B. B. Warfield who?

Jon Ruthven demolishes Warfield as a Pentacostal. I was healed by His stripes!

Cessationists say that psychology is "All God's Truth" and that prophecy in 1 Cor 12-14 is none of it.

Scholarship on the side of the Charismatics?

Review Date: 2002-09-18
It's ever so true. Mr. Ruthven who is a professor at Regent University has written a scholarly response to the cessationist that demands to be read. Even if one does not believe that the Charismata is for the present day church of Christ, one must still accord the respect due to this polemic.

For too long our theologians have been influenced by the cessationism of John Calvin and Benjamin B. Warfield. Though dead, these two have had an influence upon the majority of the church. Due to the scholarly presentation of anti-cessationist literature, Christians have very quickly embraced this anti-scriptural viewpoint. The cessationist viewpoint has effected other areas of the Christian's devotional life such as confidence that God will interven in answer to prayer, the need for guidance, etc.

Ruthven has done an excellent job of refuting the cessationist viewpoint from the level of a scholar. Yet, Ruthven does not refute this error through scholarship alone but deals with the most important aspect of proving the truth that the Charismata is available today - the Scriptures themselves.

I highly recommend this important work. Get it today if you can find it.

Ruthven has presented an outstanding response to the argument set forth in B.B. Warfield's early 20th century classic "Counterfeit Miracles."

Thiose interested in the cessationist debate would do well to read Warfield's book along with Ruthven's more than competent response.

A long overdue anecdote to Warfieldism

Review Date: 2002-06-26
In this book, Ruthven systematically and carefully refutes a sacred cow of American protestantism that should have been put out to pasture a long time ago - namely the B.B. Warfield philosophy. Warfield's ideas have seemingly been uncritically accepted by many theologians over the years. Few, if any, have taken the time to apply his own standards to his theological system to find out if it stands. Ruthven does the job masterfully in this book and shows not only the errors of the classic Warfield/cessationist view from a Biblical standpoint, but also rightfully points out that Warfield appealed to history (and therefore experience) in an attempt to support his position. This is significant in light of the fact that so many who accept this Princeton theologian's arguements claim that they "go by the Bible alone, never by experience."

A great writer known primarily for his poetry reflect upon addictive substances, their effects, and their dangers. Insightful, timely, and an interesting take, Hesperus continues to publish excellent short unknown translations. Archipelago books does even better with their longer, wider ranging translations, beautifully produced.

Think of this short piece more as a culinary review than a work of philosophy or fiction or even memoir. Baudelaire speaks to the pros and cons of both Wine and Hashish as well as the impact of both on the body. In addition, he dabbles in satire and social insight, giving the reader a wonderful view of his life, opinions and experiences.

Review Date: 2004-10-15
Essential background reading for anyone at all interested in Baudelaire - after all, one of his fondest sayings was 'Enivrez-vous!' - 'Get drunk!', and he often celebrated intoxicated states in remarkable style. Although he is not to be side-lined as a writer whose whole scope consists of these intoxicated states - there was a recent biography which put forward the case that his whole significance as a writer was that of a drug-addict - these states do form an integral part of, as it were 'Baudelaire-land', and it is essential to understand them in order to understand Baudelaire as a poet and thinker. Here, in an attractive hesperus volume, we have him writing directly about intoxicated states, in a fascinating insight into the workings of his mind, his time in Paris, and his attitudes towards alcohol and drugs. Well worth buying.

The journal pages are excellent - I track everything! And the other thing that I always use in the gym is the section with photos on different exercises. I highly recommend it...

After reading the bio and information on Our Memories I believe my daughter and her husband will enjoy composing it throughout the years. The feelings Sharon Small had and her creating this book, mirrored my own feelings some 37 years ago when I had my first daughter. Not only will this serve as a legacy to my daughter's child but it will give a chronological account of feelings, guidance and family roots. Thank you for creating such a wonderful book - can't wait to receive it.

This book helps us provide everlasting memories for our son.

A friend gave me this book for my birthday-what a wonderful gift! The book is a thoughtful collection of prayers and other bits of wisdom from various spiritual traditions-everyone from Meister Eckhart to Makeba, Queen of Sheba. Accompanying the texts are the author's vibrant watercolors-paintings with so much energy and wistfulness that they provoke you as much as the "prayers." All in all, it's a life-affirming book and keeping a copy at the office (where mine stays) is a perfect way to add a few moments of stillness and mindfulness into a busy day.

Painted Prayers is a wonderful book of evocative paintings and inspiring texts. Each saying or prayer, coupled with the artist's gorgeous watercolors, will make you think or cry or daydream or simply bring you comfort. My favorite section is "of contemplation" which features enlightening words from Rumi, Rilke, Chuang-tzu and even Makeba, Queen of Sheba. If the words don't move you, Uttal's artwork will, but taken together, each couplet is a beautiful union.

The other sections -- "upon waking," "of thanksgiving," "of god," "of praise," "of dying," "for the middle of the night," and "of renewal" -- each provide guidance and support for a person's different moods or life-changing events one might face over time. Like a good friend, Painted Prayers can bring you joy or solace on the days you need it the most, which is exactly why I keep it on my nightstand.

A wonderful collection of inspiring text and art

Friends and family can't always be around when you need them, but a good book like this one can. It's beautifully illustrated and the inspiring texts and thoughtful prayers were obviously selected with great care for the occasions you are in need of comfort or insight the most.

The book is organized in eight different sections: upon waking, of thanksgiving, of contemplation, of god, of praise, of dying, for the middle of the night, and of renewal. Some of the most famous thinkers of our time are featured -- Rumi, Chuang-Tzu, Rilke and Leonard Cohen (yes, Cohen certainly fits in) -- as well as interfaith prayers, all complimented by Uttal's expressive watercolors.

The real joy I find in Painted Prayers is it offers words of solace for when I'm down and also words of wisdom to reflect on if I'm looking for guidance. This book in a way can respond to all the crazy and confusing times in my life; I just have to choose that right section. For instance, in times of conflict I can think of what Chuang-Tzu states in the section of contemplation: "when we understand, we are at the center of the circle, and there we sit while yes and no chase each other around the circumference."

It's nice being able to turn to Painted Prayers when my loved ones can't be around. Maybe the book doesn't have all the answers, but I know there's always something in the book that will enlighten me.

If you think your memory serves you well on the courses you play regularly, you're in for a surprise. When I first saw a friend of mine using one of these I kidded him about getting old and losing his memory. He told me a pro recommended it for "fine-tuning" your club selection and that it had taken a couple of strokes off his game on the courses he played regularly (when you're a low-handicapper like him you're looking for all kinds of edges).

I wasn't convinced, but for less than $10 I also didn't think I had anything to lose. Now I wish I had picked one up a long time ago - I'm going to need another one soon, because I fill it out religiously and even keep a photocopy in the office in case I lose it or my bag gets stolen.

It's like having a caddy that has seen every shot you've ever made on every hole standing with you as you look at the bag and start thinking how you're going to swing the club. Sure, there are guys who look at me like I'm waaayyy tooooo serious about the game when I pull it out, but if the game's close, tough.

It also proves how selective your memory can be if you play a lot. A couple of times I've argued with myself about what's in the book versus what my gut tells me I ought to do. But if I'm standing in a sort-of familiar spot and 60% of the time I've made the green in two by using a 5 iron and 40% of the time I didn't because I used more stroke on a 7, well, you figure it out. It's not always dramatic, but statistics don't often lie if you're honest about what you put down.

I also used it to have a pro help me with some trouble-spots, shots that I sort-of knew I needed to learn how to make. They showed up in the numbers after a few weeks. He could tell I was struggling in a few positions on a couple of holes - I was trying too many different clubs and strokes to get over hazards.

Now if we can just get this in a PDA somehow!

Dynamite in a Small Package
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-27
For Long Beach Pike lovers, this booklet is a must. Not much more than 70 pages, but it is packed with dynamite, when it comes to a rich, historical accounting of the Pike from its beginning to its end. Black and white photos in abundance, showing rides, features, landscapes such as many of you may never have seen before.

Did you know, for example, that there were at least two auditoriums BEFORE there was the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium (along with the Rainbow Pier)? Did you know that there were several piers before Rainbow Pier, and that one of them was a double decker? Did you know that there were at least two roller coasters before there was the Cyclone Racer, and that the second coaster was remodeled once? Did you know that the Lido Ballroom was earlier known as the Majestic Ballroom and - even before that - it was known as the Majestic Skating Rink? Did you know that the High Ride was a construction machine once used in Europe? Did you know that there were three different "scooters" at one time at the Pike? Did you know that the first beauty contest at the Pike drew over 200,000 people with about 350 contestants, first prize being $500? Did you know that there was once a Bamboo Slide at the Pike and - before that - there was a spiral gondola ride?

Remember the Laff in the Dark, the Crazie Maize, McGruder's salt water taffy, the Rotor, the double ferris wheel, the deep-sea dive, the Flying Gondolas, the penny arcades and other booths?

You will find all these things in this power-packed booklet, put out by the Historical Society of Long Beach.

Although this book is currently a special order on Amazon.com, I recommend making that effort if you have an interest in the Long Beach Pike amusement park. If you grew up in southern California and are older than 30, you may remember the place.

The Pike was built around the turn of the century, and declined after World War 2, when its name was changed to the Nu-Pike. It was closed permanently in 1979, although key rides, such as the Cyclone Racer roller coaster were closed before that.

This book contains an extensive collection of black-and-white photographs that document the whole of the Pike's history. Recommended!

Change is good! Standard logbooks with those tiny little spaces are now obsolete (not to mention boring). Flywrite Systems broke the mold and created a logbook that not only records flight time, but gives you the space to record every intimate detail of every flight. I love it--no more microscopic shorthand hieroglyphics. The Pilot Logbook and Journal is definitely one of aviation's best kept secrets.

This logbook is outstandingly versatile, but those of you who use this logbook already know.It is probably aimed at the Flight Instructor level and below but i am an international airline pilot and i still use it primarily because it does give you the opportunity to record for your progenitors sakes, your thoughts of the flight, fellow crew members, the ground staff and even the weather etc.I only wish that instead of Cross Country Received the producers could have put in Sic(second in command) times to make it even more attractive to our fellow professionals. All in all though just to quote"there is no competition to this logbook and a wonderful idea",thanks flywrite.I only wish that i had found this logbook 12 years ago when i was just starting out, many thanks and cheers.

This devotional journal is another excellent tool to deepen your personal relationship with God. Each day (undated, so you take your time)contains:
1-A daily Scripture topic
2-An area where you rewrite the Scipture in your own words (very thought provoking!)
3-A few sentences of Beth's wisdom
4-Two different compilations of Scripture with a large area for you to write your own prayer/thoughts
Really helps you take the time to understand the Scripture in your own mind, and is great practice at allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart about God's Word-what it means to you personally and how He would have you apply it to your life.
As with most of Beth's other writings and journals-they're geared toward a free life in Christ; and HIS WORD WILL SET YOU FREE, as YOU ABIDE IN IT!
This has great tools and Scriptures within to help you live the life that is freed, filled with His Spirit-that you can surrender your heart to be the cleansed utensil to be used for His purposes and fruitful for His Kingdom! WHAT A BLESSING!
