This is one of the greatest novels of all time. A struggle between two men, one a banker the other a hotelier, who become bitter and sworn enemies only to realise that they need each other and this is apparent in the sequals that follow involving their children. In the end they both find out they had been set up against each other.

I read this book many years ago and I felt so fortunate to have discovered such a great author with so many more books of Jeffrey Archer's to read. I list this at the top of my favourite books of all time including "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee and "The Power of One" by Bryce Courtenay. It's a wonderful story showing the parallels of two men who come from completely different backgrounds. A very powerful book which you won't be able to put down. I have enjoyed reading so many more of ARCHER's books and I hope everyone else will too

I wasn't even introduced to the concept of reading novels, that is when I came across Kane and Abel by Jeffrey Archer. A book which kept me enthralled for over 3 hours was a excellent reading experience. The story of how 2 totally different personalities, of 2 totally different backgrounds come across, their reactions and the tensions underlying their relationship and the power struggle is simply fantastic. The smooth transition with which this book spans the decades is wonderful and it was but obvious that the tele serial based on this novel, starring Peter Strauss and Sam Neil was an instant hit. All over a simply fantastic novel

This book I first read it a few years ago and being an avid reader myself, I can only say that this is a book you must read if you enjoy well written novels. It made me laugh, cry, and analyze situations and behaviours. It is about two men, their lifes, and how they both fight for what they believe is important. Both were born at the same time but in completely different countries and circumstances, one being so rich that he was born in a hospital named after his own father and owned by him too, the other in the middle of the woods to a dying mother with no one around. Life brings them together and we can just say that life is an irony sometimes. Written with style, this is a book you'll want to read again once in a while. One last thing to add - this book served me as a parameter to know what a GOOD book is.

Spanish is our native language and we speak Spanish at home so that our kids learn both Spanish and English. This book is a simple story with rather rich language, my daughter got 3 or 4 words she had never heard before. Besides, my daughter loves the story and the pictures; she likes to look for the mouse and the ýpulgaý in all of the pages.

Healing Wounds: the search for a lost childhood
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-28
A moving autobiography as the author looks to close the trauma of being separated from her family as a child. The decision to send her abroad to protect her from the ideology of the Cuban revolution shatters the author's well-guarded and innocent world. She is swept into history as one more of a massive migration of children thrown into the uncertanties of destiny to live in liberty. In a simple but brilliantly versatile style the author captures in minute details, incidents of silly adolescence and heart wrenching events that would mark her life for ever. Her description of the insidious glass-walled room (the "fishbowl") at the Havana Airport where children were locked in the inside and parents on the outside, in such way that they could see each other but not touch, was of such cruel nature that even an adult reader can feel the agony experienced on both sides. A wall etched by thousands of small handprints, like graveyard headstones, marking the place where those children lost their innocence as they turned to board the planes. I remember those small handprints, highlighted by the tender moisture of drying tears, for I am one of those unaccompanied children whose search for closure lingers on. This is a "must read" book for all the lost generations of Cubans, parents and children alike, whose hearts were broken for the sake of freedom and specially those fourteen-thousand plus unaccompanied children who where part of "Operation Pedro Pan". Orphaned by destiny as they waited at camps hosted by the Catholic Church where they desperately waited months to be reunited with relatives, knowing that the alternative after that time was to be relocated with foster parents in some far away place, or an even more drastic substitute. It is a ribute to those that suffered in silence but conquered those sad memories. It is a consolation to those that haven't but yearn to do so. All that said, this book is not just about children forced to flee the Cuban Revolution. It is written for the countless thousands of separated, orphaned or abandoned children who thru political upheavel, war, economic reasons or other circumstances of life have not and never will have a childhood. To them, I can only say that you are not alone, for God is always with you. Thank you for publishing such a heart-rendering and thought provoking book.

"La Glorieta de Mis Suenos", it's a wonderful and powerful story about a little girl, whose life was turned upside down when Fidel Castro took over power in Cuba. In this autobiography the author reveals her most private and inner feelings about the traumatic changes in her young life; the disintegration of her tight family, the lost of her childhood, and the necessity of becoming an adult due to the circumstances. The author takes all of us, who by misfortune had to live those horrible times of Castro revolution on a journey down memory lane, especially all those children like her who were separated from their families. This is a must read book not only for us Cubans who somehow share part of her experiences as exiles, but also for all those who feel that their childhood was stolen. I believe this book is a tribute to the selfless sacrifice of all those mothers and fathers, particularly Cubans, that were faced with the hard decision of a separation so their children will live free, and also a tribute to those like the author that although very young had the courage to raise themselves from the uncertainly of a hopeless past to find their way back home. "La Glorieta de Mis Suenos" is a legacy to our children and our children's children as part of a period in our Cuban history.

A VERY POWERFUL AND EMOTIONAL BOOK!!

This book gives an account of the uprise of Communism in Cuba from the perspective of a child -- a little girl who can feel big changes happening around her, not realizing how they would change her life forever. The book is full of anecdotes that will make you laugh and sometimes they will make you cry. The way it is written: the metaphore, words play and language used, maintains you focused at all times on the outlook of a little girl. A book for anyone -- those of us who left the island at the beginning of the 60's can relate to Mrs. Bolano's story; those who were born in Cuba at that time could learn, some of them for the first time, what is the root of the problems they are facing today instead of blaming the U.S. government for them; the rest of the world can learn the tragedy Cubans lived at that time and that has not stopped for the last 45 years. I thank Mrs. Bolano for bringing back so many memories of what my life was like as a little girl growing up in Cuba. This book should be made into a movie.

This book is the story of a little girl that had it all in Cuba in the first years of her life, and once communism arrives she looses it all. This book tells you all that she went through in her life as a child, and the impact this has had in her life. This is a true story that will make you laugh and cry. The way this book was written gives you a reality look into what many, many children went through in the early 60's as they had to leave the world and people they knew and loved behind. This book is so powerful, heartfelt and moving that once you start reading it you will not put it down. Great Book!

This is an important, heart-felt story of a little girl whose wonderful childhood becomes torn apart by the communist infiltration of Cuba. You follow her as she, like many children of her era were forced to leave everyone and everything they knew and move to a foreign land. This book shares the unique experience of Cuban children in the 1950s and 60s during their immigration to the US, and the very common human experiences of fear, sadness, and lonliness in elegant and colorful prose. A must read!

This is an excellent book for those who are interested in a deeper prayer life. I received this book as a gift from a friend and it totally transformed my prayer life. At first I thought how on earth could I find the time to spend one hour each day in prayer. Yet as I committed myself to this time with Our Lord becaure of my desire to have have a deeper realtionsip with Him, I found that instead of one hour I was easily spending two hours and more in His Presence. Ms. Schubert's method of prayer is simple but very effective because she covers all the essentials of true praye. I have recommended this book to my prayer group members and have given several copies to others who have indicated an interest in praying more effectively. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to transform their prayer life.

I remember sitting at dinner with Hormel strikers in 1984 or 85, visiting, trying to gain solidarity not only for their strike, but for workers around the country. I remember what they told about what was happening in the meat packing industry in Minnesota, and why the workers in that union fought not just the company, but the union bureaucracy. What they faced then is more like too many workers, not just in the meat packing industry but especially there, face or know they will face soon. This book about the strike is not a sociological or journalistic analysis, but the analysis of a longtime working class leader, who was also one of the central leaders of the anti-Vietnam war movement. In this pamphlet we have the voices and struggle of the Hormel Strikers displayed so that workers of today, around the world, in and out of meat packing can learn from their successes and failures, and use this pamphlet as a weapon in their struggle.

A tale of exile, survival and hope....

Review Date: 2005-05-11
Laura Restrepo's LA ISLA DE LA PASION is very hard to put down, as it is an excellent novel.

In the early 1900's, a Mexican soldier by the name of Ramon Arnaud is stationed at a tiny island in the Pacific, south of Acapulco. He moves there with his wife and a few other people. For all practical purposes, these people are stranded there, while life in Mexico goes on. The Porfirio Díaz dictatorship falls, a civil war breaks, and the country is torn apart by revolution.

LA ISLA DE LA PASION is a story of exile, with all its connotations, including the dream of returning. Sickness, insanity and the force of nature play major roles in the novel. Restrepo also exposes the reader to feelings such as true friendship, love, and loyalty.

Restrepo narrates the story almost 70 years after it actually happened, basically by contacting descendants of those involved.

From the perspective of form, the novel is very well written and easy to read, even as Restrepo jumps from past to present and also from city to city.

The plot is very interesting and the reader will always find himself wondering what will happen next and reading just a bit further before putting the book down.

The characters in the story are extremely well developed and you will end up understanding them, their feelings, dreams, scale of values, and fears.

Apart from being basically a tragic character, Ramon Arnaud borders with being a caricaturesque and comical typical Mexican.

Even though in esence this is a sad story, there is also always a shadow of hope of returning home.

Restrepo also throws in a few elements of magical realism, which adds to the delight of reading this book.

The only flaws I found were a series of typical Colombian expressions (Restrepo is Colombian), which Mexicans do not use or even understand, being said by the characters.

Overall, LA ISLA DE LA PASION is an excellent novel, even though in my opinion it does not reach the heights of Restrepo's DELIRIO.

Clipperton Island is a harsh, unliveable atoll in the Pacific, southwest of Mexico, inhabited only by such creatures as penguins and crabs, covered with a layer of bird guano, and surrounded by treacherous coral reefs. This forbidding speck of land, claimed at various times by France and by Mexico, is the setting for a sad and heroic novel by acclaimed author Laura Restrepo.

The story begins with Ramón Arnaud, a young officer in the Mexican army, who has served time in prison for desertion, and is now trying to rehabilitate himself. When he is posted to Clipperton in charge of a small Mexican garrison and as "Governor" of the tiny island, he sees it as a great opportunity and is determined to do his best. Accompanied by his new bride, Alicia, and his small contingent of troops (each with their own story to tell), the adventure begins with great promise. But then things begin to go wrong. The Mexican government goes through convulsive changes and the Clipperton mission is forgotten. The supply ships stop coming. The weather deals catastrophic blows. And the idyllic adventure slowly turns into an endless nightmare.

The story is told from the point of view of a journalist trying to piece together what happened, years later, and from that of the men and women of Clipperton, whose fates were entwined for nine long years. I won't tell you what happens, of course. You'll have to get the book for yourself. It's a story of heroism, love, disillusionment, loss and grief. And of the resilience of the human spirit. Author Restrepo writes in beautiful, simple, rhythmical prose which captivates you and draws you along. Although my command of Spanish is limited I was able to follow the story and get into the minds of the characters as they struggled, suffered and triumphed. This is a wonderful, though sad, story, a story that will stay with you. I recommend it highly. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.

I've never read an autobiography of someone I knew nothing about. I picked the book because of the strange little girl on the cover. It's an outstanding piece of workmanship. I have never read anything like it. I realized there was something unique going on when I read her description of an incident and then, pages on into the text, there it was again. The same incident described as if for the 1st time. And then, further on in the book, the same incident again. I was completely pulled in by this book. Not only were the incidents interesting but the words. She's a master at description.

For someone that has never written a book it is difficult to imagine how the creative process is made. Rosa in this book guides the reader to a trip were we can see what's going on inside a writer's brain, the ghosts, the fears, the vanity, the anger, the models of inspiration. A fundamental book for every booklover.

Libro excelente... y divertido.. Omar

This is a well done job. Many anecdotes are true, many are novelesque, nontheless, they are needed to explain the story. Picasso, states Rosa,"felt that imagination needs to be applied during hard work, not in a beautiful island with a drink."The story brings to the floor many ideas on how to handle creative impulses. An old friend of mine, now a catholic priest for 50 years, says that some people live a life of highs and that is good as long as you do not hit your head.A well thought out creative live can bring a lot of happiness and joy to family and friends and society as a whole.BTW, I feel that the site of the old Twin Towers in New York should be filled with children playgrounds since they are the sinonimous to liveliness and they stand next to God together with sick people.

The intimacies of Rosa Montero

La Loca de la casa is Rosa Montero's most intimate novel about herself. We learn about the personal fantasies and details about the author through the many episodes that she experienced while writing many of her works. The book is an autobiography and partial biography about other authors that Rosa Montero talks about continuously throughout the book. Each chapter details a specific episode in Rosa's life that in some circumstances led her to put pen to paper. The episodes are told with enthusiasm and incomparable spirit as the author looks back at her life and her life as a writer. Once you begin to read the book you will quickly identify that La loca de la casa is Rosa Montero herself. I enjoyed the book immensely. It is a great journey through the soul of a terrific author.

This book includes useful information that most people are not aware of. The author talks about actual happenings in her life and how others can avoid similar problems or be weary of the immigration laws here in the United States we believe to know so much about. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is or will ever be involved with immigration processing and its court systems.

It is a very interesting book and easy to read; from the first page it catches all of the attention of the reader. It is based on a true story quite emotional and at the same time is a rich source of information for all those who need to seek legal help in an immigration attorney to facilitate procedures for permanent residence or citizenship. Dealing with lawyers is not an easy task and I say this from experience. That is why I recommend to read this book and retain it as a guide to the very informative value.

This book is an excellent read. It is very informative and contains realistic, up-to-date accounts of the immigration process. It also conveys just how difficult it is to legally immigrate to the United States. I highly recommend this book for anyone who plans on, or is currently, immigrating to the United States. Also, it is very enlightening for anyone who wants to know just how difficult and often unfair the immigration process can be.
