fan in general, A Classic Fall is certainly a moving and wonderful tribute to the Great American Game. A 5-Star Read, without question!!!
