I read this to my 6-year-old, and we were both mesmerized. The story is told exceptionally well. First there is some "action," then some history, then more action. Practical details about rockets and space travel will fascinate kids and adults alike. And after reading this book, no one will forget the meaning of the words, "The Eagle has landed" and "That's one small step...." It sounds silly, but I actually got choked up at the climax (moon landing).
This is a great book for any kid interested in the original development of the space program, up to the first walk on the moon. I can't make a pronouncement about the reading level (maybe third grade?), but you could read it to a 5-year-old, and I think even most adults would like this book. I'm going to be looking for other books by this author.

Moonwalk, The First Trip to the Moon, by Judy Donnelly and Dennis Davidson, was based on the United States Space Program in it's attempt to out do the Russian program. The U. S. wanted to put 2 men on the moon and after numerous tries and a few fatalities the U. S. Space Program succeeded. Apollo 11 was the first rocket to land on the moon. I found this book very exciting. I learned much about how the space program worked and what it took to get to the moon and back again safely. I encourage other young readers to read Moonwalk. It will inspire many readers as it did me to study more about the future of space travel and our space program.

Rau, D. M. (2003). Neil Armstrong. New York: Children's Press.

Synopsis: Do you like adventures? Do you like to explore new places? In this biography, you will be transported into the world of Neil Armstrong, the famous astronaut that walked on the moon. You will learn of the hard work that helped Neil Armstrong become the heroic American icon that he is today.

Evaluation: Adventurous young readers will enjoy this short and simplistic biography of Neil Armstrong's life. Dana Meachen Rau takes readers from Armstrong's birth to his historic walk on the moon using short, easy to read sentences and brilliant black and white or color photographs. Unfamiliar words are kept to a minimum or provided with the pronunciation key. This biography does not go into great depth given that it is written for children in first or second grade. It presents simple and basic facts. At the end of this book, a pictorial review of important words is given. Educators teaching primary grades are likely to use this book and the other books found in the Rookie biography series to teach biographies. Young readers in the primary grades will likely enjoy this biography and be inspired to read the others in this series.

I bought this to use in my 6th grade reading classroom. It is excellent to use to teach reading skills such as main idea, author's purpose, or summarizing. I put it in a center and students have 10 minutes to use the book for an assignment. Since it is at a lower reading level, students have success in building skills to use in higher level texts.

This book is a good addition to the grade 1-6 classroom library.

Lovely book given to my 4 yr old as a birthday gift. Text reads: "When night comes, I can see billions of stars twinkling in the dark sky. The sun that shines in the daytime and keeps us warm is really a star. A star is made of fiery gas. It gives off brilliant light. Some stars are so far away that their fire has burned out by the time the brightness reaches us. Long ago, people imagined pictures in groups of stars and gave them names. These are called constellations. Constellations can tell us many things. When we see Orion the Hunter in the sky, we know it is the season to harvest what we planted. All year long, the Big Dipper points toward a star named Polaris. Polaris is also called the North Star. We always see Polaris in the northern sky. If you know which way north is, you can always find your way in the darkness. Sometimes before the stars come out, we can see a bright light dangling low on the horizon. It looks like a star, but it isn't. It is the planet Venus. Stars twinkle, but planets glow with steady light. When something in space goes around something else, it is in orbit. Planets orbit around stars. Planets get their light from the star that shines on them. Earth where we live is a planet. Earth orbits around the sun. The sun and its planets make up our solar system. Moons orbit around planets. Some planets have many moons. Earth has just one. Our moon seems to change its shape each night, but it doesn't. It is always round. We just can't see all of it."... there are about 8 more pages to go, but I hope you get the idea and can judge the book for yourself.

There is a lot more in Parking Spaces than you might think. It covers all the technical stuff, but is also full of ideas for making parking a better part of the city. I think that any serious firm should have this book.

I use this book as a teaching tool in social groups to talk about personal space and respecting others space. The book gives great examples of what is personal space when sitting, standing, waiting in line, etc. I love the humor used by the author to help kids understand that not everyone gets it at first about space. The main character finally gets it at the end about his relationship to others and that he wasn't attending a planetary space camp! Great story!

This book is great for those k-3rd grade kids who don't seem to understand that not everyone wants them in their face. Lois goes about his day crashing into people (flying through space) and is told he would have to go to Personal Space Camp. He is all excited because he imagines that he'll be flying rockets or getting to eat astronaut's ice cream. When he sees hoola hoops on the floor, he is confused... I love the gray pictures of Lois's imagination and how he views his world (or more appropriately, his out-of-this-world) experiences. At the end he finally realizes that he had misunderstood what others had been saying all along. The humor is just what this topic needs and it allows the kids to grow without being embarrassed.

my 4 year-old son is inspired to read because he wants to solve this book himself without my reading assistance. Otherwise than the really complicated words, he is doing fairly well. He loves the illustrations, wish there were more of these books.

the best book of all time

This is by far the best book of all time. I stumbled across it once, and never found it again. You and your robot monkey friend, ME-2, are on a quest to find your space ship that has crash landed on "the planet of terror." Each two page spread is a new mini-game involving hidden items, mazes, and simple math. Some of the problems may be easy, but the book is ridiculously fun. It is quite imaginatively drawn, and the storyline is as interesting as it is diverse. You travel through starship junkpiles, monster forests, futuristic cities, inside computers, and fake earth enviornments to name a few. This book/game has an excellent replay quality. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book in an instant to anyone who wants an amazing family heirloom to keep for generations to come.

The perfect intro to space!

I recently bought this book for my second grader. We were so impressed that we plan to buy the other books in the series.

The writing is very clear. My daughter was able to read it to me, although she needed help on words like "oxygen", "atmosphere", and "asteroid". There is an easy-to-understand glossary in the back of the book, so she was able to look these words up.

The book begins with an overview of the solar system, then each planet is profiled in its own chapter. Each chapter asks, What would it be like to visit this planet? It also gives facts about the planet such as what the planet is made of, how long it takes to go around the sun, where its name came from, as well as stories and legends about the planet. The watercolor illustrations are easy to understand, and there are also many photographs.

The experiments are very good, although not necessarily something you might do for a science fair. They are designed to quantify size and distance. For example, one experiment has a solar system built out of fruit. Jupiter is a watermelon, while Earth is a cherry and Mercury is a pea.

At the end of the book is a really fun game where kids can match "postcards" with the planets. The kids read the postcard which tells about the conditions of the planet, then try to guess where the postcard came from. My daughter doesn't usually enjoy science books, but this one she read from cover to cover.

Another thing I like about this book is that the author doesn't write in absolutes. She uses words like "scientists think" or "may", because we don't truly know what happened in space or what is in the center of the planets, we can only theorize.

And yes, Pluto is included as a planet in this book. It was written in 1998, before Pluto was plutoed.

I have recently purchased "The Planets" by Cynthia Nicolson. It has been a wonderful resource for my 8 yr old son and I to share. This is especially a good resource for children who are just beginning their exploration of space, and planets. We have especially enjoyed the easy experiments that aid the child to make a "real connection" with our solar system. This is really a "must have" book for every child who desires to learn about the wonders of our solar system! Definately a five star book! We were also pleased with the affordable price!

Micheal and Norman's giant sock eating plants are
needed for Dr. Sparks' space expieriment because
some younger sock eating plants couldn't be trained
to pick up trash soon enough. Sending Stanly(one plant)
into space with astronots and Fluffy(the other plant)
away for ground testing causes a hillarious adventure
for everyone.
