My son LOVES anything space related, and we were a little surprised to see that the "take" on this "space" story was about our amazing earth, which is, of course, in SPACE.

This is a fun story where a little boy sets out on a bicycle adventure with his dog. As the story progresses, new creatures are added, one by one. In the end, the boy tells of his adventures over a family dinner.

My son (age4) thought this book was great although it was the illustrations that held his attention. The text is a little 'soapy' but overall I would recommend for K to 1st.

This book is the format for a child 4 or 5 years old ( a pre-reader). Although the information and illustrations in it are good, I think it is too busy for a child that young. It's a gift, but I think I will have to do alot of explaining and I'm not sure how the concept of "ages" will be understood. We do not live in an area where some of the scenes could have taken place. It is good but will not be a favorite.

A Great Book!

In My Own Backyard by Judi Kurjian is great for any age. It is fascinating and scientific as it takes you back to the very beginnings of the earth. Each time-period rivets my attention. I love its captivating sense of mystery. I feel I am there in the excitement of each page. No other book I have ever read gives the depth of intrigue that In My Own Backyard gives. Each time I read it I get more and more joy. I never tire of reading it and looking at the beautiful illustrations that develop the haunting wonder of existence it captures on each page. I can't say enough about it. I wish every book were as good. I recommend it to everyone. There is no other book like it and I love it.

Not the correct text for little, concrete listeners!

Let me start by saying this is a beautiful book. The cut paper art is delightful, fascinating and complex. The words are also beautiful and express a beautiful thought- that the world is special place. The problem is that the poem is WAY too abstract for pre-k and probably even Kindergarten children. So, even though one might be interested in this book because of the art, the story will not one that a majority of young listeners will ask for again and again (the true mark of acceptance from a 4 year old.) Perhaps the book would be better served if it were marketed for an 8-10 year old croud.

"There- in the space of the sky is a field for the sun, a sea for the moon, clouds where storms can hide, stars where silence sings..." So begins Richard Lewis' poetic and captivating, In The Space Of The Sky. His simple, engaging prose, full of imagery and magic explores the wonders of the world around us... from the tiny snail curled in it's shell, to the immense sky above us and earth below, to even our gentle dreams each night as we sleep. Debra Frasier's bold and bright, geometric, collage artwork sparkles as it swirls around the pages, and complements the expressive text beautifully. Together word and art create an evocative masterpiece that is sure to send little imaginations soaring with each page turn. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, In The Space Of The Sky is a soothing and reassuring bedtime story children will beg to read again and again, and a picture book that shouldn't be missed.

A good read. The Justice Society is one of the best hero groups in comics. Each character is well developed, yet they they continue to develope. This graphic novel is no different. Even these well established characters continue to grow.
In my humble opinion the JSA is the best hero group in the DCU.

Having been recently introduced to the JSA, I have read three books. The first one (Justice be done), Dark Reign, and this one (Lost). I liked this book the best. Maybe it was because it took three books for me to warm up to the characters. Maybe because it was Geoff's writing. Whatever the reason, I liked this the best.

My seven-year-old son and I borrowed this book from the library, and made two kites out of it and bought the materials for a third that we haven't made yet. The first two kites were easy and fun and flew pretty well. The third (a Delta wing kite) is more complicated and is going to require using the sewing machine, because we couldn't find the right materials for taping the pieces together. (I wish the materials list had given us a better idea of what kind of substitions are possible.) My son absolutely loves the book and pored over the pictures but can't do the projects alone. I liked the book enough to buy our own copy, so that the library will stop charging us fines :-)

This biography of Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the moon, tells his life story, and includes a chronology, chapter notes, a glossary, further reading, and an index. This biography is an excellent tool for children who are doing book reports, or even for children who are just reading for enjoyment. The inspirational and encouraging story of Neil Armstrong must be heard by all!

While I am not the intended audience for this book, I enjoyed it. My 12 year old received this book as a birthday gift. I have always been a fan of the space program, plus we really like the "Children of the Lamp" books written by the author. The author did a wonderful job using historically accurate facts to build this fictional story. As someone who always wondered what it would be like to be an astronaut, it was easy to get caught up in the story.

I only give the book four stars because towards the end of the book, the story takes a very bizarre turn. The main character, Scott, who confesses earlier in the book to not really believe in God, has what could be describe as a "conversation" with a higher power. Is it a hallucination, aliens or God? It wasn't necessarily the questioning of God's existents that turned me off, but I found this section rambling and just plain odd.

Some parents might find this "conversation" and Scott's lack of faith objectionable. Also, Scott and his friend look at his Dad's "Playboy Magazines" (with minor comments about such) and make typical 13 yr old boy comments about girls, etc. I would personally not let a child younger then 12 read this book and you still might find yourself explaining a few things.

All in all, a good book. I will wait a year or so for my son to read it though. He'll enjoy the book more when he is in that 13 yr old boy just starting to really like girls and becoming independent state of mind.

Scott MacLeod is about to become the youngest astronaut in NASA, only no one is supposed to know about it. His mission is a secret one that not even NASA will talk about or the other astronauts know about.

It all started when Scott's dad, who is an Air Force pilot, started teaching Scott to fly. Scott is only twelve, so when he is able to crash land an Air Force plane, one he shouldn't have even known how to fly, NASA takes notice.

NASA is trying to land a man on the moon, but many things could go wrong and there are still lots of questions that need to be answered before that ambition can really take off. So, before the real astronauts left on the Apollo missions, NASA had been sending secret test missions into space. These missions, which used chimps as astronauts, were called Caliban.

When the chimp pilot for the latest Caliban mission goes crazy, NASA recruits Scott to fly the shuttle. The shuttles are made smaller, so who better to pilot them than a twelve-year-old boy? But, NASA has secrets about the training of the chimps and Scott isn't sure he can go along with the mission as planned.

Several times during the reading of this book, I had to remind myself that this was fiction and not a true story. There is a lot of adventure, from Scott's Air Force flying to the space program. There is a lot of technical jargon as well, dealing with Scott's training and then his mission in space, which might turn off some readers. If you're a fan of space exploration this book provides an interesting perspective on the 1960's space race.

Just finished reading #2 Lost in Space: The New Journeys, THE PASSENGERS, and it was fabulous! Anyone who has seen the big screen movie or is familiar with the classic camp series of the 60's, this is a treat to read. The continuing journey of the Robinson clan, with Mj. West and villainous Dr. Smith, aboard the Jupiter 2, as they take on a couple of space orphans. Unbeknownst to the crew, these orphans are not what they appear: instead of wayward, innocent children, they are dangerous creatures that threaten to destroy the ship and all its occupants. The story is mostly told from the point of view of young Will Robinson, as he and his trusty robot companion suspect something strange about the orphans and implement a plan to expose their evil ways.

An absolute page turner that is surely to please all adventure seeking young minds. I loved it and look forward to the next installment of Lost in Space!

The Pet is probably the best in the kids series. I'm not sure they call it a kids series, but it sure seems like one. Anyway, back to the book. The Pet is where Jake and Nog make friends with a pet that they call Babe. It's been a while since I've read this book, but the end is where an alien ship (as good, and slightly better than the Borg) comes to the space station and does a tiny attack, and the masked commander claims that a "prince" is aboard DS9. I knew who that prince was right away. However, the crew and Jake and Nog don't. Even though Sisko sounds innocent and dosen't know where the prince is, they still attack. I can't remember when or how, but later Jake and Nog find out who the prince is, and go to Ops (I like to say the bridge) with Dr. Bashir, and Babe does something incredible... I'm not telling you any more, except that unless it was a very good story I wouldn't be writing this much. So if you see this book, get it no matter what. Enjoy it.

Odd, but delightful. Similar to the madcap antics of the DS9 book (not the episode!) The Siege, it's a romp that includes all the characters we're used to while focusing on Jake in an interesting way. Before the War broke out several seasons later, this is a light, breezy read to wile away an afternoon.
