As a new small business owner, I was given this book by a friend who told me that there were valuable lessons inside that might help develop my own firm. I thanked them and put the book aside, intending to read it at a later date when the hectic days of building my business were passed. One late night, after another long day I collapsed into bed and having this on my bedside table, thought I would pick it up and read a chapter to get a feel for it.

That night I stayed up until 4 am reading, and completed the book later the next day. I realized immediately that the lessons in this book were immensely valuable to me as my start-up business grew and how fortunate I was to read the practical lessons the book offers while I was still in a position to develop the culture and methodology of my firm. Ultimately, I was able to save countless hours of wasted effort and incorporate future business planning via the lessons learned in this book.

The authors use a combination of practical knowledge and experience to bring the running of your business to the forefront of the discussion. Mr Wilk and Dr McGuire present short chapters in which advice about such basic elements as accounting, customer service, dealing with employees and keeping them happy are uniquely addressed. The result is an incredibly easy and enjoyable read. Forget the long business case studies from Harvard, what a new business owner needs is practical advice delivered in an easy-to-understand format. In this regard, the authors have excelled and the result is a book that may be read cover-to-cover or just picked up and perused.

The authors hail from Maine, where folks are known for getting to the point and not using ten works when two will suffice. Perhaps this is one the most unique and enjoyable aspects of this book is that it is devoid of pretentiousness without being overtly "folksy." The bottom line is the authors are two people like most business owners: they have begun start-ups in small town America with their own collateral, hard-work and commitment as the backbone of their ventures. If you are a small business owner like me, ask yourself this: "who is more likely to understand the lessons you must go through to turn your dream into a successful business? A Harvard Business School Student writing a book for his thesis, or a lawyer and a doctor from a regular American town who have started their own businesses, learned the lessons the hard way, and are there to share their experiences in a practical and humorous way?"

I'm not sure this book could have been written by anyone outside of Maine. Probably nowhere else in the United States will you find people who combine such a strong, practical, work ethic with such a dry sense of humor. This book was never boring, always funny, relevant and interspersed with practical examples.

This year our business will approach billings of $750,000. This is rapid growth for a firm under six months old. Along the way we have had to sort our accountancy issues, hire employees, allocate resources and develop and then re-define our business plan. I estimate that the time, lessons, and examples found within this book have contributed to a savings of over $65,000. It's little wonder that I've bought copies of this superb work and given it to friend and associates who own their own businesses.

This could be the best investment you ever make in your growing business...

As a teacher and non-profit manager, I found "It's Your Business" to be a useful resource in my work. The book reinforced the notion that attending to the needs of my "internal customers" - my students and employees - is as critical to the success of my classroom and business as attending to the needs of my "external customers" - parents, school administrators, and the recipients of my non-profit organization's services. At the core of Marty Wilk's and Peter McGuire's practical and accessible volume is genuine respect for business enterprise and heartfelt optimism about what can be achieved for the good of the business, employee, community, and environment when their common sense recommendations are applied. Readers need not hold an MBA to understand and benefit from "It's Your Business"; rather, they need only the willingness to examine their own business (or teaching) practices through the customer-service focused lens of these knowledgable authors who constructively point the way to a business's deep and lasting success.

This book is among the "Best of Breed" business books I've encountered, and I've studied many business books. As a CPA and business owner, I found the advice practical, actionable and you don't need a Harvard MBA to understand and act on it. The authors bring real life relevant business experience in a format that is easily understandable and is immediately applicable. The book can be read cover to cover, but its handbook format allows the reader to pick a topic that is of immediate interest, dive in, learn or reinforce best practices and move on.

Three young kids--Julian, his little brother Huey, and best friend Gloria, look through the Most-Wanted posters at the post office. They decide they'd like to investigate crimes and criminals. Later, in a parking lot, they see a dog locked in a hot car. A passerby says, "That's a crime!" and they know their calling has begun. Afterwards, they rescue a lost toddler from playing too near a water fountain. This story is too funny because the kids are so innocent: they go to a bar to look for crime, and are spotted by someone who knows their dad. Oh, boy, are they in trouble now! Next, a young man working in a fast food shop matches the description on a Most Wanted poster. They go to the police chief, who in turn, asks them for help in identifying this possible criminal, who turns out to be the chief's son! This delightful story is well-written, realistic and interesting, and depicts characters still in the wonderful freshness of youth. A beginning chapter book for hungry early readers, Diane Allison's illustrations help depict the African-American neighborhood, such as a scene in the park under the MLK statue.

Fasinating Sci-fi romance

Sara was annoyed to be ordered to wear a dress to meet the arrogant alien Supreme Leader, so when he asked "Why would any woman choose to be a soldier?" her reply was "I joined to travel, meet new people... and kill them". So if you like your heroine to be the kind that kick butt, you'll like this book.

Another thing I really loved about this book, besides the cool sci-fi stuff, was that the United States military were the good guys.

The only thing I did not like about the book was that everyone in this far far away galaxy spoke English. Weird.

This writer has captured the excitement, danger, and suspense when people from earth exploring more than one galaxy meet a dangerous force that wants to overcome all other peoples. Her heroine is strong, principled, and beautiful. Quite a combination. I read the first two pages after receiving the book and was unable to quit reading from then on. The writer has good command of her craft and doesnt' disappoint.

I was addicted to these books when I was younger and it wasn't until I was majoring in education in college that I figured out why. They were interesting with bizarre plot twists that most 9-12 year olds don't think about and they were short (this one is 124 pages). I could read the whole thing in a day.

My parents also didn't have a lot of heartache with buying me a new book because these are relatively inexpensive (in the neighborhood of 3-5 bucks each).

R.L. Stine's "Goosebumps" books aren't scary, just kind of creepy. There aren't graphic descriptions of murder and mayhem. Just some ghosts, werewolves, or potions. The main character is alive in the end, and the final chapter resolves everything.

**Keep in mind, R.L. Stine has other books that aren't in the "Goosebumps" series that tend to be a little harsher when it comes to hauntings and plot. They are written more for the 12-14 age group and are longer (around 150-200 pages).

My husband and I also lost a son - 13 months ago. I have read dozens of books on grief over the last year. Dennis Apple's book is possibly the best one I've read. It is uncanny how closely his feelings mirror mine and my husband's. While nothing takes away the pain of losing a beloved child, there is something comforting in knowing you aren't the only one to have ever hurt this badly or had these feelings. Mr. Apple offers a Christian perspective and one of hope & redemption but not in a "God is so good and praise him regardless" kind of way. He acknowledges his anger and disappointment toward God which makes him more credible in my eyes. This is an excellent book for grieving parents or those who are trying to help them.

Our son just recently passed away (jeremyearnshaw.com) and I have tried to find a book to help. This book my son's fiancee picked up by accident at the Christian book store. Once you start reading the book you can't put it down. When tragedy happens you look for something or someone to relate to...certainly there must be someone out there. This book for us on the tragic loss of our tender hearted son at 23 has been a great help. Our son like his was so loving and kind and wouldn't think twice about walking with his arm over his parents shoulders in a mall. Anyway, a great help and encouragement through the grieving process. Highly recommended.

This book is of the charts when it comes to honestly documenting the effects of grief on a parent who had lost a child. After we lost a son and grandson I searched for several years for someone who could relate to my feelings, emotions and reactions to what I was going through. The fact that Dennis was open, honest and forthcoming about all of his thoughts and feelings made my journey so much easier. Like Dennis, I was also a pastor when my son died. I only wish I could have met Dennis and talked with him several years ago. I have searched and researched for almost ten years and you will not find a better resource for helping you cope with grief. If anyone reading this has lost a loved one, especially a child, you need to get this book.

Review Date: 2008-06-06
As a mom who has buried two children, a stillborn daughter and a 16 year old son, and having a ministry with bereaved mothers, I have read many books on grief and the loss of a child. Yet, I've never read a book that hit the raw emotions and the grief journey I have walked with such open honesty, as this book. Though I read this book in 24 hours, it could not be read in one sitting, as my tear blurred eyes had to recover from the emotions and pains I similarily went through (and still am).

Dennis Apple, the author, and also a pastor, shares with little hesitation, his journey of grief, questioning God, loneliness and despair as he tried to find normalcy. He shares not only his pain but not understanding his wife's depression and his searchings to console her. Sharing excerpts from his journal, Mr. Apple writes of the roller coaster of grief, the unexpected attacks of grief, even many years later. Even with his wonderings at times where God was, he shares how he can see God never left him, and gives hope and understanding to those walking this road now.

This book is not just for bereaved parents, but should be read by pastors, grief counselors, extended family of the bereaved or anyone who wants or should understand the pain after the loss of a child. I invite you to read this book to understand and care for others. Though you will most likely have a tear streaked book when you are finished, it will give you hope and understanding.

This is a treasure of a book and is very sacred in nature. There are two editions of this book, the first in 1977. The introduction reveals the history of the text and its translations, and the fascinating history that surrounds the text. See "The Life of Marpa the Translator: Seeing Accomplishes All", by Chogyam Trungpa, for further information regarding its history (both texts were written by the same man). Anyway, the first English translation became available early in the 20th century by W. Y. Evans-Wentz.

I am recalling most of this from memory, so my apologies go out to those who find my data incorrect. I highly recommend the new english translation of "The Life of Milarepa" for anyone seeking the life of saints.

He is one of the recent enlighten masters, and all this happened a few hundred years ago. He has received little Attention compared to Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed and Khrishna. There is defenately a lot to learn from this book, and what he did is worth reading about.

As Milarepa tells his story, one of his disciples interrupts him and says that compared to Milarepa's effort, all of our spiritual practice and effort seems like a banal pretension.

I tend to agree. The story will rekindle your dedication. A great book to get if you are feeling down or if it seems like your spiritual quest is too hard or going nowhere.

It will rekindle your Inner Fire if you give it a chance.

Miller's book is a comprehensive source of excellent advice for founders, technology executives and venture investors. Using a detailed but very readable style, this book brings together the wide range of topics relevant to a tech startup and covers each one thoroughly. Most importantly, it describes the interconnections between those topics that are unique to early stage companies, recommends actions, and provides the logic behind the recommendation. As a former CTO and CEO of venture backed tech startups, I would suggest that every early stage company exec would benefit from having this book as a resource.

As an attorney who has worked with start-ups I found this book to be an incredibly valuable resource and suggest that anyone looking to start a technology company read it because it provides a roadmap to all of the business and legal issues that you will face when launching your technology company. From formation to funding to IPO or sale, Mr. Miller breaks down the issues that you will face in a clear and concise way, providing insight into all sides of an issue. I highly recommend it!

This play about the famously disfunctional family of England's Henry II is perhaps the most devestating family drama this side of "Long Day's Journey into Night".

For those who want a real epic, it can - but doesn't have to - be read as a sequel to Jean Anoilh's "Becket". Personally I found that this adds to the tragedy.

It opens during a fictional family Christmas get together that is combined with a historical meeting between Henry and France's young King Phillip. Henry's persistent humiliation of his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, through his string of mistresses has prompted her to hurt him in the only way available to her - by systematically destroying his relationships with their sons. Now Henry - although not old yet - is no longer a young man. The fact that a potentially dangerous Phillip - who has a legitimate axe to grind with Henry - is no longer a child forces them to realize that their familial intrigues have set their boys up for both internal and external disaster upon Henry's death. They make a real effort to save both their shattered marriage and their shattered children, but it may already be too late ...

The main tragedy, of course, is what Henry and Eleanor have done to their children. Richard is admirably brave but has had much of his compassion beaten out of him and replaced with brutality. Geoffrey's great sense of humor has been blasted in the bud, and his fustrated capability of love makes a weapon of an intelligence that would have been an asset to anyone who would have shown him the slightest affection in return (it's worth noting for those who don't know the family's subsequent history that given the condensed time of the play, Geoffrey would presumably have died in a fatal tournament accident soon after the action of the play - making him even more poignant). John, the youngest son of Robin Hood fame, is somewhat mishandled - his failure had much to do with Richard's prior mismanagement and lousy historical timing rather than his own faults, and the ruthless streak that doomed Geoffrey's son Arthur (who isn't in the play) as well as his general competence in many instances (he would later rescue Eleanor from a siege in a manner that would have done Richard proud) doesn't really come across - but in an otherwise excellent play Goldman can be forgiven for bowing to popular opinion in one case.

An accurate depiction of the dynamics of the Plantagenet family, "The Lion in Winter" is also a timeless study of what constitutes a healthy family.

I recently completed a production of this fine play where I played Geoffrey, Duke of Aquataine. I have done a lot of play and this without a doubt is the most well written. Goldman does not waste a single word in the play.

What an absolute JOY to read such biting dialog.

I just bought a new copy of this play and I am so very, very happy that I did. I dashed through it and then reread my favorite parts. I hadn't read it in many years, but my respect has really grown for the playwright's wit and imagination. What an absolutely wonderful play. Of course, I love the film, but it was great fun to see how the play moves rapidly and the dialog is so biting and bitter at times. I agree with all the reviewers. Buy this play because it is a classic play with ripping dialog.
