An important work

Some works on the Celts are almost pure archeology, others border on new age rubbish while still others use the writing of the classical Mediterranean authors whose works are not only full of contradictions but were written for the audience of the times they were written as a type of political propaganda. Rankin is a scholar who bridges these gaps and offers a level headed approach to the Celts who came in contact with the classical world. Authoritative and reliable.
A must for the Celtophile.

This is a really helpful compilation of information pertaining to this topic. There's a lot of very shaky, pseudo-mystical scholarship about the Celts out there. This, however, is a book you can trust. If you're into the Celts, or if you're a classicist interested in broadening your knowledge base, you could do a lot worse than this book. Also, if you're looking for real information about the Celts, look for the website for the Institute for Advanced Studies in Dublin. They have a School of Celtic Studies there, and everything they print can be considered a legitimate, authoritative source of information. Also, if you do pick up this book, you'll be getting a stupendous bibliography for your money, which could easily constitute a guide to a lifetime of reading on this subject. Two thumbs up.

A fantastic resource on Native American 3rd/4th genders

Will Roscoe has compiled a wonderful and invaluable overview of a long-neglected topic. As he notes in the introduction to this volume, our language is currently burdened by an archaic and often unhelpful lexicon in addressing 'third and fourth genders' so commonly encountered in pre-Columbian North America. This book includes a compilation of the historical and current literature, and readers will find the extensive Glossary and the Tribal Index to be of great use as a source for further investigation. Roscoe's will undoubtedly remain one of the most useful contributions in this are

By starting with life experiences of some individual male and female berdache, Roscoe literally captivates readers, before carrying us into the comparative, theoretical, analytical second half which is sophisticated but clearly written. Will Roscoe's work on North American berdache/"two spirit" is far and away the most theoretically sophisticated and historically systematic work in a burgeoning field. While many people have been pawing at a few historical records and fantasizing a great deal, he has systematically gone through a multilingual literature, showed how the discourse unfolded in specific European national traditions, and sorted out continuities and discontinuities in space and in time (both in the discourse and in the phenomena of Native American cultural survivla, insofar as it can be glimpsed through Christianity-distorted lenses).

Although Roscoe's primary focus is on historical records of "berdache," he has also discusses contemporary "gay Indians," building on his earlier book _Living the Spirit_. My only regret is that Roscoe did not include his article "Was We'Wah [the Zuni "man-woman' he wrote an earlier book about] a homosexual?" in this book. _Changing Ones_ is the single indispensable book on the subject of gender and sexuality of Native American gender-mixing roles.

I read this book pretty quickly. I couldn't put it down. It had so many funny and mysterious parts. I love the character: Singing Bird. She is so nice. I love the Raven who says "Write it Down" all the time. It totally makes me break down laughing!! It is such a funny book with so much excitement. I totally think that this book would be suitable for anybody who loves the study and science of birds: especially ravens.

I highly recommend this book to anybody who needs to find a book and doesn't know what to read. Great book. It's a must read.

This is a beautifully written and important book, which should be read by anyone interested in the Cherokee and the human condition in general. Also highly recommended is Walking the Trail, One Man's Journey Along the Cherokee Trail of Tears by Jerry Ellis. Nominated for a Pulitzer, it has been in print for 16 years and chronicles his 900 mile walk along the Cherokee Trail of Tears.

This book should be must reading by every American. We vaguely know that Indians inhabited this land long before any of our ancestors even knew it existed. But we sure don't know much, if anything about the noble Cherokees. Remarkably the author is not a trained historian, but an interested pediatrician. The detail and historical documentation is fascinating. I can't say enough good things about this treasure and highly recommend it.

Written for readers of all backgrounds, A Cherokee Encyclopedia is a one-volume quick reference to the different groups of Cherokees within the United States and their history. Entries are listed in alphabetical order and include brief biographies of famous individuals in Cherokee history, different bands of Cherokee Indians in the past and present, Cherokee societies, and more, illustrated with occasional black-and-white photographs. From Keetoowah News, the official newspaper of the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma, to modern "tradition bearer" of old songs, tales, Cherokee hymns, and flute melodies Tommy Wildcat, A Cherokee Encyclopedia is an up-to-date resource highly recommended for modern Native American reference shelves.

This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in the Cherokee. Also highly recommended is Walking the Trail, One Man's Journey Along the Cherokee Trail of Tears, by Jerry Ellis. The book is about his 900 mile walk along the Trail of Tears and it was nominated for a Pulitzer and a National Book Award. At long last, books about the Cherokee are starting to get the attention they so deserve.

This book brought me closer to the truth of what happened during the awful times of the Cherokee removal. It is unfortunate that our government had mistreated the wonderful Natives of this land. I recommend this book for anyone who wants a clear understanding of what happened in American history. It is a shame that schools do not provide enough truth about the Native Americans.

Thank you so much for writing this book, Mr. Conley. I have just started getting back in touch with my Cherokee roots. This was a perfect starting point.

It is so heart-warming to read about a kind and loving spirit who dedicates his life to helping others. The lessons contained in the book should be learned by all. Thank you for being such a wonderful teacher and example, John Little Bear.

I am always looking for and reading American Indian history books and this is one of the best oral histories and collection of images that I have come across. Plus the price is affordable! One of my favorite aspects of this book is that you get to hear the voice of the Indians in regard to history from their perspective.

A well researched and beautifully written account of a time in history that usually finds its focus elsewhere. The devastating effects the Civil War had on our Native Nations is sadly overlooked in our study of American History. Ms. Confer does an outstanding job of bringing it to life for us in an interesting and readable work. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more from her.

The book is well written, and readable. The research is amazing ,scholarly and accurate. We don't offen see Native Americans portrayed that honestly, or thouroughly. Very different from the Hollywood
verison.
