A Baroque text, rife with ideas

Stylistically, this is certainly is an extraordinary, and extraordinarily odd, book--an uneven mix of law and economics, law and literature and law and religion, juxtaposed with reflections on legal history; thematically, an intellectual history of the institutions that sustain the rule of law and political pluralism. The book is packed with fascinating insights and controversial propositions; the only adequate response from a reviewer would be to write another book.

The history that preceded U.S. constitutional law

This is an unusual book with a fascinating thesis and a wonderfully eclectic scholarly range. The author makes the striking claim that the legal system of Spanish Colonies had much in common with current American constitutional law and the US Federal system but that these features of the system were destroyed by Napoleon. He even suggests that the US constitution writers may have been directly or indirectly influenced by this model.

A new take on the late scholatics

Review Date: 2006-02-26
The book is a study of 16th and 17th century legal humanism. The literary style is baroque, not schizophrenic. I rather enjoyed the author's fevered, florid prose. It is true that those qualities are mostly absent in the academic world. That is why so much academic writing looks drab and dreary. Another book in a baroque style would be _From Newton's Sleep_ by Joseph Vining.

The author is an adjunct professor of Latin American law at IIT/Chicago-Kent College of Law, and director of the newly formed Latin American and Caribbean Law and Economics Center affiliated with the Latin American and Caribbean Law and Economics Association and George Mason University. The scholarship is based on original sources (all too rare these days,) not secondary materials, from research conducted when the author was an Olin fellow in law and economics and a Robbins fellow in legal history at the University of California's Boalt Hall School of Law in 1998-1999. Too many Latin American authors are Anti-American, this one comes out of the Chicago-school, and is not likely to be overly biased against this country.

Any legal history of public law that looks at the confederalist system of the Kingdoms of the Indies, which developed judicial review back in the 16th century, is not only innovative, but may be quite a noteworthy contibution. Much more so if the scholarship comes from a Latin Americanist who works in rational choice theory rather than more traditional approaches, relying on the historical and cultural record.

If anything, I'd assail the intellectual history presented here as showing the author's antiquarian affection for books and not rigorous historical narrative, but the author of a work of synthesis sometimes must pursue a thesis as Mr. Granado does. Legal history is changing its face, look at the work of someone else, the economic historian Avner Greif of Stanford, who also combines economics and legal history. Mr. Granado adds literary theory to the mix.

Searle's best

This is NOT the typical interviews book, in which the author, too lazy to write critical work, chats about personal stories. Mr. Faigenbaum thorough understanding of Searle's body of knowledge allows him to delve deeply into his philosophical developments. The reader can therefore easily comprehend the crucial role Searle played in 20th Century American philosophy. Mr. Faigenbaum does a good job at using the interview format to his advantage, keeping the book conceptual, complete and entertaining.

This is NOT the typical interviews book, filled with self-indulgence and old-time stories. Mr. Faigenbaum uses his deep knowledge of Sarle's developments to discuss the central aspects of his body of work. This non-compromized approach, sheds light on the key role Searle played in 20th century's North American philosophy. Thorough but also entertaining, a book that should be read by anyone who wants to understand the underlying tension in current phlosophical ideas.

I recomend it definitely

I was very helpful for me to read this book. It helped me to underestand many complex ideas, and to understand the most general positions of this scholar. I recomend it for everybody studying Searle's developements. It is easy reading and very deep. Dr. Faigenbaum, the interviewer, did a great job.

A comfort for all women...
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-18
This book speaks to so many women because we all seem to have "something" we need to overcome -- a disability or flaw, a bad childhood, a rough teen or young adulthood, a sin or lifestyle that has tormented us -- and overcoming whatever it is can be hard. But this book guides the way, helping the reader deal with that "something" that makes us doubt our purpose and our place in God's plan and even want to give up.

Chapter 5, "How to Prevent an Identify Crisis," is an amazing comfort and source of support, a great start in making the doubts and worries disappear. The book gives you a tremendous feeling of security and hope. No matter what your past, the future is guarded by God, and a purpose awaits.

I have dealt with self-esteem issues from my past mistakes for a long, looooong time. I had been seeing a professional counselor who felt that many of my feelings of anxiety were based on a lack of self-esteem. I picked up this book by chance, based on the title, but was happily surprised that it contained so much more than the cover implies. The author gives specific references to Scripture that help with feelings of anxiety, dealing with a broken past, abuse, and shame. This goes way beyond self-esteem. This book has saved me countless times when I began to feel the downward spiral begin. I loved it so much, I bought several other copies and gave them to women I knew who were facing similar doubts and regrets, and have seen the change in them as well. I cannot stress enough how wonderful this book is!

A book that really seems to make a difference!

As a Christian counselor I receive promotional books on occasion, and when I received this book I asked my wife to take a look at it and give me her opinion. Her response surprised me! She loved this book to the point she couldn't put it down. She said it addressed several personal issues for her that had been lingering for some time. She liked it well enough that she gave copies to several of her family members. I purchased several copies to sell or give away at my counseling office. Each person I gave it to remarked how insightful the book was and how much of an impact it was making in their lives, especially the part on forgiveness. One counseling client came back and bought 5 or 6 copies to give to her family members! Hey, that reminds me, I need to reorder....I think I have run out!

Soothing the soul

Review Date: 2002-06-10
Once upon a time in a far, far away country called Argentina there was this sorcerer invoking angels and ghosts, silly, funny, profoundly human. His writings appeared in a small courageous (it survived a military dictatorship) humorous magazine, called "Humor" (obviously). The sorcerer had (still does) also a radio program late, late in the night: "Demasiado Tarde para Lágrimas." His collection of short writings finally were published in this book: "The Stories of the Gray Angel." Dolina provides balsam for our beaten, tired souls through his stories. His wit, his extensive literary and philosophy knowledge pervade through every page. The book is about life (between absurd and fantastic) in the Flores neighborhood in Buenos Aires. One cannot avoid feeling that Dolina is Borges in sneakers, dressed as an "hincha de futbol" (an Argentine soccer fan). From all the stories, the ones I enjoyed the most were those about the adventures of "Los Hombres Sensibles de Flores" (Flores Sensitive Men), a bunch of dreamers that are not far from being grown-up innocent kids, perhaps, parhaps I feel identified somewhat. This book is among the very few in my collection that I have read a hundred times: every time I need it to soothe my soul.

Gracias Kushner.Gracias.

David Trueba pictures the (almost plausible) last trip of 4 Spanish friends before entering maturity in a rather harsh way. FUNNY AS HELL, the story speeds up through laughter, dreams, pains, errors, dreamy adventures... and a whole lot of vacational bumps.
Even though David pictures (with eerie perfection) the life attitudes of mid-90's Spanish youngsters, you will not be dissapointed if you are not from Spain yourself: after all, we are not THAT different!

P.S. As opposite to this one, you may well skip his first book "Open all night".

This is one of the books that have most impressed me ever. This book is a collection of humor, credible(realistic) stories, a protagonists's deep background and, the most important for me, how the author tells us the wole story.

Despite the teen scene, in this book you can see what happens in the protagonist's mind and the teen scene is only a situation in the story. This book tells us the feeling, thinks and protagonist evolution.

Resuming: is an orgy of laughs in a too real scene, too real proganonists, too real mind and has really it has content.
The book allawys is telling us someting.

Excuse me for my english...

Ignore the critics and read the book. Trueba put with the perfect words feelings and memories of normal guys. It's a Matrix-pill that makes you think and put things in prospective. Once again, just read it.

I gave it 5 starts for realism and effectiveness.

This book is great. As a Spanish teacher, I can use it to encourage my students to read and enjoy things in the language they are learning. The material is already familiar to them and it makes it easier for them to read. The students love reading their favorite classic stories in another language. Even though it isn't authentic reading material from a Spanish speaking country, it is a wonderful book!

I bought this book for my 5 year old daughter , she is bilingual and she loves Disney stories . She loves it , we also have the stories in english so she enjoys the same stories in both languages . It is a great book , the translation is really good.
The only comment I have heard from her is that not all the pictures have colors , she would like to have all of them in color but she still enjoys it, it is a great buy.
