Nancy Drew Books

Did not enjoy these books - will stick with books written under Carolyn Keene.

As a collector of all things Nancy Drew, I love these books. They are graphic novels featuring the titan-haired detective and the other familiar characters from the Nancy Drew novels. The stories are new and modern, with a anime twist to them. There's a bit more supernatural flavor to these. I am not generally a fan of graphic novels, so I can't comment on their quality from that perspective, but I think they are an entertaining and unusual format of story for lovers of Nancy Drew.

Ok story; dosen't have the fun spark of the regular Nancy Drew books. Also the Bess and George characters are somewhat mixed up.

They never delivered product, are they a real company
or just another rip off

I think this is a great book except that Nancy and Ned aren't together. This isn't mostly about parties or anything. Nancy is trying to stop Charley Stern from ruining the weekend, and she's got to find the person who's stolen something. Amazon is a great company. I can't find this book anywhere else!!

This book was the worst Iread. What about Ned?? He is so perfect.

"The Artful Spirit" is a place to start for basic clues about how to be creative. I felt delight and heart from the book's author/illustrator. She recommends reading pages at random. I concur. She's packed alot of information/ideas into her pages. BUT...I began to really enjoy the book when I started to use it as a color book. Her doodle drawings are quite precious. The book morphed into real value for me, as it became the base of a personal altered (collaged) journal. In that capacity it's the GREATEST. Her subtitle is Crafty Hobbies to Gift Wrap ...Your Life. That works for me.

I grew up reading books in the Hardy Boys series and often talked with the girls in my classes who read the Nancy Drew series. Now that I am older, I occasionally read books in both series as I find them an interesting demonstration of how the literary world of youth adventure has changed over the years. Since both books go back several decades, one can see an enormous amount of change. This book, written in the late 1950's, demonstrates the common attitude towards women of that time.
While Nancy is of course brave and resourceful, the villains in this book are complete wimps. The story line is a rather weak one about real estate fraud and the women living in an old house seem to be the victims of a haunting. The hidden staircase of the title refers to the secret passage in the house where a man can move through the house and make noises to scare them. When Nancy's lawyer father fights back against them, he is kidnapped and held in a dungeon connected to the passage.
The story falls apart when some of the men in the plot are captured and confronted. All of them show no backbone and while they act stiff and strong when in the presence of the police, two of them immediately enter a phase of total remorse when confronted by Nancy. They confess to everything and assist Nancy in locating her father. It is a commonly held belief that the power of hero stories is based on the strength of the villain(s). The spineless puppies in this story make it weak and uninteresting.

The ever-commendable Nancy and company are heading up the youth campaign to save the recently fire-gutted River Heights recreation center. Suspecting foul play beyond even the missing insurance payments, Nancy knows her hunch is correct when someone begins sabatoging the fundraising and threatening the campaign leader, Mary McGregor.

Although it's nice to see the girls back at home in River Heights, it's too bad they couldn't have had a better mystery to enjoy while they were there. THE SUSPECT IN THE SMOKE, while not exactly lame, still limps along, at best.

Boring

I strongly believe that the Nancy Drew Comics aren't as thrilling as the actual books are. The "Nancy Drew" in the comics isn't what Nancy Drew really is; she is smart, curious and adventurous.

She's not at all what they had her as in The Haunted Dollhouse.
She wasn't as alert and with the pictures it's easy to tell if someone is lying. You'll probably like it if you haven't read the real Nancy Drew books.

Nancy Drew is an amateur detective who is very talented at it. When she goes on vacation she always finds a mystery there. Most of them have murders in them and the bad people will usually try to kill Nancy to get her off the case, but it never has worked.

When the main non Drew crew character is Emma Blavatsky, you can pretty much guess something spooky will start happening. Nancy's city is having a retro 30s weekend, and with a seemingly haunted dollhouse involved, this book pretty much goes completely Scooby Doo, only with no cool dog and a lot of whingeing about lack of internet access.
