A possible primerReview Date: 2008-06-29
I very much like the style in which the book is written - easy and conversational. I also like the complete absence of "management speak" which is such a rarity in many modern management books. The book is also written in a very positive tone - looking to help the manager to motivate, develop and get the best out of people rather than controlling them.
However, this book is an enigma. It has some great management truths, ideas and concepts that have stood the test of time, yet it falls down in how some of these can best be implemented. Three that I found difficulty with were the chapters on Recruitment, Managing Change and Performance Appraisals.
For example, in the chapter on Recruitment, the authors suggest that the most important point to keep in mind when recruiting someone, is to make sure they have the right attitude. Most people would agree with this, yet the three questions they suggest to use to test for "attitude", i.e.
- What did you like most about your last job?
- What did you like least about your last job?
- How do you feel about your last manager?
do not measure attitude. Unfortunately, neither do these type of question assess a person's ability to do the job for which they are applying. The authors do give examples of "right" and "wrong" answers which I found, particularly in the case of the "wrong" answers to be over simplistic and unlikely to be given by many applicants.
In some chapters there were also sample "speeches" (or "talks" as the authors call them) for various events such as when the new employee starts, the "Attitude Talk" or the "Improvement Seed" for discussing a person's poor performance. In any book this is a difficult concept to describe and get across. I think the authors could have improved these sample talks by giving more detail on their purpose, the key points to include (or avoid) and how to follow up these talks.
This book is a light read and may be a useful primer for a very new and inexperienced manager. However, it should be augmented with books that are just as practical, have more depth and have more "how to's" which are essential for people just starting out in management.

Relax, IMG is only missing from the first printingReview Date: 2006-01-18
But this book is still totally worth having. It's small enough to leave lying around the desktop, where its big brother (Definitive Guide) would get in the way (not to mention distort gravity from its sheer mass). If you're reading this review, you obviously feel you could use a quick reference to HTML. This is it.
They lowered the price, too: These things used to cost 12.95. Now, 9.95. "Buy It Now!"

Must Have Pocket ReferenceReview Date: 2004-04-20
This is a small compact reference book (hence the title) which lists the HTML tags in alphabetical order, shows if they are supported by the three major browsers (IE,NN,Opera) and if they are part of the w3c spec HTML 4.01. Information is given for the applicable attributes for each tag.
Once you know it (especially if you follow w3c standards) HTML is a simple and easy language to use.. however, having a easy to use reference comes in handy quite frequently, especially when starting up a new site.
This will not be the only reference you need.. no book can claim that. Though everybody who designs websites should have this book, those new to HTML may find it the most helpful most frequently. However, this book will NOT teach you HTML. It is a reference.. nothing more.
as mentioned in other reviews.. the IMG tag is missing, which is a major flaw, but not major enough to take away from the greatness of this book.
In short.. get it.

(My professional opinion)
However, I'm single, over 35, and while this book was a gift, I haven't laughed this hard about basic dating skills in a long time. I read it because Evan Marc Katz was actually my gift (too bad for all of you that only got the book). Seriously, Evan's coaching was a present to me from a friend who thought I needed a little assistance finding love online. After working with Evan, I realized all the little things really do matter. He taught me that in a game of numbers, you have to stand out otherwise you may not get noticed by the people you want. The book is educational to anyone with an open mind, and who isn't jaded and cynical simply because they are over 35 and not yet married. I highly recommend it.

Bravo Dr. LernerReview Date: 2007-12-21
This, as well as all her books, should be required reading by all high school classes. Maybe we could have a different outcome from our future citizens.

the only self-help book you'll ever needReview Date: 2007-06-20
its opinion down your throat, and uses examples
of real-life people to show how we as humans can
connect with one another(and how societal expectations
often lead us not to connect with the people we so
despearately need to).
I also love how Dr. Lerner says that it is important
to separate the 'I' from the 'we.' This is one
of the few books that I have absolutely nothing bad to
say about it. Read through this book SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY,
then put it down for a year, and then read it again,
SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY.
Also, for anyone else, this makes a wonderful Christmas
present. Great book to read around the fire when it's
too cold to go outside or even a great book to read
during the summer.
Go, no run to the bookstore and buy as many copies of this
book as you can. My copy is so worn I plan to buy another
one really soon. This book does more justice for dysfunctional
family relationships than therapy, junk food and even Dr. Phil.
Highly recommended, especially for women with complicated
relationships with their parents.

I picked up Jason's book because I wanted to get the most out of my LinkedIn experience from the beginning. I found the book to be very helpful. It gives comprehensive coverage of LinkedIn with lots of tips for navigating through the system and avoiding potential pitfalls.
I would recommend it for anyone looking to start networking through LinkedIn.

Not worthy of purchaseReview Date: 2008-05-27
Realistically, it never answered the question raised by the title. It offers no guidance in getting value from LinkedIn that doesn't appear within LinkedIn itself. It offers no road map for maximizing the potential of LinkedIn and often addresses points in a circular fashion.
I cannot recommend this publication to anyone at any price.

I don't know if it's the un-fussy writing style, or the abundance of pictures that make it more interesting than others like it, but I will say that for once, I do not dread my reading assignments.
Thanks for such an interesting book!
