I had the great fortune to be one of the contributing authors of this award-winning anthology. Never have I been given such an incredible gift. This picture of the journey of women is inspiring, empowering and endearing. I've read it over many times and whether I am reading about "shoulders" that can take it all or the challenge of raising children, I see myself and applaud my growth. A must read for all women, of all ages.

As a contributor to this powerfully written anthology about the lessons learned from living by women of color, I was not only honored to be a part of this work, but humbled by the raw honesty of each story. The healing nature of each story, brings with it a balm for the broken-hearted and wounded spirit, while allowing those of us who have triumphed "through it all" to celebrate together! "Life's Spices" gives women the permission to speak, to no longer live in silence and to embrace a circle of women that allows us to stand strong.

Sometimes you pick-up a book and wonder from the title if there is really anything inside the cover that will interest you. Such was my experience with a book titled "Life's Spices From Seasoned Sistahs: A collection of life stories from mature women of color". The title gave me no insight on why a 61-year-old white man might enjoy reading this anthology of stories from women. What a most pleasant surprise awaited me once I opened it and began pouring over the pages and discovering that people are people regardless of gender or race.

Editor Vicki Ward did an excellent job of pulling diverse people and backgrounds into a mix that makes exploring between the covers a real joy. This book is not just for women of color; it is for all readers. I found inspiration from the life experiences shared in this book and feel that wisdom was gained by my reading it. There are not many books that you can say that about any more.

I fully recommend this book for all readers. It gets the American Authors Association's top book rating of FIVE STARS. It also gets my personal recommendation.

LIFE'S SPICES FROM SEASONED SISTAHS, edited by Vicki Ward, is a wonderful collection of short stories, essays, and poems by mature women of all races. The collection is divided into the following themes: Sistahs' Joys and Struggle with Family, Sistahs' Joys...Life's Pain, Love, Humility, and Other Spices that Flavor Relationships, Mothers Use Love, Forgiveness, Compassion, Wisdom..., Seasonings for Self-Esteem, Sistahs' Survivin' and Working It Out, Death Can Be an Awakening, and The Spirit...Always Present.

Within each theme are related stories of joy, pain, happiness, and sorrow. As each woman puts pen to paper to tell their account, as no one else can, you will find them captivating and filled with wisdom. Each poem is also overflowing with strength and weakness and finally some with acceptance of the hand the authors' have been dealt and the power to forge ahead.

The editor has done an outstanding job selecting the contributors to tell their stories along with providing interesting author biographies and resources for women in all States and some provinces. The writing is exemplary and each narrative is distinct. The tantalizing epigraph and forward provide the how and the why. This collection can serve as an excellent gift for a special woman in your life and once read, can serve as a great conversation piece. We are more alike than we believe but at the same time different in our experiences and responses. Nonetheless, women are the corner stone of the world, as these stories will demonstrate.

Life's Spices From Seasoned Sistahs, is a collection of stories by different women from all walks of life. From African American, to Asian, to Mexican women, all of the sistahs have a story to tell. Each piece is uplifting, wisdom-filled, and presented with just enough seasoning to add to life's gumbo of joys, sorrows, and heartbreaks.

I found this book to be an excellent read. Each woman shared experiences that helped to mold them into strong, proud and wise women. In most cases, the stories were no longer than two are three pages, but each was packed with lessons to aid the reader in this journey we call life.

If you are into nonfiction and enjoy reading how people triumph over life's snares, you'll love Life's Spices From Seasoned Sistahs.

I bought this book a couple of months back and used it extensively in completing a couple of investments. As an investor, I found this book exceptionally useful. Clearly Mr Miller has excellent overall business and transactional understanding, which he has put down as knowledge in an extremely accessible way.

Miller's book is a comprehensive source of excellent advice for founders, technology executives and venture investors. Using a detailed but very readable style, this book brings together the wide range of topics relevant to a tech startup and covers each one thoroughly. Most importantly, it describes the interconnections between those topics that are unique to early stage companies, recommends actions, and provides the logic behind the recommendation. As a former CTO and CEO of venture backed tech startups, I would suggest that every early stage company exec would benefit from having this book as a resource.

Similar to how he does it in his recent book, Mergers and Acquisitions, Edwin L. Miller again displays a powerful ability to present complex information in clear and concise terms. His education and experience are indisputably top-notch, and he further uses this insight to cover numerous stages of a Technology Company in lucid and understandable detail. This is a must-read for anyone interested in starting a technology company, and it pays for itself within the first hour. The book is also comprehensive in that it covers the entire lifecycle of a Technology Company from start-up and formation to placements and acquisition. Easily five stars.

From formation to funding to IPO or sale, Mr. Miller breaks down the issues that you will face in a clear and concise way, providing insight into all sides of an issue. I highly recommend it!

The Modern Middle Ages

This play about the famously disfunctional family of England's Henry II is perhaps the most devestating family drama this side of "Long Day's Journey into Night".

For those who want a real epic, it can - but doesn't have to - be read as a sequel to Jean Anoilh's "Becket". Personally I found that this adds to the tragedy.

It opens during a fictional family Christmas get together that is combined with a historical meeting between Henry and France's young King Phillip. Henry's persistent humiliation of his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, through his string of mistresses has prompted her to hurt him in the only way available to her - by systematically destroying his relationships with their sons. Now Henry - although not old yet - is no longer a young man. The fact that a potentially dangerous Phillip - who has a legitimate axe to grind with Henry - is no longer a child forces them to realize that their familial intrigues have set their boys up for both internal and external disaster upon Henry's death. They make a real effort to save both their shattered marriage and their shattered children, but it may already be too late ...

The main tragedy, of course, is what Henry and Eleanor have done to their children. Richard is admirably brave but has had much of his compassion beaten out of him and replaced with brutality. Geoffrey's great sense of humor has been blasted in the bud, and his fustrated capability of love makes a weapon of an intelligence that would have been an asset to anyone who would have shown him the slightest affection in return (it's worth noting for those who don't know the family's subsequent history that given the condensed time of the play, Geoffrey would presumably have died in a fatal tournament accident soon after the action of the play - making him even more poignant). John, the youngest son of Robin Hood fame, is somewhat mishandled - his failure had much to do with Richard's prior mismanagement and lousy historical timing rather than his own faults, and the ruthless streak that doomed Geoffrey's son Arthur (who isn't in the play) as well as his general competence in many instances (he would later rescue Eleanor from a siege in a manner that would have done Richard proud) doesn't really come across - but in an otherwise excellent play Goldman can be forgiven for bowing to popular opinion in one case.

An accurate depiction of the dynamics of the Plantagenet family, "The Lion in Winter" is also a timeless study of what constitutes a healthy family.

I recently completed a production of this fine play where I played Geoffrey, Duke of Aquataine. I have done a lot of play and this without a doubt is the most well written. Goldman does not waste a single word in the play.

I just bought a new copy of this play and I am so very, very happy that I did. I dashed through it and then reread my favorite parts. I hadn't read it in many years, but my respect has really grown for the playwright's wit and imagination. What an absolutely wonderful play. Of course, I love the film, but it was great fun to see how the play moves rapidly and the dialog is so biting and bitter at times. I agree with all the reviewers. Buy this play because it is a classic play with ripping dialog.

It also helped me understand that I should be enjoying my life each day and schedule time out for me. This is a problem I constantly have trouble with but after reading the book I have started being aware of my decisions and have started enjoying life more for I have taken a lot of my worry and have put my energy in other places. I do highly recommend this book.

This book is a must read for anyone who has been redeployed, downsized or just plain lost their job due to the current economic realities. The author has, in his own words, captured the experiences that anyone who has gone through a layoff will have lived. He has done so in a way that gives you insight into his personal history, love for his father and common phrases that tell the story of his transformation from unemployment to self-actualization.

During the best and worst of times we should take time for self-reflection and make the most out of each and every day. This book reminded me to keep a positive attitude and cherish the things in life that I care about. I have tried a few of the author's approaches. I have made a few lists that I update each day. This book also reminded me that it feels good to help others that are in need, and in turn we help ourselves. I personally went through a layoff and have been ill for over a year. The help of my family, friends, and this book has empowered me to help myself and try to help others.

The Airlife's Airliner series of books cover individual commercial aircraft types in an interesting, in-depth manner.

Each volume of this British series covers a unique commercial aircraft type from its design, production, entry into service, its usage by airlines, and in some cases eventual demise.

Each volume features plenty of color and black and white photographs of the subject aircraft along with a complete construction list (accurate to date of publication for aircraft types still being built).

This volume covers the Lockheed L1011 TriStar widebody airliner ... including all of its variants and provides an interesting look at the genesis of this long-range airliner.

Considered the most advanced jetliner ever produced (even to this day) the Lockheed L1011 is the story of mis-steps ... production snafus and the lack of proper market analysis. Unfortunately hese wonderful and comfortable machines are becoming harder and harder to find as they are replaced with the current generation of airliners ... however, the photos provided in this volume will help one remember a time when the giant tri-jets rules the skies of the world.

Good book on the last, wonderful, Lockheed liner

The L-1011 was the most advanced airliner of its era. Advanced aerodynamics, avionics found on other planes only after 10 years, and a thoroughly designed structure, all these features were peculiar for the TriStar, and are well described in this well researched book. Mr. Birtles write in a fluent but authoritative style, and the book is also filled with many colour photos, albeit some on the grained side. A nice work for all the "TenEleven" fans.

Review Date: 2004-07-08
Of all the airliner types I have ever flown, the L-1011 remains my all time favorite. The Lockheed beauty was the most graceful, yet agile plane I ever flew, and I miss her every time I take to the sky. In this book, Philip Birtles does the L-1011 justice with an in-depth look at the history of the program, operators, technical specifications, a production list, and a concise accident summary.

In general, the "Airliner Color History" series is quite good, but this volume on the L-1011 sets the bar. This is the gold standard of TriStar books. Anyone from an aerospace historian to a pilot, to an L-1011 devotee will love this book. It features very accurate and fairly detailed information (although not to the level of a Pilot Operations Manual, of course), and superb photography, mostly in color.

To me the L-1011 will always be the Queen of the Sky. The TriStar was the best designed, safest, best flying plane ever built, and many of the systems (like the DLC and Autoland) are still unrivalled for technical excellence. Whether you are an old TriStar fan, or you just want to learn about Lockheed's greatest marvel, this is a great addition to your library!

A wonderful book detailing the development and uses of the Lockheed L-1011 Tristar.. Sadly, most Tristars are disapearing from the skies due to their age and fuel consumption. This book explains the history and development of the aircraft very well. It is loaded with pictures of many of the carriers which were fortunate enough to fly this wonderful aircraft. A great book, I really enjoyed it.

Tolya has created a challenging child who just won't listen. Fiesty Lucy bypasses the voices around her until nature causes her to stop and pay attention to its conversations. Neighbors, flowers and bees alike tell Lucy what she's been missing. Intelligent, Lucy learns to be here now. Insight into laryngitis, Lucy's minor medical ailment, provides an added attraction for parents. All my friends love Lucy and have purchased the book for the children in their lives. We can't wait to meet Tolya's next 'Smartie Pants'.

Review Date: 2005-04-22
Almost cinematic in design and construction, truly, "The Magic of M.C. Escher" is a breakthrough book on the works of this artist. Every page is filled with inspiration and surprise. Designed by a gifted art director named Erik The' and produced by Andreas Landshoff, this book flows together to form a loving catalogue of Mr. Escher's visions. It is unlike other books based on Escher which tend to be either tutorial or biographical in nature. Whereas these past books, more or less, deconstruct and analyze his works mainly through words, "The Magic of M.C. Escher" successfully accomplishes this through the images themselves, revelling in their sheer beauty, from his preliminary studies all the way to the finished prints. There are many double foldout pages to better impact Escher's mastery of his craft. Some of the pages are filled, corner to corner, with extremely detailed, magnified sections of specific works that allow the reader to closely experience what it's like to be "nose to nose" with the actual prints.

This book catapults the reader into Escher's world immediately. Before you even open the title page, you discover that the inside of the dust cover reproduces, in full color, of course, "Metamorphosis III" in three horizontal panels each measuring an astounding 39" across. This book brings us along on a visual journey ajoined by Escher's own words, as if he is personally giving us insights on a guided tour of his works. It thoughtfully limits itself to short excerpts from Escher's lectures and letters whose sole purpose is to compliment glorious, detailed photographs of original work. It's filled with Escher's never-before published pencil studies and sketches, extreme closeups of his prints, and detailed photographs of his original carved wood blocks. The pencil studies from his notebooks allow us to follow his thought processes and fully appreciate the endless hours he joyfully and dutifully spent on formulating the precise combination of graphic elements to arrive at his finished images.

The book makes side-by-side visual comparisons of earlier works that inspired Escher to create more self-satisfying images that better convey his "relative division of the plane" and other spacial concepts. Most of its visual content were supplied by two sources: The M.C.Escher Foundation and Michael Sachs, a private collector and print dealer from Connecticut.

Overall, this is book is a stunning, loving homage to this master of printmaking and genius to the graphic arts. Nothing is spared in this book's construction and design. If the adage is true that a picture is worth a thousand words, "The Magic of M.C.Escher" could fill a library.

Given as a gift by a special friend of mine, the book has always adorned the coffee table in the living room as a centerpiece that never fails to attract the attention of both art lovers and art dabblers alike. Perhaps it could be said that my interest in the two seemingly disparate field of mathematics and art motivated that friend of mine to purchase the book, as Escher himself apparently believed and proved that those two seemingly unrelated fields could be beautifully synthesized in a brilliant fusion of creativity. The result is more than convincing.

Escher was a Dutch wanna-be mathematician, who expressed himself through incredibly intricate, creative works of art. This book contains hundreds of his drawing as well as his notebook sketches, which is interesting to look at because you get to see how he developed his drawings. Accompanying most of the pictures in this book are excerpts of letters that he wrote to various people. If you want a book on Escher's work, then this is the one to buy! Fantastic.

Well, the story behind the cover really delivers; truly, this book demonstrates just how L. Frank Baum was mastering his craft at this stage of his life. Sadly, this was the second-to-last book he was to pen before passing away. In "Magic" Baum falls back on a wide and familiar cast of characters including Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, and the Wizard--as well as perennial villain of The Nome King (who, delightfully, just seems impervious to reform). Baum seems to have taken this approach in many of his later books, bringing in as many characters as he could; this approach works with marvelous success. For a kid, it's like getting to go to a birthday party with all of your favorite people; and "Magic" is one heck of a party. In this book, Baum really explores magic and how it is enacted in the Land of Oz; a departure, in a way, because generally the Oz books are about queer creatures and magical objects, and not about the use of magic itself. The parallel adventures of the separate groups of characters in this book help make it one of the most suspenseful in the series and it all ties together quite neatly. John R. Neil's illustrations are wonderful, as is this particular edition of the book. I say "Magic" is a book that all fantasy lovers should read--don't let this tale slip into the oblivion of time. If your children are Harry Potter fans (especially the younger set), then introduce them to the Oz series--and this book in particular.

The Magic of Oz (Books of Wonder) by L. Frank Baum is the next to last book in the oz series written by Baum. This time Ruggedo the ex-nome king once more is stirring up more trouble then ever before and he is assisted by Kiki Aru whom has learned a remarkable magic word. In this story we once more meet our favorite oz charachters like the cowardly lion, dorothy, ozma, and many others. The Magic of Oz is filled with exciting adventures, wonderfull thrills and has grand illustrations that capture the spirit and essence of the magical world of oz. I can not wait to read the last of Baums oz books and then continue with the rest of the oz books written by other authors.

The only thing that I had remembered about reading this book as a child were the magic word "Pyrzqxgl" and the constantly changing flower that the glass cat finds. Happily for me, Baum has filled the book with a sea of these charming little details that are a large part of what still make the Oz novels so wonderful to read for kids and bigger kids.

Magic of Oz focuses on the darker side of Oz. The trouble this time comes from a discontented Munchkin teenager who steals the power of transformation. He is able to brew this trouble because of the alienated beasts in the Forest of Gugu. Fortunately, the wicked plans are foiled by the Wizard and Dorothy in time for everyone to celebrate the birthday of Ozma. Additionally, the Nome King loose end is finally tied up for good.

Magic of Oz is the thirteenth and pentultimate book in the series. As in Glinda of Oz, the book suffers from some recycling of older themes and evident author fatigue. Still, definitely worth the time for fans of Oz. Particular points for the Neill illustrations of the Li-Mon-Eags-- creepy!

I first heard this story 53 years ago in second grade. Our teacher read a portion each day. It was truly a magical time for me. I was transformed and delighted by the glass cat, the idea of miniature monkeys jumping out of Ozma's birthday cake and most of all the amazing flower that bloomed over and over again. Years later I read it again sure that the bloom would have come off the rose (figuratively speaking) and found I was enchanted again. Then I had the chance to read it to second graders of a new generation - one filled with Yu-gi-oh and Sponge Bob and I was pleasantly surprised to find them listening to the old-fashioned story told with antiquated vocabulary with the same enthusiasm I did. Most of my students had never even heard the original Wizard of Oz story or had even seen the movie!! I have since purchased other titles in this series to give to my students so that each will have one as part of their upbringing but this still remains to be my favorite Oz book.

I recommend this book. If you are involved in Pulmonary Function Testing you are probably already aware of Mr. Ruppel's textbook. I often see it in the hands of Respiratory Therapy students who come to my lab for clinical experience. (They should NOT sell it back to the college bookstore!) I personally bought this copy to have on our reference shelf in the lab. It is very well put together, well written and covers nearly all aspects of Pulmonary Function Testing from lab organization and quality control to lung diagnostic techniques and their clinical significance. My edition did not have any discussion on Impulse Oscillometry but hope this rising technology will be included soon.

Buy it, read it and then use your knowledge to help "raise the bar" for our profession!

A Must Have!!!!

This book will serve as an excellent reference for anyone interested in knowing the rationale and procedures of pulmonary function testing. Nice sections on cardiopulmonary exercise testing as well. The latest edition features refined text and graphics and is really a nice read. We use it for our Pulmonary Fellowship at Georgetown University Hospital.

I teach Respiratory Therapy, and specifically Pulmonary Functions. I have found Ruppel's text to be very comprehensive and easy for students to read. He has written a book for the technologist, not the physician. The informations is well researched and correct according to the established standards set up by the American Thoracic Society and the American College of Chest Physicians. I have read other popular Respiratory Therapy Text that have apparently never heard of these standards. I am in anticipation of the release of his 8th edition.

Grace Hill at her BEST!

I have read too many Grace Hill books to let one her best books get a one star (yes, I know some books are painful because they hit too close to home but that doesn't make them bad books!!!). I so wish she would have left half of her books unwritten, some are quite tedious but this is one of my favorites and I think one of her best. Marcia's sister jilts her "beloved" on their wedding day and she offers to take her place as bride(because she has truly come to care for David). He sees her only as his love's little sister but is so devastated by her betrayal and maybe a little hurt in his pride that he agrees. She is young and innocent and true, unlike her sister and eventually her husband comes to see God's providence in Marcia as his wife and his responsibilty to her. If you like Ms Hill don't miss this book.

I have read many of Grace Livingston Hill's books, and I think this is my favorite. It is a story of a wife's deepening and maturing love, and a husband discovering his love for the woman he married. I especially enjoyed her description of David as he finally realizes how much he does love his wife. Holds up a high ideal of marriage.

I'm 18 years old and I never read romance novels until I found some Grace Livingston Hill books that my mom bought. Marcia Schuyler was the first I read... I guess the picture caught my eye. I started reading it, and I could NOT put it down!!! I was laughing about it with my brother, telling him, "I'm actually gonna go read a romance novel now. I'll let you know how it is!" but I LOVED it!! The story was so captivating! I read the whole book, all 300 and some pages worth, in one night!!! *laughs* Since then, I have gotten alot of the other books and have really enjoyed my time reading them. Still, "Marcia Schuyler" is my FAVORITE!! I've read it 2 times, and it's also my mom's favorite. Grace Livingston Hill really captured a unique story with this one, a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat, waiting to find out what happens next. I think it is so sweet how the two main characters finally realize how much they love each other in the end.
If you want a sweet, clean, wholesome novel, I highly suggest reading this one!! I've even given it as gifts to my friends. :)

Grace Livingston Hill: Pioneer of Christian Fiction

Grace Livingston Hill was my idol. I had been reading lurid, sexy books and then, I became a Christian. Then I realized these were not the healthiest books to read for
a young Christian trying to grow in Christ. I, then, read 89 of Grace's books. I scoured the stores for more until there were no more to be had. That's when I decided wholesome romance books were in demand but in short supply. Grace's books were my greatest inspiration and what encouraged me to write Christian Romance myself.
Still, many years later, I'm still (sign) hoping to come across a title of hers I may have missed.
