The third book in the series and you know exactly what to expect. Yes, folks, it is every bit as entertaining as the first two, and that's probably all you need to know. But I'll go ahead and mention that he spends some time in the RAF during World War II, which we knew he would as the second book ended. I'll also mention that he and Helen have a baby, which you probably expected. One of the great joys of his writing is discovery, so I'd hate to screw that up with a spoiler, but these two tidbits are on the back cover anyway. Oh, and halfway through it, I predicted an ending in advance, and I only had to read 1000 pages by this guy before that happened. It's still great, great stuff, and you know you'll love it.

He was a fantastic writer and having been born and raised on a farm I can appreciate a lot of what he talks about. I also have his cat and dog stories books and loved them just as much.

What a fantastic read!! In Ariel's Journey, the young girls embark on a journey forcing them to realize that what was once considered a problem before their journey began (a typical conflict among tween friends) really wasn't such a big issue in comparison with they were chosen to accomplish. These once naïve girls, turn into brave and majestic warriors as they fulfill their mission for peace and goodness. They become strong and focused as they bond with one another and their Icelandic horses in order to bring peace to Iceland. There is also very knowledgeable information on the Icelandic breed of horses as well. I look forward to reading each book in this series!

Humorous, educational, and very entertaining!

At first I was a little skeptical of the plot in Ariel's Journey... I mean, teenage girls traveling back in time to Iceland with magical horses? However, after finishing the book, I'm a BELIEVER! The story moves along at a nice pace and the characters are very well-developed. Kane and Wood give special attention to the little details that make each character endearing, such as Andrea's wild "morning hair" and the unrestrained enthusiasm that twelve-year-olds Kim and Darcy share for pretty much anything that comes their way. This story not only encourages "girl power" and teaches young women that they DO have the inner strength to accomplish great things, it is also rather gritty and realistic in surprising ways. The girls actually charge into battle wielding swords and there is some blood and gore! Ariel's Journey achieves a perfect balance of adventure, dialogue, romance, and female bonding. I have to admit that I became very attached to the characters and was sad when they arrived home, ready to resume their normal lives in modern society. Luckily I can take comfort in the fact that book #2 is coming out soon. I can't wait to see what happens next with Princessa, Skessa, Ariel, Hela, and Kedja and their brave young riders!

Cute book about kids going back in time and visiting Iceland 800 years ago. Two things I liked a lot about it. It depicted Icelandic horses as being very wise and having magical powers. If you know any Icelandic horses, you'll know how they really seem to have those qualities. I liked that the teenage girls in the story developed into skilled warriors who rescue others instead of being rescued. Girls need to read more books like this. I hope these authors continue writing. People who like this book will enjoy an older book called "Cloud Horse" by Miriam Pinkwater. Annie

Ariel's Journey is an excellent book for teens and adults. It is a story that shows the true relationship a rider can have with their horse. Horses (especially the Icelandic breed) like humans have their own unique traits and personalities. This story describes the ability of horses to bond with their riders in a mystical way. It is a great adventure story filled with twists and surprises to keep you on the edge of your seat. It also teaches you a great deal about the Icelandic horse breed and their homeland.
I enjoyed the story from beginning to end. Each chapter leaves you wanting more, therefore, making it hard to put the book down. I am anxiously awaiting the release of the next story.

I enjoyed Ariel's journey! was an easy read, very interesting and informative. I especialy enjoyed the unexpected twist in the story. I also felt it was a real life relationship learning tool for tweens that will read the book. Its a tough time for girls in this real part of their lives and this book tells what can happen when you can put those things aside. The authors did a particularly great job in character descriptions of both the girls on the journey and the horses that were their friends.

I am using this as part of my research to aid me with the series of paintings I am doing of North American Indians from the period 1850 through 1910. I found it interesting that of the paintings I have completed thus far, I often get asked by Native Americans if I have yet done any paintings of members of their tribes. This book helps with the geographical aspects of where my subjects may have been located at the time they lived.

A good resource for any student entering the field of North American Indian studies, this book is carefully organised and rendered. Waldman traces the many facets that have been used to explain who the North American Indians were, how they lived and where. The text is clear and direct, well-suited to the novice in this area of study. The wealth of maps and other illustrative material well supports the narrative, although space restrictions force a certain level of clutter at times.

Waldman opens the book with a description of how humans arrived in the Western Hemisphere. The "Ancient Civilizations" of Mesoamerica, such as the Olmec and Maya are well summarised, before the author turns to the Southwest peoples - the Anasazi, Hohokan and Salado communities. He explains the often overlooked or poorly considered Moundbuilders of the Lower Midwest. The section on "Indian Lifeways" turns to areas like California, the Pacific Coast, and Subarcic regions. While these peoples didn't achieve the strongly hierarchical civilisations of Mesoamerica, their various social structures were complex and dynamic. Their economic systems allowed them to endure and they adapted well to change, something too often lacking in Mesoamerica. To a limited extent, the geography and environment hosting these people granted them the flexibility to maintain a dynamic society, even in precarious conditions.

One aspect of life they were poorly prepared for was the European intrusion. Waldman sets aside a section to introduce the problems introduced by European colonisation. The litany of wars and rebellions take up a hundred pages of the text. The accompanying maps showing battle sites sparkle with stars indicating clash sites. Some of these wars have almost disappeared from historical accounts of North American settlement. It's a good reminder of how the whites took over the hemisphere and what cost that hegemony extracted from the native population.

In time, war was replaced by "Land Cessions" and resettlement. The reservation system, never a fixed idea, is carefully explained by Waldman. The modern result of reservation communities and the ambivalent policies surrounding both the settlements and their populations gave rise to a new awareness among Indian people. The poor acknowledgement of Indian contributions in two world wars was but one of many irritants leading to "uprisings" at Wounded Knee and elsewhere. The author goes on to list major Indian government agencies and Indian organisations and facilities. Indian place names, often overlooked, are listed, with the modern "nation" structures for the US and Canada provided. In all, this book will be a firm base from which to expand a study of Indian circumstances for the future. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

I was in for a surprise when I was a little bit into the book and realized this was another take on Beauty and the Beast. Slow, I know. I love the story of Beauty and the Beast in all its forms, but this has to be my favorite. Alex Flinn has put the Beast in high school, made him a snotty prom king and cursed him by the hand of a goth-girl witch. And once the enchantment begins, this book moves from the realm of retelling into something truly powerful, fresh and new. The love story is real and believable and Flinn's considerable descriptive powers put movie scenes in your head you'll want to replay over and over. This one is bound to become a classic.

Great character transformation, not the greatest love story

Kyle Kingsbury is rich, good-looking, has a celebrity father, and is elected the prince of popularity at school. Influenced by his neglecting father, who teaches him that the only person who will ever love him is himself, he lives his life in an arrogant, cruel manner, getting thrills out of hurting others. When he deceives a girl at school with the sole purpose of humiliating her, and the girl (who happens to be a witch) retaliates, he finds himself under a beastly curse until he can learn to love and is loved in return.

The most interesting part of the story is the great transformation of Kyle. In the beginning he is truly selfish and vile and undergoes a substantial physical change which leads to a deeper, inward change that is believable. Lindy is not as compelling a character as I would have enjoyed. She needs more wit or cleverness to make her truly something unique. He seems to fall in lust with her more than love (thinking of running his hands over her thin dress, etc).

Warning for YA readers: There are references to sex with girlfriend at the beginning of book, alcohol use, mildly offensive language, and general sensuality.

This was a very modern retelling of Beauty and the Beast. At first, I was having a hard time figuring that out, but as the book went on the similarities became more apparent.

In the beginning, Kyle is a typical stuck-up high school jock, except multiplied by a million. His attitude was so bad, I finally realized why some people can't stand to read a book because of the main character. Kyle was beyond rude; he made me thankful that my high school isn't filled with kids like him. Believe me, he was bad.

After he does something truly horrible to some "loser" at school, the "loser" turns out to be a witch, who turns him into a beast. But he gives him a chance to fix it. If Kyle could find a girl to love, who could love him, and have her kiss him as a beast, then he would be back to how he was. But, if that didn't happen after two years, then he would stay like that forever.

The story is very fast-paced, and filled with likeable characters who help Kyle on his journey to becoming better. This was a true fairy tale, in that it has a happy ending, but the book was done pretty well to keep the reader interested. I'll admit, it was a tad predictable, but not so bad that it took away from the quality of the book. Overall, I'd say Alex Flinn did a great job with making this retelling modern and fun.

Ben's In Love is one of my favorites in the Making Out books that I have read so far. It has a lot of emotions in it, with Nina coming out of her protected shell of emotions, Claire finally deciding what she wants to do with the "situation" with Josh, Lucas being homecoming king, and Chris getting hurt, and with that, Aisha discovering her true feelings about Chris. Also Ben and Nina's relationship starts blooming. It's definentaly one that you wouldn't want to skip. This is why I gave Ben's In Love 5 stars.

I liked this book. It is one of the better books in the series. I like Killian, he is a great character as is Ciaran who has alot of class. I liked the way Bree and Robbie's relationship is growing as is Morgan and Hunter's. I didn't like the way Morgan reacted to finding out Ciaran was her father - "omg I'm the heir to the darkness! I'm somehow evil just because my Dad is!" and then she goes and breaks up with Hunter completely unnecessarily, destroying a wonderful relationship just because she finds out she's related to a murderer. However, apart from the unfortunate ending, I thought that this was a very good book and I'd still give it 4 out of 5.

Like the rest of the books in this series, "The Calling" was very compelling. If you know the series well enough, it's kind of predictable, but that doesn't make it any less suspenseful. The ending is REALLY sad and shocking. I liked the fact that "The Calling" took place in New York City, as opposed to Widow's Vale - it made for a nice change of scenery and a good atmosphere to introduce new characters.

Morgan has overcome Cal and his mother. They are no longer a threat. But Cal's mother was part of an evil coven and they know Morgan is around.

A dream/nightmare has Morgan, Hunter (the seeker) and some of the rest of the coven heading for New York City. The International Council of Witches believes that an evil witch is going to sacrifice his son to increase his powers. This allows Morgan and Hunter to go (along with his sister Sky and her girlfriend Raven). Bree and Robbie also go as Bree's father has a place they can stay in the city.

Morgan also tries to use the time to learn more about her mother (she had lived in New York City for a couple of years).

But everything changes when the evil witch rears his head and tires to kill Morgan and not his son Killian.

Well, there are plenty more books in the series so you probably know that Morgan survives but you will have to read it to find out about the others. There are personal and relationship developments aplenty and some plot twists and revelations that help set up the next few books.

A pretty good addition to the series.

This is a real good bible with a translation you could use to "quote". I liked the pages and inserts with explainations. You could sit down and just read facts and info on many subjects in the bible. I wish the pages were a little thicker so you could write or highlight on them. I suppose it would make this book thicker and heavier. It would make a great study bible for youth or any age. I, definately, would recommend this bible to anyone.

A wonderful book. I loved it as a child, and going back to read it as an adult I realize that there are a lot of things that I missed. I remember my teacher reading it aloud in class--wonderful!

The movie, although very nice, has only a superficial resemblance to the book. For one thing, it moves the time a generation or so back. For another, in the book both parents are alive, rather than Caracticus Pott's being a widower; consequently, there is no romance.

I could very well wish that a new movie be made, NOT a musical and following the original plot.

I remember the 1968 movie based on this novel fondly, but had never picked up the novel itself until just the other day. I was surprised at how different the book is. Although Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang herself is very similar in both, the plot of the story is much different. I enjoyed this simple little story, with Fleming's humorous asides, very much. Those asides reminded me of the "Series of Unfortunate Events" books I have read and I would be interested in learning if Lemony Snicket drew from Fleming's story style for his own series. This is a fun, quick story that most kids will enjoy. I do, however, fear that the admittedly crude illustrations in my original edition would not be as popular with modern children.

A Delightful Ride!

The story of Caractacus Pott, his family, and that wonderful magical car is one of the best children's stories you will ever read. Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, tells a fantastic story about Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the magical flying car that can even turn into a boat! It's a delightful story, filled with crooks and gangsters, and you won't be sorry you bought this fantastic little book. Should be added to every child's bookshelf. Just delightful! The book is so much better than the movie, eliminating that silly Vulgaria story. If you want to read the story Ian Fleming intended, you'll have to buy the book. You won't be sorry.

She then had a dream of where she thought Nancy's body would be found. She reported this to the police and they did not believe her. There wre many more killings after that. Soon this killer earned the name the Chritmas Killer. He left many clues. When Rose went to get help from Miss Mackey, she blanked out. They almost lost her. When Rose found out that she got a solo in the dance recital she was very excited. She went to her dance class she saw that Mureal was on the phon with her back turned Rose went ahead and got dressed. She thought Mureal was playing jokes on her and she was like thats not funny. She gets scared after seeing that it was not MUreals shadow. So, she runs in the stall where she finds Mureal with her throat cut from ear to ear.She runs out and sees a man. He then talks about how good blood is. Then he bruses her up and then Wallace Romala comes in and saves her. She finds out that it was Mureal's twin brother.

After Nancy was kidnapped, Rose had a dream. In this dream Nancy was leading Rose to her burial site. A few days later they find her body in a similar surrounding to what Rose had envisioned. At first Rose was unsure if it was a coincidence, or if it had any real meaning. Throughout the story there are several girls kidapped and many suspects. One of those suspects is jerome, Rose's twin brother. One night she sees jerome outside her den window and then she begins to wonder. Wallace Romano was the first one everybody suspected to be the Christmas Killer, because he chose to be homeless over living in a mansion with his family, also because he is different than most people expect. While all of this is going on, Nancy still appears in Rose's dreams, giving her clues to the crime scenes and the murderer. Rose takes dance lessons from a woman named Muriel. Muriel is a nice, younger woman who has known Rose since she was ten years old. As you read this book you will find twists and turns that will eventually point out the killer to you.

This was an absolutely fabulous book. I read it when I was twelve and still remember its bone chilling effect in my twenty's. I highly recommend this to anyone who has an interest in ghosts or murder mysteries. The characters are well developed and you won't want to put this page turner down.

My daughter, age 10, said this was her favorite book she's read!!! That's saying a lot, she's a big reader.

I'd have to give it 10 stars out of five ....then go start it myself!

Friends in an Unusual Town

The residents of Collinsfort Village find nothing unusual in a bear driving a Ford, or a 20-foot tall griffin shopping for groceries for a gourmet meal.

Bear and Griff are the main characters in this charming tale. Bear, whose famous cousin works for the Forest Service, is employed at installing and repairing cable, while Griff is a novelist who writes under a pen-name. Both are well-liked by their town neighbors and spend time playing with or reading to the children in the community.

Dorian, a friend of Griff's, is a dragon twice Griff's size, who resides in California and paints fabulous murals for a living. He is contracted to paint a mural in Collinsfort Village and when he arrives walking instead of flying, Griff begins to suspect that all is not well in Dorian's world.

"Collinsfort Village" is a story of friendship and tolerance suited to everyone, be they two or a hundred and two. If your children are not yet old enough to read, read it to them. If you have no children to read to, then read it for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

...is just one of the delightful, memorable lines in Joe Ekaitis's "Collinsfort Village."The characters are even better than the other reviews here say in this charming first novel for all ages.Griff, the storytelling griffin, Bear, the Suburban driving bear, Dorian, the mural painting dragon, and Dennis, the young fellow who asks the questions. They are the leading characters, but there isn't a pointless character on any page."Collinsfort Village" could be considered a retelling and update of the classic "The Wind in The Willows."Joe Ekaitis's message about being true to oneself is clearly presented, but not in an obnoxious, heavyhanded manner.I read this delightful book in a little less than two hours, but tried, tried, and tried to slow down and make it last. The cover and internal illustrations by Nick Greenwood add extra delight and narrative punch.I want a sequel!

I absolutely loved Collinsfort Village! I would recommend this book to anyone. The way that Joe Ekaitis wrote it made me believe that it was true!

This book is great for kids, ages 8-14, and maybe even older. Anyone younger than eight may want to wait to read it so that they will understand it better.

If this book was rated on a scale of one to ten, I would give it a 20; that's how good it is!

After reading it, I am hoping for a sequel. I am sure it will be just as good as the first, if not better.

A fun book

I enjoyed this book and I believe that kids will find it equally enjoyable. The author successfully blends fantasy characters into everyday modern life. The author is very good at telling the story and making the characters come alive without being overly verbose, a hard thing for most authors to master. He does a good job of developing the characters and includes the little day to day details that, to me, make a story more realistic and believable. The book emphasizes friendship, trust, honesty, and just being yourself. All of which are good lessons for todays youth, as is the emphasis on reading and the arts. This emphasis is not pushy (i.e. - a kid turn-off) and is part of the character development. I think most kids will see a little bit of themselves in the characters and will enjoy the book even more for it.
