Michael D. O'Brien is a masterful storyteller. He has compiled a stunning series, Children of the Last Days, of which Plague Journal is the second. I am now just beyond half way through Eclipse of the Sun, the third. I have two more to go, and by then perhaps he will have written some more. While I'm reviewing his work, I'd like to applaud his latest work : Island of the World. That was a "watershed" book for me.There are not words to convey the power and authority which which he strings words together. It is compelling fiction. Any one choosing to read Michael D. O'Brien's work will be in for a major treat as well as learning experience.

Michael O'Brien has a tendency to overwrite his books (one of his very few flaws as a writer). But in Plague Journal, he reined himself in (or finally got an editor who did) and the result is a book that is no less packed with plot tension, cultural criticism, and character development than his other tomes.

The middle book of a trilogy of books about the Delaney family (starting with Strangers and Sojourners and ending with Eclipse of the Sun), Plague Journal also fits within O'Brien's larger series, which he calls Children of the Last Days. The first of those is the explosive novel Father Elijah.

While Plague Journal is my personal favorite. I recommend reading it after Father Elijah and Strangers and Sojourners, since it needs the other two to provide its context in O'Brien's view of the Last Days.

And O'Brien's view is a bleak one. The government has become the tool of the antichrist, whether it knows it or not, and an honest journalist (even one who doesn't have a living faith in God) can't get an honest shake, but is hunted down.

Swift, sharp, and poigniant, O'Brien provides his readers with everything that Left Behind readers should have gotten but didn't and without all of the silly speculations. This is good literature that shapes the heart and the mind Christianly.

More bang for the buck than "Left Behind"

O'Brien's "Children of the Last Days" series shows what the apocalypse might be like through Catholic eyes. "Plague Journal" shows what an average man would go through when he sees the very land he loves slowly but surely choke off all joy and life in the name of an efficient government. The main character's actions and thoughts make you slow down and wonder what you'd do. Also, not all the characters automatically do the right thing. Each of their actions has a consequence, whether good or bad, and they have to put up with those consequences, which is more realistic. There's no flashy deux ex machina, but God works through the characters in a way that's somehow more majestic than simply suspending laws of nature to make sure the good guy wins. I highly recommend this book no matter what religion you follow. You will laugh, cry, and think.

As I'm sure most reviewers have said, be sure you read Strangers and Sojourners first; PJ is the second in the series. Also, it is good to read Father Elijah too; it occurs about the same time as PJ.

I read PJ in a week. It is one of the most moving books I've read, but I was reluctant to heed its message in the beginning. In this world of half-truths and deceptions where everyone is a partially educated philosopher and politician, PJ really does show the need to not believe everything we heard or read.

Should we be constantly paranoid? Not really. But a healthy skepticism is necessary.

I keep buying extra copies of this book, it's so well-written. I give it to doctors, to friends, to anyone I can to inform them about porphyria. It's easy enough reading without being simplistic, the perfect balance of medical information along with case studies and resource links. I really can't thank Diana enough for supplying the Porphyria community with this text. I wish it was mandatory reading for doctors in every hospital in this country.

Luckily I ran across this very basic easy-to-read medical handbook designed for patients. Not the ordinary scientific approach to a complex subject, but written that any patient can understand the basis of their complex disease. It is a "keeper" and one that I know I will be sharingwith medical students and patients alike.

I was given the term "porphyria" over the phone from the specialist who did not explain anything except told me to get this book and read it cover from cover. When the book arrived I had all kinds of questions which were covered in simple to understand language for the ordinary patient. No mumbo-jumbo of medical terms. When I went back to see the specialists we then were able to dialogue because we both had a basis of information as a background. Since then I have ordered books for co-workers, family members and my pastor so they can understand what I have and understand that it is not a psychological disease.

Simply stated, easy to understand and comprehensive.

This is not a heavy medical text or full of biochemical terms, but written in everyday layman's English, and something a clinician can share with a patient knowing that the book will cover all aspects of the acute hepatic form from description, medical history, drugs, nutrition, to family interpersonal relations to the wonderful case histories of case subjects.

No other porphyria book can be grasped as well as this one.
This book was written by a patient with a publishing house offering the book to the general public as part of the non-profit charitable Porphyria Educational Services, a group that gives
educational support for patients with this disease.

Unsafe Drug lists in this box and all other information found
in the text is regularly updated on a website of the same name,
so your handbook is always up-to-date.

I have freely shared this with my patients which they could read and share with family members. It was most helpful for them as well as saving costly time having to be spent in the clinic.

This book made me feel hopeful regarding christianity again. In a world of hositility and fear the hope of mercy and grace is like drinking a cold glass of water in a desert. I felt I could put into practice the spirit in which the monks live. Well worth the read for a parched soul.

I picked up Radical Hospiality because of a sermon I heard in Boston awhile ago while visiting a friend from college. I did not catch the name of the author, authors as it turns out, but I was sure the minister, a woman, was quoting from a book. When I did a internet search it turned out that the phrase Radical Hospitality is used by religious and social groups from churches to conventions, all around the world. What I amazed by is that so few of the people, like the minister, name where they got their quotes or who they are quoting. This is a very fine book. It borders on brilliant actually and I am not the sort to use such a word casually. Why would anyone not want to give these authors the credit they deserve? The book, Radical Hospitality is challenging in a gentle way. I never once felt like the writers were shoving some agenda down my throat. There is just this level of telling their own experience and stories that any half-brain dead person could tell is from their hearts. Don't get me wrong. It is not a personal experience kind of book and it is not a book for anyone who like fluff instead of substance. But, if you are looking for a book about what has gone wrong in how we relate to one another, this is it. And if you love it too, be sure you tell people who you're quoting!

In Radical Hospitality I found a discussion of Benedictine monasticism and Christian spirituality that surprised me. I'm not exactly sure why but I expected this book to be a practical guide to implementing a monastic rule into one's life filled with specific suggestions and examples cross-indexed to specific rules from within the Benedictine tradition. That is not what this book is.

Instead, it is something much richer and more beautiful. What the book is centers around a discussion of the undergirding and overarching themes and ethos of monastic life and the hospitality that flows from it. Interwoven within these discussions are found wonderful stories that range from the humorous to the poignant taken from the lives of the authors and those they share their lives with. It is from within these elements that the application of these ideas within our lives is discussed in a way in which one ideas flows from and builds on the previous portion of the discussion.

I found my own thinking about how to practice hospitality deeply enriched by this book and I will return to it from time to time to reinforce what I have learned and to reflect on the themes woven throughout the work. I strongly recommend this book to anyone seeking to learn the practice of hospitality from within the practice of monasticism.

"Radical Hospitality" was given to me by a friend who thought very highly of it, and she was right. This is one of those rare books that is really for almost anyone--highly readable, charming and soothing, deep and practical, and full of wisdom and love. It is not particularly theological--it is about lived Christianity. It would be an excellent choice to give as a gift, and it is certainly also a book one would buy for oneself for one's own growth.

As we awaken to the need to live our beliefs about love, to live generously, graciously, welcomingly, we are confronted by our own frightened hesitancy to be present to the needs of others. This book explores how we can reach out while necessarily preserving our own boundaries. "Radical Hospitality" teaches (with wonderful examples) how and why we should become more open and generous, and concludes very credibly that the essence is "listening," perhaps the most basic Benedictine value, used here in the sense of a kind of loving contemplative social presence. Everyone wants and needs to be truly listened to, the authors say, and especially at the times when it can be hardest to want to listen, when the one being listened to is in pain, angry, afraid. To feel heard is to feel real and loved and a little bit healed.

I found "Radical Hospitality" itself to be a beautiful experience of the authors' hospitality toward the reader. Even the design of the book itself is quite inviting.

Understanding the sensitivities surrounding the subject of the book, I realize it may seem rather obtuse to "enjoy" reading it.

However, this book is not just about condolence. Rather, it gives us the realization of the prevalent societal truth. Also, the book is not just a mere reference, but true stories based on authors' own experiences.

Authors sketched the very contours of real life in our society, but it's a finely tuned portrait, with deep perspective and understanding, rather than a mere description.

The book is well written and unapologetic in its frankness.....most readers, whether it'd be a man or a woman, should find some relatedness to this book.

"Six Battles Every Man Must Win" by Bill Perkins is focused on the spiritual battles men must face every day. The six battles listed include:

1. Fight for your identity
2. Fight for personal holiness
3. Fight for your family
4. Fight through pain
5. Fight for your friends
6. Fight for a strong faith

Each of the battles made sense, although I couldn't really relate to the family fight as I'm not married. However I'm sure that many men could relate to it.

I was most impressed with the chapter on fighting through pain. Bill nails the internal struggle that Christian men go through when dealing with pain. Temptation always starts with a baby step, disguised to seem like nothing at all. However it always leads to a slippery slope.

I enjoy Bill's idea of "buddyship" or the need to have male friends. Bill lists a number of reasons why it is important to have male friends, but like the majority of the book, he doesn't give practical advice regarding how to develop relationships. I really would have liked to have seen more practical advice regarding what to do, not just what I should do.

Regardless, this book is a good easy read. I didn't find it life-changing but it was a good review of issues that need to be dealt with as a man. 4 out of 5 stars.

There are hundreds (thousands?) of books now in print which offer information and counsel concerning the sales process. In essence, that process involves cultivation and then solicitation but first an important decision must be made: Whom to cultivate? (In retail sales, obviously, anyone who walks in the door is a prospect.) When conducting workshops for salespersons, I strongly recommend that participants formulate criteria which describe what they consider to be their ideal customer. This profile should direct them to prospects which most closely match up with the criteria. Next I point out that the ideal customers they now have can -- and should -- comprise an extended sales force, serving as referral sources to generate leads. My point is that, except in retail sales, those who sell should select their prospects...not the other war around.

Baker's background is in financial services which presumably require extensive education to understand the specific products and services to be offered prior to the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of prospective buyers of those products and services. The title of his book suggests that understanding motivation (i.e. "hot buttons') is an essential part of the salesperson's preparation and indeed it is. He takes a direct and personal approach to his reader as if he has been retained to provide to the reader a combination of mentoring and coaching services. He carefully organizes his material within 12 chapters, skillfully "Tying It All Together" in the final chapter.

This book be most valuable to those who are new to sales or now considering a career in sales; also to sales managers, especially those who supervise others who are relatively inexperienced. To the former, Baker offers sound basics with a rationale for each; to the latter, Baker offers reminders of basics. (Working as I frequently do with sales managers, I am astonished by the fact that so many of them do not have a sufficient understanding of those basics.) I also recommend this book to another group which Baker may not have had in mind when writing it: Those in executive (non sales) positions who are frequently required to persuade others to support an idea or course of action. By now I am convinced that almost everyone involved in business is constantly selling, themselves if nothing else...and most do it ineffectively. Almost all of the strategies and tactics which Baker recommends can be as beneficial to those not in sales as to those who are.

Individual salespersons as well as organizations need a business plan which is cohesive and comprehensive; also one which prudently allocates resources, especially time and energy, where they will generate the greatest ROI. Given the complexity of the general subject of salesmanship, the art and science of ethical persuasion, it makes sense to consult several different sources (including Baker's book) and then cherry-pick whatever is most appropriate to your own specific circumstances (needs, interests, weaknesses, goals, etc.). Here are some other excellent sources: Dick Canada's The 24 Sales Traps and How to Avoid Them, Linda Richardson's Stop Telling, Start Selling, Paco Underhill's Why We buy, and Gerald Zaltman's How Customers Think.

I am thrilled. This deck is amazing, I feel an instant connection- it's the woodcuts. The effort that went into this just oozes all over the place, truly a labor of love.
Just look at the fool card! I love that it's a girl just happily ambling off the tiled roof of a farmhouse.
I have oodles of decks that I've gathered over the years. This one is my favorite, and I've only had it for about twenty minutes. This deck will be with me wherever I go.

A great deck!

The World Spirit is a truly beautiful deck and one taht gives the clerest readings. Here's Why:

The Art - really stands out from other decks. The block print style makes for beautiful deep black lines and jewel-like colors. The colors are bright and vibrant but without being hard on the eyes. With some bright decks when you lay out more than three cards everything seems to swim and it's hard to make anything out. This deck has a nice balance and I haven't had trouble in this arena.

The Diversity - This is the mother of all diverse decks. Some diverse decks have an African suit and a Japanese suit etc, or feature the occasional ethnic person. Here you have every flavor of person sprinkled evenly throughout the deck. Also, where some decks make the same outline for every person and just use different crayons to color them in this one really this one makes everyone look like members of their race. Also there are a number of cards that feature folks of different races playing, very rare.

The Courts: Courts are Seer, Seeker, Sibyl, Sage, follows the system where the court levels are different ways of experiencing the suit's element. The whole deck is element heavy and will work well for people who relate to the cards in this way. Will be nigh impossible for those who have a wands/air, swords/fire outlook.

Highly recommend

Of course, the choice of a deck is a very personal thing; every Tarot user needs to find a deck that speaks to and pleases or works for them. I cannot resist saying, take a look at this one. The World Spirit deck, and the excellent mini-book (not pamphlet) which comes with it, are extremely well thought-out. This deck is traditional Tarot but very innovative as well, and its innovations are well chosen; I particularly recommend the High Priestess, Magician, and Death cards, and this deck has given me new insight into cards I just never have liked. The deck has both male and female images, feels balanced without insisting on all traditional gender assignments for cards, and without suggesting gender stereotypes which might make one wince. The court cards (Seeker - Seer - Sage - Sybil) are the most useful system I have seen. The cultural references are VERY diverse, yet the deck has remarkable coherency probably due to remarkable research. I love the art; not too pretty, beautiful, with the symbols-rich but uncluttered feel which keeps these cards fresh even after intense study. There is a fair amount of nudity among the images of very diverse ethnic and body types, and if that disturbs or distracts you, this might not be the deck for you. However, this is NOT an erotic deck, or an art deck; if you just want to look at pictures, you are missing something powerful here. This is the deck I recommend to advanced users; beginners; christians; pagans; men and women.

Love, Medicine and Miracles: Lessons Learned about Self-Healing from a Surgeon's Experience with Exceptional Patients
Meditations for Enhancing Your Immune System
After having read Bernie Siegel, I wanted to hear him and I did. I was very pleased with his meditations. But I wanted to explore further.
I found Dr Goodman to be the answer. She is factual and a real person. She describes how she used to teach self-healing to others and then got cancer. She thought this was a joke. From within, she panicked. She then tried her own method and got rid of the cancer, only it returned. In fact, it returned three times. It is only then that she did some deep work to uncover the reasons why this cancer was re-occurring. Doctors told her that if she was not following the normal medical way she would die.
And here came her answer to her quest. She found that she had a core destructive belief that she got as a little child listening to her father's prayer "Thank God I am not a woman"
Thanks to this, she transformed her toxic attitudes to positive ones.

Her book is not only the story of how she was healed of cancer, but also the full detail of a refined method to heal cancer and other diseases. She is fully humane, never condescending or patronizing. She knows because she has gone through the fears, and she came out victorious. With warmth and enthusiasm she goes into full details of her method. You can apply it straight away.

Healing is a decision. It is a choice. If, like me, you are affected with a disease that troubles your life, this warm book is a boon. It does work. I have started to do the deep work of exploration. It is fascinating how the body responds to positive affirmations. This is not a glib answer to patch a plaster on a wooden leg. This work is intense, emotional, sometimes painful. But the hope that blooms in you with results that bud into reality, that is very convincing.
This book is also for people who have a chronic disease and the doctor keeps you "ticking" without much improvement. This book will relieve you.

I can't say enough wonderful things about this book.. It has truely changed my life. Not only is it uplifting and encouraging, it works! I started to notice small changes in little ways and slowly started to really believe. At a time when you feel overwhelmed & scared because of a doctors diagnosis, this book gave me hope, the beginning of all i needed turn it around. I'd recommend it highly.

This book is chock full of meditations for self-healing, no matter what the disease or complaint. The premise of this book is the mind-body connection, that we are ultimately responsible for our own state of health.

Shivani's writing style is easy to read, as if you were chatting comfortably with a good friend. I have tweaked my daily meditation sessions with suggestions found in this book. I wish Amazon sold Shivani Goodman's audio recordings to go along with this book, but this volume is a must-have for those interested in self-healing. You won't be disappointed.
