This is a great resource for editors/proofreaders/medical writers, especially since the style varies so much from the usual MLA and AP styles. Mine is tagged up and sits on my desk, at the ready, as I proofread and edit.

At long last, the 10th Edition of the AMA Manual of Style is finally available, and I am happy to say it was worth the wait. As an editor who has worked in medical journals, scientific Web sites, and an agency specializing in pharmaceutical advertising, I found the 9th edition to be, at times, a bit dated and not as easy to navigate as I would have hoped. Most of those problems have been resolved in the 10th edition, as well as the inclusion of some new information that I didn't even know I was missing until I found.
The following is a list of changes in the new edition of the style guide that I found particularly helpful and relevant, and will hopefully be a quick go-to guide when you're debating whether to buy the new version or hold fast to the 9th edition.
- The section on Correct and Preferred Usage has moved from Chapter 9 to Chapter 11 and includes a wealth of information that was not in the previous edition. There is more information about the difference between race and ethnicity and when it's relevant to include sexual orientation in a scientific manuscript.
- An extended section on electronic references (3.15, 63-72). This new info is highly relevant considering since 1998 (when the 9th edition was released) there have been a number of innovations with the Internet and a number of authors choose to use the Web as sources of information.
- The section on manuscript preparation is vastly improved and expanded (Ch 4). It includes more information on the different types of tables and figures as well as new guidelines for the use of symbols and footnotes.
- Of particular interest to journal editors, there is more information on authorship requirements, conflicts of interest, sources of funding, and copyright and permissions basics (Ch 5).
- The section on capitalization demonstrates that, not only can the AMA editors laugh at themselves, but that they're also familiar with the lyrics of Coolio (eg, There is no party like a West Coast party because a West Coast party doesn't stop. 10.3, 375). The section on capitalization also includes newer terms like iBook and eBay that are more relevant to modern writing (10.8, 380).
- In terms of grammar, some of the rules that always give editors trouble are more explicitly outlined and in more detail. There's a longer section on the use of that and which (7.2, 318), which I still have to look up occasionally. A final ruling on the health care vs healthcare debate (always 2 words, per AMA, 11.1, 395). And more specific rules on false/parenthetical plurals and sentences with compound subjects (7.8)
- A change in the use of states in references. All will use postal codes now, instead of the former abbreviations (14.5, 451-455).
- An expanded section on international currency (18.5.12, 817-819).
- The section on terminology has been expanded to include information about different specialties, including psychiatry, ophthalmology, and obstetrics (Ch 15). This section also includes a new chart with human viruses that is expanded and easier to navigate (15.14.3, 762-767).
- There is a more comprehensive copyediting section, including information on editing numerical information (21.1, 907; 23.1, 929-933).
- And finally, and most importantly for all newer medical editors and writing, there is a more informative resources guide with professional organizations aimed at scientific writers and editors as well as grammar and editing resources (25, 967-976).
As a whole, I'm very pleased with the new edition of the AMA style guide, and can't wait to incorporate the new changes into my own work.

this book has value beyond furnishing tidbits for Camus scholars, providing his take on North and South America, notably New York City and cities of Brazil, along with Buenos Aires and Santiago. He seems to have met only a few people he liked, and maybe two or three sites impressed him. He reflects on suicide. No it is not a cheerful work, but it is vivid. Hard to imagine this was the tour of a man at his most successful. For Americans, this work if valuable for he describes our homeland; if you have read the major works, this is worth a gander.

This book is a peek into how Camus really feels about The United States and South America, when he was here. He was also very specific, right down to what he did in the morning, how he prepared for each day, what he said to his fellow passengers, as well as how many people snored in his train cabin. I suggest this to anyone who is interested in Camus, as well as to anyone who enjoys reading a diary-style novel.
A Treasure for American Camus-philes

Educated Americans share a self-consciousness, a painful awareness that we descendants of mere colonists are probably at best nouveau-riche; in short, that we are not Europeans. Indeed, we struggle to hide our secret gratitude when a European friend--particularly a Frenchman--even shows interest in us. Thus it is a great joy to open these pages and find that one of the greatest products of French letters took the time to set down his thoughts about us and our country. Camus wrote these notes during a lecture tour to this country while he was in his thirties, a time when he was first coming to international attention and when he was deep in preparation of some of his most important literary works. Camus reveals a critical but endearingly tender fascination with our country, with its often crass culture, with its sometimes seemingly naive optimism, and with its lack of awareness of its own inestimable riches. At the same time, serious students of his work will discover the first inklings of insights and ideas that would work their way into his major writings.
Camus kept an extensive literary journal during his life, a very large portion of which (including this small piece) is available in English translation. His journal is deeply insightful and often tender and personal, but written in an elegant and well organized narrative (suggesting his anticipation that his journal would someday be read by the masses). Anyone who loves Camus will be interested in this book, and any American Camus-phile will be enraptured and gratified by it.

I purchased one of these journals 10 years ago (in a different color), and I've long since filled it up and moved on. I recently purchased a new one in this color (they apparently no longer offer the tan color I liked better). This one's more dark red/rust than it is burgundy. Since there's no content in this book, I'll comment on it's "feel." It's a good size for travel or storage in a briefcase or handbag, as are most of the ones listed under "blank books" as subject words. The cover is not soft; rather, it's kind of like a football, if you've ever held one. Hard, but slightly giving, with a rough or pebbled but not unpleasant texture to it. The lines are well spaced and there's no "frilly" art/design on the pages, so it's equally suited for a man or a woman. It's undated, so you can write in it as frequently, or infrequently, as you desire, or use it for entirely different purposes than journaling.

I got this book to make notes of usernames and passwords, keep notes and records of my computer configuration. It's small enough to keep in a decent sized purse, or a large pocket, and is of a sturdy binding and construction.
The cover has a nice grain finish to it, making it pleasant to hold and use. Some journals have covered surfaces of a somewhat irritating cloth and this was a nice difference.
The lines are spaced not too far apart for handwritten notes and are consistent. I liked it enough that I bought the green one as well to keep a maintenance log for my aquariums.

I didn't expect this book to teach me about the holocaust and world war II. I was curious of the role of Mr. Peter Malkin in capturing Adolf Eichmann. After reading the memories and looking at the woderful paintings in the book, I realize how important life is. And how woderful it is I live in a free country where things like this do not happen. I enjoy to digest the narratives and the paintings in the book, trying to imagine how it was done over 40 years ago.........it is such a good book that I would recommend it.

I bought this book mostly for the artwork but the story behind the pictures also seemed--and is--very interesting. I came across it through a New York Times article and read more about it on Peter Malkins website. This is such a wonderful book. Every page is printed in georgous color and the artwork is fantastic. If you like the sketchbbook style paintings you see here and on his website, you won't be dissapointed. If I had to complain about anything it would be that the pictures run too far into the binding of the book (to help show the original sketchbook) and is sometimes difficult to see the pictures in all their glory.

I just love this book! It confirmed what I've known and practiced for many years. Journaling helps bring a balance and healing to my life. What I didn't realize was how when coupled with art expression it magnified the effect. I took a one hour art therapy class at college years ago, so this set the foundation for this concept. I appreciate the openess in which the artists and writers share their stories and examples of their creations. The work is beautiful. The book is well written and well illustrated. My mother passed away last year. I have begun my own art journal titled, "The darkest day; the darkest night." It has been so helpful to me that I have taken this great book to my school and shared it with some of my students and they are creating their own creative art journals. This book has touched my life and now is touching the lives of some of my students. Thank you Sharon Soneff for sharing this great work and for all those artists and writers who shared their stories!

I purchased this book solely for the fact that a friend of mine was a contributor... when it arrived I sat down and turned straight to her pages and was just blown away by the book as a whole.
While it is an amazing showcase for what is possible when creating a journal-- this book is so much more when you read the contributions and let the words and feelings wash over you.
I saw myself and some of my life experiences laid out in someone elses words-- it was a powerful way to realize that we are not alone with our individual struggles.
Save on shipping and get two! You will want to bless SOMEONE you know with a copy of this amazing work.

It's sometimes difficult to know until you hold a journal in your hands if its quality is worthy of your thoughts. Curious about this series of blank books, I located one in a Border's store so I could examine it closely, and was sold (though I actually bought several of various styles through Amazon due to the greatly reduced price and wide selection).
Just wanted to reassure any curious journal-keepers that this is a very nice book for having paper binding. The surfaces of the front and back plates are silky smooth, taut and very pretty. The spine, being sewn with strings, is tight, yet allows the book to lay completely flat when open. The pages inside are very smooth, practically non-porous grain, and of a medium weight, thick enough for fine-tip pen-and-ink, but too thin for any other medium of drawing or writing element. I'm usually a fan of leather-bound journals because they're sturdier and more aesthetically pleasing to me, but as paper-bound journals go, these are among the nicest I've seen.

This blank book has all of the features of the larger blank books, but it's small. I found it perfect for writing my own book of Life Lessons. I like having blank books for various purposes - capturing quotes, writing letters, etc. This size is handy to have on my shelf. Sometimes what I want to write just seems to fit better in a small book.

These essays go so quickly to the heart of the matter, drawing on as much common sense and lived experience as intellectual clarity. A witty tone along with real-life meaning--quite a combination.

This was the first personal item I ran out to buy when we learned our second child was on the way. Our firstborn has the earlier design, with the vintage shoes, and I love it. The look, feel of the paper, and the vintage design help capture the timeless aura of the early days more than a commercially-styled book that will date itself in five years. Ms. Schenck lets her artistry shine in these beautiful memory books.

We received an earlier addition of this book for our son before he was born. It is one of the best baby books that we have seen. It allowed us to journal and to document things about the pregnancy, ultrasound, first holidays, growing chart, firsts and express our thoughts on what he would be like. It was nice to be able to have specific pages to document his life even before he was born. Most baby books start at birth, this one starts at conception.
I love this baby book!

We bought an earlier edition of this book for my son and have enjoyed using it through the years. As we get ready for our second child, we are excited to share this experience again. The book is displayed very well and is more fun than other baby books available.

Ivan Van Sertima does it again with this amazing book, profiling various African women throughout history, with the words and research of the best scholars. In this book, it begins with the scientific mother of civilization, know dubbed Lucy, who's bones were found in Ethiopia. If what archeaologist know have is correct, an African women birthed all the peoples of the earth 150,000 years ago. This book also touches on Hapshesut, who was probably, the most outspoken women in Egypt, who refused to take the back seat to then Thutmose III, and ruled Egypt as a man. Next this novel goes to the Queen Candaces. During the Invasions of Alexander, the Candaces fought him off and refused to allow him and his men to enter Nubia, after they had capitures Africa's most known daughter Egypt. Another point, but not the least this book touches on is Nzhinga. Nzhinga fought the Portugese invasions off, refused to become a Christian and adopt a Christian name, and fought to stop the slavery that was then, in it's beginning stages.
In the end, this book is excellent and lives up to the standard that we are used to getting from Van Sertima. This is an asset to every Libary.

THIS IS A WELL RESEARCHED AND VERY SCHOLARLY BOOK. IVAN VAN SERTIMA AS WELL AS THE CONTRIBUTORS TO THIS WORK HAVE PRODUCED MUCH INSIGHT ON AFRICAN WOMEN IN WORLD HITORY LIKE QUEEN NZINGA, THE CANDACE QUEENS, MAKEDA (QUEEN SHEBA, HATSHEPSUT AND MANY OTHERS. I FEEL THAT THIS WORK IS OF GREAT SIGNIFIGANCE AND SHOULD BE READ BY ALL WHO ARE INTERESTED IN THE ROLE OF AFRICAN WOMEN IN WORLD HISTORY.
Another job well-done by Van Sertima!

Without being too lengthy, this book thoroughly covers the real and mythical images of the Black woman. It is a wonderful collection of essays from various authors such as the late, great John Henrik Clarke. Historical without afrocentricism. Balanced yet interesting. Do yourself a favor. Purchase the book and order tapes from the back of the book. Another fearless accomplishment by Van Sertima.
