Two stepsisters start out as strangers but become friends.
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-29
On the southwestern frontier in 1829, stepsisters Rosita Trevino, sixteen, and Maria Alvarez, fifteen, both dream of better lives, but they do not realize how much they have in common. They're more strangers than sisters. On the same day an American named Austin sails down the Rio Bravo to their home town of Guerrero, Rosita's father brings home a rich old man who choses to marry her! Desperate to escape, Rosita runs away, boarding Austin's steamboat. That very night, Maria sneaks aboard, disguised as a boy! Rosita discovers Maria was just as miserable as she. Along the difficult and near deadly journey down the river, they face an attack by bandits and a fire. But it's when they are kidnapped and held for ransom when they must truly work together. This was an excellant addition the American Sisters series (the first new book in a year and a half!) that brought to life the American southwest (then part of Mexico) in 1829.

My two year old loves lift-the-flap books and she is a devoted Dora fan, so she LOVES this book. Although it is not culturally authentic, this book is nice to help teach your child prepositions in Spanish.

A very personal journey in the education of often-marginalized students. Written by educators who clearly care about the education of such students. Chapters cover not only the classroom teaching, but also the administration of schools.

What a wonderful book! Another in the series of "Middleton Elya/Chapman" eight animal capers. This cute story introduces Spanish vocabulary in a way that the readers won't even know they are learning!! The book is illustrated by reknown Puerta Vallarta artist Lee Chapman. Chapman's whimsical style brings smiles to every page.

Spanish is not my native language, (I think that the verb should be esta' not es, but I don't know how to make accented characters inside these forms.!) Anyway, ALL of Eric Carle's artwork is FANTASTIC, and in this case the text is also engaging. Used this successfully for our library storytime.

Captures a Special Moment and Place
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-20
This book captures a special moment and place. Set in south Florida (Ybor City) at the height of the Great Depression, El Lector provides a lyrical portrait of a time when the oral word was valued. Told from the viewpoint of a young girl named Bella, the story focuses on a time of rapid social change and what Bella can do to help her family. Well written and beautifully paced. This would make a wonderful film.

Review Date: 2006-07-12
The Enchanted Lizard/La Lagartijita Magica by Aubrey Smith Carter with illustrations by Molly Branton is an engaging bilingual tale of villagers living and working in the noted pottery-making community of Mata Ortiz and follows three of the young villagers in their decision to make a grand pot in a coming competition. Following Lila, Marina, and Enrique as the competition heats up between them and a boy named Beto, The Enchanted Lizard/La Lagartijita Magica offers young readers a remarkable story in both Spanish and English. Enhanced with the inclusion of an English/Spanish vocabulary list, The Enchanted Lizard/La Lagartijita Magica is very highly recommended for all young bilingual readers and students as a lyrical and entertaining story with which to practice their bilingual reading skills.

My four year old loves this story about a young girl trying to raise money for dance lessons. Estela is an independent, spirited little girl with a good heart. Our bedtime readings of this story has prompted meaningful discussions about empathy. It's a great book for your family collection.
