Best book for Medical Pharmacology

This book by far is the BEST pharm book out there for medical students. The book is easy to read and helps reinforce important concepts with ALOT of graphs and cartoons. I have this book, Katzung's Board&Review Pharm, and Lippincott's Pharm, and I feel like this book is the best for course work. It's overkill for board study, so I'll be using Katzung for that. Lippincott's is by far the worst, as there are TONS of mistakes in the book. So if you are a medical student looking for a great book for your pharmacology COURSE (again, not for board study), you cannot go wrong with this book.

I found this book particularly useful for the clinical practioner. Just to make it clearer I am one of the translators working on the brazilian version. I received only the chapters I translated, but I liked the text so much that I purchased the original just not to have to wait for the brazilian publication.

This book is going to save me a lot of money on books for myself and for my son, his cousins, now and probably when it is time to start buying college books too. It's a very thorough manual with helpful glossaries, abbreviatin guides, and some very good advice for finding the online booksellers most likely to provide good customer service. It's also enjoyable to read and it is obvious that the author has a great sense of humor, loves books, and understands what drives people to buy them.

Buying books is much more enjoyable and much more affordable now than it was in years past for many reasons. The prices of new books online are lower than in traditional bookstores. There is less overhead in an online bookstore. Also, in additon to new books, many online bookstores sell used books which can be priced much lower than a new book. Also, many books are OOP and the used book is the only way to find a copy. The internet has truly opened up a world of books to any interested buyer.

Cecil's textbook of medicine has been my favorite internal medicine textbook since my student years, back in 1991. The newest edition (22) features major changes to the book layout, which is very productive and makes reading, studying and even referencing it very functional.

The new edition features more colours than the previous ones, which are used as text "hyperlinks", referring the reader to other chapters and to online contents. The diagnostic criteria for a specific disease and the treatment are included into specific tables, characteristic of the Cecil textbook. This makes it even easier for the student to memorise and understand!

The new e-dition, includes a bonus cd-rom, which includes all the pics and tables of the textbook. They can be searched, categorised and even exported for powerpoint presentations. Excellent!

Furthermore, the reader gets FREE access to the online version of Cecil, at www.cecilmedicine.com At the website, new discoveries in medicine are included wthi highlighted text into the textbook, therefore the book is constantly updated to the latest medical discoveries and trends. You get to have access to your beloved textbook from any place in the world, without the need of carrying it with you.

In short, the new e-dition of Cecil, is a must for medical students, residents and fellows! Look no further, the best medical reference textbook is here.

A PERENNIAL GIANT; BUT BUY VERSION ACCORDING TO ISBN #

Since I bought my first copy of Cecil's Textbook of Medicine in 1971 - Then, called the Cecil and Loeb's Textbook of Medicine - 13th Edition - this book has been "my Bible" for basic Internal Medicine for many years.

I just purchased the newest edition (22nd): Cecil's Textbook of Medicine with Continually Updated Online Reference. The innovative changes in the new text plus the availability of monthly updates and review cases online make this edition of a perennial giant.

Reviewers of other editions have expressed their views that, compared to the new edition of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine (16th Edition, 2004), Cecil's Textbook presents less comprehensive clinical information and is inundated with basic science data that most readers "should already" know. While I agree that in some chapters the information in Cecil's Textbook is somewhat elemental, the inclusion of basic science material provides cohesiveness to each topic presented. In addition, anyone requiring more detained clinical information can search the literature quoted or choose a specialty book.

I bought this book through Amazon.com's warehouse for $100.00 because the box had been returned as being defective. I have only praise for Amazon.com. I received a brand new book and CD-ROM 4 days after my order inside a slightly bumped box. So besides a great learning system, I got a deal!

Potential buyers should be warned about the difficulty in choosing from the different versions of the 22nd Edition. I strongly recommend you compare the features of each of the versions available and ensure that when you order you are buying the one of your choice according to ISBN numbers and not to description, which I found to be incorrect too often.

Below I provide the purchasing data on the different versions to assit potential buyers to choose which version to buy.

First, I have to commend the Author on writing a book with such a niche audience. This book is directed toward persons interested in seeking out an online counseling, but who desire some more information on how to choose one (as the title suggests).

I was on the other side on the fence, but purchased the book because I wanted to know what Gary (the author) had to say. And I am pleased to say this book delivers. The information within will indeed help a prospective client choose re reputable therapist. The information can also serve as a guide to online therapists, a benchmark of sorts they can use to see if they are up to par :-)

I highly recommend this work.

Final Note: If you're interested in providing telephone and online counseling, this very well done clinical guide will teach you everything you need to know to get started, and be effective: The Therapist's Clinical Guide to Online Counseling and Telephone Counseling: The Definitive Training Guide for Clinical Practice

A Very Useful Little Book

Review Date: 2003-11-20
With our economy still in recovery, people who would benefit from counseling may not get the help they need due to cost. There are other reasons why people may not be able to access in-person therapy -- geographical isolation, disabilities that prevent travel, concern for community status, feelings ashamed or guilty for seeking help, or having social phobia and panic attacks. Online therapy can be a fruitful method of getting assistance for some types of problems. This book is a primer on how to go about doing just that.

The author begins by exploring the ways in which online therapy is different, such as missing non-verbal cues, distance preventing crisis intervention, questions of effectiveness, potential for fraud, and risks to confidentiality. Stolfe then clarifies the types of problems that respond best to online counseling and those that do not. Issues not to be handled online are suicidality, disordered thinking, medical issues related to mental health (such as anorexia nervosa), and borderline personality disorder. The types of problems he suggests for online therapy are related to personal growth and fulfillment, adult children of alcoholics, agoraphobia/anxiety disorders/social phobia, body image issues/problems, and shame/guilt. The chapter includes a table that identifies major areas of trouble and the level of care which best serves them (inpatient, outpatient, online, etc.).

Characteristics of a good therapist are discussed: empathy, compassion, knowledge, credentials, trustworthiness. For online therapy, however, Stolfe suggests additional qualities to consider: experience; an appropriate website with all necessary information; good typing, spelling, and grammar; online savvy and comfort; if the therapist receives supervision; and membership in the ISMHO (International Society of Mental Health Online).

Chapter 4 covers the basic mechanics of online counseling, i.e., the venues (email, chat) and the types of security issues related to them. Guidance for finding a therapist online and the type of fee you can expect to pay are also provided. Following that, Stolfe describes the protocol for the first contact and first appointment. He also explains how to terminate therapy, whether it's due to financial problems, ethical concerns, or is planned (goals have been met).

The last chapters provide information on computer and Internet basics, a computer-buying checklist, online therapy ethics, types of therapy, and online therapy sites and companies.

In all, this small book is densely packed with useful information. Online therapy is likely to grow. If used ethically, it provides another resource for people wanting to improve their lives. This guide will help the potential client in his or her search to find caring and competent service.

There is a serious call being sent to the Church in this hour. It is a critical time for the Church. Many are at the point of decision, destiny and crossroads. Believers are sensing an urgency to become everything God has said they should be.

The message of the Kingdom is the gravitational pull of this generation of the Church and The Costly Anointing is a valuable manual for those who want to bear spiritual fruit that will remain. Kingdom demonstration is impossible without genuine anointing.

Answers! Finally!

This book has been a blessing to me because it sheds light on the anointings of God. It is a book for young and mature Christians alike. Lori begins by giving Biblical examples about the different levels and types of anointing and the ingredients of an anointing. The book goes on to talk about what function the anointing has in the Church as a whole.

I enjoyed it because it gave me a sense of where I was in my commitment to the Lord, and where I need to go spiritually to mature more in the Lord.

If you want to know how to be anointed, or who can carry an anointing, then this book will be a blessing to you.

This is the book I've been searching for! My kids and I both use the Internet, but since they are more adept than I am at web-surfing and chatrooms, I needed to become savvy at heading off the dangers they could encounter. Joan Vos MacDonald provides a much needed map of the terrain, and specifics on how to avoid and deflect trouble. Cybersafety is sensible and respectful of both parents and kids, undermining neither. Now, I can talk to my kids without being alarmist or playing cop, and I also have a better appreciation for their choices and activities on the Net. I highly recommend Cybersafety, especially to read aloud and discuss!

Joan Vos MacDonald has managed to give us web-surfers a much-needed security blanket. She has written an insightful book that makes us aware of the ignorance, and, perhaps, naivete, with which we approach the worldwide web. If any of us assumed that surfing the internet was a secure and, somewhat innocuous, exercise, Cybersafety: Surfing Safely Online has brought our mistaken assumptions to light. This book should be on everyone's MUST READ list, and should make its way to every parents Christmas stocking.

It's been said that quality novels fit into three categories: 1) good novels, 2) very good novels and 3) great novels. A good novel teaches you something. A very good novel both teaches you something and is highly entertaining at the same time. But a great novel does all these things while changing the way you think. In this regard, Days Captive is a great novel.
Written by an American who has spent more than 15 years in foreign countries, Days Captive is told through the first person narration of a British journalist. In doing so, it gives an eye-opening view of how others see America and Americans without resorting to tabloid or trailer park extremes. '...It's a dilemma the rest of us face every time we meet people from the United States,' the main character laments, 'the world is ultimately a better place because of them, but as a country, America does what it wants to do, regardless.' Thoughful prose like this is the hallmark of this book, but its strength lies in the way it shows how the human traits that lie within us all contribute to the very concept of terrorism --- without diminishing or ignoring its evil or blaming the West for everything. In the end we're all to blame, suggests the narrator - and by the end of the book you'll believe it. That's a difficult line to tread yet the author does so beautifully, mixing realism, absurdity and page-turning action into a breathtakingly heady concoction. Equally, through a series of 'articles' and 'op-ed' pieces interspersed at select places in the story, the history of terrorism, its psychology, a look at the world's most notorious terrorist groups and other vital bits of information are artfully presented in a thought-provoking manner.
In summation, this book is for anyone who is NOT interested in sticking his or her head in the sand when it comes to terrorism. You may not agree with everything it says, but its point is that the only way we're ever going to eliminate this killer disease is by getting invloved, identifying its causes and working toward eliminating them rather than spending obscene amounts of money and too many lives treating it symptoms. It's difficult to argue with a moral like that.

Food for Thought

This is a deeply thought-provoking novel. Ironically, although the text of Days Captive can be quite graphic in places, its power lies in its subtlety. For example, all the traits seen in the story's protagonist, when amplified, are similiar to those seen in terrorists, which is both eye-opening and disturbing. Yet incredibly, the book never sinks into negativity - nor is it too cynical. That in itself is quite an accomplishment and praise is due to the author for successfully pulling it off. In addition, the story does not single out certain terrorist groups and lavish them with attention. A terrorist is a terrorist is a terrorist suggests Mr. Scott, and rightly so. Instead, he focuses on the psychology behind terrorism, which is a unique twist.
Quite simply, this book could not have come at a better time. The only question is - will anyone listen? Or will we remain 'captive' to our inane political beliefs, perverted religious practices and/or doomed nationalistic policies.

Wow! What a find!

Review Date: 2004-08-31
At a time when many news mediums seem to do little more than recycle government spin proclomations, Days Captive, in its own unique way, makes a strong case for a return to timely and thoughtful investigative journalism. The story, a truly gripping one dealing with terrorism, is told mainly through flashbacks (a jounalist relays his views of a friend, now dead, who was once deemed a hero by thwarting a major terrorist attack). The book's substance lies in its protrayal of the (negative) power of apathy as well as its depiction of humanity's seemingly innate distaste for problem prevention.
But it really packs a punch when it shows, through vivid characterization, how basic human traits can aid or bring about terrible acts of brutality.
All in all, a great novel for a disturbed and disturbing decade.

Along with the book you also get the access to the Student Consult online which I think still needs improvement. The software took a lot of time to synchronize with my PDA and it generates many un-coded letters.
But anyhow, this book itself is worth the price. A must read for new dermatologists.

I recommend this book to my students. It gives an excellent overiew of multimedia tools and techniques. It is, however, a bit of a mixed bag. It covers a great many topics, but none in much detail. Although a bit vague, it is an excellent buy for any students of multimedia or any professionals who want better view of the big picture.
However most multimedia professionals might best spend their money on something more meaty.
