I used this book with my 8 year old. It was simple enough so that he could follow along while I read yet specific enough so that he could relate and get a sense that he was not alone in being anxious and how to go about feeling better. It had enough humor to keep a child interested yet not so much humor that the child felt like his worries were being made fun of. It helped me to learn new ways to help my child when he was worried. Before I would say that things would be ok. That didn't help. With new tools, I can help him calm down and build skills he can use for the rest of his life.

This book gave my 8 year old the tools necessary to understand and combat her worries. Within a week, we saw an amazing transformation in her ability to manage her worries as well as her body's reaction to those worries. Excellent resource.

This book was just what our family needed. My seven year old couldn't get enough of it. We saw a difference almost immediately. It helped her gain control of what she thought were impossible situations. We still re-read the book as needed. She was diagnosed with OCD recently, but because of the book, she already had a firm foundation for fighting her "worry bullies", and responded dramatically to therapy. I would recommend this book for all kids - from the ones that have just run of the mill anxieties to sudden on-set anxiety caused by a traumatic change to kids that have serious anxiety related disorders.

This is a terrific book -- I use it with my 6-year-old, who really engages with it. It addresses the origins of worries & strategies for controlling worries, all in a very kid-approachable way. Each chapter ends with a space for the child to draw a picture of something related to his/her worries. The book has helped me talk more concretely and openly with my child about worrying.

If you are a parent of a child with anxiety, you know how it can feel like your family is held hostage by your child's worries! This book saved our family! It was recommended by our child's therapist and I just can't say enough about it. It is written for kids to understand, but it is not condescending so even an older child or teen would benefit from it. Several specific strategies are described in the book. We saw improvements almost immediately and within a month or two, our daughter had actually retrained her brain and she is now a different child. Now, if we see the anxiety coming, all we have to do is mention a few specific words and she is back on track!

I read this book five or more years ago, and I loved it. It is one of my most favorite books, I could relate with Ellen so much, and I think anyone can, being in love with someone so much, and yet nothing works out. I think this book should almost be required reading for young girls.

I read this book when I was 12; I still remember the day I bought it. I sat in my bedroom all weekend reading it. I loved it so much, I wanted to be just like Ellen. Every girl has a Michael Tyler in their lives! I have read this book every Christmas for the last 14 years. I just purchased a new copy to give to my daughter when she's a little older. I'll never part with mine.

I purchased this book in the winter of my 7th grade year. The story made such an impact on me at that time in my life that it quickly became a favorite. I have continued to re-read the book every Christmas, and it has become my own holiday tradition. Now, at the age of 25, my Christmas holiday just doesn't seem complete without my yearly read of this innocent love story. I have read the story over at least 10 times and thoroughly enjoy it each time. It's my guilty pleasure!

Love the historical/background information. This is a good resource for helping today's kids identify with the Bible's historical figures, cultures, and lessons. Without completely altering the poetic language, it offers activities and ideas to improve comprehension and help children see the relevance of the text to their own lives.

I purchased this as a first bible for my 6 year old son. There are bursts of fast facts and passages paraphrased to make it easier for browsing. My son enjoys reading these and even for adults like myself, the background informations are helpful.
The generous amount of illustrations captures his attention and aids in his comprehension of certain passages of the bible.
I can surely say this is the best thing I've bought for my son.

I am a huge Alias fan. I found this book to be a great addition to my Alias collection. The book is very interesting with details about the characters, actors, design sets, and just about everything. I was interested in how some of the actors and actresses have kind of created their own characters behind the "script". It was a very fun and exciting read. I would reccomend this to anyone who is a fan of alias. You will not be disappointed as this book is entertaining AND informative, which is quite hard to find these days. If you enjoy Alias, you will love this book.

People have been going on to me to watch "Alias" for some time, So having purchased the 1st 2 Season from Amazon UK, I sat down to watch them.
Nearly through Season 1, a friend told me about a making book on the first season, but had never brought it, so I search Amazon UK and it wasn't listed. I then came to Amazon US, and found it and took the plunge and ordered it.
It arrived within a Week and the book included the DVD.
If you like the series and wonder whats goes on behind the scences of a TV series like Alias, then this is the book to buy.
The DVD gives gives you some small interviews and breif look behind the scence, which is an added bonus, but it is the book that has the pulling power.

This is a great book for anyone that is hooked on the spy show, Alias. I didn't start watching until the second season, so I got it to give me background on the episodes, characters, and stories. There's lots of great behind the scenes info, and facts about the cast. It's a fun, must have book for everyone that's been sucked into the world of Alias!

Naturally, I bought this book because I loved the show, and wanted to know more about what goes on behind the scenes of this underrated drama/action/suspense thriller. Every episode brings out an edge-of-your-seat feeling, and it makes you wish that the hour was much longer. This book was great, it even includes a cd-rom so you can watch a few extras. It also includes storyboards and costume designs (still, I wish that there were a few more examples). It also includes an episode guide on every show from season 1, including a few tidbits as well. Certainly a must for any fan of ALIAS, or even for those who appreciate great writing!

The Bears of Blue River is a book I can heartily recommend parents to buy and read to their children. This book, about the many pioneer outdoors experiences of young Balser in the 1820's, is a great way to introduce youngsters to life in a simpler, yet challenging time. My children are captivated as they hang on every word of Balser's bear hunting exploits in the forests of the then-young State of Indiana. My Mother, who is 91 years of age, purchased the book for my young son, and wrote in the forward "Your Grandpa Wayne liked these stories when he was a boy". Eighty-five years later, his 12 year old and 4 year old grandsons are equally enthusiastic. Don't miss this one for your sons!

In 1953 I started first-grade in southern Indiana. My teacher, Pearl Monroe, read Charles Major's 1900 Bears of Blue River to us. She, also, read it to my father in a one-room school house. It was my favorite book. There was one sad part in the book where Mrs. Monroe always cried. She would have an older student finish the chapter. In about 1980, I read it to my kindergarten age son. I also cried when the Polly died in an explosion that killed the dreaded Fire Bear. About five years ago, in a used book store in Colorado. I read it to my father who was in his 80's. Together we enjoyed the memories it brought back. This year I started teaching fourth-grade at the Odessa Christian School here in Odessa, TX - having just retired after 21 years with the pubilc schools. I just finished reading this marvelous adventure story to my class. They all acclaimed that it was the best book they ever heard read. I highly recommend this book and the sequel, Uncle Tom Andy Bill. Donald Potter

This is an amazing book which was recommended to me by a friend who works in Child Protection - the parents of the children have mental health issues which range from learning disabilities to more extreme personality disorders. She sees babies and toddlers who have been abused through neglect; absence of communication; verbal, emotional, physical and sexual abuse. The children suffer a range of disorders from the physical to mental, emotional and social as a result, yet all have degrees of attachment to their abusers, ambivalent attachment and codependency and the patterns of how they are likely to develop are easy to see manifesting in the child that will become the adult if there is no early intervention, if the relationships were to continue between child and parent and if there is a lack of awareness or ability as a growing adult to consciously make efforts to change habitual patterns. This book covers all of these themes. Moreover in the seemingly relatively normal upbringing of a child and then the adult who looks retrospectively at their own childhood and their present relationship with their own children similar issues arise which affect their ability or capacity to love or show an ability to love. This book causes one to self-reflect, analyse and ponder quite deeply how we love because of how we were loved or what we understood or perceived love to be.

Although the book is primarily about child development, Robert Karen adds amazing insights throughout that are absolutley mind boggling. I would highly recommend this to everyone because you will not only understand others, but you will understand yourself. Absolutely love it!

I'm about 2/3 of the way through this, and I must say: I am very impressed. You can learn a lot more from this book about childrearing and how to bring children up to be secure, confident adults that you can from most of the pop psychology and parenting books which present the fad of the day or some catchy opinion that has not been backed up by scientific research. Karen has a rare combination of professional expertise, a wide command of the extensive literature relating to early childhood including psychoanalytic, a real gift for writing, and a willingness to not dodge difficult issues and to be entirely forthright with the reader, without ever underestimating the intelligence of the reader to grapple with the issues he brings up and form their own conclusions. The book does get a bit dense towards the middle, including info that the layperson probably wouldn't want to bother with, but he never loses the narrative thread and I kept reading and learning and being grateful he did such a thorough and well-reasoned job of presenting all this material.

This easy to read book is a good review to those who have backgroud in psychology. It is also a good read for those who are looking for a great introduction of just how important early relationships are. Dr. Karen does a masterful job of presenting complicated material in an easy to read historical narrative style. I have given copies to my friends in the helping professions who report back to me their gratitude for reminding them what is important in life: relationships!

A therapist friend suggested this book. I was surprised and pleased to find it so easy to read. I am kind of grateful, however, that my children are somewhat older now. If I had read this while they were still toddlers, I think it would have pushed me quite over the edge!
But even more than the early separation material, about which I can only say (as most parents, hopefully), "I did my best"; the material on the effects of parental intrusion, and of not allowing children to work things out themselves, is very, very helpful.
This book is really a treasure.

This mysterious and enchanting book takes Alec and Henry to a setting far from the one in the previous book. In the barren deserts of Arabia, they search for their black stallion in his own home. A thrilling tale of survival, and just as vivid, with a race for high stakes and a horse to beat any of the same caliber all thrown in too make the story plot thicken.
This book had me turning the pages, never wanting to put it down. The story was very different from the first, but not as much as some sequels. Farley had a way of keeping his characters in prospective, and in turn, the story again took the readers on an exhilarating ride. A great piece of literature for young tweens to read, though the movie does have violence in it, but seems to make the story even more thrilling. An excellent book I will be sure to show my kids one day.

After a mysterious attempt on the Black's life by an unknown one-armed assassin, Alec is shocked to meet an Arab sheik who claims to be the true owner. Regretfully surrendering the horse he has trained and loves dearly, Alec expects to spend a gloomy summer before his senior year. Conveniently for all concerned racing owner, Mr. Volence, agrees to take both trainer, Henry and the devoted youth abroad to seek better bloodlines for his stables--and incidentally search for the Black in distant Arabia.
Plunged into an exotic world of desert, treachery and bloodlust Alec and his party set out for a remote mountainous region where the Sheik reigns. Alec soon learns the price of betrayal, where blood demands blood, and the great race--held every 5 years--will soon be run. Befriended by a local orphan youth named Raj, Alec's party is abandoned to their fate in the desert, then rescued by a young but suspicious chieftain. How can Alex reach the elusive Sheik and convince him to sell
or gift him the magnificent Black? What will it take to end the bitter feud between rival sheiks? How can an American boy acquire the desert skills necessary to survive and win respect in a hostile environment? This sequel is every bit as exciting as the first book in the series, with hope for future stories, as it explores the wonderful and unique bond between boy and horse.

I read this book back when I was in third grade or so, and absolutely loved it. This series quickly became the far-and-away favorite of my group of friends. Even ten years later, we still have fond recollections of this book and the rest of its series. I definitely recommend this book to any young reader - it is enthralling. If you want your kids to get into fantasy, give them this book!

I have personally only read the first book of this series (the book of names). My older brother bought it from a bookfair, and has only read it once. During a black-out I read it, and instantly fell in love. It kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through-out the book. I re-read it for about the billionth time today, and I have just ordered 2-6 of the series I love it so much. I encourage other people to read it as well, it is an excellent book.

It is a good recourse to have, but don't use it as a "nursing bible" or you will think you are doing EVERYTHING wrong.
I found "What to Expect the 1st Year" had a MUCH better section on breastfeeding that was user friendly and not mean to those that struggle.

Breastfeeding Made Simple is the most important and helpful book I read prior to my daughter's birth

(Review by my wife): Despite taking a breastfeeding class, working with lactation consultants and doing quite a bit of reading on the subject, I never did get my son to latch on properly. As a result, he ended up being hospitalized for jaundice. Everything turned out fine, but the experience really scared me. I wasn't confident that I had the ability to nurture him on my own. Plus, with the exception of my husband, I had little encouragement from others to keep going. As a result, I gave up on breastfeeding the natural way. Instead, I pumped breast milk for him until he was twelve months old. I just felt like I had to see how much milk he was getting. Once I got pregnant with my daughter, I was determined to succeed the next time around. I believe that I am still exclusively breastfeeding her at six months because of Mohrbacher's and Kendall-Tackett's book. The Seven Laws gave me so much insight as to what went wrong with my son Not only did they educate me on how to fix problems that might come up, but more importantly how to prevent many of them. Everything is laid out so logically that you truly walk away with all you need to know about breastfeeding. And sadly, the reality is that you cannot assume that you're going to be taught how to breastfeed during your short postpartum hospital stay. So you really do have to educate yourself. Along with the invaluable hands-on help of lactation consultants, this book is the only one you'll need. In addition to its wisdom, the other great gift of this book is how it empowers you to try and stick with breastfeeding.
A Must Have

The lactation consultant at the hospital I was delivering suggested this book and i'm thankful. It's an excellent book and I believe this book attributed to my ease of breastfeeding. I got this book for 2 other new mothers hoping it would be as helpful to them.

This book is so amazing! I'm in training to become a doula and this book was one of the books we were required to read, so I bought it not thinking twice about it. I have 4 children of my own and nursed all of them, so I didn't think this book was going to teach me much since I have a lot of experience with breastfeeding and overcoming problems, but boy was I wrong!!! This book has so much information that in hindsight would have saved me a lot of difficulties and would have made things very simple - the way it should be and can be! If you are pregnant or nursing get this book, don't think twice about it, you will not regret it. The pictures seems like from the 70's, but hey, I don't think nursing positions have changed much since man kind was created, so who cares if the hair styles and the wardrobes in the pictures are outdated. The nursing positions are the focus anyway, therefore the pictures are very helpful regardless of when they were taken.

A Child's Garden of VersesI had this book of poems as a child and loved it dearly. I recently purchased this newer (artwork) version of my favorite book, and WOW was I surprised. The artwork was beautiful and added greatly to the beautiful verses. I am sure that not only the baby that I gifted this to, but his parents will love the book (and artwork) as much as I still love mine. Thank You.

To wander through your childhood, as I recently did, I highly recommend Robert Louis Stevenson's, "A Child's Garden of Verses". The illustrations combined with the poetry reminded me of my first introduction to poetry. That early experience instilled a life long love of poetry in myself which I passed along to my children. My son has become "the family poet" so I purchased this volume for him for Christmas. Poetry conveys in a few eloquent words the emotions that no other form of writing can. We would be much poorer humans without this medium.
