This is a very nice book, another amazing collection of (anti)poems and visual artefactos by Parra.

Remarkable translation of Liz Werner.

This is an english edition, but since some of these poems have not appeared previously, this book will also be a must-have for Parra followers in the spanish community. But even for old poems, is a very interesting experience to read the antipoems in a different language and to see them find their way in the intricacies of each language. It is necessary to say, however, that in the introduction Werner clearly states that Parra thinks that these are not really translations, because antipoems cannot be translated, so these are rewrittings. But probably the best possible ones.

Parra style, for those that have not heard about him, is better understood by reading it than by using descriptions:

TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT

To make a long story short
I leave all my possessions
to the Municipal Slaughterhouse
to the Special Forces Unit of the Police Department
to Lucky Dog Lotto

So now if you want you can shoot

This book is truly magnificent. Parra has one of the most clever minds in poetry today. His antipoems are very attractive as they move away from the old traditional poetic style. I understand Parra will be proposed for the Literature Nobel Prize next year (2001). I couldn't agree more.

There are a wide variety of translations here; in both quality and fidelity to the original spanish. The fact that the poems are presented with both the original and the translation makes this book worth it. The Miller Williams and William Carlos Williams translations are wonderful, but some translations, like those by Ginsberg suffer from perhaps too much beat aesethetic co-oped into the work. Still, Parra is wonderful, full of grit and strange images; yet the Spanish, aside from a few words that are only found in Chilean Spanish, is clear and easy to read. I have even translated some of these poems myself. This is amazing work.

A Full Frontal Assault on Poetry

Review Date: 2001-06-20
Theodor Adorno claimed that to write poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric. If so, then Parra is the one man who can justifiably escape the charge of barbarity. What Parra writes is nothing less than a full-scale assault on poetry, or as he calls it, "anti-poetry". Parra's work stands in violation of everything that poetry has ever been. If you are used to lyricism and poetic embellishment and will accept nothing less, you will hate this book. Either that, or it will revolutionize how you see the poetic art. Parra is for poetry what the WWF is for entertainment: it is raw, crass and, as people say, "in your face". It is also brilliant. It is not poetry, but it is, in its own unique way, poetic. And like much of the best poetry always has been, it is immersed in life. Its themes are those we all recognize: crooked police, pestering grandchildren, the morning alarm. It expresses for us what we would all like to express but do not or will not. I suppose one could call it catharsis through anti-art. And perhaps in our post-holocaust world, the most genuine art IS anti-art.

This is it, this is where poetry had to go after its many incarnations and its eventual and fateful death. Parra takes (knowingly or unwittingly) Derrida's concept of differrance and uses it to sledge hammer away his words into his `antipoems'. You'll find no Byron in his pages, or even any Cummings, not to mention any particular style per se. There's so much experimenting -and simplifying- with the word here one doesn't know what one is reading anymore... poems? random (though coherent within themselves) thoughts on paper? cooking recipes? jokes? straightforward reflections on banal life? political commentary?.. yes, all of this.

If there is anything `anti' here is anti-boredom, each `piece' jumps out of the page with offhand easiness, and pomposity is reduced to the reader's own dull lack of imagination. Parra does so much away with droll academic stodginess and allows the invigorating flow of his... expressive, often hilarious and profound, communications; for it is this in the end that comes through -to which anyone at any reading level can enjoy. There are even some `poems' done in a cool artwork-doodle style. What a stimulating and inspired work of art.

An Extraordinary Tale that Keeps the Brain and Pulse Racing
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-10
Arturo el Rey is a superbly conceived tale in which a futuristic plot of biochemical warfare kicks into reverse, colliding with the Arthurian Age. Penned by Joan Upton Hall, the story begins in Texas in 2011. The opening pages crackle with tension, as readers are ushered into a world where a deadly virus has reduced what is left of mankind to killing each other to survive.

While violent gangs struggle for control, Arturo Reyes and his band of outcasts try to defend and unite the innocent. Art's inner struggles include haunting visions of his death as well as a puzzling sense he has a purpose--and perhaps some connection to King Arthur.

Joan Hall has a masterful grip on the ins and outs of her complex plot and whips the action along at a brisk pace. This is what keeps you turning the pages of Arturo el Rey faster and faster--it is such a great story. But Joan Upton Hall is also a wonderful student of human nature and her characters are compellingly drawn.

The flipping of a genre is a fantastic way to create something fresh and interesting in a book or movie. Arturo el Rey features classic elements of the horror, thriller, fantasy and romance genres--giving the author the chance to raise the level of drama in a myriad of different ways. Tense and gripping, Arturo el Rey is an extraordinary tale that keeps both the brain and pulse racing.

You will definately reread this!

Not only is this the BEST book I have read this year, but it is a book I will read again and again! This book is actually several books rolled into one! You have your horror story, you have your thriller, you have your fantasy and most importantly you have your love story.

Arturo El Rey is the story of Arturo Reyes, a marine. Who up until now, the biggest problem he has had is a childhood bully named Eddie Reeves. However, in the not so distant future of 2010 our world has been nuked, and terrorists have released a plague that has wiped out an enormous chunk of the population. We first meet Arturo and his ragtag band of misfits trying to defend a hospital, and still marines in 2011. In another part of the area we meet Shanna Cranston and her father Richard, who holds a Phd. in agriculture. He starts his own group to lead them to a station he had started years ago as an agricultural experiment. Flash forward a few years and San Antonio is now a jungle, but Arturo and his band of buddies is still together and trying to make a better life for themselves, but Arturo is having nightmares that include visions of King Arthur and of his death.

Arturo and his band stay in Texas and soon cross paths with his childhood enemy,Eddie Reeves, who believes his ruined life is all the fault of Arturo, and will stop at nothing to not only take the woman that Arturo now has, Gloria, but ruin Arturo's life in the process. What ensues is a guy that just won't give up, or die for that matter.

Arturo decides to head for the compound and soon meets and falls in love with young Shannon, after saving her from one of his followers. After having been there awhile, Arturo leaves and decides to start his own colony, with the help of an old teacher, Nilson, from his neighborhood, who has been surviving in a library. However, the visions still haunt him, and when he is nearly killed by Eddie Reeves, the visions return and show him that he may well be the true reincarnated King Arthur, and Nilson, his Merlin. When he survives he believes he can feel Excalibur in his hand. People begin to call him Arturo El Rey, Arthur the King, and laws are set in place and New Camelot sees life taking a turn for the better. But somewhere out there an old enemy, despite having lost an ear and a hand, is seething and waiting til the day he can take it all away from him. Is he King Arthur? Is the lovely Shanna his Lady Quinevere? Is history destined to repeat itself? BUY THIS BOOK, you will be glad you did! It will definately be one of your favorites for years to come.

In San Antonio, Texas in 2011, Marine Cpl. Art Reys witnesses the end of any organized government or help from anywhere as a deadly virus pluges Earth into global chaos.
People hide from armed bands, scavenging to survive and finding shelter wherever they can. Armed gangs kill to get food, weapons, and gas for their motorcycles.
Art and his friends protect the helpless wherever they can and make enemies as well as friends as others join them for protection.
Art's heart aches and he has puzzling deja vu flashs of his past life as King Arthur.
As mankind hides like animals or becomes slaves to survive, Shanna Cranston and her father make their way to a compound protected by a high rock face to settle.
When Art and his friends find a group of people hiding in an abandoned library near New Braumfels, Art is reunited with John Nilson, his seventh grade teacher ad mentor. Nilson was Merlin in a past life and it becomes obvious as they work to help others, that Art is King Arthur brought back to restore order.

Can Art continue building his safe and democratic kindgdon? Can he hold fast to his code of ethics? Can he win Shanna Cranston to be his Queen?
Joan Upton Hall's well drawn characters and realistic scenes give us page turnng entetainment; Arturo el Rey and Shanna give us hope for peace as they capture our hearts.

A fantasy-adventure novel to give Stephen King competition!!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-30
This fantasy-adventure novel should give best selling authors like Stephen King heavy competition. Fantastically interwoven with elements of King Arthur's realm, including a little Arthurian romance, Arturo el Rey will keep the reader captivated.

The main character, Art Reyes, escapes gang life and joins the Marines - but when terrorists release the devastating plague, there was no government left to for him to serve. Survival of mankind is tentative at best, due to the drugged-up gangs of angry, distraught people attacking defenseless plague survivors. Brutality and recklessness have reduced the number of women, preserved food is dwindling, fuel is sparse while life-saving and pain-killing drugs are being consumed by stressed out survivors at an alarming rate.

One safe haven is created by a ruthless man who rules with an iron fist. In the meantime, Art struggles to find meaning in the haunting dreams that leave him with a feeling he has a purpose to fulfill. As he strives to find some balance between surviving the elements and violence and retaining freedom, Art accidentally discovers himself. Thrown into the position of leader and possibly the savior of civilization, Art battles rivalries and evil men.

I can quite safely say this is one of the better books that I have ever read. Joan Hall kept me captivated from page one and on. I felt torn when I had to set the book down and deal with life! An excellent read that I heartily recommend to anyone who enjoys the adventure and fantasy genre.

This is arguably the most important book of the last 10 years.
and it takes huge courage to present this argument in the face of such establishment criticism. After all, look at how much Linus Pauling had to endure for his belief in Ascorbate and he was one of the most prominent scientists of his generation. Have times changed? NO, the establishment is still in control of our health and the statistics prove that they are doing an atrocious job.

ALL of the major dis-eases are increasing, and the icing on the cake is that new ones are emerging all the time. The time is now to take responsibility for your (and the childrens) health and nowhere is there a better place to start than with this fantastic book on Vitamin C. To finish heres a quote from Drs Emanuel Cheraskin, Marshall Ringsdorf and Emily Sisley

"There are more than TEN THOUSAND published SCIENTIFIC papers that make it quite clear that there is NOT ONE body process
(such as what goes on inside cells or tissues) and NOT ONE disease or syndrome (from the common cold to leprosy) that is not influenced - directly or indirectly - by Vitamin C"

If thats not enough to persuade you to learn about it then nothing will

The latest authoratative story on vitamin C
Helpful Votes: 37 out of 37 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-24
What a well written, courageous book this is. Courageous because the authors, two professors of medicine, explain in laymen's terms, exactly how science is incorporated into medical practice, and how mistakes and bias get filtered into the mix. After making this clear, they follow the vitamin C story from the very beginning and demonstrate exactly how medical science developed a "bizarre" and illogical pet hate for vitamin C, Pauling and all his disciples. (and ignored apparent benefits)

This will not endear them at all to the tightly knit medical profession, but is a distinct service to the public.

In an honest and fair approach, with no unscientific exaggeration of evidence, the authors explain both sides of the vitamin c "controversy" which wouldn't have been very controversial at all if larger doses had been tried.

They also explode the sacredness of the "large, randomized, double blind, clinical trial" and clearly show how silly it is to deny patients a GRAS (generally recognized as safe) treatment, shown to provide huge benefits, on the flimsy excuse that no large scale trial was performed. Clinical trials should be refuted or replicated to allow science to advance. Phony excuses do not advance science.

All the latest findings are here from Cathcart, Cameron, Riordan, Hoffer and other doctors on the leading edge of ascorbate therapy.

The vitamin C deficiency theory of heart disease, developed by Pauling and Rath, is analyzed and updated, and the latest cancer treatment methods are given.

This is a very important book that has the potential to save hundreds of thousands of lives, it should be placed in the libraries of every school in the country.

An Honest Bombshell

Utterly honest, easy to understand, "Ascorbate, The Science of Vitamin C" is a real treasure. The difference between a small anti-scurvy intake of vitamin C, a few milligrams per day, and a therapeutic dose of 10 grams or more per day is made crystal clear.
The complete lack of evidence for the RDA set by the FDA is revealed. The rapid elimination of vitamin C was shown graphically, thus the folly in the persistent use of multi-gram oral doses by inept researchers was exposed. Small doses must be taken orally, maybe every hour, to keep serum levels up. The increase in serum levels obtainable with injected, not oral, sodium ascorbate, the usual non-acidic salt of vitamin C, also called ascorbic acid, is explained well.
The flaws in the published studies intended to debunk the usefulness of vitamin C from The Mayo Clinic and The Heart Protection Study in the UK are spelled out in detail. Wrong doses, wrong dosage forms, mismatched control patients, etc., all combined to fail to prove that vitamin C is not effective in treating cancer or cardiovascular disease. The problems with these studies and others is explained in great detail, and you will be able to follow the reasoning of the authors.
Then it is less of a shock to learn that vitamin C can cure polio and prolong lifespan for those with AIDS and cancer, among other conditions. The studies by Pauling and Cameron on vitamin C for cancer believed invalid by mainstream medicine, were, in fact, as well done as was ethically practical, and were confirmed by unrelated researchers.
My only gripes with this book are the incompetent chemistry on page 63 and some of the explanations of ordinary chemical reactions. Neither hydroxyl radical nor hydroxide ion plus an electron will give water as shown. Neither charges nor atoms are balanced or accounted for. Many disease states were said to be caused by the presence too many free radicals without enough direct evidence or identification of which free radicals.
That done, my opinion is that this book should be required reading by a very wide audience. Referencing is done to a very high standard. The next edition should be superb.

Ever wonder how wild animals like rabbits, squirrels, deer, etc. can live outside in cold weather and not catch colds while we humans routinely catch colds living in our warm dry houses? The answer is surprisingly simple: animals don't catch colds, or get any of a host of other illnesses which plaque humans, because most animals manufacture vitamin C every day and we humans don't. That's right, almost all animals except humans manufacture vitamin C in their bodies every day and they manufacture a lot of it -- a typical animal manufactures 20 mg of vitamin C every day for every pound it weighs. An animal weighing as much as a 150 lb. human would manufacture at least 3,000 mg of vitamin C daily and humans need about this much vitamin C too. But the government, and most physicians, tell us humans that we only need about 60 to 90 mgs of vitamin C daily. 60 to 90 mgs of vitamin C daily isn't enough vitamin C to keep a typical cat healthy, and is far short of what adult humans need. No wonder we humans catch colds in the winter and suffer from a variety of other ailments all year long. Fortunately some humans recognize the importance of vitamin C and take it as a supplement every day. Those who don't take supplemental vitamin C should do so, for a variety of health reasons which this excellent book discusses.

Books that discuss unconventional treatments often confront allopathic medicine and accuse it of conspiracy against the health of humanity. The topic of vitamin C is controversial and can easily be turned into the same old fight between the so called medical establishment and progressive allopaths.

I, however, was pleasantly surprised by this book. The facts regarding vitamin C are presented in a solid and ethical way. There is no unjustified claims, only well researched facts. There are more than five hundred references at the end of this text.

The authors are concentrating on application of ascorbate in "big three": infections, atherosclerosis and cancer, their prevention and treatment. They present biochemical basis for the action of ascorbate in each of these conditions, then results of animal experiments, followed by data from human trials. They draw very distinct line between the dosses needed for nutritional supplementation - i.e. to aviod the developments of scurvy - and pharmacological, or megadoses, that may be used to treat advanced conditions. Pharmacokinetics and toxicity of ascorbate is also well discussed.

I am a medical doctor, and enjoyed reading this book. It is well written and would be interesting for wide audience. I agree that vitamin C may have the potential for treatment of numerous medical conditions and there should be more research on it.

I learned at school that cigarrete smokiing kills and my mom smokes all day!
I told it to my teacher, and she gave me this book and wished me luck !
Next weekend, I hugged mom and gave her the book with a pretty ribbon...
She sat to read...and at the end of the book, she just cried and cried.
I cried too when she swore she would never smoke again..
I AM HAPPY !
If one of your parents smokes and you are worried, give her or him this book..
It's pure magic!

Excellent book on an admirable Latin American metropolis!

I have always been interested in Latin America, particularly when its regarding it's metropolises. The sheer economic, social, and cultural contrasts these metropolises display is exciting and appealing to me, more so due to my interest in politics, sociology, and economics.

However, Buenos Aires: El Escenario Urbano is an excellent book depicting Buenos Aires in all its dimensions. It covers this amazing South American capital in all angles and points of views. It's well balanced giving the reader glimpses of what life is like for the denizens of Buenos Aires, while at the same time it does not neglects some of the urban social/economic problems the city faces. Despite this, the problems are presented in such a way that its not depressing at all! The author is truly impressive in his way of accomplishing such a well rounded book of a metropolis worth discovering.

The photos are incredible!

This book is a perfect introduction to anyone planning to visit Buenos Aires, anyone who lives in Buenos Aires, or anyone who simply likes to travel from the comfort of a couch and simply let the imagination do the work by reading about other places on earth!

I hope Sebastian Letemendia starts a series of "El Escenario Urbano" about other Latin American metropolises such as Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Santo Domingo, Caracas, and others.

A rare view of Buenos Aires, from an insider's perspective. Having read a number of books on Buenos Aires, it seems that many authors only think of La Recoleta and Palermo as the only interesting places in Buenos Aires. Mr. Letemendia shows his readers the beaty and complexities of a great city. A great read.

Great book, but English text comes as addendum at the end

We bought this book as a gift to an English-only speaker, but to our regret, we are returning it, because the English part of the book comes as an addendum at the end of the book. It would be great if it is published with Spanish and English side by side.

A Captivating View of Buenos Aires!!

Once again, Mr. Letemendia produces a powerful book which immediately pulls the reader in. The photographs are outstanding! They represent not only the beauty of the city, but also a feeling for how people live in the city. In addition to being an exceptional photographer, Mr. Letemendia is also a talented writer. His portrayal of the city's history and development give the reader an understanding of and appreciation for the complexity of Buenos Aires. I have never been to Buenos Aires yet now I feel I know it. The book is a great enticement to visit Buenos Aires. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it!

Buenos Aires revealed in a great book!

If you like - or think you might like - Buenos Aires, then this is a book worth having. As opposed to the typical great picture approach that makes every place look like paradise, the author's photographs reflect the city as it really is, balancing the typical beautiful views with others that depict every day life and even less pleasant ones that also form part of every city.

At the same time, the author explains in very ammenable text, how and why Buenos Aires got to be what it is, thoroughly analyzing in each chapter a different component of the city's life.

This beautifully assembled combination of text and pictures conveys a very truthfull and wholesome idea of Buenos Aires.

Worth buying and keeping!

awesome, but old

hey, I know that this book is awesome, but is old too, the reality of Brazil is not that anymore, some people tend to form opinions about things that they don't know, that they have never seem with their own eyes. But the best thing is that it still is a really interesting novel, and if you read you won't forget, it is just the best book I ever read.

Simply the best book I've read this year

I would recommend this book to anyone as an absolute must read. I read it in the original Portuguese at the suggestion of a friend and if you have the ability, I suggest you do the same. The translation simply doesn't portray the magnificence and beauty of Amado's original. After living in Brazil for sometime, this novel is, to me, the most incredible portrayal of these youth and the circumstances in which they live. The book may be 70 years old, but it is certainly as applicable today as anything else I've read.

If you've read them all, read this!

It is absolutely magnificant. This is the first time for me writing a book review online and I thought that I'd never do it, but after I saw that there's is copy out there somewhere I had to say that 69$ is nothing for this book. It is the only book I take along when I travel or move abroad. It is the book that can change your life, or atleast bring that special something to it. Now that I'm reading this through I have this funny feeling that it's not me writing, but from time to time you come across extraordinary matters that make you act in a very peculiar way. This is one them. Don't miss it.

Timeless protrayal of Brazil's Poverty

Review Date: 2002-01-30
Amado's literary output falls rather neatly into two periods. His early work is imbued with a strong sense of social responsibility, a fact for which he had some difficulty under the Vargas regime, and I believe he may have even done a short stint in jail over. The second period, the post-"Gabriela" books, are a lot more laid back and anecdotal.

Sorry to say that in general the second period is the one that's more fun to read, and the books he wrote in the second half of his life are what established his international reputation. A lot of his earlier stuff is not that great, with one exception - this book.

The story is about the kids on the street in Fortaleza, back in the 1930's. To say that they're poor doesn't do justice to it - they live on the street. By necessity they're thieves, but you can't help liking them. They have aspirations of their own in life.

Explaining it in a few words like that may make the American reader think that he's dealing with some "Angels with Dirty Faces" sort of story. It's not. This is not a sentimental novel. It's a reflection of some of the hard realities of Brazilian life, like the urban poverty that never seems to disappear. But it also reflects some of the inherent optimism and the very un-American concern with each other that Brazilians manifest - features of their society that make Brazil such a wonderful place.

It really touches your heart

This has to be the best book Jorge Amado has ever written. It was the first book of his that I ever read, it touched me so deeply, that I have read almost all his books since. It really lets you know about the poverty in Brasil, and what some people would do for money. Every character and every story in the novel makes sense. It touches my heart to see what some kids go through, not only in Brasil but in the whole world. As a proud Brasilian myself, It made me think a lot about the poverty in my country. The love story is also so romantic and sad. It's simply just the best book that I have ever read.
