Very cute story. My 3 and 5 year-old loved reading this book with me, even though they are not twins. They thought the "poodles from space" were hilarious! Great ending when the twins are asked to stop playing and do their homework and it says, "Even superheroes have to listen to their mothers!" We look forward to reading more of the books in this series.

HISTORICAL CHOOSE-YOUR-OWN-ADVENTURE

As a kid, I was a huge fan of the Time Machine series. They were like the Choose Your Own Adventure series, but so much better because of the following reasons: 1- Almost all of them are based on FACT. This book mentions A BOOK OF FIVE RINGS by famous swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. As it turns out, that book actually exists, as did the author. This book also mentions how Musashi died in a cave towards the end of his life--also true. 2- Instead of CYOA, you get to pick one or two of several items to take with you on your quest. Depending what you took with you will determine what action you have to take later on. 3- The books are illustrated. 4- To add more educational value, timelines and other neat stuff are enclosed towards the beginning. 5- Basically, the storyline to this books is this: You go back in time to accomplish the following mission: bring back Miyamoto Musashi's sword. You can try and steal it or just ask for it. It sounds easy, but it's not. I highly recommend not just this book, but this whole series for its wholesomeness, fun, and educational value. Many books try and be accurate, enjoyable, and educational, but this book SUCCEEDS.

Tenderfoot in Space: colonizing from a kid and his dog's POV

Tenderfoot in Space was originally written for Boys Life magazine, and not surprisingly, focuses on a young Boy Scout (Charlie Vaughn) and his dog (Nixie) that moves with his family to Venus to build a better life than they could expect on an overcrowded Earth (not an uncommon theme in Heinlein's books). It is a delightful read, typical of Heinlein's juvenile series. Most of the story is written from either Charlie's or Nixie's point of view; I especially enjoyed reading scenes from Nixie's viewpoint. Charlie has to first make a difficult decision on whether or not to take Nixie with him; the only way he can go is to be frozen, with a low probability of survival. On the way, Charlie learns lessons on life and society, which continues when the family begins life on Venus. The Vaughn's do not arrive on Venus as wealthy immigrants, and Charlie quickly learns the difference between living in a govenment-controlled society and a pioneer one, especially school! Charlie and Nixie have several adventures, make friends, and there is a surprise ending with Nixie saving Charlie and a new friend's life in the Venus jungle, ending with Nixie receiving a Boy Scout lifesaving award. This was a fun story, with Heinlein doing his usual excellent job of inserting his firm views on self-reliance, loyalty, independance, and non-political correctness (a strong point is made about school being a social vs. a learning opprotunity) while delivering an interesting and enjoyable story. Anyone familiar with Heinlein will enjoy this story. I strongly recommend this as a read for anyone, but especially younger readers.

I heard about this book on NPR and thoroughly enjoyed reading it at breakfast this morning. A 10 year old child and on up would thoroughly enjoy the story and tackling the concepts presented. The author was a Professor of Physics who felt kids could understand the concepts of physics if they were introduced to them in story form. Kids love a challenge and lots of them could handle this one.

Relativity made clear

This is the best introductory exposition of relativity theory ever written. As a book, it occupies that strange middle ground between fiction and non-fiction, much like the Magic Schoolbus books (where should the librarian put them?), but it is for a somewhat older age group. By somewhat older, I mean only that it has fewer pictures: I'd put it in with all the Milton Bradley/Parker Brothers games, and say it's for ages 8 to 80. For ANYONE who is interested in relativity, no matter what their age, this book is a perfect place to start. Check your library, and if you can't find it try to place an "out of print" order. This book is a gem.

In dictionary format this volume on Notable Scientists includes the thoroughness and accessibility Facts on File thrives on for presenting easy to research biographies of giants in the field. This volume is about those pioneers in space and astronomy that provided the core of knowledge that scientists are still accessing and using. There are familiar names, such as, Plato , Aristotle, Isaac Newton, Edmund Halley, Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawking, "...known as the scientist who explains to the masses the laws that govern the universe." This volume is easy to reach for as an authorized site for a "quick biography" that includes personal information, contributions to the field of science, and a picture. Besides learning about the highlights of the scientists' career, the researcher will also find the obstacles and personal tragedies that often beset the lives of these men. Although few women are included, they are sometimes included in the text. Edward Charles Pickering employed women to be "observational astronomers" and help produce Henry Draper Catalogue, funded by the widow of Draper.

This book is a brief, yet reasonably thorough synopsis of the American space program that led to the moon landings. It begins with the stirring words by President Kennedy, "I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth." Not mere words, but a challenge to do what many thought impossible within the time frame.
All American students should be exposed to the thrill of achievement that was the American space program in the 1960's. It was a time of great national pride, a common beacon that all Americans could look at and be proud of. Written at the level of the late elementary school student, this book is an excellent description of those wondrous times and achievements.
