This book is very well written, very thorough and descriptive. You can tell the author has done a great deal of research and study in the field of science. It is very intelligently done, a wonderful first book. I am left wanting to know more about this lunarian society and how it progresses. Can't wait for the next book in the series!

Science and Religion are indeed colliding in our society today. This book is open to free thinking. This book is a "must-read" for anyone concerned with what might happen if we continue on the same course, global warming as one instance. This book is also important to anyone concerned with separation of church and state. Religion in much of the world is synonymous with State Government so that the whole focus of the state is to teach and enforce that one religion, destroy anyone who disagrees, and at the same time condemn all science as Satanic. This book makes us ask ourselves if we want our own government to be controlled by religious zealots?

This book is, also, a "must-read" for anyone curious about what science can do for the human race such as genetically get rid of diseases and defects, help heal injuries and illnesses and be used for positive good. This book is an "eye-opener" as to where we are going with all this cell-phone/ipod/computer technology. It is all combined, in this book, as a visor worn constantly on the face, that provides all these services and more. This book made me ponder how science has greatly benefitted the human race in the past (agriculture, sanitation, electricity, cars, airplanes, antibiotics and medicines, books, phones, computers, and all the things that we are glad science has provided for us.) Why not continue the search for scientific understanding of how to care for ourselves, our society and this world we live in. Why is being a "free-thinker" important to our future as a nation? I surprisingly found myself, after finishing the book, enjoying a review of the time line at the beginning and reviewing Genesis and Exodus and rethinking where we came from and where we are going.

This book has no aliens, or creatures of impossible fantasy. This book takes time to explain all the materials developed in the book and possibilities within our future. Don't skip details, as it will help you learn and be surprised at what is possible. This book is more a "prediction of the future" than hard-core science fiction. I encourage each of you to go to the author's web page, given in his book, and learn more about this remarkable man. As a Metalurgical Engineer, he knows Rocket Science.

Just a great read!

The conflicts in the world today, and the technology of today are writ large and plausable in this novel.

EVOLUTIONS CHILD, Republic of Luna is an exceptional piece of future science as I have read in some time. It is set in the near future of this century toward it's close. It is well thought out work that develops the scientific thoughts and developments that are only now being developed. The advanced uses of the technology are well used in the story of a Lunar Republic beset by religious dogma that has existed for millennia. This story portrays what happens socially and technically as primarily extreme religious factions collide with a republic that is not beset with a religious fervor of its own, just their belief in their right to live the way they chose without threat to themselves. Their response to the threat is well answered by their use of technology including Bioengineering, Mining, Mechanical and Molecular Engineering.

Plot takes place in 2098 mostly in a community on the moon. Lots of good science and an exciting story, highly critical of fundamentalist religions and making a compelling case for the advantages of reason. I can't wait for the sequel!

Lazarus Sheffield knew too much: secret things, forbidden things, dangerous things. He had to take sides and do it quickly in a world without tolerance; where religion was power and a free thinker was dead meat.

He plotted his escape from the planet of his birth to the planet of his birth rights - the moon.

Charles Lesher shows the world of the future rooted in the world of today. Science, just barely fiction, interlaces with both doom and hope; exploding into furious action in man's eternal struggle for freedom.

A marvelous read for freethinkers that like their science fiction rooted in science fact! Read this book and then hope it doesn't take too long for the next one.

The was a really good book! Martin has been at a new school for 2 weeks. He has already gotten into fights and is trying to convince the superintendant of Bluford High School that he should not be expelled. He is also having problems at home. Martin's mother moves him to the new school after his younger brother was shot and killed. Martin is sneaking behind his mothers back to hang out with Frankie and the other "home boys" from his old neighborhood. Martin finds out that the bullet that killed his brother was really meant for Frankie. When Frankie realizes Martin knows the truth, he betrays his old friend and plots with two other boys to kill him. Martin convinces the two boys that Frankie is not the kind of boy they should hang around and the three of them stop Frankie in his tracks. This book taught me alot. I learned the value of friends and also if someone knows something that could help the police solve a crime they should do everything they can to help.

When my son's third-grade teacher said the students could get extra credit for doing science experiments in front of the class, I began a search for a great book that would not only give simple, interesting experiments, but that would provide information about the concepts behind the projects. This book fit the bill perfectly! We've done two or three of these in front of the class already -- the kids were interested, and my son was able to convey some interesting scientific principles. Great for teachers, home schoolers, or parents intent on getting their kids extra credit. :)

If you teach the elements and/or the periodic table to elementary students and want to make them come alive, this book is a definite must have. It is chock full of easy to prepare investigations as well as "element essentials" thumbnail sketches of various elements. Most materials are ones you have on hand either at home or school. Without a doubt, it is the best elementary chemistry book I have ever seen.

You'll love this book if you're teaching the elements

I bought this for my 3rd and 4th grade homeschooled children. There are no concepts that make the Periodic Table seem dull or uninteresting in this book. Instead, it uses simple language for the elementary aged - middle school student, nice black and white drawings, and silly rhymes to make it seem so understandable and fascinating. You'll find it loaded with facts that interest children to help them draw it all together. The idea my kids are left with is that science is "so cool!" Many experiments, using everyday items, are throughout the book. This enhances the fun and learning. Science should be interesting and not boring. This book exceeded my expectations. I'm sure we'll continue to use this book for several years.

When Andrew Herman and Tyler Herman go to Fright Camp, there were already scares when they were in the bus. When they were really at Fright Camp, Andrew was excited because there were places like "The Cavern of no Return, The Quicksand Pit...". When they meet Alonso, Alonso volunteered Chris to be volunteer from something. R.B Farraday showed, I Forgot to tell you Andrew and Tyler and all those in the camp love him. R.B. Farraday thought something was strangw, because what happened to Chris was the same thing that happened in Revenge of Dr. Cruel. When they were going to ride Spin and Scream, there were also horrors. When Andrew was taking a bath, he saw something underneath and he saw Jack's face pulling Andrew underwater. After that, when they were in they're bunks, somebody was spying on them. They knew it was Alonso. When dinner came, Alonso announced that there was accidentally added some poison on the food. Quickly, Chris and Jack can feel themselves fainting. Is this for real?. After that when Jack woke, he decided to call his mom. When morning came, Jack's mother was in the quicksand pit!. When Alonso let Andrew in the The Mine of Souls, he heard cheefrul voices and clappings. There stood R.B. Farraday and some tall mens clapping for him. When Andrew knew they were tricked he was mad. Alonso, was just Farraday's brother, Ned. The part who played Duffy was just Max. And the part who played Jack's mom was only Margo. When Andrew's brother and Merideth's sister was missing, they decided to in the Cavern because they heard voices. On the ending they found Tyler and Elizabeth but they were stranded with them including R.B. Farraday and Ned!

I bought this book for both of my girls, one age 10 and the other age 12. They have had the book for over a year now. When they received the books, I thumbed through to share with them some passages that I found useful. After that, they began to read the book and use it as a reference source for those times they needed answers to and didn't want to ask ol' Mom. Often we discuss their findings and they seem confident in the knowledge that they have learned. This book is an excellent addition to any adolescent girl's parents toolbox. It has been a wonderful resource for us and has served as a foundation for many discussions.

I highly recommend this one

I first ordered a copy of this for my daughter when she was 9. She didn't actually get into it until she was about 10, but I have noticed her going back to that book over and over again. She asks questions, and it has opened up the way for a lot of discussion. Everything is in it from manners to clothes to making new friends to schoolwork and bras. It's all in a neat organized manner and written so it's easily understood and followed. I bought another copy for a friend's daughter, too.

If you are (or know of) any special Pre-teen girls in your life, this is the PERFECT reference book for them! They will find themselves referring to it over and over, and sometimes just reading it to see the comments other girls wrote in. This book has been checked out from the library at least 10 times before we found a copy of our own. We also have another David Peters favorite in "Strange Creatures", and can't wait to get a copy of our own. I only wish that someone would put out a new edition of the books, so we could get them new. With the scale pictures, and the wonderful drawings, it keeps our 8 year old reading for hours (and it has since she was 5). If you get a chance to get your hands on one, grab it.

This incredible book first caught my eye in the school library when I was in 4th grade; this same book is now found fascinating by my children ages 6 and 7. The illustrations are beautiful and the text is written in a way that even a young reader would understand. I find it really saddening that the book is out of print, because I would really like to replace the well-worn copy that I have handed down to my kids. Trust me, this is a book that you can certainly pass down for future generations to enjoy (no exageration)!!!!

This is a book that transcends generational barriers and age barriers in language and content. I got this book when I was eight and the way Peters fluidly coalesced extinct and extant creatures into one book influenced my entire outlook on life! I still refer to the book in university now that I'm an ecology major.

This book, although texted for the 10-15 yer old reader, is excellent enough to be enjoyed by readers of all ages. It briefly examines all manner of large creatures, both extinct and living, and by full-color, scaled drawings, with a man and and woman for visualization, shows how truly huge such things as apatosaurs and blue whales really could be. One of the interesting features is that each and every creature is drawn in the same scale, so such things as triceratops and modern rhinos, and mammoths and elephants and tyrannosaurs, may be compared. You will receive some surprises. I recommend this book to all readers.

These books are great! The entire concept of the hidden picture gets the kids really thinking. The adventure of learning that follows each picture just amazes me. The Where's Waldo books did not appeal to our family. We love the " I spy " books and those pictures are magnificent! These books however, the pictures do captivate you but there is a learning process with each picture. My children are 10, 8, and 5 and I notice the difference in what each one asks from these pictures. I think this series is wonderful because it does combine the puzzle concept with so much else. The Great Animal Search is my 5-year-old son's favorite!

This would have to be one of the best kid's books around. My 5 year-old just loves hunting for all the hidden critters and counting them off. Sometimes all you see is a tail, or an ear, or a familiar silhouette far off on the horizon.

There is no better way to get children developing a sense of the different environments around the globe and the animals that live in all the different habitats: from the arctic to the equatorial rainforests and from the mountains to the deserts; under the water and by the seaside.

We have only one criticism with this book. It was my budding, junior-zoologist that spotted it. Mr Ibex in not in the comprehensive index although there are ten ibices (?) to be seen on page 26. With 300 different kinds of animals in this book, we have to give it a score of 299 out of 300, that is, almost perfect!

In The Great Animal Search there are some 100 animals to spot and identify on every double-page of this oversized book. Each scenario showcases a different part of the world and the wildlife that lives there. In addition to countless hours of puzzle solving fun, there is a wealth of fascinating animal facts presented in succinct, easy-to-read captions.

This book is funny! Few words per page. Kids will reread it again and again (they can retell this after you've read it to them once). They may read it to everyone they know. Suitable for English Language Learners of all ages. See if you can get this little gem in a hard cover. The pages fell out of my soft cover copy. The pages themselves are durable, it was just the binding.

I bought this for my son when he was 18 months along with a lot of other popular first readers. This book and most of the books in the same line are very entertaining compared to the other first readers. The illustrations are detailed enough to discuss and the stories are really funny. It is so much fun to read these books to my son because he can join in with the words and discuss the pictures. He also reads them to his teddy bears. 9 months later I find myself buying second copies of books in the series because they are so worn from me reading them several times a day. :-)

This is one of the first books my daughter could read by herself (not counting theBob Books Set 1-Beginning Readers, of course). She is reading harder books now but still goes back to it for a confidence boost (and for a good laugh). The book has very few words, so most 4 or 5 year olds will partially memorize it after the first few readings.

This book will probably not interest kids over age 5 because it is more of a picture book. Also, if you have a very tiny child, you might want to "save" this book so that it is new when they are first learning to read!

The pictures are fascinating and funny. The details continue to start discussions (even after the 30th or so reading). Also, the book is short so early readers can finish the book without getting restless.

The Gum on the Drum is un-bear-ably funny!

It's about a Bear's sticky situation as a result of trying to chew gum and bang a drum at the same time.

Not only is it a funny story, but the artwork is great, too. The all-animal band & their friends have a down-homey, folksie kind of feel to them-I was sort of reminded of an informal music jam among friends. For example, the Bear and his buddies are wearing rolled-up-sleeve flannel shirts, over-alls, and work boots, like Jerry & the band sittin' around and pickin' at home...

The other animals are a hoot, too, especially the little scurrying critters in the background. Your child will have a fun time picking out the little guys as they react to the main events up on stage. This is one of my faves!

It's been 18 years since I read this book to my daughter. Of all the books I used to read her, this one is the one I remember best. The story is funny, and the pictures are interesting for a small child at bedtime. I've often wondered if it were still in publication, and I'm glad to see it is. Try it out on your child, and perhaps it'll create a similar memory for you!

Andrew Rubin 11/16/00 Hedgehogs in the Hall Ben M. Baglio

Hedgehogs in the Hall is a heart warming story about a young girl, Mandy, and her brother James. One day Mandy is outside and is putting some grass in the compost pile. Then a hedgehog pops its head out, and her little hedgehog kids do the same. The hedgehogs go in to the hall of Mandy's house and walk around. Then the mother hedgehog walks in to the street and a car is coming. The hedgehog was hit and was taken to a man from a clinic who helps the hedgehog's leg to heal. After the hedgehogs are all healed Mandy has an idea to make the hedgehogs safe from all roads and birds. Mandy and her brother think how to make a refuge for the hedgehogs. They talk to many people in the city. Almost everyone helps to make the refuge. After one week all of the work is done and the people have made a refuge for the hedgehog. Will it work? Or will all the hedgehogs die? I think the book is very good. If you like to read books that are similar to what happen in real life then it is a very good book for you. I like the little hedgehogs because they are very cute. I like the part when one of the hedgehogs is walking under a porch and it makes a funny little noise like a squeak. All around the book is very good and never gets boring. I would love to read the next four books because the author gives a lot of detail and good pictures. I wish the author would put more sounds in to her writing. I think this book should get a Newbery Award for a good detail and cliffhangers to the end.

This is a great book for animal lovers! The characters and story are very realistic and interesting. I liked how the book told how hedgehogs should be free in the wild, and should not be kept in cages as pets.

The book's setting: The setting was at the town of Welford, in the very center of town.

Main characters: There were 6 hedgehogs: 1. Rosie was a mother of four whose leg was run over by a car. 2. Scout explored, and wandered, and was eaten by a badger. 3. Spike was the heaviest guy. Spike was named for his tail. It always went up like a spike. 4. Tiggy named for her clumsiness and size. 5. Speedy named for his incredible speed. He was the loudest of the lot. He helped Guy. 6. Guy was first found in a net farmer used for potting beans and plants. He was blind and was helped by Speedy. There were 3 children: 1. Mandy, a girl adopted by vets, has an interest in animals. She wanted to help the animals. She got all her knowledge from her parents. 2. James was Mandy's best friend. James' father, Mr. Hunter, was the very first to find Rosie and her babies and he almost put a pitchfork through her. 3. Claire found Guy, a blind hedgehog. Her father, a doctor, ran over Rosie's leg with his silver car. He turned his front yard into a hedgehogs' hotel.

Summary of the book: Rosie, a mother of four, was run over by a car. Her babies had to be nursed as well because if they were abandoned, they could be eaten by badgers and foxes. Then Guy was found. He was helped by Speedy, who followed him around, helping him, being his eyes, because Guy was blind. They were nursed by Mandy Hope, James Hunter and Claire McKay. There were four baby hedgehogs, but only three survived because Scout was eaten by a badger.

My personal reaction to the book: I think this book is sad, enjoyable and very well-written. It makes you really want to read on and on until you finish. But when you finish, you have this empty, hollow feeling. You got the hollow feeling because you've enjoyed the book so much. You really want to read on and on forever, but it always have an end. When it does end, you want more to read. I always like hedgehogs. I really like the hedgehogs in this story. I wish it wasn't so sad. It would be good if Scout wasn't killed. He was just wounded and he had to be nursed.
