All the Hannah and the Angel books are great! I recommend this book for children of ages 9-12 because the story is based on a 6th grade girl. The book is written wonderfully and has little drawings on the sides of the page so you know what's going on. It also has history and geography in it because she travels all around the world! Happy reading!

My son loves this book for bedtime or anytime. He's into robots, outer space, & building things. That means this book covers it all. The colors are so vivid that my son enjoys looking at the pictures and asking questions about Nova's friends.

David Kirk is the creator of "Miss Spider's Sunny Patch", a favorite in our home. It seemed only right to invite Nova into our reading library.

Stand By for Adventure

Tom Corbett Space Cadet, originally a radio show, in the mid 'fifties broke out into eight books. They were hardback books aimed at adolescents, and like The Hardy Boys, Tom Swift and Nancy Drew books, were probably written by a syndicate of various writers writing under the name Carey Rockwell. They show more consistency than do the Tom Swift books, however, so they may have all been by one author. The books were packed with illustrations by Louis Glanzman, and invited on the back cover: "Calling all boys and girls to Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and all points in outer space. You too can be a part of the group of daring adventurers from the Space Academy who travel to mysterious lands in outer space on dangerous and exciting missions. It's a simple as opening a book... if the book is Tom Corbett, Space Cadet."

These books must be out of copyright, judging from the many paperback editions now available. Given that the hardbacks, with their full color jackets, are collector's items, this is a way to read the stories without tracking down the hardbacks. This edition has a color space- themed cover, not too many errors, and is reasonably priced. The print is easy to read even though the original 212 page hardback is here formatted as a larger, 136 page paperback. In my view, this edition is superior to those in which the publishers didn't even try to design a space- themed cover, instead simply opting for a pattern.

The stories in this series are very adventurous, and the characters heroic. They center around three cadets in Space Academy, Tom Corbett, Astro, and Roger, and their adventures in the Solar Guard. Even the bad guys don't cuss, and the good guys good- naturedly call one another names like "Venusian monkey," always in keeping with the outer space theme. The hardbacks carry an ad for the Rick Brant Science- Adventure Stories, which managed to be just as exciting while remaining earthbound. All of which testifies to the great writing from the 'fifties in these books, which will delight young (and older) readers of today. To quote the back jacket of the hardbacks, "Don't miss these thrill- packed books."

We just love this book and the other by the same authors What if?. The illustrations are expressive, the story is thoughtful and full of tidbits of information for the children. Best of all the parents in the story are loving and supportive of their little monster. I would reccommend this one highly, and will buy it for friends and family.

Great Vintage Science Book for Children

I like this book for it's beautiful illustrations and the simplicity of explanations. It also has some interesting inaccuracies which would make it perhaps add to it's collectibility. THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN PRIOR TO MAN LANDING ON THE MOON. Pages 22-23 have an illustration of men in space suits holding long ice picks and leaping on some mountains on the moon. In the background is a red rocket ship which has landed on the moon. The caption states, "The first explorers will find the moon a vst desert, with lofty mountains and big craters dotting the dusty plains. The Moon's weak gravity will allow the explorers to move in great leaps."

The chapter on MARS: PLANET OF MYSTERY, is interesting as well:
Page 27 explains, "Mars has no rivers, no oceans, or lakes. But it has a tilt like Earth's and therefore has seasons. When it is winter in one hemisphere, ice or snw covers the area around the pole. This polar cap is probably less than a foot deep, but it contains nearly all the water on the planet! In spring, the ice cap begins to melt. Through the telescopes, we see the dark greenish patches appear along the edges of the cap. These are perhaps areas covered by green moses--the only life believed to exist on the planet...As autum comes, the greenish areas turn brown. As winter sets in, winds carry the water back to the pole, and there it freezes again."

The next chapter covers "MEN OF MARS" It discusses how people thought the canals seen on mars must be irrigation ditches to lead water from the melting snow caps to the farmers fields..."But few astronomers take these ideas seriously...In 1956 Mars came closer to earth than it had come in many years. Astronomers all over the world watched it through telesopes, photographed it, and studied its light with spectroscopes. STILL THEY FOUND NO SURE SIGN THAT THERE IS ANY LIFE ON MARS EXCEPT FOR LOWLY MOSSES...But even if there are no people on Mars, we can look forward to the day when Earth men may explore it."

I think this book is a great collectors piece to contrast our view of the solar system in the 1950's vs now, and how far we have come. It is also lovely for its beautiful illustrations.

What a great fun-to-read book!!!

If you enjoy the mental antics of time travel you will enjoy this book. After reading others in this series you may find your self surprised to find many of the main characters meeting an "untimely" death, but stick with us... "to everything there is a time."

Tana Hoban's books are all wonderful, and this is no exception. The simple photos, especially with the use of black and white, are appealling to young children. The use of other children is also great as kids love looking at pictures of other kids.
