Hi! The prayer journal is a very awesome book. It is just the perfect way to become one with God. Even when you are upset this journal is the way to happiness. God has given my mom a gift of writing and she does it like no other. This journal ROCKS! If I were you I would purchase this journal! My opinion is that this journal brings you close to God like nothing else. I am only 12 but I am a pickey person about books and this one kicks all the way to heaven with Jesus Christ! See ya in Heaven!,

Chat with God keeps it simple and more importantly balanced. This tool helps readers to be a bit more intentional about prayer. Rather than offering a series of requests and pleas, readers are coached to contemplate God's nature, express thankfulness, and offer confession as well. Use daily, weekly, seldom or frequently. My experience is that it leads to more consistant and more balanced communication with God.

Jennifer Webster has designed an easy to use tool that encourages all of us converse with our personal Lord and Savior. For those who are already journal writers, this is the book for you! For those who are not...this is a wonderful way to structure your prayers. The journal helps me focus on more than the laundry list of prayer requests that often consumes my time with God. Chat with God is the best prayer journal I have ever seen!

Chat with God is a good book to do your prayers on because it is a prayer journal...it's a cool book...I use it everyday at school with my whole class. My teacher, Mr. Pike, likes it and he uses it too. I love the book because I write from my heart. My mom uses it every morning. My dad uses it at work. It helps him when he is stressed out.

It's dessert at our house:after we finish a meal around the dinner table, we retire with this amusing book...one to be savored aloud. Ages 5-45 join in the memories and laughter. "More! More!" the family pleads, just as they do for any good dessert. We're just hoping this new author bakes up another soon.

I hope I'm not biased about this book, with the author being myaunt. I liked this book mainly because it is filled with funnystories that I have heard many times by my family about my aunt growing up on a farm, having her first (and only) baby, and steeplechasing on her mare, Mele (who I might add died several months ago). My Aunt Robin has always been a very enthusiastic person with everlasting energy which you will surely see after reading this book. It tells about daily activities around the farm gone wrong (when Robin loses a battle with a 100 pound, 200 foot hose and she tells about her talent that no one can beat her at: throwing up at inopportune occasions. I'm sure anyone who reads this book can relate to it, especially those who struggle to keep animals under control, and raise one of the strangest kids on the planet (you don't know my cousin Katie Bo!) I also think the chapter titles are pretty cool: "Great Expectations: The Truth About Pregnancy", "How I was Cured of Being a Health Nut", and "Grown-ups Don't Eat Cookie Dough", to name a few. I really encourage people to read this book not only because it is good, but I'm really proud of my aunt's hard work. You should see her desk and computer!

A Gentle, Whimsical Look At Rural Life

Robin Traywick Williams has assembled a wonderful collection of anecdotes and vignettes portraying the Virginia countryside that she knows and loves. The memories, the families, the dogs and horses, the children [now disguised as adults] who move through these short essays are displayed with great tenderness and humor. The characters, human and non-human, come to life before the reader's eye, and Mrs. Williams's graceful portrayal of all the things that make up her pastoral lifestyle makes one want to pull up stakes and move South.

This is a gem of a book. Take it with you on your next business trip, and escape to a gentler world.

Not only are Robin Traywick's stories engaging, poignant, funny and true, they are well written. (Robin has a master's degree in writing from Hollins College where she studied under Annie Dillard--and it shows.) I have heard many of these stories before, the writer coming from a family who thrives on family tales, but those who have not are in for a treat. The locale might be Goochland, Virginia, but the themes are universal--wrestling with yards of stubborn hose during a drought, trying to keep one's sanity during the addition of a large kitchen, mourning a beloved dog or pony. Some of the memories are sad, some are silly, but the voice is always right on target.

This book has been an invaluable tool for me over the years. I bring it along whenever I carry my Bible and make notes from sermons or teachings as I feel led. It gives me a chance to record my impressions and review my notes later. Each one lasts me about three years and they wear very, very well. They've served to document my growth and are a written testimony to my life in chronological order. I've never found anything to compare to this book and would highly recommend it to anyone. Even someone who is generally not inclined to take notes will find this useful.

A very enjoyable, sincere and warm read. Henninger takes you from the challenge of first deciding to climb Mount Rainier to the training, and then up the mountain itself. You experience the process as though you were there; the weather, the illumination of self awareness, the fatigue, triumphs and reflections. It's a fine read and had me anxiously turning the pages with no small amount of anticipatory excitement. And it's fun. Henninger is a human being; not a professional guide, not a Sherpa, but someone you can like and certainly admire for both his efforts and the accounting of the time he had on Mt Ranier. Read it. You'll like it.

First of all, I'm not a mountain climber, nor do I want to be. I want
to state this up front lest anyone think that I gave this book my
review based upon a love of mountain climbing. While the author does
recount his two attempts at summitting Mt. Rainier, he goes beyond
the technical aspects of mountaineering and offers much, much more.
The book is more an introspective look at why a middle-aged regular
guy would even attempt such a feat. He chronicles his lifelong
fascination with mountains that ultimately brings him face to face
with the reality of looking at planet Earth from above the clouds. I
read the book in "real time", by that I mean I read up to the end of
his first day, put the book down and picked it up the next day when
he was also beginning his next day on the mountain. This added to my
enjoyment as I felt I was sharing the author's experience as it
unfolded. Truthfully, the book can easily be read in one or two
readings. The best part of this book is the spirituality the author
gets in touch with in his time on the mountain. It really comes
across in
his reflective final chapter where he ponders what made him begin his
trek and where does he go from here. I gave the book to my wife to
read and she enjoyed it also. As I stated in the title of my
review it's "A Good Read For Everyone".

In Compass Points, Mr. Henninger takes us along on his quest to climb Mt. Rainier and understand the deeper spiritual power that the mountain holds for him. In telling his story, he invites each of us to locate our own polestar and to summon the courage to live a fully engaged life. Compass Points lifted my spirits and reminded me why I seek wild places.

I originally bought this book when it was first published, in 1982 -- at the book release party, which was held at The Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco. I loved it then, and was happy to find it was still for sale after all these years. It provides such an accurate picture of what was going on in San Francisco during the late 70's; not just the music scene, but the scene in general. And much of it's timeless, but the parts that aren't are fascinating in their 'time capsule' quality.

I remember a lot of the people in this book -- of course, a lot of them are still going strong! I particularly loved some of the photographs, especially the ones with the author in them. My daughter, Nadine Morse, recommended this book to me. It says something about the timelessness of the book that it appealed to a 20-year-old and a woman (slightly!) over forty. I found it fresh and invigorating, and am amazed it was written by a woman younger than my daughter.

I found the quotes from people in the music industry to be highly entertaining, but the best parts of the book were the author's introductions. I'm going to look for more books by this author.

An Exuberance for Life

Review Date: 2001-06-25
Dorothy's Stormy Lake describes the life of an Englishwoman and her husband and their young daughter in the remote Kootenay Bay of British Columbia. Dorothy's story goes well beyond mere descriptions of surviving in the wilderness to a picture of a young woman of wit and wisdom.

Dorothy's experiences illicit a wisdom which is timeless and universal. While an inquiring mind can discern many lessons from her writing, one of the most interesting to me was the notion of community-building. Toward the middle of the book we realize that Dorothy has successfully laid the foundation for her marriage and is preparing to lay the foundation for her young child. Through her activities, which she shares in her journal, we see how she is also building a strong foundation for the community of neighbors. Her attitude and activities in building relationships are as important and relevant today as they were in the remote wilderness in the 1930s. She lives and describes a universal truth about successful living. She writes, "We must live with the spirit of neighborliness uppermost...And it all begins at home."

Dorothy's words caused me to think and to reflect and to examine my own life. A good read, indeed.

Modern Day Pioneer

The author, Joan Wooliver, is my aunt, by marriage. I had heard about the book, and, based on what I had heard, I wanted to read it, to perhaps learn more about my aunt and the environment in which she was raised. I was not disappointed. "Dorothy's Stormy Lake" is the story of a near modern-day pio-neering family, set in Canada's British Columbia province in the early 1930s. Dorothy, a world traveler and teacher, living comfortably in San Francisco, gives it all up to live in a beautiful, but demanding, environment. Without electricity, candles supply light. Without natural gas or oil, wood supplies heat. Water comes from carrying buckets filled at the lake (Lake Kootenay). Roads do not exist; travel to buy supplies or visit friends is by boat to another part of the lake. This is life lived close to the earth. Yet, throughout the book, the hardship of living "off the grid" is downplayed, and the joy of life is celebrated. Dorothy learns to preserve meats, fruits, and vegetables. As time progresses, power is derived from flowing water in a creek, and water from the creek is pumped to the house. The time frame is during the Depression, yet, there is little reference to this economic debacle, other than an occasional mention of the public works for married men (10 days a month) to build a road into the region. For the most part, people get by; they raise fruits and vegetables, some raise chickens (for eggs to eat, and sell), some raise cattle (for milk to drink, and to slaughter). Through it all, Dorothy is mostly optimistic, describing everyday life in her letters. While one might think that a description of "everyday life" would be mundane, this is far from the reality of this book. I found it difficult to lay the book down; reading Dorothy's narration of her experiences was compelling. And, yes, I gained a better sense of my aunt and the environment in which she was raised. I highly recommend this book for its description of present age pioneering and for its facile and powerful read.

A great read.

Dorothy's Stormy Lake is a great read on several levels. First, it is a great read because it paints such a vivid picture of rural life in the 1930s. From its account of the endless work associated with obtaining, preparing, and preserving food, to its warm depiction of the simple joy of listening to a radio, this book puts the reader right in the heart of a pioneer family's life.

Second, it is a great read because of the author's delightful writing style. Did ordinary people really used to write that well?!

Finally, Dorothy's Stormy Lake is a great read because of Dorothy's unwaveringly positive outlook. What a joy it is to read an author who loves life so completely. Despite having started out in a life of privilege and refinement, Dorothy embraces the hardships of her new life with enthusiasm and a sense of both wonder and adventure. This book is a great reminder of the wisdom of the old saying "life is what you make of it." Most of us would be well served by following Dorothy's example of paying attention to life's small pleasures and looking for (and finding) the best in everyone and everything.

On the book jacket it states that Dorothy wrote in her journal for many more years and that Joan Wooliver will be publishing those papers at a later date. I certainly hope that she is busy with that project because I can't wait to rejoin Dorothy in her life on her stormy lake.

A great read!

The writer has a terrific comand of the language. The descriptions of both place and people are such that you feel that you are right there. Dorothy had a zest for life and an enthusiasm undaunted by the rigors of pioneer life in Western Canada that are clearly apparent in her writings. She seems an amazing woman and truly an inspiration undimmed by the years. This is a great book for anyone who enjoys the journal or memoir genre, and one I wholly encourage others to read. I give it a hearty rating of five!

TRUE STORY OF LOVE AND SURVIVAL IN THE WILDERNESS

This may seem like a Daniel Steele novel but it's a true story. During the most difficult years of The Great Depression, a young woman of privilege and refinement moved into the harsh Canadian wilderness with her new husband. Dorothy's Stormy Lake is a collection of letters edited by her daughter, Joan Wooliver, who now makes her home in Anchorage, Alaska. The book explores fond memories of her mother's early married life on the shores of the remote Kootenay Lake in British Columbia. At first it was a tough life for a woman who literally did not know how to boil water. But she soon learned to cook on a wood stove and do many other things necessary to live in the wilderness. Her survival skills developed along with her love for her husband. The couple's life centered around their young family and the lake. Water provided the only means for transportation so many of their decisions revolved around the weather. Getting caught on the lake in a storm could mean a swift, wet death. Despite its ominous title, Dorothy's Stormy Lake is written with warmth and wit. There are many shining moments and an array of interesting and eccentric characters who have also decided to spend their lives far from the comforts of civilization. Dorothy's Stormy Lake will delight anyone who appreciates adventure and romance.

"A WRINKLE IN TIME", "THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE", "HARRY POTTER", "DREAMSCRAPS, A MA?IC JOURNAL" are books that offer pieces of fantasy and imaginative insights into quantum mechanics, some would say, "quantum physics" in an easily digestable form for young readers. This book is charmingly written and full of eccentric characters.

Don't miss it. I could not put it down. It's an easy read, that I enjoyed very much. I look forward to many sequels and expect that "DREAMSCRAPS: A MA?IC JOURNAL" will entertain teen-agers and adults for years to come.

This should be a great read for readers who enjoyed Harry Potter and other imaginative works. This story follows a typical young girl, Katie, who reluctantly embarks on a journey and discovers the true gifts that lie within--gifts that make her more than typical. Her special "gifts" also bring added responsibility with which she must learn to deal, adding greater depth to the story. It builds to a clever climax that certainly will leave you yearning for more story, which hopefully will follow. This story also has cinematic elements that would lend itself to film adaptation.

This is a clever story that is geered to the young adult reader. The reader's first introduction begins a series of questions about who wrote the book ???? a computer? Then carries you quickly into the lives of serveral chacterters, but especially Katie T and her needs to be loved, accepted and understood. As the story continues we see how Katie deals with conflicts in both worlds. A therapist or counselor might use this book as bibliotherapy....helping the reader to open up and/or make connections to the characters in the story. On some level don't we all write our own journey.

The book doesn't really end as we await yet another file to appear on the computer screen.

As with many teenagers, our heroine Katie starts off as a somewhat lost soul. Timid, nearly friendless and feeling unloved, she retreats into books, imagining herself as part of the stories. After a seemingly chance encounter with a strange old man leaves her with a glimpse into an alternate magical world, she is soon embracing her destiny as a leader in a classic struggle of good vs. evil. The rapid fire pace of DreamScraps drew me in before I was aware of it; its cyclonic ending leaving me on the edge of my seat and with a lot of unanswered questions to ponder. I impatiently await the next installment of this "journal," but I can already imagine that there is so much to this fantastical world that the next book will only scratch the surface. Fans of the Golden Compass or a Wrinkle in Time will love this book.

Another worthwhile read from Donaghe!

I have only come across Ron Donaghe's work after reading those of Mark Roeder and Mark Kendrick, and having read his name mentioned by those authors in their acknowledgments.

Although having read the works of those other authors first, and loving the stories they tell, I must say that Ron Donaghe is the father of all gay storytellers, and he is the master of his craft!

The Will Barnett series was something I picked up after having read Donaghe's Common Threads in the Life Series and thoroughly enjoying them all. I enjoyed the characters in the Will Barnett stories just as much if not more than the Reece clan in Donaghe's other series. Just as in his Threads series, Donaghe takes the reader right into the heart of New Mexico and the American Southwest and, from there, right into the hearts and lives of the characters he creates. The people and places on those pages magically come to life as Donaghe masterfully weaves his tales.

The Early Journals of Will Barnett is a must-read for anyone who is looking to get lost in a good story!

I really enjoyed this book because its a 3 in one. All of the stories fallow Will in his own writing about growing up and falling in love. Great books I would recomend to any one who is interested in this style of book.

A Sweet Treasure!

I'm not sure what to say, this book more than deserves a five star rating. Will, Lance and Uncle Sean will captivate you. This book became my obsession; I could not put it down. It is a great, happy story with tender, loving, and hot sex.

Must Read!!!!!

An absolutely wonderful book. Brings Uncle Sean, Lance, and All Over Him together into one volume. Donaghe's interludes introducing and concluding each work ties everything together masterfully and is an added bonus readers won't get when reading the three works individually. The author makes you almost believe you're reading Will Barnett's biography/autibiography and not a work of fiction.

Even though it's set in the '70s and may at times seem dated, this work is actually timeless and should be a must read for any gay teen/young adult.

Let's only hope the author continues the series.

Good introduction to Hopper's life and work

Hopper made my favorite painting, "Nighthawks", arguably the most imitated and parodied painting of the past 50 years. Kranzfelder's biography is fairly superficial, concentrating on dates and major events in Hopper's life, rarely attempting to dig deeper into the subject. But that's OK; I wasn't looking for a full-scale appraisal. The reproductions are excellent and in general this is a good introduction to Hopper's life and work.

While I was superficially attracted to this book because of its stunning reproductions and affordable price, Kranzfelder deserves much more credit. This book is wonderful for amateur Hopper enthusiasts and presents in-depth analysis balanced with connections to contemporary painters and changes in society. Mostly chronological, this book is divided into the various themes such as voyeurism, windows, sexuality, and urban isolation. Another excellent addition to any personal library from Taschen, the best art resource publisher.

I have read the FRENCH translation of this book, and i enjoyed it,even if the approach often is on the intellectual side.No AMERICAN art in the first half of the previous century gets near that man, who visualized his country with a personnal perception. The paintings of HOPPER often gets to you in their quest of lonelyness.PEOPLE IN THE SUN for instance is fascinating. The most interesting aspect about HOPPER,is that his paintings are about the persistance of vision;the way one can try to read his mind.

This is one of the most intelligent and interesting books on Hopper I've read. And I have a good-sized collection of books on this American artist because he's my favorite.

Not only are there rarer paintings and etchings in here not often included in coffee table books on Hopper, but author Kranzfelder shows his influence on photography, and shows the influence of other artists (notably Degas) on Hopper. Kranzfelder puts paintings and photos on one page, and the particular example of Hopper's work on the other so you can see the comparison side by side.

The text is also interesting and full of rare facts and a good analysis as well. If you want a great book about Hopper's work, this is one of the best I have seen. HIGHLY recommended.

I purchased this for my 14 year old as a present. She liked it. This in its self makes it worth 5 stars! On another note it is well constructed and should last the abuse of being carted around and written in for a year.

Twisted but Cute...

If only I'd only known Emily in my youth...As the grown up version of the "skinny geeky weird girl" I could have used the affirmation of my bizarre sense of humor in high school and who knows, maybe I'd have grown up more organized (naaah!)...oh well, at least my daughter (in high school now)can have it...She thinks it is great, along with "Emily the Strange" we also bought. I am hoping to add another "Emily" book to our collection soon.
