Amber Brown disobeys her mom and lies to her dad about getting her ears pierced. She feels left out because her mom is getting remarried. I love the Amber Brown books because they are very exciting and sometimes the characters get stressed out, but they always talk it out and discuss their feelings. Then they get along. It is just like real life. This is a great book for kids whose parents are divorced or kids who want to understand what other kids' lives are like. JG

A Great Book!

This book is fun for kids of all ages! This Amber Brown book is about a girl named Amber Brown and she wants to get her ears pierced, but her mom does not allow her to. So, since her parents are divorced, Amber's dad gets to take Amber anywher she wants. So, her father took her to get her ears pierced but her father didn't know that her mom had said no. So, when Amber got home, she got in trouble. Kids should read this book, I think, around Christmas because it takes place near Christmas. The author's message is to not do things you are not allowed to do.

A great book!

I have read other Amber Brown books and looked forward to reading this one. She is pretty cool. Sometimes I think she has more brains than the adults, especially her mom, who sometimes seems very spoiled and selfish for an adult. This is a funny true to life on target book. If you haven't discovered Amber Brown, this is the one.

I really like this book because it's realistic and christian. I feel like I can totally relate to Sierra and it's written so well that you can actually feel how she felt through the author's descriptions. It's so great to find good christian books, it's not only entertaining but it's teaching because if you ever got placed in some of the every-day situations that Sierra did, you would know what christian stuff to do such as pray, ect. I would recommend this book to anyone.

As an elementary school teacher i know that things for children are a good, simple way for people to start learning; even "older" adults. I have been correct. I also like hearing the language from both children and adults as my husband and I will be spending six weeks in italy with families. I plan to pass this along to friends that want to review their past italian language skills. The workbook also provided good review and learning. It's been fun. Ciao.

I have been searching for an easy way to teach my daughter, age 4 who has grown up only speaking english, my native Italian. I have tried various computer programs, books and tapes, and other teaching methods. All were rather boring and unhelpful, my daughter soon lost interest. This system is wonderful! The lessons are interesting and fun. They are blended wonderfully with songs and activities that keep a child's attention. I highly recommend this program. I do recommend that someone in the family practice with the child and participate with them while they listen. This is by far the best children's language packet I've seen.

I bought this set for my son Jacob for Christmas and I know he is going to love it. The books are the perfect size for little hands, they are personalized for my son and I think the concepts behind the books are great. I enjoy reading books with my children and know that their favorite books either have their names in them or about little children just like them, plus they teach! What more can you ask for.

This is a great group of children's books. They really are "for" children, to hold, to carry around, to take to bed with them--that's what my children do with them. I have an 18 mo. old and a 4 yr. old. Any of these books really "hold" their interest. My children love the rhyming and spend a lot of time just looking at the books. I think the author has put out a very good series and say Thanks for it.

This is an outstanding series for pre-schoolers that delights, captivates and encourages learning. Both text and art work are extremely creative and highly appealing to the very young. My 2 1/2 year-old grand-daughter owns the series and is very fond of all the books and her "Magic Box books" are an active part of her everyday life. The books are wonderfully interactive and perfect for young inquisitive minds. Their size is just right for small hands to handle. I would recommend these books to anyone wanting to encourage learning in a positive, exciting way.

Jacob is a darling little boy and his grandma takes ordinary things out of the magic box and makes them exciting. These books are favorites and we read them a lot every week at our house. My daughter is always ready to hear her magic box stories. The books keep her interest and she never tires of them. The words are interesting for her and the pictures are adorable. I would recommend these books to anyone looking for an entertaining way to teach young children.

This is wonderfully written. My 3 yr old son loves saying, "But Bob is very red." (a repeated line in the book) In my particular book, the small board book, the blue color looks more purple than blue, but, other than that, this book is fantastic. It gets read a lot in our house.

Little kids love this book that stars Junior Asparagus. Junior opens his color box and with a little help from his friends, shows his favorite colors. This book is more interesting and entertaining than many color books. It also provides some laughs (even for adults) and has a lesson about God. Great book for kids three and younger.

My son (age 2) loves this book! And it really is helping him learn his colors! We read it over and over... he's constantly bringing me "Crayon Story" for another reading. It has the 3R's of children's books... rhythm, rhyme, and repetition, as well as humor and story. Also, it's gentle reminder that God made the world has gotten us talking about Creation in general.

One of my son's favorites!

When I ask my 14-month-old to go get a book for Mommy to read, more often than not he comes back with Junior's Colors. I don't know what it is about the book, but when he gets to the last page ("But Bob is very RED") he just giggles! I guess a red tomato with a big grin on his face is kind of funny to a toddler. I definitely recommend all of the VeggieTales books. And, as with all Veggie books, God is subtly present. ("When God made the world, he used all sorts of colors...")

Wonderful teaching book

My 2 year old LOVES this book. It's right up there with Winnie the Pooh. When she gets whiney, I ask her to go get Junior's colors & she eagerly gets it. She even asks for it while sitting in the car. It's possibly the vibrant colors & the familiarity of "the veggies". She already knows all her colors, but it is a great reinforcement in her learning.

This is an excellent resource for anyone working with youth and young adults, especially those in the non-profit field. The book provides ideas, helpful hints, and most importantly empowers youth to help their community.

All of the ideas are well thought out. Many of the activities can be altered, simplifed, or enhanced depending on your goals.

There are very helpful hints on how to create press releases, flyers, public service announcements, etc. This is a helpful guide for youth and a great resource for adults.

I recommend this book to anyone who works with youth and young adults that are committed to helping others.

I regularly teach 4th trough 6th grade kids on Sundays where they expect to have some kind of craft to do each week, which is not easy to come up with every week. I have used several of the level 3 crafts from this book, which were well received by the kids. I think that I will get a few more good crafts out of this book. The level 1 and 2 level craft are too simple for this age group, but I am sure would be fine K through 3rd grade kids.

I love this book for art projects for my homeschooled K & 2nd grade girls. The activities have levels and you can look in the back of the book for projects grouped by level or medium. I have taken some of the activities and changed them to work for everything from K-3rd grade. The projects use basic supplies and have instructions and then further ideas on how to use the ideas presented.

Teachers and parents, don't miss this art resource for your kids! The author has done a wonderful job of compiling a variety of activities using a variety of materials, at a range of skill levels. I have completed a few of these projects with students aged 6-16, and they have turned out great. The materials are easily obtained, the projects generally uncomplicated, and the instructions clearly illustrated and easy to follow.

Projects include designs and pictures made with paint, glue, string, sand, cut-out paper shapes, markers, foil, beans, macaroni, glitter, plants, fabric. Techniques include drawing, experimenting with shape, line, texture and color, contrasting shapes and colors, stamping, splatter and spin, weaving, shadowboxes, 3-D sculptures of various materials, crayon resist, sponge painting. Not only can all these projects keep your kids being creative, they really turn out attractive. I have several art books for children by this same publisher and they are all excellent.

A coloring book?

Review Date: 2007-11-18
As a children's librarian, I bought this book for my library based on reviews and the pictured cover. When I buy my own cookbooks, I look for color photos of the recipe. The pairing of the recipe and final product are truly appetizing and certainly sell, not only the food, but also the cookbook. However, open Kids Cook! and find colorless pages! In fact, it truly looks like a coloring book. At first, I was really annoyed. Children also deserve color photos. Then I reread the reviews and re-examined the cookbook. OK, true, it is a fine little cookbook, easy to read, easy to follow.

With those things in mind, I came up with a way to write a totally positive review. After (you and) the child puts the product in the oven, s/he can sit down and color the recipe page! I suggest keeping nearby a big box of colors--one with bunches of choices in order to get the colors of the food just right. Unless the cook has homework, what better way to use the time while the food cooks?! Pairing a second creative talent with the first! Not only that, but the child can keep up with what has been tried at a glance. On the inside cover, create a chart of good/bad and all between ratings and then mark each colored recipe accordingly! What fun!

Yum!

A Book for Parents & Children Together

I bought this book for one reason: "Now Q is for Quincy, she was rough and ready. The first fire engine in our state; let's go boys, hold her steady!" I was born & raised in Quincy, Illinois and when I saw this book on a shelf at a conference in Chicago, I promised myself I'd buy it if my hometown qualified for mention. So it did. And so I did.

This book is subtitled "An Illinois Alphabet" and is part of a nationwide series. Every state in the union has its alphabet book with titles like S Is for Show Me (Missouri) and E Is for Empire (New York). I don't know if these book are really great for learning your A, B, Cs but, if you feel connected to your state, they are fun books to read. In addition to the short verse for each letter, these books contain longer passages in the margins giving more detailed information and the artwork by Mr. van Frankenhuyzen is quite enjoyable.

Ultimately, this is a book that would have to be shared between an adult and child. I can see myself using the verses to help teach my child to read and then sharing the more difficult marginal passages. I think a child learning to read would have a tough time with these. But maybe having an adult and child share the reading chores is not such a bad thing. Find your state and share something of it with your children.

Kathy-Jo is a state treasure of Michigan, where she has been creating her unique books for children (and their parents) for many years. She has worked on other volumes in the fabulous SLEEPING BEAR state alphabet series, including the "M IS FOR MITTEN" book which describes her own home state of Michigan (with its two hands across the water of the upper and lower peninsula, that look a bit like mittens, especially to the young'uns). And also she is responsible for V IS FOR VIKING (Minnesota of course) and the B IS FOR BADGER volume which gives us a peek at Wisconsin the cheese state.

But has she ever written a book as filled with fun and info as L IS FOR LINCOLN AN ILLINOIS ALPHABET? I don't think so. It's a natural for her, a state so big and boisterous she could have written two books about it. Did you know that the original Ferris Wheel was built in Chicago and it could carry whole classrooms filled with kids in one car? Yes, up to fifty people crammed in! Kathy-Jo's little rhymes carry the day, with everything from favorite dishes to the natural landmarks of our beloved Illinois.

Along with the fabulous pictures, the author once again has combined an enjoyable read with a great history lesson on the state of Illinois. The pictures are so well done, that they compell you to want to read more about each place or event. An altogether great book for your children's library.

Most horse books are designed for children, and that's exactly who enjoys them. But Lady's Big Surprise is enjoyable for anyone of any age. You don't even have to be a horse person to understand it; Dawson explains all the horse terms she uses and even has an informative glossary at the back. This book is a great read, and I myself learned a lot of horse sense from reading it!

Get this book it is the best ever!!!!!

I sent this book to my neice as a Christmas present. She isn't one to like reading but she finished this book and re-read it several times. After I read it, I understood why. The author created believable characters and situations that children AND adults can identify with. There's a terrific glossary of terms in the back of the book for people who have never been on a horse. Can't wait for the rest of the series.
