This classic text is simply the best. It's great for an undergraduate nursing pharmacology course, and it's also good as a review prior to advanced pharmacology for NPs. The text is well organized and gives a solid but not overly technical treatment of pharmacology. Definitely a must have for any nurse!

Although many nursing students would cringe at the thought of taking pharmacology, this text actually makes it easy. The author inserts many humorous comments throughout the text while making the necessary presented information easily readable and understandable. The included disc provides students with thought-provoking questions that test knowledge on each chapter. An excellent text overall.

Although I just started the Pharmacology class, this book has been very beneficial in helping me understand the concepts of pharmacology. I would also recommend the Lipincott or Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses 10ed. book to facilitate learning. So far the class has been pretty rough, so beware.

Pharm was definitely my hardest subject during nursing school. I had a hard time keeping all the drug classes straight, but this incredible textbook gave me the exact tools I needed to understand the drugs. With Lehne's sense of humor (in chapter 1 she writes a note to the "chemophobes" - those of us who are scared of chemistry class!) makes this text book interesting and easy to read.

I had another text for my pre-nursing pharmacology class, and after suffering through it, found this one. Even though I had already finished the class, I bought this and read it cover to cover. It's worth it. Not a lot of details on the chemistry, but it's great for the practicioner who needs the practical information. The background parts that discuss physiology and some chem are excellent to keep things in context.

Excellent textbook. It reads like a novel, and Dr. Gordis presents the material in a way that is easy to follow. I got the previous version of the book at our bookstore discounted because it was used, only to find that several pages were missing, and the previous owner's highlights were terrible.

The visual material of this book (graphs and charts) are much better in this version, and they're in COLOR!

Review Date: 2008-01-10
This was a required text for my introductory epidemiology course. I have had an interest in epi for a number of years and approached the book with a fair amount of skepticism, especially given its relatively small size. After reading the first few chapters I found Gordis's writing style to be dry and too convoluted for otherwise simple topics. Saying this, halfway through the semester I really warmed up to the book and the author's subtle humor. The sections on odds ratios and matched/unmatched case-control studies were explained so well that I had a eureka moment that I had hoped for prior to taking my first USMLE step. For an introductory book, it covers with perfect detail the basic methods and principles of epidemiology and provides elegant descriptions of the applications to both clinical medicine and public health. The illustrations offer great clarity to the theory and I have already referenced them on many occasions during other courses and while reading journal articles. It will remain on my shelf until the next edition is released.

It points out the typical weakness assessment and followup training that most companies do to build their employees weaknesses. They basically ignore strengths. When in reality they should concentrate on one anothers' strengths. Their surveys found the likelihood of an employee leaving after getting a job that fits their strengths dropped by 50%. Most companies don't seem to understand this and fear it. It really struck a chord with me and I wish the consulting industry would consider it.

You can assess your own strenghts with their approach as well in 14 categories.

First published in 1981 and written by Loren B. Belker, the current (5th) edition has been updated by Gary S. Topchik in 2005

I very much like the style in which the book is written - easy and conversational. I also like the complete absence of "management speak" which is such a rarity in many modern management books. The book is also written in a very positive tone - looking to help the manager to motivate, develop and get the best out of people rather than controlling them.

However, this book is an enigma. It has some great management truths, ideas and concepts that have stood the test of time, yet it falls down in how some of these can best be implemented. Three that I found difficulty with were the chapters on Recruitment, Managing Change and Performance Appraisals.

For example, in the chapter on Recruitment, the authors suggest that the most important point to keep in mind when recruiting someone, is to make sure they have the right attitude. Most people would agree with this, yet the three questions they suggest to use to test for "attitude", i.e.

- What did you like most about your last job?
- What did you like least about your last job?
- How do you feel about your last manager?

do not measure attitude. Unfortunately, neither do these type of question assess a person's ability to do the job for which they are applying. The authors do give examples of "right" and "wrong" answers which I found, particularly in the case of the "wrong" answers to be over simplistic and unlikely to be given by many applicants.

In some chapters there were also sample "speeches" (or "talks" as the authors call them) for various events such as when the new employee starts, the "Attitude Talk" or the "Improvement Seed" for discussing a person's poor performance. In any book this is a difficult concept to describe and get across. I think the authors could have improved these sample talks by giving more detail on their purpose, the key points to include (or avoid) and how to follow up these talks.

This book is a light read and may be a useful primer for a very new and inexperienced manager. However, it should be augmented with books that are just as practical, have more depth and have more "how to's" which are essential for people just starting out in management.

I bought this book for an upcoming management interview. Having never managed anyone before, I was desperate to at least sound like I knew what I was getting into. I found it very easy to read and informative. It certainly gives you an overview of the different employee personalities and challenges a manager will face, and how to properly deal with specific situations. I would highly recommend it to anyone who was just promoted into management or going on an interview. The vocabulary, legal awareness chapter, and proper conflict resolution exercises were of great help. All in all a great tool to start your training as a manager or "manager-wanna-be".

Relax, IMG is only missing from the first printing

FYI: the IMG tag is only missing from the first printing. (I asked O'Reilly.) Indeed, a recent copy of the book is not missing it anymore. (Back of the title page, bottom right corner has a date: [11/04]. My other copy, which is missing IMG, has [6/02] in this spot.) A quick check shows that they have fixed some, but not all, of the errata (http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/htmlpr2/errata/).

But this book is still totally worth having. It's small enough to leave lying around the desktop, where its big brother (Definitive Guide) would get in the way (not to mention distort gravity from its sheer mass). If you're reading this review, you obviously feel you could use a quick reference to HTML. This is it.

They lowered the price, too: These things used to cost 12.95. Now, 9.95. "Buy It Now!"

Definately a time saver!

There may be a few errors, like the missing tag, but the errata list on the O'Reilly site has the information posted. The rest of the book is so good that I'm fine with plugging in the missing information myself. I love how it's set up as one big alphabetical list of tags. It makes it so easy to find what you want. I have been using it lately to check tags for browser compatibility. Saves so much time to quick turn to a page in this small book, rather than search big books or websites for compatibility info!

Must Have Pocket Reference

Review Date: 2004-04-20
If you are designing web pages, you must have this book. That is all there is to it.

This is a small compact reference book (hence the title) which lists the HTML tags in alphabetical order, shows if they are supported by the three major browsers (IE,NN,Opera) and if they are part of the w3c spec HTML 4.01. Information is given for the applicable attributes for each tag.

Once you know it (especially if you follow w3c standards) HTML is a simple and easy language to use.. however, having a easy to use reference comes in handy quite frequently, especially when starting up a new site.

This will not be the only reference you need.. no book can claim that. Though everybody who designs websites should have this book, those new to HTML may find it the most helpful most frequently. However, this book will NOT teach you HTML. It is a reference.. nothing more.

as mentioned in other reviews.. the IMG tag is missing, which is a major flaw, but not major enough to take away from the greatness of this book.

In short.. get it.

I am generally a fan of Pocket References. But this one seems poorly debugged. One example is claiming "align" is deprecated for <td>. Turns out, this bug has made it onto the Errata page for the book

http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/htmlpr2/errata/ ,

but only under "Unconfirmed error reports and comments from readers." If you write a buggy book, at least do the work to confirm bugs and fix them in new printings!

Evan Marc Katz has created a warm, witty, inviting book that brilliantly describes pearls and pitfalls of online dating. He discusses the sensitive emotional and interpersonal issues' dating online imposes on singles, and offers practical suggestions and compassionate support. This book is an invaluable resource for those singles dating online. If you want to laugh out loud while learning about online dating, it is a must read!
(My professional opinion)

However, I'm single, over 35, and while this book was a gift, I haven't laughed this hard about basic dating skills in a long time. I read it because Evan Marc Katz was actually my gift (too bad for all of you that only got the book). Seriously, Evan's coaching was a present to me from a friend who thought I needed a little assistance finding love online. After working with Evan, I realized all the little things really do matter. He taught me that in a game of numbers, you have to stand out otherwise you may not get noticed by the people you want. The book is educational to anyone with an open mind, and who isn't jaded and cynical simply because they are over 35 and not yet married. I highly recommend it.

If you buy this book, you may very well end up hitting yourself over the head with something near at hand (probably the book itself) and exclaiming "I can't believe I bought this book!" Luckily, the worthless book in question is also mercifully brief and bound in paper, so hopefully you will do no more than emotional damage to your psyche. That's about the only positive thing you will be able to say about the experience of either reading or hitting yourself over the head with this book. The written contents are a mix of the amazingly obvious and the horribly shallow and sexist. A good book on organic gardening is more likely to help you attract a romantic partner.

An excellent resource.

This is one of the rare books I intend to read again just to make sure everything sinks in. Anyway I have been heeding his advice and there is no greater proof that it works than by the results I have been having...CUTE women contacting me and responding to me. This book is wonderful because it does not force
its opinion down your throat, and uses examples
of real-life people to show how we as humans can
connect with one another(and how societal expectations
often lead us not to connect with the people we so
despearately need to).

I also love how Dr. Lerner says that it is important
to separate the 'I' from the 'we.' This is one
of the few books that I have absolutely nothing bad to
say about it. Read through this book SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY,
then put it down for a year, and then read it again,
SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY.

Also, for anyone else, this makes a wonderful Christmas
present. Great book to read around the fire when it's
too cold to go outside or even a great book to read
during the summer.

Go, no run to the bookstore and buy as many copies of this
book as you can. My copy is so worn I plan to buy another
one really soon. This book does more justice for dysfunctional
family relationships than therapy, junk food and even Dr. Phil.

Highly recommended, especially for women with complicated
relationships with their parents.

My therapist recommended this book to me, and that recommendation was worth the value all of my therapy sessions combined. I've learned a lot about myself and my relationships- both in my family and in romantic relationships. I am motivated to make changes in the way I relate to the world, and I owe it (at least 50%) to this book. The best part is, I sent this book to my sister and now she is gaining a better understanding of herself as well and we are trying to help each other. If all I get out of this book is a better relationship with my sister, that will be more than enough. But I know I'm getting more.

Realistically, it never answered the question raised by the title. It offers no guidance in getting value from LinkedIn that doesn't appear within LinkedIn itself. It offers no road map for maximizing the potential of LinkedIn and often addresses points in a circular fashion.

I cannot recommend this publication to anyone at any price.

A great book and I was already a big fan of Darren Rowse and his blog. He is a very successful pro blogger, a fine example to follow and learn from and having the 2 perspectives - different backgrounds, both end up at pro blogging and both very successful - is very effective. The book is easy to follow, written for anyone who even hasn't the basics of technology down, and has a reasonably good flow. I just wish it covered the tricks of the trade in much more depth, with examples, case studies, personal experience, and tips that you do not find anywhere else. It was a bit general for me. I am still glad I read it.

I purchase this book for an online class and the price I got was $12 better than at the university bookstore!

Finally...an easy-to-read nursing textbook!!

I absolutely love this book. It is so much easier to read than any of the other 50 or so textbooks I have weighing down my bookshelves.

I don't know if it's the un-fussy writing style, or the abundance of pictures that make it more interesting than others like it, but I will say that for once, I do not dread my reading assignments.

Thanks for such an interesting book!
(When I start my career, I will upgrade to the next edition for sure)

After reading another review, I discovered a CD may not be part of the book I purchased. This is not good. The CD is part of the learning process and allows the student to assimilate the learnings from the book with the CD information. Also, I paid for 1 day fed. express shipping and the book did not arrive on the date expected.

This book does have good layout by using seperate chapters for the different systems and has abnormal findings with pictures in every chapter. But It is not detailed enough. I would sometimes find myself looking for more information because it doesn't go too much farther then describing something briefly. I would like to find a more detailed book but this is the one my nursing class required. And it has no glossary for definition of terms.
