Ramona reminded me of myself when I was a little girl. She does things that most kids only think of doing because they are afraid to get into trouble. I love the reality aspect that Beverly Cleary brings to the story. Not only does Ramona LA Chinche take me back in time, it allows future generations of kids to see that they aren't the only ones to think up some of the crazy stunts that Ramona pulls off. This story is a hilarious page turner from the very beginning! I'd recommend it to any school teacher and, of course, all students. What a great read!

Held my kids spellbound

Stockard Channing's rendition of "Ramona the Pest" kept my kids (6-year-old boy, 5-year-old girl) silent for the entire book--3 1/2 hours. They were captivated by Ramona's crises and adventures. It is hard to believe that this book has been around for so long because so little of it seems dated. I enjoyed it as much as the children did. Ramona Forever was not quite as gripping, but when we got in the car today to return from our trip, my son reminded me that we had missed the last few chapters and we all listened quietly to the wedding and the arrival of Algie. Then we put in Ramona the Pest--again! I just got online to order more Beverly Cleary books for our next trip. Forget the DVDs and pop one of these in!

A strange occurrence - coming upon a self-epiphany while thousands of miles away from what it's about. It's what strikes Ernest & Magdalene in "The Region of Lost Names". On separate trips, the two discover their true thoughts about their families and begin to think about them- and the past mistakes of their parents. Faced with this thought, they turn to repair the mistakes of the past in this deftly written tale of a family dealing with itself. "The Region of Lost Names" is highly recommended and a top pick for community library fiction collections.

It's tempting to think that Rogelia's House of Magic is simply a beach read but think again! The characters will take you on a journey that dives deep into the heart and soul of what it means to be a young woman and the magic that resides in all of us. This story will stay with you long after the last page and make you email Jamie for part two!

I think that Selena is the best Tejano singer in the world. I think she is the best Singer now in 1999 even if she's not here.I am still dreaming of her. She makes me cry everytime i see the movie. That's why my mom never let's me watch it anymore i saw her movie like 29 times. Selena is the best singer and she is beautiful. I love the song Dreaming Of You cause that's when her last memories were and she said that's her favorite song to. I also like Where Did The Feeling Go because it is such a beautiful strong song. I like Biddi Biddi Bom Bom and more i also like her faimly they are very good for supporting her. I would love the family to be happy again Selena's faimly. She is the best Mexican American ever.

If you enjoy stories by the likes of Carver, this book is definitely for you. These stories are like quiet explosions, sneaking up on you with a surprising punch, even though the language is spare and low-key. The segues are a particular treat, tying the stories together into a coherent whole. More than just a collection, this book is a complete piece of work that works together beautifully. "La Luz" and "A Place in France" are my best picks.

Up-to-date information
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-20
This is a recent book that has very useful information. Anyone who works with Hispanics in the USA needs this book. It is a well prepared, easy to read even for novices book that is a great resource. It is difficult to find information that gives you a good insight into the facts and figures that no one else has taken the time to present in such a way as to give you the "big picture" of the Hispanic situation in the USA. I can recommend this book as one that you will not put down and a great resource for facts and figures.
There is not a better resource out there, trust me. With this book, you most likely will not be needing another for awhile. I like that it brings up issues that are largely ignored when looking at demographics and the Hispanic presence in the USA.

A poignant and enduring story written for young readers
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-05-23
Soledad Sigh-Sighs/Soledad Suspiros by Rigoberto Gonzalez is an absorbing bilingual (English/Spanish) picturebook about Soledad, an eight-year-old latchkey girl who comes home from school to an empty house, because everyone else in the house has to work all day. At first she creates an imaginary sister to be with her, but then she starts to make real friends in her neighborhood. A poignant and enduring story written for young readers just about ready to graduate from picturebooks to kids' prose books, warmly illustrated by Rosa Ibarra.
