I am on a one year leave from teaching second grade to stay home with my 5 month old. The teacher in me purchased this product because I wanted to make sure my baby was not missing out on any learning. I wish I would have discovered it sooner as the guide is set up for babies not able to sit up, babies able to sit up, and babies able to crawl. It gives activities to do at each of these stages. It is easy to use and activities are divided into categories: listening and talking, physical development, creative and learning from the work around them. We were already doing some of the activities included, but the book offers many ideas I would not have thought of. Overall, I feel it is a great resource to have.

As a first time mom,of a child with special needs to boot, I had no idea. This book and the others in the series are great resources for finding things to do with your child other than watching Teletubbies for the thousandth time. If your child needs extra help in a certain area, like fine motor or listening skills, you can easily find a variety of exercises to help here. The later books in the series (Threes, Fours, and Fives) would also be a great resource for a homeschooling parent.

It's almost overwhelming. There is no way you can spend this much time teaching everything, but it's nice to be able to pick and choose fun things to do with your baby. It's easy to use in a well thought out layout from birth on, divided by sensory perception.

Not just for daycare! I am a first-time, stay-at-home mom and needed a way to tell if I was "doing all the right stuff" in regards to play, development, speech, music, etc. This book gives you exercises that are so easy for each stage of the first year of life. There is not a lot to read like a typical baby care book, but each section outlines what the child should be accomplishing and gives you exercises to ensure that your child reaches those development milestones. If you can look past the idea that it is written for daycare providers, you will find this book extremely helpful. I knew I was giving my child all he needed because I had these exercises to use as a handy guide. Good luck to you!

What a wonderful resource! I checked this out at the library for my 2 year old son to combine with his lesson plan at home. Creating the letters together has helped him to understand what they mean. He loves to play with the crafts after I make them and at the end of the week I tape them to his wall to look at. It's such a great book! I will have to see if Judy Press has done others like it.

I love this book. My 4 year old twins look forward to the art projects everyday. Even my almost two year old participates! My favorite part is that the projects use items that any house with preschoolers will have: construction paper, glue, paint, empty toilet paper rolls, paper plates, ect. Don't skip out on the finger plays. My kids love to move like the animals they have made in the projects. A must have for parents of preschoolers!

This was a fun book to use with my daughter when she was learning her letters. It gave me lots of creative things to do for all the letters and my daughter loved doing all the crafts. We ended up tracing all the letters and decorating them as suggested and put them along the wall of the playroom. My younger son now always points to them on the wall and tries to sing his ABC's. I would definitely recommend it! It's a great, fun learning tool.

I obsessed over this book wile I was pregnant and finally bought it for my daughter's second birthday (it was really for me). She's 2 and half and, although she isn't coordinated enough to really do a whole lot on her own, we have great fun with this book. She pulls it down from the bookshelf herself and looks through it. The illustrations are great and the instructions are easy enough for an adult to follow. I delegate the gluing and some coloring to her and we discuss shapes and colors--as well as letters and numbers-- while assembling the pieces. While not all (but most) of the materials are easily found around the house, I have found the ones that aren't in dollar and discount stores for next to nothing. She loves watching ordinary household items like an empty toilet paper roll transform into an alligator with some tape, a marker, scissors, green paper and glue. Her eyes light up like I'm performing magic. I have read, in teachers' journals and the like, that children retain information better when it is presented in a way that emotionally impacts them. For myself and my child, this book was well worth it, and I intend to look into some other titles by this author and from Williamson. Publishing.

Can Arthur keep his new pup from being sent away?

In a story that many young readers will identify with, Arthur has a new puppy who misbehaves, as puppies often do! Arthur sets about training him, and brings about a wonderful transformation that amazes everyone, with a fun twist at the conclusion.

If your children are fans of the wonderful TV series, this book is sure to appeal to them.

[...]. It is a good book for kids because it helps kids read. It is funny. Arthur gets a new puppy because his mother said he could. Arthur had to give five dollars for the puppy. Arthur was happy to have a puppy. He had been watching a puppy that gave birth to a litter of new puppies and Author got to keep one. I think everyone would enjoy this story, especially if you like puppies!

While children love reading fantastic stories of dragons oraliens or dinosaurs, that doesn't mean they don't also enjoy readingbooks featuring kids just like them.

Or, in the case of the popular Arthur books, aardvarks just like them. Arthur's New Puppy is the eighteenth book in the best-selling series. It follows the misadventures of the lovable aardvark as he attempts to housebreak his bouncy puppy Pal.

Children seem to identify with Arthur as he struggles with everyday problems with the help of his loving parents (and no help from his pesky little sister, D.W.) and friends.

If you have an Arthur fan in the house, or if you have a new puppy in the house, you'll want to check out this book.

Great mystery for children

Review Date: 2002-09-20
This was the first real mystery story I ever read, when I was about eight or nine years old, and I madly adored it, except that for some reason the part about the grating brick freaked me out. It has never scared any other child I know who read the book, but for some reason after reading that I couldn't go to sleep for a long time many nights! It really is a well-thought-out mystery - I always thought it was, but after it scared me I didn't dare to read it again for years!

But last week I read it again, and enjoyed it very much again. Of course nothing is as exciting to the adult mind in such a book as it is to a child, but I can still see the appeal in the story and get pleasure from reading it all the same.

Basically the story is... Grandfather's "Surprise Island" has a little yellow house on it. The children sense there is a mystery about it, so they ask Grandfather to tell them about it. He says that a man named Bill lived there with his wife. He disappeared one day, presumably with a large amount of money, and no one was ever able to find where he went. But the Boxcar children are always ready for a challenge and they set off to look for Bill.

Excellent story that all boys and girls should read or have read to them.

The Alden children go camping and solve a mystery

Review Date: 2006-10-20
In this third entry in the Boxcar Children series the Alden children (Henry 16, Jessie 14, Violet 12 and Benny 7), ask their grandfather about the mysterious yellow house on their island. He tells them a story about the long missing Bill McGregor, husband of the family housekeeper. The children and their cousin Joe and his new bride Alice decide to locate the missing man when they uncover an overlooked clue to his whereabouts. The six set out to Maine following the clue and along the way have many adventures.

This book was originally written in 1953 by a teacher who combined a basic vocabulary and exciting storyline in order to entice young readers. Her formula was and is a great success. To an adult the mysteries involved are rather simplistic, the situations more than a little unrealistic and the characters quite wooden but to the children the stories are written for these are exciting stories with thrilling adventures around every twist and turn. Just the thing to get a reluctant reader inspired to read for fun.

In the early sixties one of my teachers kept our 5th grade class entralled by reading to us the last few minutes of each day. The Boxcar Children were always a popular choice, the short cliffhanger style chapters kept us anxiously waiting for the next reading and stirred up more than a few schoolyard discussions on what might happen next. It inspired me to go canoe camping in the northwoods years later and share that adventure and The Boxcar Children with my children.

I've learned how my children show & feel their own emotions

I am a single mother of two, recently divorced. In reading this book, it reminded me of how much my children were hurting during the divorce and still are hurting now, even after the divorce. "But... What About Me!" demonstrates how important it is for us as parents to recognize and acknowledge our children's feelings during and even after divorce, so that they don't take the load of responsibility that was never intended for them to carry. Certainly, "But... What About Me!" touched my heart.

My original feeling was that this book would be a great book to read to my children. I felt that it would help open the lines of communication between children and their parents during and after divorce. But now that I have read this book to my sons, I have a much deeper appreciation for its content and simplicity.

Each day when I come home from work, my older son, age 6, meets me at the door with the book asking me to read it to him. He now uses the words "But... what about me" when he is feeling insecure about where he is emotionally and what's happening to and around him. The words and illustrations which obviously offer him comfort seem to have made this book his "best friend." For me, it has opened up a wonderful opportunity to spend real quality time with my children and really learn how they are feeling on many different levels. As a result of our time together with this book, I've learned about how they show and feel insecurity, sadness, fear and loneliness - things I didn't see or understand before. I cherish the new understanding and closeness this book has provided to my children and me.

Great reading for ALL families

But... What About Me! (How It Feels To Be a Kid in Divorce) is an excellent book for all families. Too often we adults only focus on our thoughts and feelings, and unintentionally forget about how our actions affect our children.

This book takes a difficult and complex issue and breaks it down into simple terms that are beneficial for both adults and children. It enables adults to regroup and recognize what their child is experiencing, so they can ease the pain of their child. It also helps children to realize they are not the cause of the problems their family is experiencing.

At a minimum, the book will assist families to work through a divorce in as civil a manner as possible and help all involve emotionally. Hopefully ALL families will purchase this book to help them deal with family issues before they have to go through the pain of divorce.

I believe But... What About Me! (How It Feels To Be a Kid in Divorce) is not only beneficial for families going through a divorce, but it is also beneficial for all families to read to help them AVOID divorce.

I enjoyed this book thoroughly and found it very enlightening. As a person with several friends in the various stages of the divorce process, I felt compelled to give this book a read-through. I was impressed by how both the writing and the illustrations were done with an emphasis on the child reader. As a result, I purchased several copies for friends, as well as, a copy for a local crisis center. As a person who has never gone through the pain of a parents' divorce, the book also gave me a new perspective on what really happens to a family when a marriage ends. I recommend any parent who might be just only "considering" a divorce or even a separation make it a point to read this book and then take the next step by sharing it with their child(ren).

Goes Right To The Heart!

Review Date: 2000-09-21
This book touched me with its simplicity to such a deep emotional happening in a family's life. It touched me personally because I have lived through it and probably did not handle it very well. I can hear my children's voices in this very alive stick figure child, but these are voices I did not hear at the time because I was too caught up in my own emotions. But...What About Me? gets to the heart of the matter of a child affected by divorce and hopefully will trigger a wakeup call to the parents to help the children they both love, to feel loved and not torn apart. The book and the workshops are so needed in this world where divorce is the norm rather than not, and encourages maturity and selflessness in handling a child's whole world turned upside down. The personalities and emotions shown in the illustrator's drawings, combined with the author's words from the mind of a very hurt and confused child, tells the whole story!

Should be read by anyone who has experienced this situation.

I am a 13-year-old who recently read this book. I think it's a great story that portrays what it's like to be "the kid in the middle." As I read it, it reminded me of how many children there are in this world that have parents go through divorce and have the same feelings as the character in the book. I have never actually been in this situation, but have friends that have, and it tears them apart. If only they had this book at the time, I think it would have benefited them in many ways. I think it would have helped their parents to learn to communicate with one another and their children. This book is an exceptional book and should be read by anyone who has ever experienced this situation.

Dr. Hope uses an inanimate object to teach a very animated lesson.

Chip's dream is to be in the home of a child where he can help educate. He has so much to teach and share, but it appears that it is never to be.

Events bring him so close to being in the home of two children, but once again he is left on the shelf. An old copy machine teaches him to believe and hold on to his dream. Never losing sight of the mark puts Chip into a place where he can teach loads of children. We could all learn a thing about holding onto our dreams from this book.

Armchair Interviews says: Written in Spanish and English, the book is fun and colorful.

Wow, where to begin, well first of as the title explains I wish I owned this book when I was 13. I would've felt a lot more normal about crushes and boys than I did. Not to mention as the book explains we even act differently when you have a crush on someone. A lot of times i would read a page and just say to myself Wow! Now I get it! Not to mention is was hilarious having all of the silly "Which is worse?" ultimatums, I enjoyed sitting with my friends during my off period going over them and laughing. Although this book made me laugh a lot another thing that I loved about this book is that it included astrology. Astrology is one of my favorite sciences, that and numerology. It's always interesting to see science combined in everyday life. This book was not only a learning experience but also a reminder of how weird we all really AREN'T. The chick who fell in love with Mr. Social Studies was the real wakeup call for me(pg.23).This book was humorous and fun and is a good short read for any girl who is learning the joy of having a crush or, maybe wants to learn to say I love you in more than 10 different languages.

I liked this book because it had some very good tips for girls, and it
was very well written. The only thing I didn't like about this book was
that there were pages where you were supposed to write in answers to
questions. I would not have included those pages, but there were only a
couple of them, so it didn't make that much of a difference.
Throughout the books, there are quotes from teens on their experiences. I
really liked that those were there because it was very interesting to read
real-life experiences from people just like me. Overall, I really enjoyed
these books.

The thing I can't stand most about dating books is when they take themselves way too seriously. Luckily these this book doesn't, and it's an entertaining read!

Crush reminds you what it's like to flirt or how to pick up on body language cues. I caught myself giggling on the how to stalk without stalking your crush. Trust me, getting the lowdown on a crush without seeming like a creepy groupie is hard.

There's also quite a few cool tips for first date locations and activities, crafty gift ideas, and so on. Honestly, the best section is "Warning Signs: 10 Ways to Tell He's Not Really Into You." Why? Because I think at some point in time we've all emailed or texted someone a little too much.

So whether you're a tween or teen headed for the dating scene for the first time, or you're much older but ready for Cupid to smack you upside the head with a love arrow, this book is chock full of great ideas and surprises for your next big swoonfest.

This straight-shooting guide to how to handle those uncontrollable crushes skips the puff stuff for advice that resonates with the strong, smart girl. With "Crush", there's no excuse for stealing your BFF's boyfriend or waiting by the phone. Instead, Conley reminds her readers to "Want a lot out of life, and expect that you will get it." It's not that she leaves out the girly fun, ("Carry lip gloss. Never leave home without it," she writes) but Conley supports such bits with sound advice ("Have confidence. It's even better than lip gloss") to provide readers with a refreshingly healthy--never desperate--point of view.

This is precisely the kind of book I want for my sons. It does a great job of explaining a memorable sports moment and conveys exactly what's so great about the game of baseball. Now, if they could just come out with the story of the Boston Red Sox...

This book is absolutely fantastic - simple words, big illustrations, and captures the exceitment of a sporting event. Even though I am not a Dodger's fan, the value to reading the book is in introducing a sport to my kid. For me, it is a great way to spend quality time with my daughter with a topic that I really enjoy as well.

Awaiting the next book...

Great book!! An amazing way for parent's to spend time reading to their children but the plus is that they will be reading about a great moment in sports, magnificently illustrated, and will be able to relate the passion and the excitement of a story well written. I wiil definetly have several copies in my waiting rooms. The combination of an intellectual activity(reading) and sports will fit our society well. G Garcia-Cabrero.

What a book! My four year-old son picks it from several hundred books in his library over and over again. I can't even count how many times I've read it. The story line is well written and based on actual sports history. The creatively done illustrations keep my little guy glued to the page. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone and for the father with young boys...it is a MUST!

I bought this book for my 8 year old granddaughters but before giving it to them I decided to read it myself. I could not put it down. It is very well written, thorough and entertaining. Also, the suggested activities are very helpful. I highly recomend it not just for children but for adults who want to get acquainted with the life of Darwin and with his theory of evolution.

Different but better than expected.

I was more looking for great activities for my classroom but most of this book is a history of Charles Darwin and his life's work with random activities dispersed throughout. The writing is well done and its an easy read for kids.

A fantastic read (and I'm 44 years old!)

I confess that at the age of 44 I read and was spellbound by Kristan Lawson's book. My wife a museum educator came home with this book. She said, "Look at this book I ordered; what do you think?"

I'm have a minor in biology, so was familiar with Darwin and his theories, but never read anything by him or knew in detail anything about his life. I started flipping through the book and was instantly hooked. I read it in two sittings and must say it is well written entertaining and filled in many gaps in my knowledge of Darwin, his life, and the impact he had on the world.

Some things which intrigued me:
1. He was a miserable student in college
2. He wrote many books on many subjects
3. He spent 8 years studying and writing about barnacles!
4. He wrote the first book on carnivorous plants.
5. His last and most popular book was on the lowly earthworm, which European gardeners snapped up!
6. Finally, he was a very shy and timid man who hated publicity and would not debate his ideas in public.

This is a great read for anyone who knows a little about Darwin, but does not have a complete picture of who he was. A pure pleasure of a read!

This is an outstanding book for children, and adults as well. This wonderfully laid out science book, succinctly addresses the "when, where, why, and how" life on this planet began. By encouraging readers to define the difference between theories and beliefs, facts and opinions, "Darwin and Evolution for Kids" addresses religiously inspired debates with fact and eloquently and tells the story of evolution.

The absolute best book on evolution for kids or adults

I was absolutely floored by how good this book was as both a biography and also an introduction to the basic arguments, counterarguments, challenges, and triumphs of the theory of evolution. Every major objection is touched on: half a wing, the divine watchmaker, the "lack" of transitional forms, "blending" of mutations back into the wild type. The book even covers the Scopes trial, the modern synthesis, and the issue of Social Darwinism. And the story of Darwin himself is compellingly and fairly told. The theory itself is explained in straightforward terms that are easily understood, and the objections are dealt with intellgently and rationally.

Bravo, Kristan Lawson. This book is a tour de force of clear explanation and fascinating character study.

The fourth novel in the Children of the Lamp series features the terracotta warriors, thousands of six foot tall clay statues buried with the Chinese Emperor of Qin, somewhere back in 210 BC. These statues were for protection as well as to ensure that the Emperor had a full army at his disposal in the afterlife. As the story goes, someone is reanimating these ancient warriors, and possessing them with evil spirits.

Meanwhile, on the good Djinn side, Djinn twins John and Phillipa Gaunt, their Uncle Nimrod and the crew head off to find Faustina Sachertorte (who is in the Djinn equivalent of suspended animation) in the hopes of reviving her to take the place of the twins' mother as the hard-hearted and extremely logical Blue Djinn of Babylon. This requires careful planning, because their father is under a Methusaleh binding that makes him age rapidly once the twins aren't at home, which of course they aren't.

Back on the other side, Faustina's brother Dybbuk is acting up, misusing his powers in exchange for fifteen minutes of fame as the next (and much improved) David Copperfield. Unfortunately his antics are noticed by his father, Iblis, the leader of the Ifrit (a.k.a. the really bad Djinn) and before he realizes it, Dybbuk is being used to set up a really big scam that could change the balance of good and evil.

Better than book three, Cobra King Of Kathmandu (Children Of The Lamp), this one takes the reader to exotic locations with exotic food, contains a lot of surprises, and features two very famous gentlemen from the past. The action-packed adventure comes to a dramatic pause at the end, which is clearly not the end of the story, but the way forward to the next book. Fans of the series won't be disappointed with this one.
