An outstanding piece of work! It surprised me when I first read the contents...a Navajo? Yes, a Native woman writing about her city life and at times, focusing on her roots....the traditional way of life. Yet her words are dramatic and powerful. A great accomplishment!

Browsing the Native American Literature section of my school's bookstore (NAU-Flagstaff), I came upon Esther's book and almost jumped outta my pants! Esther and I are alumni of the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, and I am familiar with her FABULOUS way of "painting with words," and I have always thought highly of her work. Over the years I've always looked for her name among the circle of Native writers because she writes with such passion and human truth as experienced first hand by natives at the dawn of a new millennium. It is easy for me, as an acquiantance of Esther's, to view her work and relate the themes and subjects of her poems directly to her personality. It is so wonderful to read what she has produced in "FROM THE BELLY OF MY BEAUTY." Any avid reader of Native/Indigenous literature is definitely in for a treat, so sit back and get ready to laugh, cry and understand.

Once upon a time, falling volcanic ash might have hurt community crops and led a brave teen to scale sacred Mount Ampato. Within the last decade, ash and smoke from Nevado Sabancaya melted slopes and led mountain climbers Johan Reinhard and Miguel Zarate to the 14-year-old's mummified body. Author Susan Vande Griek starts each chapter of her suspenseful short story with facts about finding Juanita. A GIFT FOR AMPATO also works as cultural background to Janet Buell's ICE MAIDEN OF THE ANDES, David Getz's FROZEN GIRL, Harriet Griffey's SECRETS OF THE MUMMIES, Nova's FROZEN IN HEAVEN video, and Dr Reinhard's DISCOVERING THE INCA ICE MAIDEN.

Now in a newly revised and expanded edition, Giving Voice To Bear: North American Indian Myths, Rituals, And Images Of The Bear by David Rockwell is a thoughtful and informative survey of the bear as depicted in Native American stories, art, and culture. Presenting legends that involve the bear; as well as providing eighty-nine black-and-white photographs of bear designs on works of art; along with extensive research; and informed comparisons and contrasts between how the bear is perceived by various Native American tribes, Giving Voice To Bear is a welcome and "reader friendly" contribution to personal reading lists and Native American Studies reference collections.

Beautiful illustrations and a sense of wonder about water and its journey kept both my 3 and 6 year olds interested. We live on a river and in the mountains and talk about the production of water and my 6 year old even recognized that the sea was an end point for the rivers.

This book, which I found at the library(can I say that word here?) was truly engrossing. The author juxtaposes indian and colonial culture so clearly and freshly, putting a historical and very personal perspective on facts not previously so well illuminated. He described and de-bunked for me the particulars of early period of colonial-indian political and territorial relationships. The action and battle scenes are painted with skillful brushstrokes as are the characterizations of the principle players. Mr Gilbert fairly describes with a warm heart the phenomemon which was the native American, sharing the fine points which created this honorable people without filtering the panorama through rose-colored glasses. The reader is reminded of this sad and shameful legacy of our country's history with each turn of the page. I think we would have been a much greater nation had we dealt these people an even hand. Great reading, greta history.

The history of the deceit effected upon Native Indian ancestors, especially the Shawnee, by the British, French, Americans, and by the Iroquois truly made me ashamed to be a white American. We call ourselves "civilized"; the lies, purging, and needless slaughter of Native Indian nations is comparable to the extermination of the Jews. Americans stole this continent from the Indians. Tecumseh (Tekamthi) was an honorable, just man, who only wanted what God had given his people - the land and the freedom to roam it and to use it (Mother Nature). As I approached the last chapter of God Gave Us This Country, I did not want Tecumseh to die; but I know he still lives on in the minds of living Indians as well as those of us who avidly study Native American history and who prefer justice

This one is the best one out there! The author has put together a very important study on the phenomenon of white shamans, the latest neo-colonial model for the replacement of the proverbial noble savage with his bleached out clone from the suburbs. Now that Castaneda has been thoroughly debunked and people are starting to wake up to how much time a money they have wasted trying to find the Garden of Eden on the shelves of the New Age spiritual supermarket, maybe they can "find their roots" by taking a proverbial "look inside themselves" and see how they got let down the rosey path by hucksters with feather decorated drums and beaded chokers.
By the way, there are no Toltecs. They disappeared from history some 700 years ago.

Going Native Or Going Naive? White Shamanism And The Neo-Noble Savage by Dagmar Wernitznig is a scholarly and seminal study of the "new age proliferation" of those born outside Native American tribes and culture who take it upon themselves to adopt the title and role of "Shaman." Wernitznig provides his readers with an evenhanded exploration of tangled issues of identity; devaluation of religious believes when those outside of the religion claim its titles; the purposes pursued by non-natives who consider themselves shamans; New Age eclecticism and environmentalism; women who adopt the role of shaman, and so much more. Strongly recommended for New Age Studies, Religion/Spirituality Studies, and Native American Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists, Going Native Or Going Naive? is a meticulous and thoughtful dissection of motives, beliefs, and impact.

The Good Rainbow Road is a fable written by contemporary Native American author Simon J. Ortiz. Though it is not based upon any traditional Native American legend, it has been deliberately crafted with the inspiration and narrative style of such. It is a tri-lingual storybook, with its adventurous tale presented in English, Spanish, and the Keres language of the Acoma Pueblo Native Americans. Brightly illustrated by Michael Lacapa in a slightly stylistic manner, The Good Rainbow Road tells of two brothers who set out to rescue their village from drought, yet for one brother, fear is a far more dire obstacle than even the most perilous hazard. The Good Rainbow Road is a most enjoyable and enthusiastically recommended Native American story exposing avid young readers to languages and cultures outside of the mainstream.
