The only book you need to learn special relativity

"Special relativity" is discussed in many classical mechanics, electromagnetism and quantum / modern physics textbooks. You may learn different aspects of this subject from these books.

This book is specifically designed and written for those who want to learn special relativity comprehensively from one single source.

The book starts with the basics of the theories behind special relativity with simple arguments and plain language. In the first 5 chapters, you learn the mechanical fundamentals of special relativity. The examples and end-of-chapter problems are very useful and instructive. Furthermore, the answers to all problems are given in back of the book as well, which enables you to check your answers. Starting from chapter 6, more advanced topics are introduced, like momentum, energy, basic electromagnetism and so forth. Again, the problems should be solved by students in order to gain a thorough comprehension of the subject matter. The diagrams and pictures in the book are also very helpful to understand the concepts.

The bibliography at the end of the book can be used to consult for further discussions, because special relativity has many applications in various areas of physics.

To sum up, this book, all by itself, can be used to learn and understand special relativity very well in a short period of time, because it is concise, simple, effective, pedagogically well-prepared and very suitable for self-study. You do not need any other fancy, expensive book. A.P. French does an excellent job in laying out the principles of special relativity with illustrative examples and problems. It deserves every penny you paid.

comprehensive treatment and historical perspective

If you are looking for the fastest way to learn and use special relativity (this is not about general relativity as the previous reviewer says), this is not the best book to use.

After an introductory chapter 1, which quickly previews much of the later material, French systematically analyzes the many observations and contradictions (the Michelson-Morley experiment just one of them), astronomical and laboratory, about the behavior of light that fitted neither an ether-wave model or a particle model. We are thus lead to a deeper appreciation for Einstein's insight and genius in his creation of the special theory of relativity; it was much more than just an extension of the Lorentz-transformations.

French is a master at his subject, and his systematic elucidation will reward the reader with a deep understanding. His problems are very well designed, and he provides answers which is always very helpful in learning.

If you have some time, and would like also to gain historical perspective about what it was like to struggle for a consistent theory in a mass of contradictory observations from the world view of Newtonian mechanics, I highly recommend this book.

Simple introduction to a very complicated subject

This book was extremely helpful when I was taking a class on special relativity. The author introduces new concepts and rules in a very logical order, and the examples clearly illustrate the material. The book is written very clearly, especially for such a complicated subject. The problems in the back of every chapter allow you to test yourself and make sure you have grasped the material, since some of them have answers in the back of the book. Overall, a great book to either teach special relativity to yourself, or as a companion for a special relativity class.

I purchased this classic work at MIT, circa 1972, and have referenced it too times to remember. When I bought it, the book was part of the M.I.T. INTRODUCTORY PHYSICS SERIES. It contains about everything one could wish for on the subject matter. The derived transformations for acceleration and force (i.e. of d(mv)/dt) have been especially useful, and are not often included in other books. It is truly a gem, created by a world class physics instructor at the top of his game. G.R.Dixon.

As the old cowbow song says, if you're really thirsty you want cool, clear water. THE BOOK OF THE BOOK is cool. It's clear. And it quenches my thirst for the real antidote for thirst--water. And I re-read it often. I still crave soda pop, beer, wine, whisky, lemon-aid, juice and all kinds of literature. I still read all kinds of books. But this one stands out by its bulls-eye shot straight to the essence of my humanity. It's also as disappointing as regular water can be. Most of the time I want Diet-Pepsi. Then THE BOOK OF THE BOOK seems bland and irritating. ButI keep returning to THE BOOK OF THE BOOK again and again. It's funny, too. And the joke was on me.

An Extraordinarily Valuable Book

Review Date: 2001-07-21
The value of this book cannot be overstated. It shocks and invigorates the reader, drawing out his or her psychological 'hot points'-the blocks that prevent understanding. But the value goes beyond this: it gets to the heart of the matter, emphasizing what it is that is really important in reading, studying, learning, and understanding. The words in the text may be few, but they pack quite a punch. This book is one that teaches not only by what is written in it but by what it does to the reader. Or, to put it differently, the blank spaces in the book are as useful as those darkened by the print in it. Those who wonder how this may be possible are encouraged and invited to explore this truly wonderful work by Idries Shah.

It is appropriate to warn any person, thinking of purchasing this
beautiful work, that the secret contained within this book is not
meant to be revealed to just anyone. If you are a sincere admirer
of Sufi practices and traditions, then this masterpiece is meant for you. If you are just curious or are not really interested in Sufism, this book will probably enlighten you in a way that you will find emotionally unpleasant. Inside this book, there exists a secret that will be revealed to you and unexpectedly shock you into enlightment.

I'll bet that, like me, you won't be able to put it down until you've finished every word, and that you'll find yourself reading it again and again.

My oldest son used the Summer Bridges books between kindergarten and 1st grade. Completing only one or two activities a day helped keep him sharp on new skills he had learned in kindergarten and prepared him for the next level. We enjoyed them so much we ordered 1st to 2nd grade for this summer and also for his younger brother pre-K to K. What I like most about the pre-K to K is the simplicity of exercises. Simply exercising dexterity is so important for rooting good writing ability. My son is only 4 and will be completing one more year of preschool before attending kindergarten, but he is already practicing tracing lines and letters. Also...we order all three available books for my oldest son..Math, Reading, and Activities. The pages are bright and interesting. All activities should take 10 minutes or less. They are simple review mapped out for moms and dads. Also in each book there are summer reading lists which are book titles appropriate for age and reading level. The children can then, after reading the book, score it according to how well they liked it. Excellent, excellent product. These books will be used in our home every summer!!!

This book is not teaching my son anything new but he enjoys it. The book is what it says a review of what they did the year before. I like it because its not difficult for him and he can breeze right through. He does enough work so he doesn't forget what he's learned and each day is very short so I don't lose his attention. The incentive contracts is a great motivation system.

Christy Miller is determined to have the perfect spring. In SURPRISE ENDINGS, the fourth book in Robin Jones Gunn's Christy Miller series, Christy thinks she has it all. Not only is she a top contender for a spot on the cheerleading squad, but the prom is coming up and her parents might just bend their rules to let her go with perfect Todd.

As Christy begins cheerleading tryouts, she is continually mocked by the older team members, especially jealous Renee. The insults start getting to her, and all that keeps her going is football star Rick Doyle. However, Rick's encouragement goes a bit too far, and Christy begins to wonder if she's trying out because she wants to or because Rick is determined to mold her into the perfect girlfriend. When she confronts Rick about his intentions, he only reaffirms that he wants to date her --- as soon as she reaches his social status.

Meanwhile, Todd makes plans for a special dinner with Christy, who is sure he'll ask her to the prom. But he arrives at her house only to inform her that he's going with another girl from school. Completely devastated, Christy vows to forget her entire relationship with Todd. In a moment of anger and desperation, she commits to going to the prom with Rick, who is all too eager to accept her invitation. Of course, Christy is overlooking one small detail --- she is still not allowed to date. Her parents force her to cancel, which creates even more drama in their very confusing relationship.

At the same time, Christy's friends and family have already pinned her as a star cheerleader, even though she still hasn't made the team. Will she be able to live up to everyone's expectations? Will Rick ever speak to her again? And, most importantly, can she ever forgive Todd for destroying her prom dreams?

SURPRISE ENDINGS is a great installment in this enjoyable series. It's a very quick read, and the non-stop excitement in Christy's life will keep the pages turning. Some readers may find the cheerleading plot to be a bit superficial compared to the rest of the series (at one point, Christy prays to make the cheerleading team, in order to be a Christian example for others), but it's just in the background of a much larger and more interesting story.

Fans of the series will not be disappointed, especially as the book deepens the complicated love triangle involving Christy, Todd and Rick --- one that is sure to be explored in subsequent adventures.

"Surprise Endings" is a great book. Robin Jones Gunn did an excellant job in writing it. It continues from the previous books as Christy Miller now faces more tough choices. Trying out for cheerleading, who to go with to prom, dealing with another girl in the picture, and peer pressure from her other classmates are just a few of the hard situations she's faced with. Her religion and beliefs play a big role as in the other books. I can imagine what she's going through. There are so many conflicts and challanges that she faces. It never gets boring. It is interesting and real. I recommend this book for anyone who likes reading about adventure, romance, and tough problems that occur in everyday life. I enjoyed this book and I hope others will also.

The book I read is called Surprise Endings. It is by Robin Jones Gunn. It is the fourth book in the Christy Miller series. It is about a girl named Christy Miller who decided to become a school cheerleader and go to the prom. To her disappointment, her parents won't allow her to go to the prom. It gets even worse for her when her boyfriend goes to the prom with another girl. One of the juniors who was also trying out for the cheer leading team made it clear to Christy that because Christy was only a sophmore, she wasn't welcome on the team. I like this book because you learn a lot about life from reading this book. I also like the book because the author describes the situations Christy goes through very well. She makes you feel as if you are there, instead of being a person reading the book. It is a very good book that makes you want to keep reading it and not put it doum until you are finished. I have never read any of the other Christy Miller books, but ever since I read Suprise Endings, I have wanted to read more of the books in the series. Robin Jones Gunn is one of the only writers I know of that will make me even come close to crying when she describes some of the sad situations in the book.

An overlooked masterpiece
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-08
Most classics enjoy a broad audience, and maintain their popularity through the years because they are so fantastic. Other classics are no less fantastic, but for some reason never attained the iconic status that they deserve. This is that kind of classic, a quiet classic which is little-known, but still has that special ability to impact those who read it.

This book tells the life story of Tarka the Otter, who is born in the Devon countryside and faces the struggles that all otters must endure as they grow up, mate, and grow old. Tarka is the main character of the book, but the author refuses to anthropomorphize him, instead bringing us into an utterly realistic world of life, death, joy and loss, without pretending that otters can actually speak in anything approximating a human language.

I've read other books that purport to show us the life of an animal in this way, but none of them bear the richness of detail and the feeling of authenticity that come with this novel. The author has such an intimate understanding of the particulars of Tarka's life that we are drawn into his world with a stunning immediacy. Every feature of the land is known from the ground up; every bend in the creek is lovingly described. The way that the land and the various organisms that populate it interact creates a breathtaking tapestry of life that puts most other nature writers to shame.

The language, particularly the language used to describe the natural settings, is rich and exotic, making us appreciate the wonders of an unremarkable countryside setting in a new way. No matter how well read you are, this book will throw new words at you, and enrich your vocabulary. Turning to a random page, I see references to "a sandy rabbit-bury," the "slot of deer," an "old dismated ketch," and "the frore air." What a wealth of words, and yet the unfamiliarity doesn't prevent us from enjoying every poetic sentence.

If you like to read about animals or appreciate nature, this is a book that will speak to you more profoundly and more eloquently than Thoreau, and which will allow you to appreciate the wonders of nature even moreso than the books of Bernd Heinrich.

If you devote a little time to reading this book, you'll be rewarded out of all proportion to your investment.

A wonderfully written story.

This book is quite possibly the best novel about nature ever written. It's gorgeous and epic, not a kid's book by any means. This was T.E. Lawrence's favorite book, by the way, and there is more wonder, beauty, and realism in any one paragraph than in most books you'll ever see

Tarka the Otter is descriptive, realistic, & in places, sad.

Review Date: 1997-10-04
Tarka the Otter is written very descriptively, from an otter's point of view. It's similar to Watership Down, but Tarka's thought is much less anthropomorphized than that of the characters in Watership Down. You'll find this book quite sad in places, perhaps even upsettingly so, because of the realistic (and unfair) interactions Tarka and others have with English hunters and their dogs a few times (such is life). If you cried at the end of Where the Red Fern Grows, beware. If you are unfamiliar with the endearing antics of members of the weasel family, you are in for an educational and fun treat. Perhaps you'll run out and get a ferret after this.

The Greatest Animal Story Ever Written.

My mom bought me this book when I was ten I immediately thought it was going to be a good book as it had a charming front cover showing an innocent looking otter. Tarka is a sweet young otter and the book is like his life story in a way his life is like a human's . He is born ,he grows up,he loves he loses and he dies. The discription of him and his surroundings create a vivid picture in the readers mind. It really is a charming story and I would recommend this to anyone who loves animals and/or reading.

In the book "Too Many Secrets" there was a lot of suspense going on. It made me want to keep reading until I knew what resolved the problem, but then another problem came up and just kept on reading until I was done. This isn't a boring Sherlock Holmes story, it's upbeat, in the 90's, and always keeps you on your toes. I strongly suggest you read this, even if your not intrested in mysteries this is the book for you!

I recommend this book to readers that like a good mystery combining romance! It is a great book that truly outlines problems of life. This is a Christian book, though I am not Christian, I still found this book real thrilling. Way to go and keep on writing Patricia Rushford!

THIS IS THE COOLEST MANGA EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alright, so I've been reading manga for a while now, and of course you get some great stuff in this genre, and of course you get some stereotypes. This is flat out, the greatest manga of all time. I've finished the first three, and can't wait for the next one. Alright, I'm a 27 year old male, so don't think it's a kiddie thing... but this book just rocks. It's got some really heartfelt romance (some a la sappy manga style-- so what???) and it's got great action... and it contains THE most laugh-out-loud hilariously funny sequences ever. I would feel almost embarrased to read it in public because it makes me laugh so much... And, hell, it's about a boxing penguin who is the reincarnation of a guy who just fell in love with a girl at first sight... only to be snatched away before they even had their first date. That part kinda reminds me of Meet Joe Black.... Ahh, but I ramble. If you like any of the following: penguins, romantic elements that aren't too girly and sappy (but I'm sure they'd appreciate it too), Straight up AWESOME and original humor, if you want something different in your stereotypical manga or stereotypical life, if you ever wanted to see Rocky remade as a Penguin.... GO OUT NOW AND BUY THIS!!!!!! you will love it... I can read this book over and over... I can read it once and then pick it up and read it all over again, And feel completely immersed in the beauty and genius of Gin-Chan!!!!!

Cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved Tuxedo Gin. I mean it was funny about the whole reborn as a penguin. I liked it and I read it over and over again. I think anyone will enjoy this manga! My rating A+++++++++++.

Great little magna for penguin lovers

Like the Seattle reviewer, I also only bought the book because I am a big penguin fan. The book starts off slows, and it is awkward as a westerner to read it right-to-left style, but it is worth it. The subtle comedy and the nifty drama makes it a can't-put-down book. Seeing a penguin try martial art moves, or the varios sprinkling of penguin trivia, just makes it the perfect magna for penguin lovers.

A must have if you love penguins.

Better than most

This manga is surprisingly good, containing a good mix of comedy and romance.

Graphic: 5/5, Crisp and Clean
Storyline: 4.5/5, Excellent mix of Comedy and Romance - I suppose it's heartfelt if you're a male
Characters: 4.5/5, a bit static at time and each has simple motives, but the motives help in each storyline and you gain a better feel about the characters with each story.

Overall: 4.9/5 - One of my top ten favorite mangas.

extremely underestimated manga

so... viz is FINALLY coming out with a whole line of new titles? Interesting... Basically, this was my first and only thought when I found this out. And when I saw that the new manga line up consisted of a 'girl-meets-penguin?' romance, I thought it was simply the most ridiculous thing ever. Out of all the good manga that has yet to be published... they bring something like this?

However, like aways, looks can be deceiving. I read a sample chapter from the viz manga sampler book and was immediately sucked into the storyline. Tuxedo Gin is surprisingly really, really good! Yeah, it looks lame. That's what I thought too, but this book is pretty darn funny and interesting. Trust me. Give it a try and you won't be disappointed.

Teddy bears and kids go together like peanut butter and jelly. This classic children's story sticks well together, and the kids are sure to be stuck too.
This little bear is a bit shy. He is almost childlike going through the various motions of his adventure. Being of a child's view point is a huge plus with young children. He is faced with obstacles a toddler may have to deal with.

My 3 year old loves this book

I can't begin to count the number of times we have read this book since finally purchasing it for Christmas. My son loved Corduroy and loves this one just as much. It's a book that I enjoy as well, so I don't mind reading it over and over.

A sequel to the classic

Lisa's bear Corduroy gets lost in the laundromat. Lisa looks for him but the manager must close up for the night. Then Corduroy goes on his adventures. It's a very good picture book for children 3-6.

Read to Your Child to Create Bonding and Intellect

Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, you child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.

To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. A Pocket for Corduroy was one of her picks. Since the story is well summarized here at Amazon.com, I would like to focus on why the story is an important one to share.

First, Lisa is shown as being not such a young child. Yet she carries her teddy bear, Corduroy, with her openly. No one comments on that, shames her about it, or acts as though she is doing anything strange. Children draw great comfort from familiar objects, teddy bears, blankets, and other stuffed toys. This book endorses that connection, overcoming the stalled thinking that children must quickly become little adults.

Second, Lisa helps her Mother do the laundry as her primary focus. That shows a connectedness to her Mother and the family that is very encouraging for a child. She can make a contribution although she is a child.

Third, Lisa makes every attempt to be responsible about Corduroy. She tells Corduroy to wait in a chair and not to move. She tries to find Corduroy before leaving the laundromat, and gets her Mother to agree to come back again the next day to find him. Although she is sad, she overcomes her reluctance to be separated and leaves. This suggests that she can and should trust that everything will turn out all right. This reinforces an optimism that is good for children to develop.

Fourth, all of the adults act in responsible ways. Lisa's Mother brings her back. The artist who finds Corduroy in his laundry bag dries his clothes for him and leaves him where he can easily be found the next day. The man who works in the laundry helps Lisa and her Mother find Corduroy the next day. This encourages the idea that everyone can and will help one another. This is a good role model for children as they imagine what they should be like as adults.

Fifth, the whole misadventure relates to Corduroy feeling bereft because he does not have a pocket. So Lisa sews one for him, caring for him in a nurturing way even though he is only a teddy bear. Caring about others is a great way to feel better about oneself.

As you can see, the book is filled with optimistic, caring, considerate human values expressed through the story. You can reinforce this by discussing with your child how s/he might care for a favorite stuffed animal or blanket during an upcoming trip. This can help reduce the anxiety caused by concerns about the changes, and assist your child in being careful so the loved connection is not lost.

You and your child will feel affirmed and closer after you read and review this story together.

Overcome your stalled thinking about providing affirmations to your child with this book!

More adventures with Lisa's very own bear. . .

In this installment of Corduroy's adventures with Lisa, we see that some time has passed since she first brought him home from the department store. She's taller, wearing her hair a little straighter, and her mom looks like she had a makeover, too. Corduroy, however, is wearing the same green overalls he did in the first book and has managed to keep both buttons on this time. Early on in the book, however, Corduroy decides he needs a pocket, and in the search for one gets separated from Lisa and her mom while they are in the laundromat. They leave without him, setting him up for a meeting with a friendly stranger who washes his overalls for him, as well as encounters with such laundromat staples as powder detergent and pushcarts.

As in the first book, Lisa comes back for him the next day, and once again her needle and thread come to the rescue.

This book and "Corduroy" are the only two Corduroy books my daughter and I have read. I wonder if there are others, and what kind of sartorial splendor Corduroy will be arrayed in next if the trend continued!
