This book is a GREAT human interest story that uses a man's skill-carving, with a family need for a nativity. In the process of carving the characters and the friendliness of a woman and her son, Jonathan changes from a bitter, lonely man to a believer.

Not just for children!!

Each year I buy myself a new Christmas book, looking for something unique..Just ran up on this book at a company book sale and stood in awe as I read the story. I knew this was "the one" for this year. Not only is the story heartwarming but the illustrations are perfect. My children are grown as well as my granddaughters and I plan to buy copies for all of them.

A friend and I are often comparing notes on wonderful new and old books and stories for children (and adults), especially at Christmastime. When I saw this book, I knew it would fill the bill as a perfect gift to her to add to her wonderful collection of children's books. I was right--she loved it. I'd never heard of this story before, but, in my opinion, it should be much better known and read. It's so sweet. I'm certainly sharing it. It's perfect for reading aloud. Again, a real good experience with you folks.

Daniel Handler is one of the best children's authors around. He has a turn of phrase unique to himself and he treats children as young adults. This is literature for the young and is a worthwhile addition to your library. I bought these to read for myself, and am now waiting to introduce them to my children.

Sometimes guardians can't be trusted! The Series of Unfortunate Events will prove that to you. These books are for ages 8 and up. These books couldn't be better if you ask me. They are some of my favorite books and I have every one that goes in the series. Each book takes the kids to a new guardian's house each time. The kids end up in a new towns, and cities, mills, and schools often. When Sunny, Violet, and Klaus Baudelaire were at the beach their parents were at home and then a friend of their parents walks up to them on the beach and tells them that their mansion burnt down and their parents died. Nobody knew how the fire started, but it wasn't caused by something, it was caused by someone. Count Olaf burnt their house down and killed their parents because he was a relative and wanted custody of the kids only because he wanted the enormous fortune that their parents left behind. Count Olaf did get custody. But when the kids told someone what he was doing to them and the police found out, they got a new guardian. Count Olaf then disguised himself so that he could kill or injure all of the kid's new guardians. He wanted to get the kids and their enormous fortune back. But you have to read the series to find out what happens next in these books filled with suspense

well, they started good

I like these @ first, but then I just stopped reading them, and I have no idea why.

Klaus is the middle child in this trio. He is amazingly smart. Violet can build inventions out of anything! And the youngest person in this trio is a girl named Sunny, who has amazingly sharp front teeth.

I love the plot of these books. Count Olaf is a great character and I love to hate him!

I juat have to read the twelfth book and then I've read them all. I definetely plan to read the next book in this series.

The books by Lemonity Snicket are wonderful. They are stories that keep you reading. I have enjoyed reading them. They are stories about three young children who lost their parents in a fire and are sent to different places to live. The first place was with a distant relative....who is Count Olaf. From then on there have been many more places they have had to live and exciting but unfortunate events have happened to them. I would recommend you read them from the first story called, "A Bad Beginning" to the last one which is book #12. I have yet to read that one and do not know what it is called...but they are wonderful stories and will keep you going.

My son read this book when at age 12, we finally began to learn the reasons why he felt so "different." Reading Luke's book he laughed aloud and wanted to share everything Luke had to say. His self-image shot up as he realized he was not alone, indeed not a "freak," but that many other children and adults share the same feelings and frustrations as he. My son became much more outgoing and willing to put himself "out there." He's more accepting of himself and others now. This book really freed my son to embrace who he is. What more could a parent want for their child? Bravo, Luke, for sharing your life! It is a must read for every child/teen with Aspergers and for their teachers, friends and loved ones as well.

This book is written by a 13 year old, and talks about the daily challenges and degrees of variance in children with Aspergers. I hope that my 10 year old will warm up to reading this as I think reading from another child's perspective will help him know he is not the only kid dealing with the social challenges of Aspergers. It was easy to read, and a good book for parents, teachers and caregivers of children on with this autistic related disorder. If you know how they are thinking, it helps you understand how to help you child.

Obi-Wan has at last become the Padawan of Qui-Gon Jinn and is about to leave on his first official mission. Things couldnt be better, right? Think again! The Jedi are kidnapped and taken to Phindar, a planet ruled by a criminal who has people's memories erased. Things only get worse when one of the Jedis falls into his clutches and is slated for a memory wipe!

This is an exciting story and explores further the developing relationship between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon. Auxiliary characters are fun, especially the jovial Derida brothers, and Yoda is present in spirit if not body. There are a few battles but violence is not graphic.

This story is officially the beginning of Qui Gon and Obi Wans master, Padawan relationship. As with just about all of the books in this series, this book comes with a moral, as well as an interesting story. You get the sense of how both Qui Gon, and Obi Wan help each other to grow not only as individuals, but as Jedi knights too. The author does a good job of illustrating the fact that even though Obi Wan and Qui Gon are both loyal members of the Jedi, they both have very different, but accommodating, personality traits.

Finally! Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn has taken thirteen-year-old Obi-Wan Kenobi as a Padawan learner, and they're off on their first mission to the planet Gala, to make sure the planet's governmental elections go smoothly. Then, just as quickly as they take off, their ship is hijacked (uh-oh!) to the planet Phindar. But the good news is, Obi-Wan gets to meet up with his new Phindian friend Guerra Derida, from the previous JA book. They also meet Guerra's sister Paxxi. To paraphrase the Derida brothers... not so! Paxxi is Guerra's equally likable, equally funny brother. Together they work to outwit the Syndicat, an evil organization that controls Phindar by renewing the citizens (wiping their memories) and sending them off to another planet. One of the leaders is the Derida brothers' renewed sister Terra. There are also appearances of the Deridas' gentle mother Duenna. Can they foil the Syndicat's evil, or does renewal await them?

As said in the title, this is THE absolute best JA! It's clever and poignant, with clever characters design and interesting environmental details. Really, it's like nothing you've ever read before. It'll blow you away. And without the Deridas, what would the story be? Garabage? No, something worse than garbage. Even if you think "George Lucas is dumb and Star Wars is just a bunch of idiocy!", you'll love this. I highly recommend it! It rocks! Really. It takes poignance and sci-fi adventures where they've never gone before.

Finally! Qui-Gon has taken Obi-Wan as his Padawan learner, right when Obi-Wan turns thirteen, and they are off on a mission to the planet Phindar, a planet ruled by a group named the Syndicat. The evil members of the group renew people as punishments. That means they wipe their memory, and send them off to another planet far, far way. Pretty cruel, huh? Plus, Obi-Wan gets to meet his Phindian friend Guerra Derida again, and Guerra's sister Paxxi. To paraphrase the two... not so! Paxxi is Guerra's brother, and they are both extremely likable, funny characters. Together the four work to outwit the Syndicat, plus maybe recover Terra's memory. Terra is Paxxi and Guerra's sister, but she has been memory wiped and now leads the Syndicat. Can Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, with help from the Derida brothers, foil the Syndicat's evil? Read The Hidden Past to find out.

I'm serious, read this book! It is THE best in the JA series, and definitely worth your time. You're gonna find it hard to put down, even if you think Star Wars is just a bunch of idiocy. This'll change your mind. Extremely poignant, with clever character designation and interesting environmental details, this may be one of the best books I've ever read. It rocked. Really.

I teach preschool and used this book as an introduction for our post office theme. The reading level is a bit high for my age group, but they really enjoy seeing the different types of mail that pull out of the "envelopes" in the book. Very interactive and fun to read.

I love this book for a couple different reasons. First, I like the idea of reading other people's mail. Second, I like the idea that classic fairy tale characters send each other mail. Third, I like the fact that the letters are not printed within the book, but are in envelopes. This means that you are physically opening each letter.

This book is so much fun. The wicked witch gets junk mail, Cinderella gets a request to publish a book on her life, and Little Bear gets a birthday invite, to name just a few.

Love it!

The anniversary book is significantly larger than the original and so loses some of the charm. However this shallow dip in nursery fairy tales is fun for both the listener and reader. New shrink wrapped books include stationary and 'postage' to encourage the young to build a habit of writing and mailing notes. The story is from a UK perspective and follows a postman who delivers the mail in a community of fairy tale characters. Some of the humor is dated (good for grandparents). Children will enjoy having the book read to them and opening the many envelopes to extract their contents. This book was a favorite of my children back in the late 1980's.

My favorite Christmas story

Although this society comedy is set in the 60's New York era, it is one of my most favorite books. In fact, I checked it out so many times from my hometown library, they finally "gifted" it to me. When I'm down - and it doesn't have to be the holiday season - I pick up this book, and Kerry, the 11 year old who tells his family's story, always lifts my spirit with his sharp observations, and sometimes mistaken verbage. I read it again last night, will re-read certain highlighted areas again, tonight, and highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a light-hearted, witty look as two of New York's most "upper crust" families handle the divorce of Kerry's parents.

I have just ordered 2 copies of The Joyous Season - one to keep and one to share! I have had an old paperback I found in a used book store for 50c but haven't even let myself read it until I just saw it was back in print!!! Also never realized so many people gave it the 5 stars I do, so I have to add my review to the list. If you are even considering this book, just get it!!! You will want to read it over and over, then get another copy to lend!

I first read the Joyous Season when I was a child. I introduced it to my children and it became one of my younger son's favorite book. In fact, his children call me "GaGa." My book club is currently reading it for our September meeting. All comments so far, are they are enjoying it. Too bad as a cultural, we no longer laugh at or write good clean humor!
This book is a treasure. Let your tweens read it!

I first read this book when I was a child. My Mother essentially taught me to read by having me read it aloud to her. I am now on copies three and four; the first one having been lost in a move and the other forgotten in a hotel room on business trip.
I purchased a first edition copy and a paperback since then, and they aren't allowed to leave my house.
It's Dennis's best work I think, and like others, I am mystified that it was never produced on stage or in film. It makes "The Parent Trap" look silly and that's been produced on film twice.
Entertaining, screamingly funny, yet touching, there are subtle nuances throughout the book. Kerry the 10 year old, misses a lot of meanings of the conversation of the Adults and his responses are wonderfully funny.
My favorite parts are the Sunday visit to Daddy, who tries to broil a steak when he is hungover, the 4th of July Clambake at the seashore when the fireworks are set off, and when Missy, Kerry's little sister accidentally gets drunk at her Grandmother Ga-Ga's apartment.
My favorite character is Lulu, the children's nurse, a no-nonsense black Woman Kerry describes as:
"She's colored and elderly and has been with us ever since I was born. She's kind of old-fashioned and hates the N.A.A.C.P. and says she doesn't want to integrate with any white people except Missy and me and that's only because she's paid to. Lulu says that after us she needs a rest, if we don't kill her first, and she wants to retire and move back down South."

Missy smart-mouths the Doorman and:
"Lulu gave her a crack on the tail and said, "Talk with your mouth child, like you was born to." Well it broke me up. Then just as a parting shot, Maxl wet on the rug. Maxl is a Dachsund and smarter than some people, but he can't help it if he has a weak bladder."

The entire book reads this way and there isn't a page that won't have you laughing about something that's going on. It's a peek into 1960's New York with amazing references you'll really love.
It is my favorite book ever and I reread it every year around Christmas.

I've always fascinated by magic. And for those guys who like to entertain the women, will find an absolute importance of magic in their routine. The tricks in this book are ranging in difficulty and definitely require times, energy and whole lot of practices to execute.

I was expecting there will be lots of impromptu magics, the kinds I like to entertain people. Quite dissapointed to find the section to be basic and not very impressive. However, if you are a professional magician without this book, you'll be like a man in LA without a car. Thus I can say that this book is critical and mainly focused for stage magicians.

This book is wonderful for anyone wanting to learn magic tricks. This book explains how each trick will appear to the audience and then gives very detailed instructions with drawings showing each step. I used the information in the book to teach rope tricks to a bunch of third grade cubscouts. The parents were so impressed with the tricks that they wanted to learn them too.

All praise for this is justified

1. For the price it can't be beat
2. For all the information included it can't be beat
3. For included illustrations it can't be beat
4. It includes tricks from about every category in magic

I find it hard to give any book 5 stars but this one definitely deserves it.

If you are interested in magic and want a good book to start or to have for reference just buy this one without further thought.

This is my first magic book and it is fantastic. I've seen my share of amateur and professional magic tricks. This book covers the gamut. In one hour, I found and learned three tricks that I've never seen before. I performed them for co-workers the same day and astonished them.

I've since found a good handful of tricks that are original (to me), don't require great slight-of-hand skills and don't cost money (for props). Now I perform them for friends and strangers and, viola, my circle of friends is growing! Do a few easy-to-learn magic tricks really make one more interesting? I guess so.

And there's the easiest little "Jumping Rubber Band" trick that if you show a child, then teach him how to do it (sorry, I broke the first rule of magic), you'll put a big smile on his face and he'll excitedly run off to show everyone his magic.

I thought this is a great romantic seires. Kira and Rei a weird couple yes. Shy and sweet quiet artist girl to Dangerous bad boy that does what he wants. But I loved how the started the first volume. It already showed so things that will come ahead to this couple. Some people look for the art in manga but it wasn't like that for me. I liked the art and this a old manga but has been proveing to this girl that many has loved this series for the beauty of it's story and art. For romance I recommend this book. They already get this couple in some very sweet moments :). I get lost in this series every time I read it. To know more about the series I so recommend buying the fullength series which is 15 books. I love reading them over and over. I hope you find yourself swept away as I was when I read the first book then I couldn't stop reading after that I had to the next one then the next one. I use Officer Buckle and Gloria with kindergartners when I teach my humane education classes. I found it well-written because it was "engaging" for the students, keeping the attention of the children as it moved forward to its happy conclusion. The colorful illustrations throughout the book were great for helping communicate the action. I recommend it for pre-K and K children as a way to enhance their love and appreciation of dogs! I'm substitute teaching and I just read this book to a bunch of first graders. I was cracking up laughing all the way through (the kids were a bit puzzled). Cute book and entertaining for all ages - nevermind the ages 4-8 designation. The illustrations are priceless.

More Officer Buckle and Gloria!

My almost 2-year old son can't get enough of this book. This was also his sister's favorite childhood book (she still loves it, and she's now 11). She began reading it to him a couple of months ago at bedtime, and now he asks for a reading every night, and some mornings too! "More officer buckle and glorwia mease, officer buckle and glorwia mease!"

Safety Tip #1: Prepare for Laughter

Be advised, this book is quite funny. Officer Buckle is a safety instructor, going to schools to give safety lessons. Unfortunately, he doesn't actually keep the kids engaged with his lessons. That is until he gets a partner, Gloria, a police dog. Together, Officer Buckle and Gloria's safety class is a hit at the schools. When Office Buckle thinks that it's Gloria that the kids want to see, he couldn't be more wrong. It's both of them that keep the children entertained and learning. My three kids and I all get a big kick out of this book. The illustrations of Gloria make them all laugh and the moral of the story about the importance of team work comes across in a fun and entertaining way. I wouldn't have minded if Officer Buckle and Gloria came to my school when I was younger.

The princess needs a bit of deportment apparently.

When you decide you need to work on the aristocratic side of a girl, of course you would send her off with a pig keeper and a beast man, wouldn't you?

Because of this, and a bit of a princess triangle, they all end up in a Land of the Giants type scenario, or at least in part.

Here, along with a bit of magic, is a fantasy book where a crow actually comes in useful as a good thing.

All of Alexander's main characters are back in this book (besides Doli I think), and once again Alexander does a wonderful job of portraying the battle of good vs. evil in the fun garb of a fictional adventure. This book highlights self-sacrafice, as Taran has to choose whether or not to help the man competing for the same things that he wants. It also highlights the immorality of selfishness, as Glew is pretty much selfishness incarnate and ends up stuck in a cave with no way to get out, until Taran and co. decide to be merciful to him even though he tried to kill them.

This books is lots of fun, definitely a recommended read, along with the rest of the series.

Overall grade: A-

Great Kid's Book

As a kid I read the Prydain books again and again. I can't resist some Harry Potter comparisons, and since they make a good common point of reference, I'll use the device here. The Prydain books aren't quite as exciting and magical as HP, but they have many of the same coming of age problems expressed through allegory, and frankly I find the characters better developed, more humorous, and more likeable. This is the third in the five book series, and to my mind the weakest but still very, very enjoyable. The protagonist of this book, as of the others is Taran of Caer Dallben, an orphan of unknown parentage and now an Assistant Pig-Keeper. He is being raised by a monastic collection of former war heroes and semi-wizards, and is always insecure about his lineage. In this book he also struggles with the crisis of his best friend, the princess Eilonwy, being forced to leave to learn to be a lady. Other main and recurring characters, save perhaps for the princess, are more or less also neurotic in delightful ways. Alexander avoids formula, even though the plot when described could sound like a million sword and sorcerer books. The depth and likeability of the characters lifts it above most fantasy books, though, especially fantasy books for kids. We grow up with Taran, and the character he develops is character that would almost universally be recognized as admirable. I highly, highly recommend all of them- at least as much as the HP books. Again, I think this may be the weakest one, but it's still terrific.

great, but The book of Three(also by Lloyd Alexander)was better
