As is stated everywhere, this book is really unique (it's bilingual; it's a mystery story; and it has grammar sections and audio). The result is a truly fun way to learn lots of Spanish. And the dramatic way in which the Latin American narrators speak on the CD adds the critical need to hear naturally spoken Spanish. (A question was raised as to the origin of the speakers. So I did some research and verified that the speakers are indeed Latin American.) I highly recommend this book to students and adults. You won't be able to put it down!

This material came highly recommended and I enjoyed it very much. I found that reading the well paced chapters really increased my vocabulary and my understanding of Spanish phrases with little effort. I also enjoyed the opportunity to listen to the story, as that engaged an entirely different part of my brain. Trying to learn Spanish on my own has resulted in my becoming a reasonably good reader, but not a good listener/hearer for comprehension. I would like to try teaching this material to a gifted/talented group of students, as that seems to be what it was designed for. You won't learn everything you wanted to know about Spanish, but it gives you a really great basis and broadens your vocabulary in a very engaging way. (The reader on the CD seems to use pronunciation of Spanish from Spain, which was somewhat difficult for me, as I am focusing on Latin American Spanish. But none-the-less, it was helpful.)

Tyrannotheocracy And A Brave Young Boy

"Captain" Diego Alatriste is a sword-for-hire in seventeenth century Spain--a difficult occupation in a difficult time, a time of outward glory and inward corruption in a country dominated by an out-of-control theocratic machine--The Inquisition. Sure enough the old soldier Alatriste is soon involved in another dangerous adventure, but this one ends in disaster. His young ward, Inigo Balboa, thirteen years old, falls into the hands of the Inquisition, and finds himself interrogated, week after week, in a secret prison, somewhere in Toledo.

Of course, there's much more to the story. A murder mystery. Historical figures from the arts and literature of the time. Alatriste's friends and deadly enemies. A horrifying auto de fe. And the haunting theme of the title--purity of bloodlines, meaning freedom from any taint of the hated (even though converted) Jews.

So, what do you suppose will happen? Will Inigo be burned at the stake? Will Alatriste find any way to save him? Will the murder mystery ever be solved? You'll just have to read the book to find out. Let me just say that Inigo, who is also the narrator, is a remarkable lad indeed.

Author Perez-Reverte writes with profound depth and wisdom, giving his characters depth and complexity, and the action moves along, dragging the reader with it. Yes, the vocabulary is somewhat intimidating, with a number of archaic words I couldn't find in my Spanish dictionary, but usually I could figure out what was going on from the context. This is the second book in the Alatriste series and a fitting sequel to the previous title. I recommend this book highly. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.

This book is riveting! It depicts XVII Century Spain with so much detail and imagination. Capitan Alatriste, an anti-hero sword-for-hire with a code of Honor so true of the Spaniards, is spectacular. And his friend, the Legendary Don Francisco Quevedo, one of Spain's greatest writers, collaborates with him through the story. The book is sprinkled with Quevedo's verses as well as those of Don Luis De Gongora. Inigo, the Captain's 13 year old protegee, relates the story, a la "Lazarillo de Tormes." Simply delicious!

Each book builds more suspense than the previous one read. "Limpieza de sangre" depicts milestone features about life in Spain in the first quarter of the 17th century. Without digressing too much into the social and political quagmires affecting the court of Phillip IV and his infamous, yet resourceful, prime minister Conde Duque de Olivares, Mr. Perez-Reverte's pen takes us to another nail-biting plot involving the Spanish Inquisition. His narrative is once again meticulously labored and his characters are produced quite graphically. His sense of detail is both powerful and realistic.

Halloween is my favorite holiday and now it has a new tradition: a book to be read on October 31, and throughout the year.
"Los Gatos Black on Halloween" is as rich and delicious as a slice of pumpkin pie. All the creepy creatures from the other world are gathering for their yearly bash at the local haunted house. Ghosts and Ghouls, Witches and Vamps, dance and cavort until the scariest monsters of all come trick-or-treating at the door. Marisa Montes' rhyming text is spot on.
And Yuyi Morales' illustrations kick the whole thing up to an even more supernatural level. She layers rich cultural references (Is that an Aztec giving the conquistador the raspberry?) and witty humor (the vain vampire checking his hair IN A MIRROR) into her astounding artwork, reminiscent of the finest Mexican muralists.
This little trick is a definite treat.

If you don't study the illustrations, you'll miss a lot of extra humor. The writing is great, but the illustrations really add an extra twist of irony, as the excuses made by the friends look more and more foolish given their undescribed actions as drawn on the page. My kids love this book.

The story is about an Iguana and her friends that were organizing a party on Saturday. But iguana had to do everything herslf because the snake, the conejo and the tortuga were only giving excuses so they didn't help. The main characteres are the Iguana, the conejo, the snake, and the tortuga. The tortuga, the conejo and the snake didn't want to help. The Iguana is my favorite character because she was the one who did eerything and she did the right thing. Sometimes I ask my sister if she could help me in something and she allways give excuses for not do it. One time my dad told us to clean a room nd only my big sister and I were cleaning and my other sister was only telling my dad that she had done something alredy. I did like the book. My favorite part was when everyone was in the fiesta having a good ime. My least favorite part was when they didn't want to help her deliver the invitations. If I could, I would change the setting o a prettier. I would rcommend this book to my friend. I hink that my brother Frank would like this book (he is three years old).

The Merriam-Webster's dictionary of allusion has far more information than the Oxford Dictionary of Allusion. In addition, the allusions are more contempory than the Oxford. Over a week's time I read the dictionary from cover to cover. I came away with a week's entertainment, a better understanding of some phrases, and understanding of some phrases I had totally misunderstood for years. A fine book, I wish I had bought a hard cover edition.

I am addicted to this amazing little book. If you are at all a fan of language, or if, as many have mentioned, you simply wish to be entertained, this is your book. As would perhaps be expected, its authors are quite erudite themselves, and the journalists and writers that they quote are also top notch. This is my #1 read and I take it everywhere!!! Great for improving one's cultural literacy.

This is like a shorter, more accessible, and American version of Brewer's Dictionary, which this book does cite as a reference. Other differences are that this provides a pronunciation guide for certain words and that contextual examples are drawn mostly from periodicals pre-1999.

It includes allusions to poems ("snows of yesteryear" and "waste its sweetness on the desert air"), the Bible ("Sodom and Gomorrah"), 20th century novels ("Peyton Place" and the "Snopes family" in Faulkner's works), Latin usage ("ex cathedra") and TV ("Eddie Haskell" and "Ozzie and Harriet").

There are explanations of such terms as Daliesque, scorched earth, ignorant armies (forces blindly fighting with each other with no understanding of whom they are fighting or why), gnomes of Zurich, Walpurgis Night, zero-sum game, Mobius strip, Peter Principle, Heimlich maneuver, and non-denial denial.

Reading it, I also learned that the NSA was known as the "puzzle palace."

This book is fun.

I own this book and have given copies away to family and friends. Most people who pick this book up and open it to almost any page will learn something, be reminded of something they forgot, or maybe get straightened out on a misconception they had. Rarely will they put it down without having enjoyed the experience.

Naruto issue 13 is a good issue that Masashi Kishimoto has ever published so far. This issue is a good issue becuase this is the episode when Gara and Sasuke Uchiha fight it out in the 3rd exam. I like this issue because this is when Sasuke reveals the power of the Chidori: 1000 Birds. This move was used on gara when he was trying to do a jutsu that Sasuke sis not wont gara to do. While all of this was going on the other Hogage that was accompaning the 3rd Hokage took him hastage and he turned out to be the on the only Oruchumaru!!!

The story arc for the chunin exams ends during this book and begins something that is all the better. I love the story so far and this adds to the excitement. Too bad it will take until June for the 14th volume to come out. I give this two thumbs up and recommend this to those that love Naruto.

Absolutely the BEST MANGA EVER!!

This is the number-one best manga series in the entire world! I sometimes think Kishimoto-sensei is taking the tragedy-part of the story too far, like with the Third Hokage's death; hat was very sad. Anyways, it's a great series!

I liked this one better than the others because you got to see Orochimaru's attak. Temari wins the fight against Shikamaru in a stunning way. Before Sasuke and Gaara's fight, Sasuke appears with a flashy enterance, casually late. They find the amazing story of the chidori, or lightning blade, as Sasuke unleashes it. As Gaara trys to transform he gets hit with the chidori. During the fight, the sand ninja and Orochimaru attack Konoha, and the Chunin selection exams concludes with a bang. As Sasuke is pursuing Gaara, Temari, and Kankuro, Shikamaru, Sakura, and Naruto, with the help of Pakkun, are pursuing Sasuke
