Children's Books

As the mother of a special needs, medically fragile child, I appreciate the honest writing of the essays in the book. Most of them are great. However I found a couple offensive--and I'm not easily offended. A couple parents assume that having kids with physical and easily recognizable disabilities is easier than having a child with an "invisible" disability. Even going so far as to say it's easy for schools to accommodate a child in a wheel chair. Anyone whose dealt with the public school system knows that's not true. I know there is a tendency to feel like your child's disability is worse than any other and that the grass is always greener. But we are one big special needs family and perhaps divisive essays should not have been included.

As a parent who contributed a personal story to this book, I was so delighted to read what all the other parents who contributed had to say. I could find a piece of myself or my child in every story. I agree that this should be required reading for all educational professionals before they enter a classroom.

True to life stories of how parents deal with these kids. You go from one story to the next. I found it impossible to put down and I don't even have children!

I never write reviews but felt the need for this one. I recommend this book for any parent who is struggling with the ups and downs of raising a special needs child. This book has many stories about many real people, stories you relate to, or make you cry in happiness, or even sadness when you look at the gravity of your own situation. The strength of other parents is inspiring. This is a great book. I wish there were more of these!

This book, "The Elephant in the Playroom" is a true portrayal of exactly how "special" all these kids are! Each family and child described is wonderfully unique and interesting. As a special education aide, I laughed, commiserated, and understood each of these stories! This book is a valuable resource for anyone in contact with special needs children!!

I'm an avid pop up collector (or my little boy is, but I get as excited as he does when we get another one) and this is as wonderful as the other Sabuda books. It's holding up well even though I have to pretend to attack my son whenever we get to the huge set of shark jaws; these books are not as fragile as you'd think.

My sons got this book along with The Jungle Book for Christmas. These books are works of art. They combine amazing pop-up art with a good story. My kids love these books. I plan to give away copies of Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart's work to other folks in the future. Makes really memorable gifts.

I collect megaladon teeth too.The biggest one I have is a replica of a 10 1/2 inch megaladon tooth I bought on ebay.I bought some real teeth too that are over 5 inches and are 200-300 and up.Some teeth are over $20,000 the 10 1/2 inch one probably is really expensive even with it chipped off and 7 inches is what the average biggest complete teeth found is"and they are in the 20,000s".

My 6 yr old son received this as a Christmas gift. We all fell in love with it - even my 2 yr old! Being an Encyclopedia it is filled with information and the pop out pictures are fantastic, plus they grab the children's interest easily. I was amazed at the detail and quality of the pop outs. There are tiny books within the pages that also have tiny detailed pop outs. These books are going to be kept for a long time!

Absolutely gorgeous and intriguing pop-ups. Good information about the sharks and sea monsters. I love all things by Robert Sabuda. Good for kids 4 and older.

Gave this book to my Tween daughter. I think this book will help with a lot of the problems they will come in contact with.

Along with physicl changes, a young girl will be thrown into emotional changes which will be better understood if she reads this little book. Mothers love the printed work to go along with the 'little talks' that need to happen as a young lady enters her preteen years. Well written and definately speaks to young girls.

My eight year old and I are working on reading this book together. It has helped her learn how to calm herself down. We will be reading this book several times over the next few years.

I absolutely adored this book when I was little, so of course I was pleased when one of my first graders picked it up at the school library and beged me to read it for our class read-aloud this afternoon. Since we have recently discussed thinking about characters' emotions as we read, this was a perfect exercise--the text never actually says just what the cute little dog Harry is feeling during his adventure of getting dirty. And if you think about it, his tale is quite poignant. Anway, comprehension lessons aside, my kids were glued to the story and we had a great discussion afterwards. The writing is brisk and fun and subtle, leaving plenty to the readers' assumptions. The black and white pictures are adorable, detailed, and full of expression. Really, not many people write like this anymore.

Harry the Dirty Dog was undoubtedly a favorite of my children 25 years ago. I read it over and over. Despite the repitition, I also love this book. There is a rhythmn to the prose that makes it as fun to read as it is to listen to. I'm thrilled to see it again so that I may purchase it for my grandchild.

Our household has the whole series of the Harry books and I wouldn't have it any other way! I found an old copy at the local library and the first night I read it my daughter didn't make a PEEP she was utterly captivated and shes 2 and a half for 3 months she'd call "Harry Harry Harry" just like in "Harry by the Sea". If you love dogs, you'll love Harry!

This was one of my favorite books as a child in Australia. Now as a father in America, it has become on of my childrens' favorite books too. Give your children (and yourself) a lifetime of smiles and warm fuzzies with this one.

Poor Harry, he likes everything but taking a bath. He's got white hair with black spots. One day, he meanders around town and finds nothing but dirt. By the time he winds up home, he is filthy and no one recognizes him -- he's now got "black" hair and white spots. Harry can't believe they don't recognize his tricks and then he decides to get the dog brush and race up to the tub. Lo and behold, a little soap and water, and suddenly the family realizes its Harry. Boy, are they happy he's home. This is a fun book with wonderful illustrations. We have an original first edition of the book and my three children and I love reading about Harry. The little one, 2 1/2, loves pointing at a dirty Harry and asking "is that Harry?". When I answer yes, he is always quite relieved.

This book was EXCELLENT!! I love it!

The excitement of the book kept me reading!! Even thought there was fictional parts in the book, like how Man O' War's Dam was not gentle and sweet but nervous and A LOT like her Sire. And other fictional things like how the new owner did not see Man O' War until after he bought him. Even though these things were false in the story, I think it is great and helps people learn the life of one of the greatest horses in history!! When I read the book I felt like I was there, And I love when books help you do that! I really hope they can mke more books like this on othr famous horses!

I was able to enjoy this book immensely! The details Walter Farley gave were incredible. You didn't miss a thing! You always knew everything that was going on with Man O' War. There wasn't too much detail either. It wasn't 350 pages of blah. In this book you were able to live through all of the races, dissapointment, and momentous occasions of Man O' War and his stable hand Danny. Danny was a loyal young man who more than anything wanted to be with his horse Man O' War. Any horse lover who has a special horse close to their heart or just loves horses in general will be able to relate to Danny's love for Man O' War!
I definitely recommend Man O' War as a must read for any horse lover!

This is one of my favorite books ever. I read it a few years ago (in 8th grade), and am still looking for another racehorse book like it. Farley throws you into the story of a colt and his groom. Although in real life, Danny didn't exist, "Red" did and the information on the horse and his races is true. It gives all of the history without getting boring and sounding like a History book. I think everyone who even just likes horses should read it.

I adore this book, though it is not completely factual. Of course, Walter Farley never says it was:) It is extremely well written and I strongly recommend it to everyone who enjoys Walter Farley's books, horse racing, Man O'War, or just plain horses!

However, there are a few little facts that are incorrect. In the book it is mentioned that Mahubah, Man O'War's dam, is a gentle, good-natured mare that they bred to "tame the hot blood of Hastings". But in real life, Mahubah was noted to be a nervous, rather high-strung mare, much like her father Rock Sand. Rock Sand was very alert and nervous and had to literally have a padded stall because he would pace and kick so much they worried he would injure himself!

Second, Mr. Riddle did not see Man O'War until after he was purchased. He had an agent buy him at the Saratoga Sale.

Also, I think Walter Farley should have given some credit to Preston M. Burch and his book "Training Thoroughbred Horses" because Man O'War's entire training process was copied step-by-step from that book (which I also own).

Overall though, a great book and one of my favorites by the author. Very much recommended and enjoyed!

Brutally honest and told with heartfelt emotion, Mothering Mother is a great memoir dealing with the care of an ill, dependent parent. Witty, inspirational, relevant; we can all learn a valuable lesson about compassion from this story. Five stars

My Mother has Parkinsons and this book was so good I had to buy 4 more books for my 4 sisters to read. I felt like I wrote it myself.It was like reading what I do everyday,but coming from someone else, who went through the same siuation as my family is right now. I could not put it down and was upset when I was finished it.

Mothering Mother by Carol D. O'Dell is the author's story of caring for her 90 year old mother who suffered from Parkinson's disease with a couple of years of Alzheimers thrown into mix to keep things interesting. It's a great book and should be on every caregiver's bookshelf. Coincidentally, O'Dell lives here in Jacksonville. When she wrote about walking along the river to clear her head, I imagined she was just down the street. Feeling like we were neighbors who could wave to each other on the occasional outing, made her story even more recognizable somehow.

Not that it was difficult to believe what the author was saying. She wrote honestly, with both humor and candor, about a situation that was neither pretty nor easy. Amazingly O'Dell wrote her book while still raising teenage daughters and going to school herself. What I can't quite figure out is how she managed to care for and clean up after her mother day after day and still have the energy for normal things like shopping, attending church and making love to her husband. I think it helped that her husband was, without a doubt, her best advocate. I like to read about husbands like that.

The similarities in our situations stop with the age of our respective parents, yet O'Dell wrote about my life. In fact, she nailed the business of parenting a parent. Watching the person who raised you cross a somewhat obscure line to become a childlike version of someone you once believed hung the moon is not for sissies. O'Dell paints a word picture with poignant detail. She wrote the story I'd like to write but lack the confidence and know-how.

Mothering Mother is Carol O'Dell's "humorous and heartbreaking memoir" in journal format through the last three years of her mother's life. This is not a fun or easy book to read. These are things we don't want to think about, but eventually have to, and it helps to have a guidebook, the benefit of someone else's experience and hard-won wisdom. It is the writer's gift to face challenges head-on; to write through the darkness for survival and sanity; and to share the adventure.

O'Dell is a naturally skilled and talented writer, with the ability to document her mother's decline and her own emotions and turmoil in brutal honesty, with often shocking detail, and yet, there is humor here, even at the worst moments, and love overall.

"If you are considering home care for an infirm or elderly dependent, Mothering Mother is a not-to-be-missed memoir and helpful "how-to." [I would say "how-to-survive."]

As children many of us see our parents as almost superhuman beings. In the best circumstances, parents are big, strong, and they take care of us - hold us when we cry, bandage our scrapes, and teach us how to ride bikes. They're always there and a time when they would not be probably never occurs to us.

For many young adults their parents are still nurturers, their childhood homes are still warm places, familiar rooms they visit. Even in those years they may not think that some day roles will be reversed - they will be the care givers for once independent parents who now need to be looked after. This is uncharted territory for most, and it takes a great deal of adjustment. Yet, we can learn from others such as the forthright narrative by Carol O'Dell which tells the story of how she coped and cried when she became the parent and her adoptive mother became a child.

While many offspring who are care givers may find a suitable nursing home or even day care for their aged parents, O'Dell took Noveline, her ill 89-year-old mother, into her home, a home the author shared with her husband and three daughters. The demands of her growing family were already a full-time job - caring for her mother was one more tremendous task.

The author realized that she was going to have to find additional strength from somewhere, and she sought it in nature. We read: "Water is my element, and this holy land that sits on the edge of the sea and sky touches something deep within me. Something in me knows that if I'm going to do more than just get through this, if I'm actually going to thrive, I will need nature to nurture me."

And thrive she did although there were total embarrassments, utter frustrations, and abject degradation. O'Dell spares the reader nothing in her candid picture of what it was like to have Noveline in her home during her declining days. Mothering Mother does not paint a pretty picture but an honest one, sometimes humorous, always inspiring.

Perhaps for Carol O'Dell her book, which is dedicated to her adoptive parents says it all: "Thank you for giving your home, your heart and your lives to a little girl with a fistful of seashells, hoping to belong."

She was given a home and she gave one in return.

Hehe... this is one of the most awsome mangas ever. Its about a little boy who wants to become a pirate. His hero is shanks and fights several enmey who are powerful... buggy, captain kuro, arlong, krieg, crocodile, mr 1-5, lucci, and enel...( i may have forgot some.) Anyways, he finds new abilities and funny ways to fight enemy pirates... BUY IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

One piece is one of the most popular Shonen Jump mangas, and Eiichiro Oda is still managing to make new volumes of the series. After re-reading this volume, I have came to the conclusion that this is a series that I want to be a fan of. Everything was well plotted. Luffy reminds me a little bit of the young Goku of Dragon Ball. There is quite a bit of humor, but it didn't really make me laugh. It did, however, make the scenes better.

Luffy wants to be the king of pirates, and he has to get the treasure of One Piece. But first, he must get a crew. This is where Zoro comes in. A bounty hunter arrested for saving a little girl from Captain Morgan of the Navy's son's dogs. After Zoro joins the crew, Zoro saves a shipwrecked crew of Captain Buggy, who is also a rubber man. Did I mention that Luffy ate the devil's fruit and now he's like rubber? No? Whatever.

This is an excellent volume. It's one of the best Shonen Manga up to date, but probably not the best. The scenes are better than those dry, desert lands like Trigun. There is humor, and it moves pretty fast paced except when Luffy tries to rescue Zoro and does.

Eiichiro Oda, One Piece: Romance Dawn (ViZ, 1997)

Now, come on, what can be cooler than pirates? Oda kicks off his popular manga series in a way that kind of surprises me: we get the backstory of Monkey D. Luffy, King of the Pirates, before we actually get to the plot. (Well, okay, there's a page or two that sets up the hidden trasure for which the series is named.) A truly pleasant surprise, that-- a manga that actually goes in chronological order! Romance Dawn is the story of how Luffy became a pirate in the first place, his amusing beginnings with his first boat, and the recruiting of his first partner (Zoro). If you've been watching One Piece on Cartoon Network, it's definitely worth digging into the manga-- especially if you wandered in halfway through, like I did. *** ½

One Piece is by many considered to be one of the most popular manga and anime series in the world, and whoever says that is right. This graphic novel holds the first eight chapters of this marvelous manga.

Romance Dawn

Chapter 1: Romance Dawn
As a young boy, Monkey D. Luffy met a band of pirates known as the Red-Haired Pirates, which inspired him to sail the seas in search of a legendary treasure known as One Piece. Read his backstory in this chapter and how his inspiration to be a pirate was sparked.

Chapter 2: They Call Him "Straw Hat Luffy"
Found in a barrel on a pirate ship, Luffy befriends a lowly cabin boy named Koby and helps him get over his fears of his ugly pirate captain, Alvida. Luffy decides to help Koby with his dream of becoming an officer in the navy by sending Alvida packing.

Chapter 3: Enter Zolo: Pirate Hunter
To get Koby to enlist in the Navy, Luffy and Koby sail on a dinghy to a place known as Naval Base island. There, they meet Helmeppo, a sniveling Naval officer and the son of a naval captain and the pirate hunter Zolo, who Luffy wants in his pirate crew. Unfortunately, Zolo declines the offer seeing as pirate hunters and pirates don't mix, not to mention the fact that he's tied to a stake for a whole month for attacking Helmeppo's rabid dogs.

Chapter 4: The Great Captain Morgan
Helmeppo announces that he would execute Zolo in three days, breaking the promise he made to Zolo that if he could live his month scentence, he would set him free. Luffy responds to this by punching him in the face, sending him home to his father, which happens to be an evil naval captain known as Axe-Hand Morgan, who has no care for Luffy until Luffy accidentally breaks a statue of him that took three years to build.

Chapter 5: The King of the Pirates and the Master Swordsman
Koby tries to free Zolo while Luffy looks for his swords. Just as the navy is about to kill Koby and Zolo, Luffy shows up to save the day! We also learn Zolo's backstory.

Chapter 6: Number One
Luffy manages to free Zolo and give him his swords, so the two prepare for a fight with the Navy. Luffy fights Morgan with his incredible stretching powers, and the fight is going well. Zolo reveals his intentions: to be the greatest swordsman to ever live. Just when Luffy is about to defeat Morgan, Helmeppo stops Luffy by threatening to shoot Koby in the head. Luffy is about to punch Helmeppo just as Morgan is about to cut Luffy in two, but Zolo makes short work of an already injured Morgan and Luffy plasters Helmeppo in the face with his famous Gum-Gum Blast. Zolo joins Luffy's crew for freeing him.

Chapter 7: Friends
Luffy and Zolo recuperate after the battle with Morgan at an eatery. The Navy shows up and tell Luffy and Zolo to leave the island. Koby wants to join the Navy still, so when the Navy says for Koby to leave too because he's Luffy's friend, Luffy tells Koby's entire story and how he worked with a pirate to seemingly ruin Koby's chances of getting in the Navy. Koby stops him by punching Luffy in the face, so the two fight until the lieutenant points out that the two are obviously not friends. Koby joins the Navy because he won't travel with Luffy, and Luffy and Zolo sail off.

Chapter 8: Nami
Luffy accidentally gets himself caught by a bird he tries to catch for food, whn Zolo chases after him, he runs into three drowning pirates from the Buggy pirate crew, which hop aboard. Luffy runs into a girl named Nami when the bird drops him, who specializes in robbing pirates.

Awesome start to an awesome series. The only major changes I can find is changing Zoro to Zolo, but that never really bothered me that much.

So yeah, I would suggest buying this.

for a child of any age that has a favorite blanket (blankey)
a plot a young child can follow and relate to.

I read Owen. I would recommend this book. The reason I would recommend it is because it was funny and it made me crack me up. In the book Owen, Owen and Fuzzy were playing captain plunger. They looked silly. This helped me convince me that it was a grate book.

The book seemed so basic that I didn't think it would be important, but the message was positive and our 3.5 and 5.5 year olds really connected with it. Definitely one of the better books that we have gotten them.

This is a review/evaluation of the book as part of an in depth study on children's picture books. I am a third grade teacher and I use this book in my classroom because no kid is ever too old to read a great story like this. I truly think it is a classic!

Evaluation: In addition to the wonderful illustrations, this Caldecott Honor book is also a heart warming story that is very appropriate for young readers. The illustrations and the story are very appealing to children and allows readers to easily identify with the main character and the situation he is in. The illustrations add to the meaning of the text because they emphasis the personality of the characters. They highlight Owen's playfulness and the love that he has for his blanket. They also add to the worries of the adults in the story because their concern shows in the illustrations. The illustrations also extend the text because they are so clear that a student could understand the story without actually reading the text and rely only on the clues from the illustrations. The background settings are also nicely illustrated and accurately detailed because it is easy to compare and contrast when they are in places in their house that is shared by all of the family members and when they are in Owen's room and his play area in the background. Henkes also adds specific details to the setting that compliment the fact that the main characters are mice. This is reflected in the art work they have in their house and the statues they have outside. The illustrations are done with watercolor paints and black pen for the full-color art. This compliments the mood of the book because the illustrations are very colorful and vibrant. Henkes varies the size and number of illustrations on each page to compliment the plot and to reflect the sequence of events that take place. Each illustration is within black outlined boxes that make it easy to follow the progression of the story. The jacket and cover design expresses the theme and spirit of the book without giving away too much detail. The cover design gives some questions as to why a lady may be looking for the small boy and will spark children's curiosity making them want to read the book. The bright yellow and bold title stands out against a bright blue background. This book is very similar to Kevin Henkes other mouse books. All of his characters face some type of childhood problem that teaches them about growing up. His books are easily recognized by children because the title always contains the name of the main character. Readers also become familiar with the characters because they are in several of his books, even if it is only a picture of them with no reference in the story. The illustrations are all very similar in that they are fun and engaging and add to the story. Henkes commonly includes text in the illustrations that may be a character's thoughts or something they are actually saying. The added text is often more humorous than the story itself. Since Henkes is both the author and illustrator of his books, he has the liberty of making his text and illustrations become one and perfectly balance each other. This book is appropriate for the preschool level, but older children will also enjoy it, especially if they had a blanket or other comfort item that they adored in their childhood. Parents will also like the book if they are trying to teach their child the same lesson. This book is a very nice read aloud and should be part of classroom libraries. It should be on a booklist as a must read for students who are about to start kindergarten.

"Owen" is a sweet and thoughtful story on par with all of Kevin Henkes other children's books. Whether you're a teacher looking for a story that students can relate to, a parent searching for a meaninful read for your child, or if you are just in the mood for a story filled with sentiment, you can't go wrong with "Owen."

Will use some of these ideas in my daily life-i got 2 sons (3&1 year) and really some of these ideas weren't new, but in our busy schedule it's good to have a book like this to remind us that all the kids need are play (among all other necessities :))

So many of us have become too caught up in our busy lives to remember that children need to play. This book includes great recommendations and strategies for re-connecting with our children through play. So far, it is helping us with our 4 and 1 year olds--we are finding that using a playful approach is helping us feel better about our relationships with our children.

I loved this book. It gave me a different prospective on raising and understanding my child. It takes practice to get the hang of it but after I read this book, my baby whinned a LOT LESS. He seems happier.

Oh the creative ideas that flow from this book. It also explains the reasons and meaning of playing with kids. My son (2) hid under the bed after his bath the other day. I couldn't get him out no matter how I asked and positively prompted. Urgh! But......I flashed back to some of my reading. I said "Oooh, you look like a SNAKE under that bed! I am a mouse and snakes eat mice! EEK- don't eat me!!! Squeak squeak!" I got on the floor pretending to be so scared of him eating me. He immediately "slithered" hissing from under the bed to "eat" me! We both had our needs met without a hassle! Hooray!

I got more out of this book than I thought I would. I was expecting some hints on playing with small children. But the idea of play as a form of therapy had never crossed my mind. But I am delighted that it did. My son is nearly 5 and suffers with social phobia and selective mutism. With that in mind I jumped ahead to the chapter on 'Encourage their confidence' and discovered the "Poopyhead game". What a fabulously fun way to give a child a bit of power in such a safe way. I tried it with two 5 yr olds. One quiet and shy, the other boisterous and confident. They got to break a funny rule and laugh at me. They felt strong..it was obvious. These kids got that from a completely non physical game. I went from there to the chapter on 'Learn to roughhouse'. My husband plays it with our son, but I wanted some ideas on it for me as this is said to be a wonderful confidence game for shy kids. Well I got a few rules to help create a safe environment and an insight into the emotions attached to the game - playfullness, confidence, determination and power to name but a few, and how I might bring those out. Add to that the connections based on love and trust and it's a winning conbination. I then flicked ahead to the chapter on discipline. I certainly expected (and got) a non smacking approach..but this..it was different, and it worked! I'm used to using 'time-out' with varied success. My son reacts to that just how the author writes it. Word for word. So I gave this new approach a try. Success. The idea of instilling good judgement with clear limits from a young age is empowering to kids and builds confidence. It also lends itself very easily to prevention rather than cure. I've had the book for about one week. I've tried a few new approaches to parenting from the book, and for my son it has switched on the power within. This socially phobic child has attended a pre-school Christmas party (approx 60 people), a visit to a friends house (10 poeple)and sat alone on Santa's knee for a chat and photo for the first time. He did all this with an enthusiasm and confidence unseen in him. I am bursting with pride at his achievements of the last week and our household is much happier and calmer for it. I've still got much more reading to do and am loving the new stratedgies to manage time old parenting issues. My only criticism is that the reading can be a bit heavy going at times. For a book about play, it's not what I would call a light read. But really, it's certainly worth persisting to find the gems within, and I'm looking forward to it.

My boys, ages 6 and 7, love this book. The art work is fantastic, and the story is great. We have read it many times and sometimes we just look at the pictures, which are so full of detail.

I would highly recommend it.

I have all the same things to say as everyone else. I loved this as a kid, my copy was all torn apart, the artwork is stunning, etc., etc.

The story is lovely and teaches a lesson. My 2-year old likes this story because of the illustrations and the COLORS. He likes to name the colors of the goblins. Of course, he does not really understand the story, which is good, because it might be a bit scary for little kids. By the time he does understand, it won't be scary anymore, and he will already have gotten a couple years of enjoyment out of the book just based on the pictures and colors.

I completely recommend this book for all children's libraries and collections.

My children (when they were young) and I LOVE this book. The pictures are beautiful, colorful renditions. The story is one that interests young children, but doesn't frighten them. While this is not the original, full-size art book, it is a very nice printing that can be read and enjoyed many times. I have purchased many copies as gifts and all were appreciated.

I found the story disturbing and no amount of beautiful artwork is going to change that. The goblins plan to steal the rainbow colors, but the flowers beat them to it. Then the flowers lie in wait for the goblins to drown them with the rainbow colors. The rainbow is saved and turns the flowers into colorful creatures as a reward.

Make your own choice, but we are not keeping this book.
