Children Fly to Mars!

Review Date: 2007-05-10
"Messages From Mars" is a delightfully creative adventure story. Here, children are the astronauts flying to the Red Planet to explore the Martian volcanoes, deserts and huge valleys. Along the way they report their findings to friends and family back on Earth.

What sets this book apart from ordinary cartoonish children's books is that almost every page contains amazing actual NASA photos of Mars, many shot right on the Martian surface. Children can picture themselves standing beside a Martian crater or exploring sites where the first Earth landers and rovers touched down.

In "Messages From Mars," children can see what it would be like to travel in space, to look at our solar system and to travel in the low gravity and frigid temperatures of Mars.

This book would be perfect for any child who loves airplanes, spaceships, flying and adventure. I have bought several copies for young relatives and children of friends.

The third book in an interesting series

Mexican Treasure Hunt is one of my favorites in this series. Hannah is a sixth grade girl who is sent on mission by four angels: Demi, her bossy guardian angel; Aurora, who sends her messages in clouds; Lyra, who sends her messages in code; and Lorielle, who sends her Messages in codes.

Wherever Hannah goes, she's sent to help other kids or animals. Children can relate to this book, because Hannah isn't perfect, and gets in lots of tight spots. She's a mordern kid. When Hannah's sent somewhere. she comes with a backpack full of usefull things she's never seen before. The best part is, she can bring things (hats, instruments etc.) back home!

The illistrations in this book explain what words cannot. They arn't half pages or whole page illistrations, but rather small artwork off to the side. I read this book when I was 10, and think that other people will also enjoy it.

In keeping with the sequel...

If you enjoyed 'In the Keep of Time' & 'In the Circle of Time', you'll like this just as well. I first found these books in my grade school library (quite a while ago, now) & am now looking for them for my children, who I know will enjoy them as much as I did then; besides, I'd love to read them again myself to renew my old acquaintances, Robert & Jennifer. Some say the plot is thin-to-non-existent, or the message falls flat, but to a kid, the magic is still there & there is an important message found in the actions of the Barbaric Ones. I'll re-read these as long as I have them & enjoy them just as much every time.

Another group of books I've 'found' again recently are the Time Quartet by Madeleine L'Engle: A Wrinkle in Time; A Wind in the Door; A Swiftly Tilting Planet; Many Waters. I've just started her Austin series, too, & I'd recommend them to adults & children alike.

The Moon by Carmen Bredeson is a very precise bookon the moon. It tells you the precise history and what people thought of the moon hundreds of years ago and also today. Carmen also talks about some little details about the moon. For example, I learned that the moon causes high and low tides! It is a great book for moon studiers too.
