A Timely Novel About the Human Experience
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-06
Although this novel is a fictional story, the topic is a timely one. The story brings to light a common stereotype and then proceeds to shatter it by giving it a human face. The reader is given unbiased insight to realities and cultural differences that many Americans either are unaware of, or fail to consider for whatever reason. On that same token, this is not a book that preaches in any way. The story is well-written in a literary sense, the style is smooth and flowing, and the reader is left to see for themselves that despite certain differences, wisdom can be found in every culture if one is willing to look for it and accept what they find. In this book, Spooner's treatment of the emotions that everyone encounters at some point in their lives helps to make the story entirely believable. A strong first showing by this author, and I am pleased to see that another novel has been released.

A contemporary tragedy about a rural Mexican village wracked by fear, speculation, and superstition

The debut novel of T.M. Spooner, The Salvation of La Purisima is a contemporary tragedy about a rural Mexican village wracked by fear, speculation, and superstition, in the wake of the drowning of one of its own at the Mexican-American border. Through personal crisis as well as professional compassion, an outsider becomes involved in the village's suffering, and the economic and social forces driving migrants north. Told in from the first-person point of view of the outsider, The Salvation of La Purisima is a profound and heartrending look of a disenfranchised and poverty-ridden society that, driven by the necessity of its own survival, culturally pressures its members to make a perilous migration and earn money whether they want to go or not. Highly recommended.

The Salvation of La Purisima centers on the tragic crossing of a group of migrant workers from Mexico to the United States and the consequences of this tragedy for all involved. Spooner takes us on a journey back to Mexico to deal with the repercussions of this tragedy. We see Mexican culture through the eyes of American anthropology student, Paul Westin. Spooner's knowledgeable and compassionate portrayal of the Mexican migrate laborers humanizes a group who have become dehumanized too often in current political debate.
The romantic relationships are given gravity that is missing from most current American fiction. The men and woman are not lustful animals, but rather real people dealing with that most complex human emotion.
The novel causes us to question the high cost of the American Dream, but provides no trite or easy answers to the question. At the conclusion of the novel you come to realize that our way of doing things is just that: A way, but perhaps not the way. Overall, this is a quite impressive debut novel and I look forward to the future work of this author.

The Salvation of La Purusima is wonderful literature

Mr. Spooners tale of Mexican migrant workers is a well written account of a world of which I am largely ignorant. As a result, the honest telling of this story, and its introspective nature created a sense of caring and understanding both for the characters in the novel as well as the plight of the real world people that they surely represent.

The characters were living and breathing throughout the book and Mr. Spooner accomplished this in a way that didn't represent these men and women within the stereotypes that I would have expected.

This novel represents what I love in literature - a thoughtful and well written story with an intriguing plot, 'real' characters and content that challenges the reader to think.

An excellent essay on the human side of mexican migration

Review Date: 2004-07-19
An exciting story about 4 illegal migrant workers facing tragedy while crossing the border between the US and Mexico. The author discusses the powerful social, economic, and political forces behind migration and their implications as the human tragedy makes the reasons of migration unjustifiable for at least one of the migrant workers. The author's deep knowledge of the mexican culture and colorful landscape makes the reading highly entertaining.

... if you're dreaming, if you're breathing air or poetry. This book will make you want to write, it'll make you want to read it again and again, it'll sometimes leave you speechless and breathless, and some other times eager to go and tell others to read it. I must have read it as a whole at least eight times and some poems must've entered through my eyes at least 30 times. And I always return to it. It feels like home.

Cortazar seizes the heart, the throat, the gut... every part of the body. As with most great poetry, critical and interpretive words will not suffice; poetry must speak for itself. Cortazar's simplicity and force lies in its ability to speak volumes all on its own. From his insistent "I accept this destiny of ironed shirts,/I get to the movies on time, I give my seat to old ladies." in "The Good Boy" to his exquisitely simple, "Everything I'd want from you/is finally so little/ because finally it's everything", Cortazar describes simply what it is to feel.

Most importantly, this book is in Spanish and English, so linguistic purists will be able to compare the original with the translation (which for me is also the mark of an excellent book.)

The book is exquisitely written with lively descriptions. The prose is so delicate that one feels, smells and sees what the characters are experiencing. The book is real in the best magical realism way. The setting? Miami, Florida. The plot? A Colombian man who leaves his motherland with the hope of becoming economically affluent, after fulfilling the American dream, so that he can go back home and marry his sweetheart. The reality? Well, reality bites. The main character struggles and so does the reader. I found myself in tears; filled with anger and expectation, and yet at the end of the book, I felt vindicated and fulfilled.

I bought the beginner and the intermediate/advanced versions of this CD set because it's been a while since I practiced Spanish and I originally learned by the textbook method. I really needed both. The method used is so different from the one I was used to that it actually made me work on total different skills, like listening, which I had never done before, and that happened to be extremely useful. This is a step by step repetition process. I have to say that it's helped a lot. Both the beginner and the intermediate/advanced versions have. And the more times you listen the better you get and the easier it gets to understand. The content of the conversations is actually pretty interesting too: The lessons are based on people interviews that are interesting. For the first time since studying a language I've actually learned from the syntax AND the content of the lessons. I made progress, I enjoyed Smart Spanish and I recommend it.

I've tried a few other Spanish cd's that focus more on grammar, and they have their uses, but it gets boring just repeating words and phrases in isolation. That's why I really like this system--you hear actual native speakers and really get a feel for the language--it's rhythms, idiosyncrasies, intonation, etc. So it gives me more of an appreciation for the language, keeps me interested, and motivates me to keep on learning.

I started studying Spanish 20 years ago when I was a union organizer for the Roofers. I took some college correspondence courses. A few years later I left that job to work as a pipefitter.

When I quit organizing, I decided to continue to study Spanish on my own. I bought all the typical educational tapes, the ones where you repeat a
sentence after the voice on the tape. I started reading Spanish nearly every night, to increase my vocabulary. I read one or two Spanish novels a month, depending on how much time I have.

I recently started to work on big, overtime constructions jobs. The past
year I have been on big jobs in Texas, where at least half the workers on
the job speak Spanish. Some speak both English and Spanish, but a lot of the workers speak only Spanish.

I quickly discovered a few things:
One, I had a great Spanish vocabulary. I am like a walking Spanish
dictionary. I'd say I've a bigger vocabulary than 80% of the Spanish
speaking guys on the job. Spanish speaking guys often ask me for the most
correct Spanish word for certain things.
Secondly, I discovered I couldn't understand anything spoken in spanish. There is a lot of slang, but that wasn't the problem. When somebody said something, or when I listened to someone talking on a spanish TV program, a spoken sentence or paragraph sounded like one long, hundred sylable word. It all ran together, I pick up a work here or there, it sounded like it always did before I learned any spanish.
And thirdly, when I spoke spanish to anyone, it was as if I were looking words up in the spanish dictionary and talking, slowly, haltingly.

These cds were like the missing piece of my spanish education. I'm not even done with the first set yet, since I am working 7 days a week, 10 or 12 hours a day. But shortly after starting listening to the cds, playing them over a few times, my listening comprehension increase dramatically. This is really a major turning point for me. The more I can understand by listening, the more spanish idioms and slang I learn. Now, turning on the TV and watching a spanish movie is a learning experience for me. Listening to guys talking at work is a learning experience, since I can understand them. I am now conversing much more on the job, with much more confidence.

Again, I believe these cds were the key. What a great product. I wish I had them years ago. -Greg

If you are interested in learning Spanish the way it's spoken in Spain as well as in South America, this is the language program for you.
It is an interesting program that if the steps are followed, that is, variations in hearing and repeating the monologs or dialogs with annotated notes on pronounciation or grammar, one can actually begin to understand what is spoken. The monologs/dialogs are spoken by a variety of people in different professions, and from different countries like Spain, Mexico, which makes the CD much more interesting than most language tapes.
I am really glad I purchased Smart Spanish and look daily to studying Spanish. Having had high school Spanish almost 20 years ago I also feel confident that I will be able to finally speak Spanish soon. I will be comfortable with my Spanish understanding and speaking because of Smart Spanish.

Marxism, Stalinism, Anarchism in life

What an excellent book for delving into why the Spanish Civil War was lost to fascism when so many peasants and workers were willing to fight to the death for freedom.
Leon Trotsky writes the letters and articles printed here under harsh conditions of exile imposed by Stalin. Their counter posed political programs and the politics of anarchism are brought into life-and-death reality in these pages. A lot about the Russian Revolution too as Trotsky makes comparisons with Spain.
Trotsky fights for a political program to lead the working class and peasants to fight for their own cause against the capitalist class.
The outcome of the Spanish Revolution is history, but for those interested in the politics in Latin America and other parts of the world today this book is a great contribution to the debate on how to fight to win.

Why does the EZLN survive?
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-20
This contribution is being written in mid-2003, as the EZLN approaches its tenth anniversary of having taken the public spotlight. Why does the EZLN survive, when other rebel armies here in Mexico fade away? These others, such as the EPR, state they struggle for power, while the EZLN affirms that it doesnýt.

Nowhere is this apparent contradiction resolved more clearly and succinctly than in Trotskyýs The Spanish Civil War: ýAudacious social reforms represent the strongest weapon in the civil war and the fundamental condition for the victory over fascism.ý This truism is applicable everywhere, even in a country like this one which is not moving toward fascism.

The EZLN has carried out a deep going land reform and established near equality of the sexes in the areas it has liberated. The other rebel armies have not gone nearly as far in implementing social reforms as a critical part of the struggle for power.

Today working people face every problem Trotsky discusses in this book as economic crisis and wars, right wing and fascist movements, face us more and more. This can be a handbook of how to fight, and how to win.

This is nearly ten years of Trotsky's writings on the Spanish revolution that overthrew the monarchy at the start of the 1930s and the Spanish Civil War that went on from 1936 to 1939.
Trotsky believed the situation in Spain throughout these years was like the situation in Russia in 1917 where the struggle of workers for power on their own, supporting the democratic struggles of peasants for land, and of Spain?s colonies for national independence and Spain?s national and regional minorities for their rights, could have won, defeated fascism, and been a new beacon for world revolution. His discussions here are not academic. They are practical discussions with revolutionists on the front lines in Spain, with fighting workers around the world. Trotsky?s correspondence with Spanish revolutionist Andres Nin here is a primer on the importance of principle in politics and on the importance of building an international and internationalist revolutionary movement.

This valuable contribution of the writings of Leon Trotsky, the Russian revolutionary, is essential for anyone trying to make sense of the forces involved in the Spanish Civil War, the revolution, and the defeats to fascism in the 1930s. The book contains letters of Trotsky to Spanish communists and fighters, analysis and opinion of what it would take for the workers to win, and the critical argument for united front actions with others to defeat fascism. Trotsky's writings in this collection are often day to day, written in a very readable style, and the editors have done a good job of footnoting to clarify points for the reader. One quote is worth noting re:the war in Spain: "In civil war, incomparably more than in ordinary war, politics dominates strategy. Robert Lee, as an army chieftain, was surely more talented than Grant, but the program of the liquidation of slavery assured victory to Grant." The Spanish people were not victorious; the fascists did win. This book helps to understand how, why, and even the what ifs...

This is a sweet little palm-sized book that is perfect for reading on the bus or train or during lunch breaks or between classes. It's small size makes it convenient to carry with you anywhere. The print is also rather small so you might not want to give it as a present to someone with less than excellent vision.

Lovely little book.

This is an excellent book for people who know very little about tarot, and want to get a good first impression of it.

The book is printed in color on good paper, and covers briefly every aspect of it - it's history, uses, types of decks, card meanings, and spreads.

The most attractive feature of this deck is that it features cards from many different decks, allowing the reader to get an impression of a wide variety of decks - something I havent seen in any other book, except in the expensive Encyclopedia of the Tarot which is *much* more expensive.

I love to show this book to people who are not familiar with the tarot just to give them a quick impression of it.

My only reservation is the price - I think it's a little too expensive if it's the only item in an order. I'd recommend ordering it along with something else to spread the shipping fees over a couple of items.

This book is perfect for those who just want to dip into Tarot. It is not for a serious card reader, but it will do to help figure out what each card means. I found it most useful to get a look at the different kinds of Tarot deck designs available, and the various spreads for telling fortunes. Great help if one wants to design one's OWN deck, too!

Quite good!

For such a little book, it is loaded with Tarot history and helpful information on the definitions of each card and suit. I especially enjoyed looking at the wide variety of sample cards from various decks. Lionnet also presents several different layouts, besides the usual "Three Card" and "Celtic Cross", that encourage diverse experimentation.

Another helpful item was the collection of "sample readings" at the end of the book. Lionnet applies each layout (i.e. Jungian, dual Options, Celtic Cross, etc...) to a specific Querent and then discusses each card in the spread in relation to the other cards.

A handy book for either the casual or the merely curious, this would make a great gift.

I bought this book for my daughter this Christmas, because she is starting to have an interest in Tarots. So before I wrapped it up, I flipped through the pages, and found my self, not being able to put the book down. Know, yes I know this book is intended for the younger generation, as it tackles issues teenagers would face, and how each certain Tarot card, would fall in that category, blah blah blah. But I found information in this book that you will not find anywhere else. Although this book gives the traditional interpretations for many of the cards, it also gives fresh and new ideas, new insights that really do make since and goes with the changing times.

This has to be "one" of my favorite books on the Tarot subject. Needless to say my daughter caught me reading the book, so that spoiled that, but it is a book that has brought us both together, in a subject that we both love.

I highly recommend this book for all those starting to learn the divination art form of the Tarot, as well as those advanced, trust me, there are may good surprises in this book. A+++++ * * * * * 5 Stars, good book, and very easy to learn and enjoy. This book is destined to be a classic amongst the young, as well as the young at heart.

I bought this book solely out of respect for the author, as I enjoyed greatly both "Tarot spells" and "Tarot your everyday guide". I didn't realise at the time that the book was focused on young adults taking the first steps in this field. I am 28 now, so I don't really feel I am young or an adult right now, but I have to say I shouldn't have worried, as this book is great for everyone. It covers a lot of things I've not seen anywhere else, such as card getting indyosincratic, making different interpretation systems compatible or searching for an specific card in a spread. And once again, I am impressed by the clarity, sense of humour and intelligence in which all this material is covered. If you are starting out with tarot, this is a great book. If you are not, it is still a valuable addition to your collection.

Great book!

I just bought this book as a gift to a friend and started reading it myself. I couldn't put it down. I'm buying myself a copy now! It really explains a lot more about the basics of understanding the symbols and meanings.

A perfect gift for the new student!

I read this book a few years back and really enjoyed it! It served as a wonderful refresher course for myself. Then I had a young student come up to me and ask which book to read concerning the Tarot. I offered him this volume of accurate information, with a copy of the Rider-Waite deck.

I couldnt think of a better place to start! It is written for a younger audience, with traditional information about this classical system of divination. I wished that all new students could get a copy of this volume!

"I first bought this book first a month ago and have since bought both her other two books." I said this in 2002 and I'm still as enthusiastic about Janina's work now as I was then, it is simply a joy to read her prose

The book is richly illustrated with cards from a variety of Tarot Decks, some traditional, some fanciful. Providing a solid introduction to Tarot Art, and Comparative Tarot, which I feel really strengthens any reader.

The Interpretations of the cards start from a pretty traditional point of view, but as she goes deeper, her, wisdom, experience as a reader, and positive nature shine through. These factors combine to make this a very uplifting and positive book for readers of every age. I am myself twice the age of her intended reader, yet I found I had no problem reading the book.

She does not talk down to her young audience, and this ensures the book encounters no age barrier. It left me with lot to chew on, not only for my self, and as a tarot reader, but also as a father with a daughter the age of her intended audience. If you buy one New Age book this year, buy this one, whether or not you read Tarot.

I originally reviewed this book in 2002, now in 2005 it is still the first Tarot book I reach for if I want to compare my own interp of a given card with someone else's vision.
